I appeal once again to the entire medical fraternity to be sensitive to the fact
that documentation of what all you do, in the correct content and format is important.
I am convinced that all our doctors, Nurses and paramedics have legal responsibility
to provide timely medical service and document the care given. In the eyes of law, all
undocumented effort towards patient care is as good as not done. Computerization is
an easy tool for you to record all your efforts. We need to use computer in all spheres
of data management.
I take this opportunity to thank to all the staff colleague and well wishers for
their. The sports and cultural club of Swami Dayanand Hospital has been doing
remarkable social engineering exercise. Year after year they have been organizing
annual sports and social events. They are active in ensuring the staffs, who retire from
service, are given memorable send off. My thanks are due to them.
The Team work of hospital staff, constructive criticism from health care
seekers, encouragement and the support of the public representatives will help Swami
Dayanand Hospital to flourish and render good care.
As MS of the hospital, I shall continue to the very best to maximize my
contribution in “ Life Care Management System.”

ORTHOPEDICS
Department of orthopedics is one of the busiest in the hospital. At present there are three senior medical
officers in the department. Amongst them two have post graduate degrees in Orthopedics. There are 2
specialist on contract basis, there are five senior and two junior residents in the department. At present
there are five sanctioned posts of plaster assistant and one post of ortho technician. But there are only
two plaster assistants working against these posts. The department possesses an operating arthroscopy
set complete with monitors; shaving systems etc. we have fully equipped operation theatres with a
pneumatically powered drill and saw system, an image intensifier and other orthopedic instruments.
With this infrastructure, all kinds of modern orthopedic operations are being conducted here. In the
past one year, the orthopedic department rendered invaluable services to the multitude of attending
patients. In addition to the routine and common orthopedic operations we have done all kinds of
surgeries including arthroscopic surgeries for both knee and shoulder, total joint replacements of hips and
knees, spinal surgeries for prolapsed intervertebral discs, fixation and fusion of the spine and other
surgeries as well.
In the year 2014 we have performed more than 350 major and 750 minor surgeries which included
cases done in the minor OT in OPD and closed reduction of fractures in the orthopedic OPD. In addition to
this we have administered about 1000 intraarticular hydrocortisone injections, applied more than 12000
plasters and removed about 11000 plasters in 2014.
In addition to the routine cases all emergency cases are handled too. Round the clock emergency
services in ortho are being provided. About 3000 plasters have been applied in the casualty department in
the past year. Many emergency cases which had to be referred to other hospitals earlier due to the lack of
emergency facilities are being handled now. Many emergency procedures which include open reduction
and internal fixation of fractures and drainage of bone and joint abscess have been done in the past year.
The Ortho OPD is one of the heaviest amongst all with approximately 300 patients being catered to
daily. Even on Wednesdays, on which operations are performed, OPD is being run. Minor cases are
performed on OPD basis in the minor OT in the OPD. Also many closed reductions under anesthesia are
performed in OPD itself. Regular CTEV clinic run on every Friday in the OPD, whereby about 700 CTEV
plasters have been applied.
Physiotherapy which is an integral part of this department has been doing a commendable job.
Excellent services are being provided to the needy and they are being rehabilitated to resume their
occupation at earliest. Physiotherapy services are being provided to indoor and outdoor patients from all
departments including orthopedics, medicine, pediatrics, gynecology and obstetrics and ICU as well. In the
year 2014 the physiotherapy has been catered to more than 38000 patients in indoor and outdoor basis.
At present there is only one regular physiotherapist, two on contract basis and one physiotherapist on
deputation thrice weekly and with the increasing number of patients it is becoming difficult to manage the
physiotherapy department. Increasing of physiotherapist posts is of utmost importance at present.

Thalassemia Screening
Nodal Incharge Dr. Shamoli Kundu for EDMC
Thalaseemia screening was introduced 4-5 years back when it was being done mainly by
nestroft reagent but since it was not cost effective and its shelf life was also less, gradually it is
being replaced by CBC method. Hence autoanalyzers were purchased and lab technicians were
trained in this method. Following are the centers under EDMC where the screening was being
done by nestroft method, because of the unavailability of the reagent these centers are
diverting their patients to nearby major hospitals and centers where autoanalyzer is available
and the screening done by CBC method.

Anemia eradication programme under taken by the deptt. Of OBGYNE
All the ANC who are mild to moderately anemic receive I/v iron sucrose as total calculated dose.
This is done daily on OPD basis so that patients who come for antenatal check up also receive
the injection as day care procedure. By this intervention we are able to over come the micro
cytic type of iron deficiency anemia which was largely due to non compliance of oral therapy.
In-house activities
Auditing is the back bone of our department which helps us to formulate policies & protocols
regarding patients care. Each neonatal and maternal death is critically evaluated and analysed.
We learn from each case deduced.
CME on various current topics done during the current year.
Achievements for the year 2014
1. Department shifted to new MCH block with dedicate Gynae casuality
2. 100% high risk obstetric management in collaboration with ICU team
3. Significant decrease in neonatal mortality in collaboration with the peads deptt.
4. Increase in post partum IUCD numbers
5. Increase in JSY beneficiaries
6. 80% MCTS enrollments.
