Annual Report 2020 | 2
Dear Friends,
Within these pages, you’ll learn that the Foundation for Madison’s Public Schools had its best year ever. Over the course of 2020, we secured $4,032,048 compared to $2,686,885 for 2019. Since inception, the Foundation has now secured roughly $27,322,000!
The real story, however, is YOU. During a most challenging year, when you were likely dealing with your own stresses and concerns, you stepped up on multiple levels to demonstrate your commitment to the Madison Metropolitan School District.
Our tagline is Schools Make Madison. Conversely, Madison makes our schools. Here are just some of the ways in which you made both statements a reality:
• You contributed gifts, often more than once, to our funds dedicated to the COVID crisis response.• You sponsored our 2020 Circle of Friends, even though we had to cancel our annual celebration.• You volunteered time, helping us create over 4,000 supply kits designed to set up students for success in virtual learning.• You innovated as Adopt-a-School partners, delivering new solutions to our schools at a time when our buildings were closed.• You served as Principal Partners via Zoom during our virtual 18th Annual A Principal Experience. • You voted on November 3rd to pass the historic $350M Future Ready referenda package, a resounding success driven by the
Foundation-led Vote Yes 2 Invest campaign.
Along the way, you deepened our relationships with existing friends and partners, and laid the groundwork for new and emerging friendships. Best of all, the Foundation is working with the community and MMSD even more closely than ever. We look forward to our continued collaboration as we recover from the COVID crisis in the weeks and months to come. We can’t think of a better way to celebrate our 20th anniversary.
With appreciation for your support and best wishes for your health,

2020 Advocacy Priority: Vote Yes 2 InvestThe Foundation for Madison’s Public Schools was proud to champion the Vote Yes 2 Invest campaign. Our effort was integral in the passing of a historic operating and facilities referenda on November 3, 2020, delivering $350 million in resources to the Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD). The $33M operating referenda will help fund critical equity projects for the district such as a pilot program for a full day 4K and a revamped early literacy initiative. The $317M referenda will give each comprehensive high school building an overhaul creating modern and equitable learning environments.
This is only the beginning for what is now the Foundation’s advocacy arm, Schools Make Madison Advocates. We are committed to solidifying our role as one of the leading voices for Madison’s public schools. Our advocacy work is yet another example of how the Foundation offers our community members access points to support Madison’s public schools.
To everyone who contributed financially or served as one of our nearly 200 campaign volunteers, thank you, we couldn’t have done this without you. A special shout out to our campaign co-chairs and steering committee members.

Teacher Supply Pilot Program Quickly Expands to Serve Entire District
2020 was indeed the “year of the pivot” for the Foundation for Madison’s Public Schools’ new teacher supply program. In January, the Foundation launched the pilot program to early success, led by Mary Reinders of Reinders Research. After months of planning, the program successfully delivered essential classroom supplies to 100 teachers at three schools, serving 3,000 students.
Recognizing teachers know best what is needed most in their classrooms, the program aims to put purchasing power in their hands, alleviating personal spending, and working to ensure every student has the classroom tools and supplies needed for successful and equitable learning. This unique model came from working in tandem with people who have the first-hand knowledge about the needs: teachers, principals, administrators, and retired teacher volunteers.
EZ Office Products of Madison partnered with the Foundation, and was instrumental in making this new service model a reality. They availed their online shopping portal to the district, creating easy, just-in-time ordering of supplies in tandem with delivery to schools, often within 24 hours.
In March, the pandemic forced an abrupt end to the pilot and a pivot was made. MMSD asked the Foundation to provide school supplies to high-need students for a virtual 2020–21 school year. Through a tremendous outpouring of community support, the Foundation secured financial gifts, community partnerships, volunteer hours, and the critical assistance of the Wisconsin State Journal in helping to publicize the project.
That effort raised $220,000 which allowed the Foundation to hold a massive school kit assembly project in September, generously hosted by the Alliant Energy Center. The event resulted in 4,000 kits assembled over two days by well over 100 volunteers and several invaluable community partners.
Understanding that school supplies are consumable and need replenishing, all 50 MMSD schools and four programs received a budget to purchase from the program’s online store. Between August and December the Foundation has met an estimated 68% of student needs through the teacher supply program.
In addition, the Foundation has continued to fill gaps such as headphones and whiteboards for virtual learners, and student wellness kits with social-emotional learning (SEL) aids such as stress balls, journals, and foam rollers. We have continued distribution of in-kind donations valued at $9,200.
We are optimistic for the teacher supply program’s ability to be a steady access point for classroom tools and supplies throughout the school year. This past year we have united donors, non-profits and corporations toward a common effort and you have demonstrated how the power of community can change academic outcomes.
MMSD teachers spend an estimated $1.4 million annually to meet student supply gaps
(2,760 district teachers averaging $500 out-of-pocket)
Fall 2020 School Supply Drive
A special thank you to the following major contributing partners, donors, and collaborating partners. The outpouring of
support and generosity made the fall 2020 school supply drive a huge success.
Every year we have kids coming into school without any supplies at all… a lot of parents just can’t afford them.

Peg Keeler, Retiring Principal of Leopold Elementary Reflects On Her Community Partnerships
Peg Keeler’s 33-year career with the Madison Metropolitan School District is drawing to a close at the end of the 2020–21 school year. She spent time with Mary Bartzen, Community Partnerships Director, reflecting upon the array of Foundation programs that positively impacted the schools, staff, students, and families with whom she worked.
Community Schools
Leopold is one of the District’s four Community Schools which, according to Peg, enables Leopold to serve as a resource hub in the community, helping to create a sense of belonging for all.
Adopt-a-School
Peg’s introduction to the Adopt-a-School program came while she was serving as the principal of Van Hise Elementary, which had a team of volunteer tutors from Midvale Community Lutheran Church. In 2018, when Peg began working with Leopold’s five Adopt-a-School partners, she really felt something special. She shared, “Having Adopt-a-School partners makes us feel as though we are not alone…we are connecting to the bigger community picture and are not operating in a vacuum.” Peg further reflected that “The Leopold partners are our true friends. We would not be the school we are today if not for our Adopt-a-School partnerships.”
School Endowments
Through the Foundation, each of Madison’s 50 schools has a School Endowment, generating investment income that our schools use to fund creative and innovative programs and projects. Peg remarked that “Having this source of funding has enabled us to elevate and lift up all sorts of programs and projects at our schools, from providing books written in Spanish for our students to have at home, to learning mindfulness practices, to providing flexible seating.”
A Principal Experience
Over the course of her tenure as a principal at both Van Hise and Leopold, Peg appreciated A Principal Experience and welcoming Principal Partners into her school buildings, providing them with the opportunity to understand the complexities and wonders that occur in public schools.
Peg also recognized that the Leopold community benefited significantly from the transformative power of a Legacy Gift.

Adopt-a-School partners did an extraordinary job meeting the needs of our scholars and their families, teachers, and staff during 2020, investing $812,632 in human, material, and financial resources in their school communities.
In March 2020, Adopt-a-School (AaS) partners quickly moved from volunteering in our school buildings to focusing on providing COVID-19 relief in the neighborhoods in which our schools are located. A resounding theme in 2020 from both partners and school leaders was grace, compassion, and gratitude as everyone joined together to focus on the basic needs of scholars and their families.
Stephens Elementary AaS partner Covenant Presbyterian Church exemplifies the shifts partners made during the COVID pandemic. According to Associate Pastor Jeffrey Fox-Kline, “We sent money to buy groceries, gas, and pay for utilities for families affected by the pandemic. Usually we send money to help the school make program improvements, but we worked well together to pivot towards more direct services, which shows the importance of the role schools play in their students’ lives.” Reverend Fox-Kline added “In the absence of volunteering, we have leaned into providing direct assistance to students at the school’s direction. Our financial giving has increased by a significant factor.”
Stephens Principal Sarah Galanter-Guziewski shared that “Covenant Presbyterian really helped us out in a time of need and we are indebted to them for their ability to help our families directly. They have been great communicators and are always willing to support our families. We feel so lucky to be working with Covenant Presbyterian through the Foundation’s Adopt-a-School program.”
Of the Adopt-a-School partners responding to the 2020 survey, 88% plan to continue their partnership with their school. 80% of schools responding reported that their Adopt-a-School partners understand and work to support the strategic priorities as spelled out in their School Improvement Plan. This is positive news as we prepare for the 2021/2022 school year.

Adopt-a-School Partnerships Blossom in New Ways
As Principal Partner Jared Klingeisen shared, “I definitely enjoyed it, and I’m very glad I participated. I have a major appreciation for all of the great work you all are doing. It was incredible to hear from the students, and I could not have been more impressed by them.”
Save the date for A Principal Experience 2021 on Tuesday, October 26. Contact Mary Bartzen at [email protected] to learn more and express interest. We’re optimistic that our 18th year will return to an in-person experience.

The Madison Public Schools Friends & Alumni Network launched during graduation season 2020 and provides a free way for alumni and community supporters to stay connected and engaged in activities that strengthen our schools and each other.
From the start, input from alumni was of utmost importance as we worked to build a network that resonated with our community. In May, a survey was fielded to 24,000 individuals to help us better understand the information, services, and opportunities that alumni would like to receive from the network. The results enabled us to roll out a community-driven and user-informed alumni network.
Now featuring a dedicated website, a directory with 42,000+ alumni records, a collection of more than 25 alumni stories, volunteer opportunities, news updates, special events, and more, the network is working hard to connect alumni and unlock key resources for the district and community: intellectual, academic, career, collegiate, networking, and philanthropic.
In an effort to honor the incredibly hard work and accomplishments of the Class of 2020, the Foundation for Madison’s Public Schools funded 43 scholarships totaling $44,129, and the network provided $5,000 across the six high schools to support graduation activities. The district, as well as the individual schools, organized sign distributions, social media tributes, special yearbook efforts, and more to lift the spirits of seniors and give them the celebration each and every one deserved.

I was blessed with six children, with Nicole being the third girl. After Nicole died in a tragic car accident in 2002 at the age of 21, I came to the realization that there is physicality to the pain in one’s heart. I physically felt my heart breaking. I spent years contemplating how I could honor her legacy of caring and all the good she brought into the world during her short time here. That answer came when the board of directors of the company I worked for, Group Health Cooperative of South Central Wisconsin, approached the Foundation for Madison’s Public Schools to establish a permanent endowment in Nicole’s memory in honor of my 35th anniversary with GHC. Through the board’s generous contributions and additional gifts from many co-workers, friends, and associates, the “Nicole Zanoni Health Endowment Fund” was established.
The fund’s purpose is to support Madison Public School student’s oral health and medical care. This was a perfect way to honor Nicole who always had a big heart for wanting to help others. Because the Foundation for Madison’s Public Schools is helping to preserve Nicole’s legacy, I decided to include them in my estate plans. This bequest is one way that my love for Nicole will endure in perpetuity, and it brings me great joy to think of the many children who will be more healthy through her Health Endowment Fund. I’m expecting “big hugs” when we meet again!

Schools Make Madison Champions Invest in All Our Futures
When Martha Vukelich-Austin was asked to help with a Foundation for Madison’s Public Schools’ fundraising event in 2004, she was happy to accept. The Foundation’s mission was in alignment with what she and her husband, George Austin, believed—that every child is entitled to a high-quality public education that provides potential for their future. She went on to serve on the Board of Directors and then had the honor to lead the Foundation from 2006 to 2011. Martha reflected that “Working to raise funds and build community support and connections to enrich the lives of students and their families, teachers, and staff, was a privilege.”
Martha and George’s grandchildren represent the third generation in their family to attend Madison’s public schools. There are graduates from three of Madison’s high schools among their extended family.
“We have seen firsthand the opportunities and challenges the Madison Metropolitan School District is facing. We have witnessed the difference that financial and human resources can make for a child, a teacher, and a school.”
“What can be more important to a child’s future than an excellent education? Our community’s children are all our children. Their success is an investment in all our futures. We are proud to invest in them, and encourage others to do the same.”

170+ Funds Support Innovative Projects and Technology Across All 50 Schools
The Foundation is proud to offer fiscal agency services for donors looking to establish a fund in support of Madison’s public schools. Groups such as a PTO or booster club, or even a group of individuals can create a fund for a special program or project that benefits students. The Foundation serves as the manager of the funds by acknowledging donors, ensuring proper accounting for gifts, distributing available monies, and assisting with fund promotion.
In 2020, the Foundation created three new funds, two of which directed relief and resources to scholars, staff and families needingadditional assistance as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
MMSD Community Resource Fund
MSCR Community Resource Fund
Donations to this fund have been used to mail instructional materials to K-8 students, support equitable Wi-Fi access across the district, and to purchase school supplies for scholars engaged in virtual learning. Comprehensive supply kits were distributed in fall 2020 and ongoing needs continue to be met.
Donations to this fund support the mission, programs and servicesof MSCR with priority given to addressing needs related to the COVID-19 pandemic. This included individual supply kits for MSCR Cares childcare participants, personal protective equipment, supplies and equipment facilitating remote work, and the preparation and training for future programs.
Metro Schools Fund*
The Metro Schools Fund was established to support the projects and activities of Metro Middle and High Schools. Metro Schools are committed to providing high quality, student-centered programming for youth involved in the juvenile and adult justice systems. The focus is to support the ongoing academic, emotional, and social strengths of students.

Cherokee Heights Middle School believed everyone needed to learn the origins of racist ideologies if their equity vision of “building a just and antiracist school where we all feel safe, seen, heard, and connected,” is to truly come alive.
They chose “Stamped: Racism, Antiracism, and You” for an all-school read. A “Stamped” team of staffmembers planned lessons which were implementedin virtual learning advisory classes. The school’s endowment fund through the Foundation was used to purchase 680 copies of the book for students, staff and community partners.
“One thing I learned was how much propaganda and lying-to-preserve-
legacy-on-both-sides was going on.”7th grade student
“Almost everything has a racial aspect or is rooted in systemic racism.”
8th grade student
“Racism can come in different ways, no matter what way it comes at you or affects your life you got to pick yourself together to never lose hope.”
6th grade student
“Keep reading and trying.”8th grade student
“Addressing any racist thoughts with myself, speaking up and standing up.”
7th grade student
“Well, I’m Mexican so I would know about getting racist comments. I don’t want that to happen to others who aren’t familiar with new places.”

Elizabeth Huebel, Board Chair Foundation for Madison’s Public Schools
I’ve been involved with the Foundation for over 18 years and didn’t think I could be any more passionate about my support until the last year. With all of the changes and demands of the COVID environment, I’ve been amazed at the dedication, hard work and ingenuity of our district staff in working to meet the needs of a whole new landscape in the effort to provide a quality education to our students. I’m proud that the Foundation is in the position to help the district with many of the needed efforts to support these students and the educators who teach them.
Dr. Carlton Jenkins, Superintendent Madison Metropolitan School District
MMSD has been inspired by the efforts of our community
partners as we have worked together to provide critical
support to our families. The financial support given through
the Foundation’s MMSD and MSCR Community Resource
funds was critical for getting necessary learning tools into our
students’ homes and offering reliable child care, an essential
family support. Every basic need we are able to meet, and every
obstacle we can remove, will make it easier for our students to
accelerate their learning. The Foundation, with all of your support,
continues to help the district address needs every single day.
I appreciate everything you are doing to support us, and we will
continue to work together in partnership and be #MMSD Strong.
