A Year of Grace

Without question, it took a village to get CKRH through this difficult year. Staff workedlong hours during the spring shutdown to make sure that both the horses and facilitywere sufficiently cared for when no volunteers were allowed on site. The Board ofDirectors discussed and approved COVID-19 protocol recommendations from the staffwhich would ensure everyone’s safety as CKRH began to adapt to this new norm. Ourlong-time donors (and many new ones) opened their wallets continuously andgenerously throughout the year to make sure the lights stayed on and the vet got paid.Participants and volunteers were patient as new safety measures were implemented. And the horses....well, the horses continued to graze in the paddocks and give an extranuzzle when it was needed most.

As we look toward a post-pandemic future in 2021, we want to take this opportunity tothank you for walking with us. We appreciated your unwavering support and celebratewith you as we all look for better times ahead.

Pat KlineExecutive Director

When we think of 2020, most of uswill remember a year of hardship. But for CKRH, it has also been a timeof enormous goodwill. At every level, people rose to the occasion...and, inturn, how glad we were that CKRHwas able to provide a sense of calmand security during such uncertaintimes. “It feels good to do something normal” or “I really missed this place” werefrequent comments as participants, families and volunteers returned to the barn inmid-June.

DEAR FRIENDS,

CKRH provides services that improve thequality of life and health for individuals withspecial physical, cognitive, emotional andsocial needs through therapeutic activitieswith the horse. These activities arefacilitated by our staff of highly skilledCertified Therapeutic Riding Instructors(CTRIs). CKRH prides ourselves in offeringprogramming across the lifespan and wefind that people from all backgroundsbenefit from interaction with our equinepartners.

In 2020, our programming looked a littledifferent than traditional years. However, wewere able to successfully engage in severalways that have kept both our horses and staffin tip-top shape. The cornerstone of

We maintained the equine educationcomponent of our Fayette County PublicSchool program, the STABLES, by using aunique combination of real time virtualinstruction and recorded content. Typically, this program serves students in grades 8-12through traditional classroom learning andhands-on equine interaction.

Our military programming maintained astrong presence this year through a

partnership with the Kentucky National Guard. Through this collaboration we were able toprovide equine components for resiliency workshops. We also partnered with a local veteran’sorganization to provide specialized activities which complemented their existingprogramming.

Our formal therapy program was put on hold for a portion of the year due to COVID-19 limitations, however we have been able to return with a small, but growing number of clients who receive Occupational Therapy using hippotherapy as a treatment modality on site.

Six weeks into the spring lockdown, CKRH beganhosting Friday Drive-Thrus for participants andvolunteers who were missing their weekly barn visits.More than 80 cars streamed through one of them!

Our Minis on the Move brought much-neededmental health services to organizations

throughout the community, ranging from youthprograms to senior living facilities.

2020 Programming

By mid-June, in-person services had resumed and safety protocols had becomesecond nature!

Before resuming in-personlessons, some participantsopted to have weekly, virtual lessons! Participantslearned horsemanshipbasics like equine bodyparts, parts of the saddle, and how to identify theirhorse's mood.

Special Events

Special events looked a little different this year! The Paul Frazer Horse Show was cancelled, the annual gala went virtual, and the Tack Sale restricted barn access to just 75 people at a time. That said, we had a strong turnout for each event- especially for the newly established Walk On for Hope 5K run/walk!

During a year when personal interaction was discouraged, CKRH and its partnersfound creative ways to exchange knowledge and services through socially-distantgathering or virtual discussions.

Who We Serve: CKRH service eligibility is based upon the presence of a physical, behavioral, cognitive, psychosocial or learning related diagnosis. While a diagnosis gets an individual in the door, our programming success is based upon maximizing that participant's abilities. Our instructional stafffocuses on the many ways in which adaptation, modification and grading can occur to facilitate successwith tasks presented to our participants. Just a few of the many elements our instructors address aremobility, strength, behavior, cognition, and social engagement.

Central Kentucky Riding for Hope (CKRH) is a Premier Accredited Center of the ProfessionalAssociation of Therapeutic Horsemanship, Int’l (PATH.)

We began in 1981 as a grass-roots collaboration between Dr. Peter Bosomworth, who at the timeserved as Chancellor of the University of Kentucky Medical Center, and a small group of localhorse enthusiasts. The team initially borrowed horses to assist four participants. The originalobjective was to offer an alternative to traditional machine-based/tabletop therapies by using thethree-dimensional movement of the horse, which is more comparable to a human’s naturalstride.

The pilot program proved so successful that we were given use of a converted tobacco barn at the newly established Kentucky Horse Park. Continuing to grow as a seasonal program running May-October, we became initially accredited by PATH in 1987, and achieved Premier Accredited Center status in 1998.

During this time, programming developed rapidly, and interest in our therapeutic horsemanshipactivities grew beyond what a seasonal program could maintain. The CKRH Board of Directorssaw the need to provide year-round services and undertook a $4 million capital campaign in2005. Our new indoor facility was completed in 2011, enabling us to provide programming

Our History

without limitations from weather ortime of day.

Our facility is now larger, and our programming is more diverse, but one thing remains the same: We will always have the “tobacco barn” atmosphere by welcoming you by name and with a warm smile.
