annual report 2018
CAPE engages students, inspires teachers, and demonstrates impact
by bringing visual and performing arts into classrooms in low
income, high needs public schools across Chicago.

creativity through research-based, arts-driven education.
our mission
our organizationCAPE’s service to the community includes:
• In-school and after-school programs for K-12 students and families
• Professional development for educators and teaching artists
• Long-term research on the impacts of art on students and teachers
• Public art exhibitions to showcase creative learning and artistic research

The past year was full of surprising moments, challenging questions,
eye-opening discoveries, and inspiring creations for the students,
families, educators, and artists in CAPE’s many programs.
Last year we celebrated the culmination of ATLAS, our three-year
professional development program, which helped CPS fine arts teachers
find new ways to integrate digital technology into their classrooms.
These teachers made impressive strides in their own learning and
inspired new depths of understanding and creativity in their students.
We welcomed a record number of guests to exhibitions featuring work
by our students, who we call Artist/Researchers. When young people are
able to see their own art showcased in public spaces, they better
understand how their ideas, passions, and creativity can play a
role in the larger community.
We’re pleased to share more success stories with you here and we
look forward to everything the 2018-2019 year has in store,
including new programs, exhibitions, and research findings!

project spotlight:arte+correr // art+running
Arte+Correr, or Art+Running, was one of several classes in CAPE’s
after-school program at Telpochcalli Elementary. Teacher Maria Nava-
Ortiz, teaching artist Jessica Mueller, and their students were guided by
the inquiry question:
How can we better understand our community
and ourselves through art and running?
As the progam got underway, the class fell into a rhythm. They spent
the first half of each session exploring the Little Village community on
foot, with stops to observe and document the sights, sounds, and
smells around them. The second half of each session was spent back in
the classroom, where students reflected on their run and experimented
with a variety of visual art techniques to process and represent newly
acquired knowledge.
The group ran, journaled, and created through rain, snow, and heat. In
the process, they spoke with shopkeepers, barbers, firefighters, valets,
and passersby along their route and created screen prints, maps, and a
zine that collected the moments that excited, surprised, and inspired
them as they developed a deeper awareness of and connection to their
Little Village community.

project spotlight:tattoos as art and cultureIn the 2017-2018 school year, North-Grand High School was proud to offer, for the first time, both Latino Literature and African American Literature courses, in an effort to provide a curriculum that better reflected their student population. Teacher Lisa Welsh hoped to give her students a way to explore issues of identity and race through literature, informational text, video, and art, and teaching artist Jose Luis Benavides suggested the study of identity via tattoos. While it was a provocative medium, Ms. Welsh thought tattoos would be an engaging way for her students to explore these issues and gain a greater understanding of themselves within the context of culture, race, gender, and nationality.
The students were eager to study tattoos within art, history, and culture, and to create symbols of their own personal legacies and their connections to the text, their cultures, and themselves. The students experimented with different types of markmaking and image manipulation, and ultimately designed a wide variety of tattoos that represented each student and linked them back to the Latin American and African American literature they were studying.
Much of this work is featured at the Chicago Cultural Center through January 6, 2019, alongside other CAPE artwork from North-Grand High School.
