Norfolk Botanical Garden
from the president
“An oasis of calm in an otherwise increasingly loud and chaotic world.”
“The Central Park of Norfolk/Virginia Beach.”
“My happy place!”
These are all phrases I’ve heard over the past year to describe this place —one of the most biologically diverse areas in
our region. Did you know that over 196 Families, 1,039 Genera and 8,300 Taxa of plants live here? Altogether 255,426
individual plants plus nearly 2,000 plant masses call Norfolk Botanical Garden home.
This Annual Report for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2018, celebrates the work of volunteers, members, donors and
staff in stewarding this home for a diverse world of plants, insects, birds and mammals visited by over 375,000 people
last year.
This past year saw the notable return of LanternAsia and the expansion, yet again, of our Million Bulb Walk. Both events
were blockbusters, adding over 2,000 new families to our membership. Our revenues continue to be robust and at
nearly $6.9 million, I’m happy to say, are our largest in history. In fact our gross revenue has grown a whopping 57% in
only five years. All the result of incredible work by our Board, staff and many, many volunteers. Thank you!
The Board has committed themselves to utilizing these funds to improve our campus, address aging infrastructure and
implement our Master Plan, all while working with staff to achieve an aggressive five-year Strategic Plan for 2014-2018
that will culminate this year.
Our Strategic Plan:
• Establish the Garden as a leader in environmental stewardship.
• Deepen the Garden’s engagement with—and impact in—the community.
• Provide a dynamic, high quality and welcoming experience.
• Strengthen communications and marketing to build excitement about the Garden.
• Ensure long-term financial sustainability.
• Strengthen organizational leadership and capacity.
The results of this ambitious plan are in the book you’re holding. I’m so proud of the work our team has done in
successfully completing the Board’s mandate and look forward to the work ahead on our next plan as we continue to
utilize our leadership to address the environmental crisis. Thank you for joining us in our work this past year.

Weddings & Corporate EventsWith so many private and public events taking place
throughout the year, Norfolk Botanical Garden has
become one of the most popular destinations and sought-
after venues in Coastal Virginia. The Garden continues to
be the premier wedding and event venue in the region,
bringing in over $350,000 in revenue from 102 weddings,
corporate events and private rentals. The Garden was
also the backdrop for more than 250 private portrait
photography sessions last year and welcomed over
12,000 wedding and event guests during the 2017-2018
fiscal year.
celebr$350,000+in revenue from weddings
and other events
Signature EventsFiscal year 2017-2018 was an exceptional year for the
Garden. LanternAsia brought in more than 100,000 visitors
and nearly $1 million in revenue and introduced visitors to
our beautiful Garden with approx. 2,000 visitors joining our
member family. The Honeybee and Butterfly festivals both
had record attendance at over 3,300 each. With 21 nights
to walk, Million Bulb Walk attracted 49,984 visitors—an 86%
increase over 2016! Dominion Energy Garden of Lights drive-
through has been a family favorite for more than 20 years
and last year was no exception, topping the previous year’s
revenue. Four high school regattas brought in over 3,200
visitors. Suds & Buds was a sold out event again this past
May, bringing record attendance and donations for NBG and
our partners, Norfolk Rotary Club and Young Audiences of
Virginia.

Visitor Services & Membership
Whether it’s the smiling face greeting you at the toll booth,
the person that offers suggestions on things to do or see,
or the guide that takes you on a narrated journey around
the Garden, the goal of the Member and Guest Services
staff is to offer our visitors an experience that keeps them
coming back. Of the thousands of families that visited
the Garden this past year, 24% converted to members. In
addition, the renewal rate for our existing members has
reached 70%, growing the number of member families to
over 12,400.
Thank YouWe could not have had this success without you! You
have made a remarkable difference in helping the Garden
flourish. Donors like you help us connect with local
communities, provide educational programs for children
& adults, and inspire environmental stewardship. We
couldn’t do it without your support.

conservation &sustainability
Environmental StewardshipWe’re making great strides with our environmental
initiatives. The Norfolk Environmental Commission
recognized our efforts to “reduce, reuse, and recycle” with
a 2017 Business Award of Excellence. Award recipients
were selected based on their positive environmental
impact, leadership in addressing environmental problems
and long-term commitment to environmental sustainability.
Plastic pollution is on everyone’s radar, including ours.
This summer, we phased out the sale of bottled water in
our gift shop. The café replaced plastic straws with paper
ones saving nearly 20,000 plastic straws a year from the
waste stream. We’ve asked all our vendors to follow our
lead.
HorticultureWhether it is reducing chemicals by using organic pest
management or by adding plants that benefit pollinators,
wildlife, or the overall ecosystem, the environment is
always on our mind when planting. We have banned the
use of neonicotinoids due to the harmful impact its use
has on beneficial insects like bees. Another way that we
promote the health of our pollinators is to incorporate as
many native plants into our landscape as possible. We
added new plants to the Boat Basin where we combined
natives and exotics, all of which should be able to
withstand the occasionally wet soils next to the canal—
and appeal to our guests. In the Butterfly Garden the
maze renovations were completed in late spring, and now
guests of all ages can get lost among the switch grass
and lantanas (pollinators love lantana). New plantings
were added to the Japanese Garden, especially around
the spectacular new gate which was built from recycled

wood from the Garden. Several other gardens received
upgrades to their existing planting schemes including the
Rose Garden, Baker Overlook, the Butterfly Gazebo, the
Healing Garden, and others. After many years, we made
a return to the Home and Garden Show with an Asian
exhibit to promote LanternAsia.
This past spring, we had our most successful fundraising
plant sale yet, featuring plants from both Asia and
North America.
Environmentally FriendlyOur Facilities team is always looking for new ways to save
on energy. This past year we installed a much needed-
energy efficient HVAC system during the renovation of
the Administration Building. Admin also has smart lighting
technology throughout – saving on energy costs. A new
roof was also installed covering Baker Hall, Education and
Rose Garden Hall. With the new roof came six inches of
insulation. It’s the highest R value environmentally friendly
insulation that is Class A-Fire and Energy Star rated. This
contributes significantly by reducing energy consumption
during the winter and summer seasons. The new roof is a
polymer sheet and white was chosen as the color which
will also contribute to energy conservation. In an attempt
to reduce storm water runoff, a permeable surface was
used for the road behind Rose Garden Hall and the
Education building which will allow storm water to infiltrate
into the soil below.
5Annual Report 2017/2018
EducationWe offer over 250 programs with nearly 3,000 class
participants enjoying a variety of educational programs
taught by our Horticulture staff and instructors from the
local community. Classes include gardening workshops,
kayaking, art classes, floral designs, yoga and more!
The Education department is continuing to expand our
partnerships with local organizations, such as botany
programs with the US Army Corps of Engineers and
Tomato Tastings with Southern Exposure Seed Exchange.
If you are interested in digging further and expanding
your knowledge, become a volunteer. Our volunteers
do an amazing job helping us educate the public as
they work alongside NBG staff. Our 1,000+ volunteers
contributed approximately 14,000 hours last year which
equates to a value of about $354,350.88 according

Youth Programs STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) is an
educational focus for many school systems today. The
Garden plays a key role in highlighting the importance of
natural sciences in STEM education. The WOW Children’s
Garden offers a place for school children and families to
learn first-hand about botany, ecology and horticulture. As
a partner for the Virginia Air & Space Museum’s STEM 360
6 Norfolk Botanical Garden
9,700+students, teachers & chaperones exposed to NBG through youth tours
2,000+students and families reached through educational outreach
programsprogram, NBG hosted 600 5th grade students for a tour
of Plant Safari in WOW and the flower dissection lab. This
past school year, more than 9,700 school children, teachers
and chaperones, daycare children and youth activity
groups visited the Garden and explored with our Youth
Educators. These tours aligned with the Virginia Standards
of Learning and gave children the opportunity for a hands-on
experience.
OutreachOur outreach program is thriving. Education and horticulture
staff presented 46 educational programs and tours to a
variety of garden clubs, professional organizations and
special interest groups. That’s nearly double from last year.
We continue to have a strong presence at local fairs and
expos. This past year, NBG staff interacted with more than
2,000 guests through school outreach programs, presenting
to a variety of different organizations, and met with children
and families at the International Children’s Festival. We
attended over 25 events throughout the Hampton Roads
area. Our Facilities team was excited to host our first fellow
from Mission Continues this past spring. Mission Continues
is a non-profit program that helps veterans find a career path
after service. Our partnerships with Teens with a Purpose,
Booker T. Washington High School and Denbigh Early
Childhood Center continue to grow. We look forward to
more outreaches.

Brian O’Neil became our first Director of Living
Landscapes, a co-appointment between the Garden and
Virginia Wesleyan University (VWU). After 10 years as the
Director of Horticulture, Brian’s new role allows him to
remain the chief landscape designer and advisor to the
Horticulture Department while additionally overseeing
the maintenance of a 2.5-acre native plant garden
surrounding the new Greer Environmental Sciences
Center at VWU. In addition to managing the native plant
gardens surrounding the Greer, Living Landscapes
role has expanded within the past year to help combat
exotic invasive plants on their campus. Several hundred
new native perennial plantings—including native white
water lilies—have been added in the past year to the
Greer landscape. Educating students, staff, visitors, and
faculty on the role of native plants and environmental
sustainability—especially water and nutrient conservation
has become an especially important and enjoyable part of
Living Landscapes activities on campus.

seasonal maintenance of the Slover Library planters
and periodic maintenance at the Norfolk Welcome Sign
outside the airport entrance.
9Annual Report 2017/2018
The Garden has a true friend in Patricia Peace Rawls.
Over the past few decades (yes, decades!) Trisha has
volunteered as the Gift Shop’s Treasurer, supported
capital campaign efforts, and served on numerous
committees. She was elected to the Garden’s Board of
Directors twice—working tirelessly on its behalf for over
18 years, serving as Treasurer twice and President twice.
She has also served on the Norfolk Botanical Garden
Foundation since 1995 and is its current President.
Trisha has been involved in helping area non-profits
for more than 30 years. The list of organizations that
have benefitted from her efforts is extensive and the
Garden is fortunate to be among them. Over the years
she has championed the Garden’s efforts to become
a world class botanical garden with award-winning
plant collections, expanded programming, increased
annual attendance, and heightened awareness of the
Garden as a valuable community resource. In addition
to supporting the Garden’s capital campaigns, she led
the Garden’s campaign to raise money to restore the 11
Moses Ezekiel Statues in Statuary Vista and create an
endowment fund to cover their ongoing maintenance so
that future generations can see them on display. These
beautiful works of art by a Virginia artist are now restored
and better protected from environmental damage in a
spectacular garden landscape that invites people to linger
and enjoy the combination of art and natural beauty.
A native of Franklin, Virginia, Trisha graduated from Hollins
College with a B.A. in Art History. In 2008, she was a
recipient of the YWCA Women of Distinction Award as
well as the Hometown Hero Award sponsored by Stihl,
Inc. The City of Norfolk honored her in 2013 as the 86th
recipient of the Norfolk First Citizen Award in recognition
of her dedication to giving back to the community. The
Garden is forever grateful to Trisha and all she has
accomplished on our behalf. What a beautiful legacy!

15Annual Report 2017/2018
The Norfolk Botanical Garden Foundation is a separate 501(c)(3) whose sole mission is the support of Norfolk Botanical Garden. The Foundation invests the Garden’s endowment funds and makes an annual distribution from the funds’ earnings to assist the Garden in fulfilling its mission.
The following are current members of the Foundation’s board of directors as of June 30, 2018:
As of June 30, 2018, the Foundation had assets of nearly $16 million and provided a total of $470,000 to the Garden for operating purposes in FY18. Adhering to certain donor restrictions, some of that total went to specific areas or for specific purposes in the Garden such as the Camellia Garden, Children’s Garden, Hydrangea Garden, Meadow and areas in and around Baker Hall and the Education Building. The Foundation would like to thank its donors, past and present, who have had the foresight and generosity to contribute to the Foundation, helping to ensure the viability of Norfolk Botanical Garden for generations to come.
