The Westmoreland Museum of American Art

Annual Report 2017–2018 / 04

2017-2018 at The WestmorelandThe 2017-2018 fiscal year was one of transition for The Westmoreland as The Richard M. Scaife Director/CEO Judith Hansen O’Toole announced her retirement in September and a national search for her replacement was embarked upon by a committee of board members, chaired by Ellen Swank, and also including Museum staff member Barbara Jones, Chief Curator. By the end of the fiscal year, a candidate had been selected, Anne Kraybill, to become only the third director in the Museum’s history.

2017-2018 marked the second full fiscal year in the renovated and expanded building and was a busy one for board and staff alike with the presentation of four featured exhibitions in the Cantilever Gallery all organized in part or fully by The Westmoreland; the launch of the Art Happens public art project; and the hosting of the first annual Greensburg Artswalk with community partners the Westmoreland Cultural Trust and Seton Hill University.

The Museum planned a full year of events and programs, including All About You Free Sundays, Art on Taps, educational tours for school children, art classes for youth and adults and much more.

The following pages provide detail of our featured exhibitions; the art acquisitions, gifts and loans for the year; all those who made the year possible from board, staff and volunteers to members and donors; and our financial statement of activities.

The nationally recognized collections of The Westmoreland bring together over 4,000 objects of fine and decorative American art from the mid-18th century through the present, including a unique focus on the art of Southwestern Pennsylvania. The collections relate directly to the historical and cultural heritage of the region by presenting the fine and decorative arts of Southwestern Pennsylvania within the context of the broader American art scene. Through the collections, visitors learn about art as an expression of history and culture of the region.

Art Exhibitions2017-2018 Cantilever Gallery Featured Exhibitions

The Art of Movement: Alexander Calder, George Rickey, Tim PrenticeJune 10–September 17, 2017This exhibition was inspired by the Museum’s acquisition of the kinetic sculpture Windframe by Tim Prentice in 2015. Commissioned specifically from the artist for the west wing niche, the artist assembled 440 individual stainless steel plates that all move randomly and independently when propelled by the air, activating the building façade with reflections of the surrounding natural landscape, sky, and weather conditions. Prentice calls his work “toys for the wind to play with,” and refers to both Alexander Calder and George Rickey as his “heroes.” Comprised of over 40 sculptures and works on paper, the exhibition built progressively from Calder to Rickey to Prentice. By organizing this exhibition, The Westmoreland hoped to bring a greater understanding of and appreciation for the importance of the kinetic art movement and these extraordinary artists and their work

A Timeless Perfection: Figurative Sculpture in the Classical Spirit-Gifts from the Collection of Dr. Michael L. NielandReception: Saturday, October 7th October 7–December 31, 2017A remarkable new generation of academically trained American sculptors emerged during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. At the height of the Gilded Age, they achieved widespread critical and commercial success for works created on public commission as well as for private patrons. Surprisingly and unfortunately, the flowering of these artists was relatively brief, and amid rapidly changing aesthetics in the twentieth century, the reputations of many of these sculptors dimmed.

This exhibition celebrated the transformational gift from Dr. Michael L. Nieland to the Museum in 2015 of nine late nineteenth and early twentieth century figurative sculptures with an additional forty-eight sculptures to be given in 2018. This outstanding collection gives us an opportunity to rediscover another dimension of modern American art from the late 19th century into the first half of the 20th century. By exploring the lives and aesthetic achievements of these sculptors, the exhibition expanded awareness and deepened the public’s knowledge of this extraordinary era of American sculpture, in addition to bringing overdue recognition to these artists.

A fully illustrated, full-color catalogue accompanied the exhibition in which the author, Bruce Weber, discusses individual works within the context of their creator’s overall interests and pursuits, and highlights these artists’ works which have come to find a new home at The Westmoreland Museum of American Art.

Emigration-Immigration-Migration: Five Photographic PerspectivesJanuary 20–April 22, 2017Emigration-Immigration-Migration was a civic engagement project that used photographic imagery to document the faces and experiences of multiple generations of immigrants and their descendants. Highlighting the work of five Pittsburgh photographers, their photographs serve as a lens through which to consider the broader American immigrant experience, while highlighting the central role that immigration has played in the formation of our identity, in sustaining our economy, and in the enrichment of our cultural diversity. In so doing, this helps create a space for civil, constructive conversation about immigration today.

Five photographers from the Pittsburgh region were featured in the exhibition: Brian Cohen, Lynn Johnson, Annie O’Neill, Scott Goldsmith, and Nate Guidry. Two writers, Reid Frazier and Erika Beras, contributed essays to the catalog that accompanied the exhibition.

The Art of Giving: Selections from the Richard M. Scaife BequestMay 12–August 5, 2018For this exhibition, the Brandywine River Museum of Art and The Westmoreland came together to share their finest works from the Richard M. Scaife Bequest. Following his death in 2014, Mr. Scaife left his collection to The Westmoreland and the Brandywine, allowing each to choose works, with the selection process conducted in a round-robin format. Both museums gained masterworks of American art for their collections. Seeing these paintings together for the first time not only highlighted the selection process but allowed visitors insight into the collecting vision of both museums as well as the range of Mr. Scaife’s collecting tastes.
