One Health has arisen in response to the hardest question in healthcare today

ldquoWhy are we still no closer to achieving world healthrdquo

We have learnt that healthy communities require healthy resilient local community organisations

To be medically effective these projects also need to be ldquoupstreamrdquo interventions that engage the many social determinants of ill health

Our Mission is therefore to amplify the impact of high-potential community-directed health ventures with upstream solutions

This is how we are achieving health for all one project at a time

We passionately believe there can be no health in an unhealthy culture and that

stop-gap measures are always doomed to fall short

Genuine health is founded on addressing broader social issues such as gaps in economic fairness proper nutrition social inclusion and political equality Most healthcare programs are hopelessly ill-equipped to bridge these gaps

In fact so many people are falling through the ever-widening gaps that they have now become dangerous cliffs and it is not enough to simply put an ambulance at the bottom of such cliffs The current approach is clearly not working

Solutions that only focus on symptomatic medical intervention and fail to address these fundamental determinants of health and wellbeing can only ever be a temporary solution

OUR VISION is no less than

lsquoHealth For Allrsquo

What is needed is a new approach that encompasses both aspects of health creation meeting the communityrsquos immediate healthcare needs and finding solutions to the upstream drivers of preventable disease

THE CHALLENGE OF SCALING LOCAL SOLUTIONS

To implement this model on a meaningful scale we need two things

1 Healthy organisations that are resilient and sustainable over the long-term

2 A collaboration between hubs of global experts and the on-the-ground local expertise from the communities themselves

OUR COMMUNITY HEALTH-HUB MODEL One Health therefore incubates the flagship health projects that have arisen from within their communities and are already addressing the upstream drivers of preventable disease To these local grassroots community initiatives we bring our global perspective experience and networks Together we form a semi-centralised hub

A new kind of infrastructure is thus emerging through our approach to deep collaboration Our model centralises the knowledge and networks which it can yet retains the local autonomy that is so crucial for deep impact Itrsquos a simple model but one which has leverage at its heart

By working with these health ventures we create a groundswell of empowered communities developing models of excellence that can be adapted and replicated to achieve real scale and real impact

This is how we close the gaps This is how we achieve health for all

Message From Jimi

Although every year is a big year in the social sector it has been a particularly

big year for One Health Getting rated 2nd out of 1217 NGOs on the Australia-wide innovation index was one of the many highlights This was very affirming as the climate and culture of One Health has always felt to be one that both valued and fostered innovative thinking via our regular ldquobrain hurricanerdquo think tank sessions The rating initiated a range of conversations with passionate leaders within the industry

For me the backdrop to these conversations was that Australia has officially slipped two places on the Global Innovation Index failing to export and commercialise enough ideas to push into the top tier Australia placed 19th on the 2016 index down from 17th in 2015 with Switzerland Sweden and Britain ranking highest on the list I canrsquot help but feel that we are punching well below our weight here which is something that both saddens and excites me

So whilst Give Easyrsquos CEO Jeremy Tobiasrsquo question to me was ldquoHow do we get more organisations to value and prioritise innovationrdquo I told him I believed that the question should be ldquoHow do we create an Australia-wide culture that recognises and promotes innovationrdquo Itrsquos not enough to have innovators ndash history is littered with the gravestones of innovators that were roundly ignored until hundreds of years after their death We need a chain that links the innovators to those that have the resources to see these ideas realised and a surrounding culture that quickly disseminates and adopts such solutions

One Health is an attempt to create a greenhouse for innovative health ventures that display genuine upstream thinking An incubator is in many ways like the mangrove swamps bordering the Great Barrier Reef that the majority of fish species hatch or spawn within before taking their place in the open waters of the reef itself At One Health we select shelter support and grow projects that others wonrsquot It is therefore to my great joy that our venture partners are also gaining increased recognition for the innovative nature of their programs Their projects tackle the largely unrecognized upstream drivers of poor health whilst simultaneously addressing their recipientsrsquo most pressing immediate health needs

At the other end of the spectrum are our philanthropic and business partners who understand that there can be no band-aid solutions They get our focus on creating impact that we define as lsquodeeprsquo and our definition of scale which centres on long term sustainability

To all these visionary souls I offer my heartfelt thanks Together we are creating lsquohealth for allrsquo one venture at a time

CREATING GOOD FOUNDATIONS Through Philanthropic Partnerships

This year One Health received its very first Philanthropic funding from the

English Family Foundation This marks a major strategic shift for the organisation which up until this point has operated under a strict social enterprise model and generated 100 of its funds through B2B exchanges The reason for this strategic shift was two-fold not only was it limiting our impact we also realised that the philanthropic community has incredible knowledge and experience in the kind of sector development that One Health is engaged in

After conducting a landscape review the strongest alignment was found with the English Family Foundation due to their explicit passion for innovation and a willingness to invest in capacity building and sector development After a series of discussions with EFFrsquos Executive Officer Belinda Morrissey it was agreed that rather than funding One Health to capacity

build our partners greater leverage would be gained by EFF funding the capacity building of One Health itself

It was with great excitement that we then had the opportunity to be on the receiving end of the incubation and mentorship process over a 3 month extensive business strategy review with Stephen Penny and the team from Good Foundations

ldquoGood Foundations put us back on the receiving end of the incubation process which was so incredibly valuable Their systemic review of our financial strategy was priceless but more importantly perhaps was an unexpected clarifying of our mission and purposerdquo

WHAT WE LEARNT

OUR GOOD FOUNDATIONS

That our unique approach to embedding knowledge into organisations is what sets us apart from similar entities

That our specialisation in lsquoamplifying impactrsquo has applications in the business sector which can be tapped to diversify our revenue streams

That by increasing the sustainability of our venture partners we are increasing their scale (over time)

14 15

This year Dr Jimi Wollumbin One Healthrsquos founder and CEO was invited to speak at many events both here in Australia and abroad The following are excerpts from Jimirsquos keynote address to the American Integrative Health amp Medicine Conference in San Diego

ldquoWe clearly cannot remedy with

pills what has been perpetrated via

legislation and trade agreements

Offering politically disenfranchised amp

economically enslaved communities

anything less than our total solidarity

in their bid to safeguard basic human

rights is not only ethically abhorrent but

demeaning to the Hippocratic profession

to which we all belongrdquo

ldquoAs doctors we have this incredible

opportunity because the ill health of the

population puts a human face on the

ways in which the surrounding culture is

not whole is not healthy If we are to help

make our global culture whole then we

must seek out the wellsprings of disease in

a broader environment than a pathology

lab reportrdquo

ldquoThe current global health dialogue

implies that it is possible to achieve world

health without significantly challenging

the social structures that continue to

create the worldrsquos healthcare crisis that

with just a bit more research funding wersquoll

find the right pill This narrative is one of

the central obstacles for us to overcome in

our bid to secure health for allrdquo

COLLABORATION IS THE KEY

ONE HEALTHrsquoS VOICE ON THE WORLD STAGE

Collaboration is a core value of One Health we believe it is the only way that our common dream of lsquohealth for allrsquo can be achieved

We already collaborate with our project partners

We already pick projects that collaborate with their recipient communities

We already collaborate with businesses

We are ready to collaborate with other incubators

2016 saw the beginning of this process in earnest with a range of conversations and think tanks sessions taking place between One Health and the handful of other service providers in Australia

A recent study conducted by The School for Social Entrepreneurs (SSE) and The Social Impact Hub interviewed 57 social entrepreneurs and identified this lack of collaboration as one of the central hurdles to be overcome

ldquoContributing to the unmet needs of social entrepreneurs is the fragmented nature of the social enterprise sector in Australia The sector has grown organically in response to the growing number of social enterprises but in an often opportunistic and uncoordinated manner such that intermediaries operate independently alongside each other but without real reference to the work of each otherrdquo

We are ready to solve this

ldquoIt is my belief that One Health is one of the leaders in incubating social change in this country Their unique approach to deep-mentorship and embedding knowledge ensures their investment in building the capacity of individuals and organisations is lasting and impactful One Health is a hotbed of innovative ideas and hard-earned experience with sector-wide relevance SSE and OneHealth explored partnership opportunities and I would endorse their value based collaborative approach for anyone seeking a partner to support the development of grassroots enterprisesrdquo

A perfect storm is brewing for organisations engaged in activities

with positive social impact

It may come as a surprise to learn that The Not For Profit sector is one of the fastest growing areas of the Australian Economy growing at nearly twice the rate of the mining sector over the last decade Itrsquos also large - PWCrsquos 2014 Community Index Report places its value at over $100 billion and growing

In light of mounting financial pressures governments across Australia are increasingly turning to the NFP sector to fill the gap in the provision of essential services and provide better social outcomes for marginalised Australians

At the same time we are also seeing an unprecedented global shift occurring in consumer demand for ethical and socially responsible products and businesses

The commercial landscape is rapidly transforming indeed with a recent global study published in 2015 making it clear that Social Responsibility in business isnrsquot a nice to have but a strategic necessity

bull Given similar price and quality 90 of consumers surveyed are likely to switch brands to one associated with a good cause

bull 71 are willing to pay more for a socially and environmentally responsible product

bull 80 would be willing to buy a product from an unknown brand if it had strong social and environmental commitments

bull 81 of consumers cite unavailability as the main reason that they do not purchase products that are socially responsible with 84 saying they proactively seek out these products when they shop

bull 88 want companies to tell them what they are doing to operate responsibly and support important issues

Of course in order for such relationships to be truly impactful they need to be relevant to both the brand and the consumer It is not enough to just jump on the bandwagon of the latest lsquocause du jourrsquo rather it is about finding meaningful issues and working collaboratively to create genuine impact

lsquoWIDE-IMPACTrsquo reaches a very large surface area of individuals and effects change due to the breadth of its scope This is perfectly suited to information campaigns and distribution of general services (such as water purification technology)

lsquoDEEP IMPACTrsquo reaches a much smaller number of recipients quantitatively but generally works with them for a longer period of time This is better suited for deeply entrenched social problems that deal with disenfranchised communities and trans-generational trauma

At OHO we work in both manners at times but generally support projects with a deep-impact approach as we have found them more in tune with the cultural nuances necessary to create lasting social impact whilst preserving community empowerment

Whilst the introduction of market based strategies into the community sector has been an extremely positive process an unintended side-effect of the meeting of these worlds has been a subtle redefining of impact in more quantitative terms To illustrate the point One Health has qualified the term in the following manner

Benjamin began his career in television working for British Sky Broadcasting and MTV Networks Europe before returning to Australia to pursue a career in advertising and media He has held senior positions in some of Australiarsquos largest media agencies and most influential brand strategy houses before turning his attention to the social sector and One Health As Head of Social Enterprise for One Health he is passionate about the potential for lsquogood businessrsquo to transform the world

That our unique approach to embedding knowledge into organisations is what sets us apart from similar entities

For more information or to see how your business can benefit from a relationship with One Health contact Benjaminonehealthorganiationorg

We amplify social change

Page 3: ANNUAL REPORT 2016 - One Health Organisationonehealthorganisation.org/wp...Annual-Report-2016...solutions to the upstream drivers of preventable disease. THE CHALLENGE OF SCALING LOCAL

2

In addition to ongoing quarterly product and financial donations SEOC is also leading the way in staff engagement having invited staff over the Xmas period to create special balms for dialysis patients in Central Australia and professionally developed essential oil blends for birthing mothers in earthquake ravaged Philippines

lsquoWIDE-IMPACTrsquo reaches a very large surface area of individuals and effects change due to the breadth of its scope This is perfectly suited to information campaigns and distribution of general services (such as water purification technology)

lsquoDEEP IMPACTrsquo reaches a much smaller number of recipients quantitatively but generally works with them for a longer period of time This is better suited for deeply entrenched social problems that deal with disenfranchised communities and trans-generational trauma
