Message from the President
The year was a relatively quiet one on the competiton front
with no major multi-sport event on our calendar.
Nevertheless, our elite gymnasts never stopped training in
their relentless pursuit for peak performance. By the time
you read this, the results of how we fare at the August SEA
Games in Malaysia would be out.
Regardless of that result, we can take heart in our training programme based on the
results of our junior gymnasts who competed at the recent Asean Schools Games in
July. Gymnastics was the major medal contributor for the Singapore contingent,
garnering a total of 9 golds, 5 silvers and 6 bronzes. Our heartiest congratulations to
our gymnasts and coaches for a job well done!
Outside of the field of play, SG office was far from quiet though! We underwent a
challenging period which saw the departure of Janssen, Ellie and She-Na, effectively
reducing the Secretariat to less than half-strength. We had to work tirelessly to
ensure that the organisational knowledge was not lost in transition whilst restructuring
the Secretariat, a concept, which with all credit due, first came from the Secretariat
themselves.
At this point, I must say a big Thank You to our volunteer consultant, Pak Kheng, for
literallly ‘taking over the captaincy of the ship’. Kudos must also go to Madeline and
Clarence, our Secretary and Deputy Secretary respectively, for spending so much
time to guide the Secretariat and to put in place the restructuring framework.
We are not totally out of the woods yet, but with new General Manager, Karen
Norden, formerly of Gymnastics Australia, at the helm and a more technically
inclined Secretariat, I am confident that we are moving in the right direction.
Our aim is to be the representative and governing body for all things gymnastics in
Singapore. Key to fulfilling this is our ability to work with all stakeholders – our
members, clubs, schools and Sports SG - expect to see and hear a lot more from
Singapore Gymnastics in the coming year!
Yours Respectfully,
Choy Kah Kin

Marketing Report
Electronic & Social Media Platforms
Singapore Gymnastics employs the use of a variety of electronic tools to keep
members updated of our events and promote the sport to the public. While our
website remains the main communication platform for official matters and updates
on latest events, maintaining our presence on various social media platforms allow us
to engage our audience to pick up interest and drive users to our website.

Photographs
SG accredits volunteer photographers at our events to take photos for sale. The sale
of these photos have proven popular with competitors, and in this FY has netted us a
profit of $921 as at 31 March 2017. The sales continue online and are a source of
constant income for SG.
The photographs are property of SG and are also used to give our collaterals a
professional look while showcasing the beauty of our sport. SG will continue to engage
photographers for our events to generate photos to visually captivate our audience.
Ticketing
Ticketing remains a significant source of income to help cover costs of running our
events. Our ticketing strategy remains unchanged. Tickets are priced affordably
ranging from $5 to $10 for local events.
In a bid to bring gymnastics to the masses, GymFest 2016 was held in a public space
and tickets were not charged.
Compared to National Championships 2016, we saw a 64% increase in ticket sales for
the National Championships 2017, and a small increase in ticket sales for Singapore
Open. Overall for FY17, there has been an increase in 22% for ticket sales, compared
to FY16.
11
Sponsorships
SG seeks donations and sponsorships from corporations and individuals to fund our
various programms and support elite gymnasts. Our initiatives range from ensuring
our events run at positive margins to providing training support and equipment to
support the development of elite gymnasts. Our corporate sponsors have seen their
brands being strengthened through their active involvement in our causes and
events.
For the financial year ending 31 March 2017, total sponsorship in cash received
amounted to $200. Total sponsorship in kind amounted to $5,000.
Fundraising
A charity golf fundraising event was held on 18 October 2016 at Orchid Country
Club to raise funds for SG’s high-performance programs. The golf charity saw
members of our community from various backgrounds and disciplines come
together to seek donations from corporates and individuals. The funds raised will go
towards developing better programs for the advancement of our high-performance
goals. Funds raised from this event totalled $171,558.50.
The event was a huge success, and we look to organise more fundraising events to
generate an income stream independent of our grant.

Participation & Membership
National Competitions
Singapore Gymnastics organises 2 key annual
competitions at Bishan Sports Hall for competitive
gymnasts to compete locally and progress along the
pre-determined competition pathway. Grading
exercises conducted at these events monitor athlete
progress and identify talented athletes for the elite
pathway.
These events were successfully delivered with the
collaboration of staff and management
committee members, respective discipline
technical representatives, contractors, judges and
volunteers.
A volunteer appreciation was held on 11 January
2017 to celebrate our successful events and thank
key volunteers for their contributions. We look
forward to working with them closely in future.
Singapore Open 2016
Singapore Open remains one of the few FIG-sanctioned competitions for MAG, WAG,
& RG in this region. The steady stream of competitors from greater Southeast Asia
annually is testament to our competition organising abilities and judging standards,
which we strive to continually better.
Trampoline was added for the first time to the Singapore Open, with the launch of the
Trampoline National Development Pathway, 8 clubs and schools took part.
Participation rates rose yet again this year, to a total of 611 gymnasts, an increase of
8.34% compared to last year.

Judging
Singapore Gymnastics successfully re-qualified a significant number of Brevet judges
in the new cycle. As with every first year in the cycle, in the first quarter of 2017,
significant effort was spent educating and supporting our FIG judges by holding
workshops and preparation sessions to help them successfully achieve their Brevet.
FIG judges are also subsidised for attending the FIG Brevet course & exam. Judges’
technical expertise help ensure routines’ adherence to code, gymnasts’ readiness for
competitions, to maximise our achievable scores at competitions.
In return, judges are required to commit a minimum of 15 judging hours a year. Hours
are tracked and help determine judges’ priority for overseas competitions and
judging subsidies for the next cycle, to ensure a transparent and robust judging
framework and returns of investment.
To increase the pool of judges and improve judging standards, judging and refresher
courses are held. Courses organised this FY:
• RG Level 1 – May 2016
• TRA Level 1 – June 2016
• RG Level 3 conducted by Gymnastics Australia – September 2016
• RG Level 2 – February 2017

High Performance
This year saw all high-performance squads prepare for selection for the 2017 SEA
Games. Efforts were focused around improving the abilities & performance of our SEA
Games squad members, with an eye on our targets for the 29th SEA Games in August
2017. 2016 and 2017 being major games crucial preparation years also set the stage
for the 2017 SEA Games, and 2018 Commonwealth Games, Asian Games & Youth
Olympic Games respectively.
Men’s Artistic Gymnastics (MAG)
This was a year of learning for our Men’s squad. The Kansai University Games held in
Apr 2016 was an eye-opener for Lincoln Forest, Zac Liew, Kaeson Lim, Robin Sim, Eli
Low, as they polished crucial competition skills and learnt from Kansai’s best.
To facilitate exchange of knowledge and learn new training methodologies, the team
under Coach Ryosuke Kusumi participated in training camps held in Osaka in June
2016, as well as Tokyo & Niigata in December 2016 where they also had the
opportunity to learn from world-champion team Japan.
MAG Juniors fared well at Singapore Open 2016, achieving IAA 4th and finishing Top 3
for Parallel Bars and High Bar in a competition which counted Malaysia & Thailand’s
top Juniors as competitors. At the SEAGZONE Artistic Junior & Age Group
Championships held in Hanoi in Aug 2016, the team consisting of Sean Yeo, Lincoln
Forest Liqht Man, and Robin Sim achieved Team 3rd.

Women’s Artistic Gymnastics (WAG)
2016 Pacific Rim Championships held in April was a highly competitive event featuring
many top-level teams including USA, Canada, Japan amongst others, and was a
good learning experience for our team which included 2 Senior newbies Sze En &
Colette. The Senior team consisting of Tan Sze En, Nadine Nathan, Janessa Dai, Zeng
Qiyan & Colette Chan came in 7th. Tan Sze En finished 11th All-Around with 50.550, a
respectable performance for her first international meet, while Nadine Nathan was
not far behind in 14th position. Top Seniors Sze En & Nadine also went on to compete
at the Anadia World Cup 2016 in June.
The Senior squad preparing for SEA Games also had the privilege of working with
choreographer & coach Stacey Umeh of Australia, in Dec 2016 & Feb 2017, who
reworked dance choreography and boosted artistry for all floor routines. In Dec 2016,
the team also underwent an intensive training camp in Beijing at the national training
centre and benefitted from joint sessions with the Chinese national team. In
preparation for SEA Games 2017, the team consisting of Zeng Qiyan, Kelsie Muir,
Colette Chan, & Nadine Nathan competed at the EnBW DTB-Pokal Team Challenge
in Mar 2017 for the first time in the new code.
WAG Juniors Ng Le En, Gemma Mollison, Lim Sze, Nydia Heng, Shayne Tan & Skye
Phua took part for the first time in an international meet at the Hong Kong Invitational
in Jan 2017 and completed a successful competition. Gemma Mollison ranked 3rd for
IAA, Nydia Heng won 3rd on Bars, Lim Sze came in 3rd on Beam, and Ng Le En won 2nd
place for Floor Exercise. Their podium finishes set them up for future success and bodes
well for the development of the WAG pipeline.

Rhythmic Gymnastics (RG)
Singapore continues to provide opportunities for gymnasts to participate at high level
competitions. At the Asian 14th Junior Rhythmic Gymnastics Asian Championships
held in Tashkent in Apr 2016, we were represented by 3rd-year Juniors Michele Lau &
Avryl Tan, who were preparing for SEA Games 2017, and 2nd-year Junior Aiko Tan.
Against Asia’s best Juniors, Michele placed 22nd in the All-Around competition and
qualified as 1st reserve.
Our close friendship with Azerbaijan Gymnastics Federation led to a fruitful training
camp at the RG national training centre in Baku. All SEA Games 2017 squad members,
as well as 2nd-year Juniors, attended this camp in Dec 2016. Athletes were privileged
to have the help of Azerbaijani national team coaches, dance experts, and sports
medicine staff, who worked seamlessly with our coach & officials to facilitate the
transfer of knowledge.
2017 Aphrodite Cup held in Greece in Mar 2017 was the perfect stage to showcase
our routines in the new 2017 code. Our newly formed Senior Group competed for the
first time this cycle, and achieved an all-around score of 22.750. We were represented
in the Senior Individual category by Edlyn Ho, Michele Lau, Phebe Lau, Tong Kah Mun
& Yeo Siew Lyn. In the Junior Individual category, we were represented by Aiko Tan,
Alicia Lim, Leah Chew, & Tammy Ng. In the Senior Group category, our members
were: Edlyn Ho, Michele Lau, Yeo Siew Lyn, Phebe Lau, Jael Chew. Tong Kah Mun
finished 13th All-Around, with a score of 51.550.

Conflict of Interest
MC, AC and Sub-Committee members are expected to avoid actual and perceived
conflicts of interest. Where these members have personal interests in business
transactions or contracts that SG may enter into, or have vested interests in other
organizations that SG have dealings with or is considering to entire into joint ventures
with, they are expected to declare such interests to the MC as soon as possible and
abstain from discussion and decision-making on the matter. Where such conflicts exist,
the MC will evaluate whether any potential conflicts of interest will affect the
continuing independence of MC members and whether it is appropriate for the
member to continue to remain on the committee.
Reserves Position
As per our Reserves Policy, the Management Committee aims to provide stability to
fund the structural costs in case of a decline in SportSG’s subsidies. The Management
Committee reviews the annual surplus semi-annually and apportions 30% of the surplus
to a restricted reserve.
The Management Committee aims to build up this fund to about SGD500K or
approximately equivalent of one year of salaries. About SGD100K will be held in an
operating bank account to fund working capital requirements. Since setting up the
reserves fund in 2010, the reserves have been held in a separate Fixed Deposit
account. The current amount is adequate to cover at least salaries for re-employment
transition in case this NSA should stop operations.
SG is up to date with the submission of our Online Evaluation Checklist via the Charity
Portal and the renewal of our Institute of Public Character (IPC) Status.
