LETTER FROM THE CEO

2 | ANNUAL REPORT 2015

Another year of fulfilling dreams

This has caught the interest of international investors. Many realize there are few countries, outside the US, with the same industrial breadth and depth as Sweden. We have industry giants in almost all industry sectors, despite the small size of our country. We also have skilled developers, a growing number of serial entrepre-neurs, a creative workforce and loyal employees. I believe there is only one vital link missing in the Swedish startup ecosystem – the participation by the Swedish corporations. In the US, the large corporates play a significant role as early customers to startups, acquirers of them, investors in them, etc. In Sweden, very few established companies view startups as a valu-able way of scouting new innovations for future growth. During 2015, we have therefore launched several initia-tives to address this problem, and to close the gap be-tween startups and corporations.

STING COMPANIES MAKING HEADLINESLet me share some 2015 highlights from the STING companies. Barnebys, the aggregator of the world’s premium auction sites, raised another 4 million euro. Sellpy, the second-hand reseller company, experienced impressive growth and went from zero to 300,000 euro in revenue during the fall. MIND Music Labs presented the world’s first real smart guitar. Airinum, producer of the 21st century urban breathing mask, closed its Kickstarter campaign reaching 700+ percent of its initial funding goal. The medtech company Antrad Medical raised 2.2 million euro from the Markman family, and Yubico, the USB and wireless authentication solution company based in Silicon Valley, reached 15 million euro in revenue.

MORE 2015 HIGHLIGHTS FROM STING’S ECOSYSTEMOut of more than 450 applications, STING selected 28 new startups to join the STING Incubate and STING Accelerate programs, including Sellpy (which you can read more about in the feature on pages 16 – 18).

10 years ago, companies such as

Tobii Technologies, Izettle, Klarna, Spotify and King were young startups. Today, they are some of many new Swedish companies that in the last decennial have turned into successful international companies.

LETTER FROM THE CEO

ANNUAL REPORT 2015 | 3

In March 2016, we opened THINGS – a 2,000 sqm co-working space for startups within the areas of Internet of Things, 3D printing and wearable devices, located on the main campus of the Royal Institute of Technology. THINGS houses 33 startups and is the natural hub for hardware-based startups in Stockholm. The startups there have access to 3D printers and laser cutters, and also to the university’s extensive prototype facilities, for building their first prototypes. In the base-ment, Stockholm Makerspace and a biohacking organ-ization have moved in. THINGS benefits from close re-lationships with corporate partners such as Assa Abloy, Husqvarna, NCC, ABB, SP, H&M and SEB, and are actively engaged in collaborations and startup projects, which is rarely seen in other partnerships. In 2014, we launched Propel Capital I, and during 2015, Propel Capital II was raised and backed by 18 business angels. Propel Capital II invests 32,000 euro in all startups accepted to the STING Accelerate program. During the fall, STING Test Drive Fintech was launched, a pre-incubator program for teams with busi-ness ideas within the financial technology area. We re-ceived an overwhelming number of 64 applications and finally 12 teams were selected. Main partners included NFT Ventures, MasterCard, SEB and Klarna, as well as the business daily Dagens Industri and Stockholm School of Economics. The digital health area is becoming increasingly interesting and therefore we have backed the develop-ment of H2, the new 1,000 sqm co-working space for digital health companies in Hagastaden in Stockholm. We have also turned our Kista office into a lab for early digital health projects. STING’s in-house recruitment support helped the STING companies with 36 tech recruitments – an impressive achievement in the very competitive recruit-ment landscape in Stockholm. We now have a unique competence and capacity to help recruit skilled talent to startups.

Staff wise, we have further strengthened the STING team with a new business coach within sustainability and health, Karin Ruiz, and a new event and office man-ager, Linda Wellgrant.

22 PERCENTAGE IN GROWTHSince 2002, we have backed 181 startups. Seventy-two percent of these are active and developing and generated a combined revenue of 122 MEUR in 2015, an increase of 22 percent from 2014. The number of employees in 2015 was 1,226, also an increase of 22 percent compared to the previous year. The 181 active companies have attracted 291 MEUR in equity since 2002 and 90 MEUR in public funding. As always when I look back at the year passed, I feel incredibly grateful to be working with these passionate entrepreneurs and helping them fulfill their dreams. Being part of the developments and the companies that will be the future of Sweden, and the world, is the best job I can imagine. If you have ideas on how to further strengthen our startup eco-system – please get in touch!

CASE: THE STORY OF SELLPY

The iconic blue IKEA bag can be found in every Swedish household. For most people, it is a convenient way to transport laundry and recycling. But for the three founders of Sellpy, the versatile shopping bag provided the prototype to build a 1 MEUR business in one year.

Like most successful startups, it all began when found-ing CEO Michael Arnör tried to solve a problem for him-self. He had just returned from spending two years in the United States and was clearing out his old room in his parents’ house. – Sorting through my belongings I hadn’t used over the past two years, I filled a few IKEA bags with good quality items that I didn’t want or need anymore. I real-ized they were too good to trash and would be able to provide value to others, but the challenge was trying to figure out what to do with this “stuff”, says Michael. He wondered how many other people had this prob-lem. After speaking to his friends Oskar Nielsen and

Philip Gunnstam it was clear that it wasn’t just him that had unwanted items sitting in drawers, taking up space and depreciating in value.

THE RAPID ACCUMULATION OF “STUFF”Online shopping has made purchasing the latest gadget or trendy outfit as easy as clicking a button, and as the new purchase arrives at the front door, the older version inevitably gets pushed to the back of the closet. – Marketplaces like Tradera and eBay have created an easy environment to trade second-hand items online, yet the majority of us would admit to having a drawer full of things that we should sell, but just haven’t got around

The “Stuff” Startup Dreams Are Made Of

Page 17: annual report 2015 - Sting

ANNUAL REPORT 2015 | 17

CASE: THE STORY OF SELLPY

to doing. Why is that? says Michael. The hypothesis is that although online marketplaces are easy to use, it is the logistics of listing your stuff and organizing to meet multiple buyers that are time con-suming and frustrating. Michael, Oskar and Philip recognized that a huge business opportunity lay in removing that logistical fric-tion. They founded Sellpy to help make online selling as easy as online buying.

THE SIMPLICITY OF THE OFFER…The proposition is simple – Sellpy helps you sell the stuff you no longer use. All you have to do is order a Sellpy bag via their website, www.sellpy.se, fill the bag with your old “stuff” and order a pick up. Sellpy takes care of the rest, and when your “stuff” is sold, you receive payment. There are just two rules: items must be legal, and they need to fit in a Sellpy bag.

...AND THE COMPLEXITY OF THE BACKENDTo the consumer, Sellpy is a savvy logistics company, but to the founders, it is fundamentally a tech company. The reason Sellpy has scaled from serving zero to more than 3,000 customers in just over a year is attributed to the proprietary software that the team developed.

Beyond the slick customer interface is a complex automated system that;

1. receives requests for Sellpy bags and pick ups

2. assigns unique tags to every item in the bag

3. keeps customers updated via notifications

4. tracks the bidding and final sale price of every item sold and

5. allocates payments for each bag

Infused with this high-tech solution, COO Oskar Nielsen oversees a casual workforce of 30 employees that sort through the items for defects, photograph quality items, write descriptions and list them on the Swedish equiva-lent of eBay, Tradera. Beyond this is an integrated stock management system that records every item on the warehouse shelf and an online store that lists thousands of individual products.

AN ITERATIVE PROCESS But it didn’t start out this slick. When the founding trio started the business, there was no software, no Sellpy bag and no team to help process the contents of the bag. Whilst validating the hypothesis they aimed to build as little as possible. – Our starting point was not building the app or the warehouse. We focused on providing the best possible service to their customers and solved the challenges as they arose from there, says CFO Philip Gunnstam. Their first customers were friends and family who filled their own IKEA bags with unwanted “stuff”. The Sellpy crew then sold the items online and split the pro-ceeds with the bag provider. After just two weeks, Sellpy had their first “genuine” customer – a request for a pick up from someone they didn’t know! Excited that their offering was gaining trac-tion, they jumped in an Uber to pick up the bag. – That was what we call the “luxurious” pick up! Following pickups involved us lugging bundles of bulky bags across Stockholm via the subway system, says Oskar with a smile. News of their service spread and to keep up with the rising demand, the Sellpy team were purchasing 600 bags every time they went to IKEA. But what later came back in those bags from their customers was very differ-ent from what the founders had envisioned.

Page 18: annual report 2015 - Sting

18 | ANNUAL REPORT 2015

Their initial pilot bags were filled with high-value elec-tronics and kitchen appliances, yet the majority of items sent in from customers were now clothes. Slightly skep-tical, they listed the clothing items on Tradera and were delighted to discover a strong demand for second-hand clothing. In fact, Sellpy now generates the majority of its revenue from this previously overlooked category. As Sellpy bags of “stuff” continued to roll in, the founding team devised a manual tracking system of Post-it notes on IKEA bags. Once they had developed a natural rhythm they measured everything. – We timed how long it took to sort the bags, photo-graph items, write descriptions, list the product and sell it. Essentially, we were measuring the cost of turning the contents of the bag into cash, says Philip. Measurement is key to every business, but under-standing the costs associated with each activity is inte-gral to the success of this cost-driven business. Whilst most traditional businesses set the selling price of their products, Sellpy’s selling price is determined by the final bidding price of the buyer on the Tradera platform. As every item in the bag is listed at a 50 Swedish crowns starting price (approx. 5 euro), the revenue generated from a single item can range from 50 to 8,000 crowns, making forecasting challenging. However, costs can be controlled, and by reducing costs, margins can be pro-tected. Armed with data and insights, the Post-it notes were replaced with dynamic software that now streamlines the process and provides insight on how to further reduce costs. For example, after a few months of operating they realized that not every sale was a good sale. – When we started, we tried to sell everything that was sent in the bag – even if the listed price was just 1 Swedish crown. But after calculating the processing and courier costs, we set the starting price at 50, says Philip. To this day if items cannot be sold for 50 crowns, the sender of the bag is notified and upon their consent, the item is donated to charity. This streamlining strategy to remove low value stock has added even more value to the Sellpy offering as customers know that if they don’t get cash for their item, at least it goes to a good cause. These efficiency metrics have also proven to be very valuable whilst fundraising – providing potential investors with the data they need to make their investment deci-sions. – It is important to anticipate the questions that poten-tial investors will ask and then build the business KPIs to address those questions, explains Philip.

1 MILLION EURO INVESTMENTThis fundraising strategy is definitely working. To date, there has been a total of 1 million euro invested in Sellpy from multiple sources, including Swedish retail group H&M, which invested over 500,000 euro in January 2016. The investment, and the non-financial support that comes with it, has been key to Sellpy’s rapid growth. Although the business has been revenue generating from day one, finance has enabled the team to take sal-aries from the start, continuously develop their system, double their warehouse size and scale their operations. – During this time, the STING ecosystem provided a foothold in the community, a competitive startup en-vironment and coaches that helped us keep the focus on the right things, which was very valuable for us, says Michael.

A SELLPY BAG IN EVERY HOMEWith the latest round of investment, Sellpy is geared to expand into larger “stuff-accumulating” markets such as Europe and the United States. With that expansion will come further learning. Clothes are much cheaper in the new markets Sellpy will be entering and the team is curious to see how this will impact the contents of the Sellpy bag. The beauty of the simple “it must fit in the bag” rule is its ability to adapt to new markets. It is the customer that determines what goes into the Sellpy bag and it is the market that determines its selling price. – As long as consumers keep accumulating “stuff” and the global “reuse” market gains further traction, we’re on track to realize our global ambition; that in every Western household, next to the IKEA bag with things to recycle, there will be a Sellpy bag of “stuff” ready to be resold, says Michael.
