HEAD OF SCHOOL YEAR END REVIEW OF 2015

The School of Biomedical Sciences was launched in 2015 in a year of transitions and new beginnings. At the beginning of 2015 the Melbourne Medical School was separated into two Schools to form the new Melbourne Medical School (clinical departments) and the new School of Biomedical Sciences (biomedical science departments).

This will open up new and exciting opportunities for us to develop strong collaborative relationships that capitalise on the increasing synergies between biomedicine, science, engineering and industry, while we maintain our strong existing biomedical research and clinical relationships.

I would particularly like to thank Professor Stephen Harrap for his excellent stewardship of the School during its formation and early days. The School was officially launched on Friday 9th October 2015, shortly after my appointment in August. The launch featured an inspiring keynote address by Professor Suzanne Cory, who holds a Doctor of Laws from the University of Melbourne and is one of Australia’s most distinguished scientists.

Elisa Smoljko - Rosehill Secondary College – ‘Colourful creatures’

Our annual Art meets Science competitions were celebrated with a stunning exhibition of images from the Harry Brookes Allen Anatomy drawing competition and the Under the Coverslip competition of microscopy photographs. A hugely popular biomedical sciences day for secondary school students was introduced in collaboration with the Gene Technology Access Centre, where the students participated in secondary school categories of the competitions.

After four months in this role, I feel enormously privileged to lead this new School and am immensely proud of what we have collectively achieved in the first year of our new School’s history. In 2015 our success rates in all grant schemes have been significantly above the national average, we published 106 papers in top quartile journals, 67 RhD candidates completed their Doctor of Philosophy or Master of Philosophy, and 106 researchers received national and international awards.

Our new School’s proud long history in biomedical research continued in 2015, which is a testament to the hard work, inspiring passion, dedication and excellence of our researchers, lecturers, supervisors, mentors, and, of course, our brilliant students, as shown in the following pages.

‘Colourful Creatures,’ a wasp, taken with a Scanning Electron Microscope by Elisa Smolijko from Rosehill Secondary College, won first prize in the student section of Under the Coverslip competition.

Students in the Harry Brookes Allen Museum of Anatomy and Pathology use a variety of mediums and techniques to creatively interpret specimens for their Anatomy Drawing competition entries.
