Dear Friends,

We are pleased to present the 2015 Sharon Towers’ Annual Report for your review. The year was one of growth and change.

After many months of planning, Sharon Towers broke ground on its first Magnolia Villa in August. This three story Villa will house eighteen independent living apartments ranging from approximately 1,350 to 1,990 square feet with underbuilding parking. It has been exciting to watch construction as it rises out of the ground. Plans are underway to begin site work for our second Magnolia Villa in early 2016. The Villa additions are part of a larger campus master plan created to enable the future extensive renovation/addition to our Health Care Center.

Also, in keeping with our strategic plan, Sharon Towers began admitting individuals from the greater community into its short-term rehab unit in March. An unexpected benefit of these temporary outside admissions is the request of several to make Sharon Towers their permanent home.

In July, Sharon Towers underwent its annual Medicare Certification survey. The survey resulted in zero deficiencies, which automatically gave Sharon Towers a five star rating (the top rating) with the Centers for Medicare/Medicaid Services. As of the writing of this letter, Sharon Towers is one of only two facilities in the Charlotte area that has a five star rating across the board (overall, quality measures, staffing, and health inspections).

As always, our mission to care for those with limited or depleted financial resources continues. Sharon Towers provided $885,843 in financial assistance to both residents and prospective residents unable to financially qualify to come to our community. It is difficult to adequately express our gratitude to the many generous donors who make the assistance we provide possible.

ALZHEIMER’S ASSOCIATION:

We find that virtually everyone at Sharon Towers has known someone affected by the degenerative disease of Alzheimer’s. As a result of this close tie we partner with and support the Carolina Piedmont Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association. On a monthly basis, Sharon Towers hosts an Alzheimer’s and Related Diseases Support Group for family and friends of those who have, or are beginning to suffer from, dementia. This group is open to residents, families, team members, friends and members of the greater community. Rooms are also provided for the Association’s Annual Walk Committee and Board of Directors for meeting space throughout the year.

Over the summer we selected a team captain, Director of Vitality and Well-being, Kelly Stranburg, to lead the effort for the Walk to End Alzheimer’s. Our team, Sharon Towers Walkers, recruited 84 residents and team members to join – this is a record for the Carolina Piedmont Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association! Sharon Towers Walkers diligently raised funds for increased awareness, medical research, and hopefully, the ultimate cure of this disease. We hosted a “Bank Day,” where team leaders from surrounding

businesses came to Sharon Towers for some hospitality when delivering their donations for the annual Walk to End Alzheimer’s. We printed our own t-shirts for the walk and, despite the rainy weather this year, 45 residents, team members and loved ones showed support by walking together. This year the Sharon Towers Walkers raised $11,007 for Alzheimer’s research! This is an all-time record for Sharon Towers!

AVONDALE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH BAG MEAL MINISTRY:

If you find yourself at Sharon Towers on a Thursday afternoon around 4pm, you are likely to see an interesting phenomenon - residents and team members converging on the Sharon Room from virtually every direction. We are getting together to make bag meals for the homeless, which will later be delivered by volunteers from Avondale Presbyterian. Each week we assemble meals that consist of a meat and cheese sandwich, Lance crackers, a fruit cup, Fig Newtons and a bottle of water. In 2015, the “sandwich makers” produced 2,940 bagged meals.

CLASSROOM CENTRAL:

Classroom Central gives a rather unusual shopping opportunity to teachers of school-aged children living in poverty and supports Mecklenburg as well as six other surrounding counties. Classroom Central solicits and accepts donations of goods and supplies which will help support impoverished children, then opens its’ doors to their teachers to come and select any materials they like for free. To assist in this effort, residents and team members hosted a summer School Tools Drive and managed to collect over 100 individual school supply items! We also collected $565 in cash donations.

Further, our Knitter’s Unite group meets monthly to share patterns, knit, crochet, spend time together and support Classroom Central in a most loving way. In 2015, resident members of Knitter’s United hand-made over 942 individual hats and scarves for children who could not afford warm clothing. As an adjunct to this program, we saved “Boxtops for Education” to assist teachers through Classroom Central. Residents are encouraged to clip their “Boxtops for Education” from everyday grocery products, bring them to the Resident Resource Center, then we bundle them for the teachers to turn in for cash for school supplies.

COUPONS FOR SERVICEMEN:

Our Health Care and Assisted Living residents volunteer hours of their time clipping coupons for Coupons for Servicemen. Each month residents clip coupons, which are then sorted and mailed to a military base. Servicemen and their families are able to use the coupons on the base, even if they are expired!

CRISIS ASSISTANCE:

Sharon Towers began partnering with Crisis Assistance in 2008 and provides 150 bag lunches, every other week, for those receiving assistance at the agency during their lunch break. Bag lunches are delivered by our team members and we served 3,600 lunches in 2015. Also each week our Treasure Chest volunteers determine which goods we have received as donations, but do not fit in with our other merchandise. We then pack those clothes, shoes and accessories and send them to Crisis Assistance with our bi-weekly lunch ministry.

MEETING SPACES:

haron Towers is blessed to have many rooms available for groups, church circles and community organizations to meet. Over 25 churches and community organizations use our facilities throughout the year for meetings and gatherings. Providing a meeting space for various organizations allows Sharon Towers to showcase our beautiful facility all while providing a convenient meeting space to our friends in the community.

THE TREASURE CHEST:

Residents, family members, team members and volunteers are invited to shop in the Treasure Chest for tremendous bargains on donated merchandise. The Treasure Chest has a staff of highly dedicated resident volunteers who invest countless hours of time and tons of energy working to collect, market and sell clothes, shoes and accessories with all profits going to enrich the lives of those living in Assisted Living and Health Care. Our grand event for 2015 was a Silent Auction in conjunction with a Trivia Night for residents. Overall the Treasure Chest raised almost $13,000 in 2015 and with those funds was able to purchase the iN2L (It’s Never Too Late) interactive computer system to be used in Health Care and Assisted Living.

Excitement is building as Sharon Towers moves forward in shaping its future, the look of our

campus and the construction of the Magnolia Villas. After years of planning the Board of

Directors of Sharon Towers voted to move forward with our Master Campus Plan in 2015,

outlining a new approach to serving our residents and the aging population of Charlotte.

The plan calls for expanded amenity space; different types of recreational and engaging

programs and opportunities; and new types of living accommodations on our campus. The

emphasis is to serve the whole individual and foster a culture where joy, purpose and well-

being is embedded in every aspect of the community.

Residents, current and former Board members, family members, team members and friends

of Sharon Towers gathered in April to celebrate the ground breaking of the first of many

expansions at Sharon Towers. Anne Moffat, CEO stated in her speech “the Villas are an

extension of Sharon Towers strategic plan.”

With the bulldozers ready to take the plunge, construction came to a halt thanks to several

new residents - two endangered Red-tailed hawks and their two babies. Red-tailed hawks

are legally protected in the U.S., Mexico and Canada, which meant that construction of

the new Villas would have to wait. Under the watchful eyes of residents, staff and Omega

Construction, the babies hatched and later learned to fly. News travelled fast that the couple

and their babies had flown the nest and soon dirt at the construction site began to move.

Construction of Magnolia Villa I is scheduled to be complete in late summer 2016.

Endowing the Future of Sharon Towers

WHAT IS PLANNED GIVING?

Planned gifts are usually made with assets accumulated during one’s

lifetime. The gift can be a designated portion of your estate or it can

be more specifically defined as a gift of securities, cash, insurance

policies, real estate and/or tangible personal property, including

collectibles.

ENDOWING YOUR GIFT

Although not required, most planned gifts are given to the Sharon

Towers’ Residents’ Assistance Endowment. This endowment’s assets

are invested and the annual earnings from the endowment are

available to support the mission and operations of the Resident’s

Assistance Program. The larger the endowment, the more impact

we can have on the residents who benefit from the program. Gifts

made to the Stroupe Legacy Circle enable Sharon Towers to plan

(long term) for the care of our residents who have outlived their

resources.

If you wish to designate your gift to support a specific area of

Sharon Towers’ mission, you are welcome to choose the area that

matches your area of greatest commitment. Gifts can be made to

Your gift will make a difference! You do not need to have amassed

great personal wealth to make a gift. Most of us have accumulated

some assets and are concerned about what person or cause they will

benefit, but no planned gift is too small. With sensible investment,

the smallest contribution will grow significantly over the years.

Imagine if your health started to decline and you had to seek skilled nursing care earlier than you

expected thus depleting your savings. What would you do if your mother or father needed your help

financially, but you were unable to come to their aid? Many of our residents and families face these

dilemmas each year, which could lead to despair. Thanks to Sharon Towers’ Residents’ Assistance Fund,

residents and their loved ones are assured that he or she will be

taken care of whether they need help with monthly service fees,

medication or getting their hair done.

The Residents’ Assistance fund goes to the heart of Sharon

Towers’ mission – enriching the lives of those we serve by

providing a nurturing environment that foster joy, purpose and

wellbeing. One daughter writes. “I was enormously relieved

at the help we found for our mother. Her income was simply

inadequate for her new status and I lacked the resources to

underwrite her needs as well. The help which Sharon Towers

was able to offer my mother allowed her to continue and find

ways to navigate her reduced physical world with confidence

and peace of mind.”

Gifts made to the Residents’ Assistance Fund make a difference in the lives of those living

at Sharon Towers every day, whether large or small. In 2015, thanks to the generosity of

our loyal donors, Sharon Towers provided $885, 843 in financial assistance to twenty-

two residents and prospective residents. Providing the funds for those in need while

maintaining their dignity is an amazing gift to give.
