Whoweare

TheAsiaPacificJournalismCentre(APJC)workswithnewsmediaandcommunitiestoadvancepubliccommunication.

WehelpjournalistsincountriesintheAsiaPacificregion,includingAustralia,buildprofessionalnetworksandexchangeprofessionalskillsandinsightsinsupportofrobust,independentandinformednewsreportingonpublicaffairs.Hundredsofmediaprofessionalshavetakenpartinourprograms,whichbroadlyfallintotwocategories:

• mediadevelopmentprogramsforjournalistsindevelopingcountries• culturalexchangeandinnovationprogramsformediaprofessionalsgenerally

APJC’smediadevelopmentprogramshelpbuildskillsforeffectiveandresponsiblemediaroles.Programtopicsincludebasicandspecialistreportingskills(suchasbusinessandeconomicreporting),post-conflictreporting,sociallyinclusivereporting,andnewmediaskills.Theseprogramsusuallyincludeapersonalleadershipcomponent.MediaprofessionalsfromIndonesia,Mongolia,Nepal,EastTimor,PapuaNewGuinea,Fiji,SolomonIslands,Vanuatu,Samoa,Tonga,Kiribati,Tuvalu,andMarshallIslandshavetakenpartintheseprograms.Ourexchangeprogramsseektobroadenthehorizonsofnewsmediaprofessionals.StudytourshavebeentoSoutheastAsiaandChina.Theprogramsprovidejournalistsanopportunitytolearnfirst-handaboutotherculturesandsocieties,andtheissuesthatconcernthem,tobetterinformcommunities.TheexchangeandinnovationprogramshavefocusedonAustralianmediaprofessionals(majority)andcolleaguesfromChina,Indonesia,Japan,Malaysia,Laos,Nepal,PapuaNewGuineaandNewCaledonia.APJChasalsoengagedinspecialinitiatives,includingpost-disastervideoconferencesforeditors,post-conflictconsultancy,andprogramsonunderstandinginternationaldevelopmentneedsandpoliticaltransition.

Ourmission

Inanever-changingmediaenvironment,APJCworkswithnewsmediaandothersinthecommunitytoadvanceidealsofgoodjournalism.Theorganisation’sobjectivesaretostrengthenthecapacityofjournalistsandnewsorganisationstoproducehighqualityandinformedjournalism.APJCworkswithcounterpartorganisationscommittedtosimilarobjectives,recognisingthateffectivejournalismistiedcloselytogoodgovernance,respectforhumanrightsandinternationalunderstanding.Webelieveastrongmediaprovidesaneffectiveframeworkforcommunitiestoengageinissuesofimportancetothem.Atthebroadestlevel,APJC’sinternationaldevelopmentprogramsaimtostrengthennewsmediaindevelopingcountriessothattheycanbetterplaytheirroleinthedevelopmentoftheirnation:bycarryingoutwithvigourandindependencethevitalgovernanceandpubliccommunicationfunctionsexpectedofmediainapubliclyaccountablepoliticalsystem.ThebulkofAPJC’sworktodatehasfocusedonempoweringnewsmediaprofessionalsformoreeffectiverolesintheirparticularnewsorganisationandintheirprofessionalcommunity.Amajorthemehasbeenonraisingawarenessandskillstoreportonissuesrelatedtosustainableeconomicandsocialdevelopmentintheregion,withactivitiesincorporatingperspectivesonhumanrightsissues,includingtherightsofwomenandminoritygroups,andtherightofmarginalisedpeopletoparticipateinandbefairlyrepresentedinthemedia.

JackWaterford,AMJackWaterfordiseditor-at-largewithTheCanberraTimes.Adistinguishedjournalistandcommentator,WaterfordisknownforhisinvestigativejournalismusingFreedomofInformationlegislationandhisworkandadvocacyonIndigenoushealthissues.HehasservedTheCanberraTimesaseditor-in-chiefandeditor.WaterfordwasnamedtheGrahamPerkinAustralianJournalistoftheYearin1985andwasaJeffersonFellowattheEast-WestCenterintheUSin1987.

JohnHenninghamJohnHenninghamisfounderanddirectorofthejournalismcollegeJschoolinBrisbaneandformerheadofQueenslandUniversity’sJournalismDepartment.Previously,HenninghamworkedasajournalistwiththeDailyMirror,TheSun,TheAustralianandtheAustralianBroadcastingCorporation.HehasbeenavisitingfellowandresearcherattheEast-WestCenter,theReuterFoundationatGreenCollege,OxfordUniversity,andtheLondonCollegeofPrinting.

JohnWallaceJohnWallaceisanAustralianjournalismeducatorwith25years’experienceininternationalmediadevelopmentintheAsiaPacificregion,includingpost-conflictworkinEastTimorandeditorialdevelopmentinIndonesia.AsajournalistheworkedwiththeABC,TheAge,NationReviewandReuters.

MessagefromAPJCdirector

The2015-16yearwasaperiodofadjustmentforAPJC,withreducedprogramactivity,acontractioninsecretariatstaff,andacommitmentbytheboardtokeepaliveAPJC’simportantmission.

Aswellasexperiencingadropinprogramfunding,thecentrehadtodealwitharequestfromDFAT,followingaroutineaudit,toreturnadditionalunspentfundsforprojectsruninyears2014and2015.

Thecentrecommittedtofacethechallengeposedbythechangedconditionsthroughrunningaleanerandmoreflexibleoperationandonecognisantoftheneedforimprovementsinfinancialmanagementandgovernance.

Intheprogramarea,APJCcontinueditspartnershipwiththeAll-ChinaJournalistAssociationandANZtoprepareforthefourthannualChinaAustraliaJournalistExchangeprogram,whichwasduetotakeplaceinlate2016.

ThecentresoughtfundingtocontinueitsInternationalDevelopmentJournalismFellowshipprogram,trialledwithWorldVisionin2014-15withthegoalofgivingearly-careerAustralianjournalistsabroaderunderstandingofdevelopmentchallengesintheregion.

APJCcontinueddiscussionswithpotentialpartnersonasocialmediatransparencyinitiativeforpotentialuseinPNGandothersouthwestPacificnations.

ItisworthrecallingthatinsettinguptheAPJCthefoundingdirectorswantedtoprovideaneffectivewayoftappingtheenergy,goodwillandresourcesofestablishednewsmedia,thefoundationsector,individualjournalistsandotherstosupportthedevelopmentofjournalismintheregion.

TheneedforacentrethatcanprovidethiskindofleadershipinAustraliacontinuestobeasimportantnowasthen,andmoresogiventhetransformationsaffectingthedeliveryandshapeofnewscausedbytheriseofsocialmediaanddisruptiontotherevenuestreamsofestablishednewsmedia.

Inaneraofuncertaintywelookforwardtosteadilycontinuingourmissionofmountinginnovativeprogramstohelpbuildthecapacityofnewsmediatoservecommunitiesinourregion.

Ø ChinajournalismsummerschoolAPJCiscurrentlyseekingfinancialsupportforanannualsummerschoolprogramaimedatpromotingbetterunderstandingandcooperationbetweenChineseandAustraliannewsmedia,andultimatelyhelpingstrengthenChina-Australiarelations.

Ø AustralianAwardsFellowshipprogramsAPJChasrunanumberofDFATsponsoredAustraliaAwardsfellowshipprogramssince2007.

Ø “WhatwethinkofAustralia”:essaysbyregionaljournalistsAPJCisinterestedincommissioningAsia-PacificregionaljournalistsandwriterstocontributetoavolumeofcontemporaryperspectivesonAustralianpoliticsandsociety.
