Annual Report

2014/2015

“LIFE’S ONLY LIMITATIONS ARE THE ONES WE

MAKE” (unknown)

The period under review has been a year of growth within the Friends of

the Children’s Hospital Association.

We saw the need to extend our Meal-a-Day project, from serving lunches

to offering light meals in the mornings and evenings as the number of

care-givers visiting the Family Resource Centre to partake of meals and

fellowship with one another increased dramatically. This service was

made possible through the dedication of our donors who partnered with

us on this project.

At the same time the Director and staff of the organisation found themselves stretched to the

limits in order to generate much-needed funds, to sustain our various projects that offer assis-

tance to the children.

Our two business enterprises, viz the Fund-raising shop and Kiosk, established to generate

non-designated income have gone through the usual fine-tuning process and we are proud to

report that we are satisfied with the fact that we are now on the right track to reach our goal of

self-sustainability. Our overall revenue increased from R1 678 235 last year to R1 997 923 this

year and our control systems have been tightened considerably.

Corporate donor funding has increased as well due a number of amazing donors who agreed to

enter into a long-term partnership with us.

We have been fortunate enough to be given valuable time on air by various well-known radio

stations and this enabled our director to disseminate information on the work carried out by

the Friends, to the greater community of the Western Cape.

I would be failing in my duty if I did not express our heartfelt thanks to our amazing

volunteers both short and long-term for the many hours dedicated to visiting our little ones,

spending quality time with them and just loving them unconditionally.

Thank you most sincerely too, to our Volunteers who fulfil Administrative functions alongside

staff. Needless to say, our volunteers are the lifeblood of our organisation and are highly

valued.

In the year ahead we intend forging new fundraising initiatives as well as improving on service

delivery by strengthening our Volunteer Management Programme.

In closing, I wish to express my heartfelt thanks to our donors, volunteers, Director and his

staff team for their dedication to improving the life of the caregivers, and the children within

the hospital.

Thank you to the Health Facilities Board, Hospital Management and staff as well as the

Children’s Hospital Trust for their co-operation and support to the Friends.

Appreciation and thanks goes to my esteemed colleagues serving on the Friends Management

Team and Board for their unwavering support and guidance throughout the year.

In particular, thanks is expressed to Andre Pieters and Dorothy Schulman who together have

given over 20yrs service to the Friends at governance level. They will not continue as board

members in the new-year and their input will be missed by those taking up the cudgels for the

next 3 year cycle.

In our 38th year of existence we look forward to continuing to improve our service delivery to

our beneficiaries, in collaboration with our amazingly supportive volunteers and donors in the

year ahead, giving voice to our Mission statement that says: ”In the care and recovery of sick

children FOCHA offers varied support that encourages active participation by the parents and

caregivers.”

Thank you

Annual Report

2014/2015

Director’s Report

Nelson Mandela said: “ …(Heroes) These are men and

women chosen to bring happiness into the hearts of

people-those are the real heroes.”

This year marks the 38th year of the existence of FOCHA. This

means that for more than 38 years FOCHA has been active in

providing services to alleviate the suffering and stress of families

at the hospital. Those who have been at the hospital for any extended period, has seen how FO-

CHA has grown from a small group of volunteers working out of the office of the Social Workers,

etc. to a constituted organization with a Board, full time staff, two shops and hundreds of volun-

teers and the Family Resource Centre that provides non-medical services to the patients, their

families as well as the various departments in the hospital.

With the support from the Facility Board and the Hospital Management, FOCHA has continued

to expand its activities in the hospital. These include both the Volunteer Service and the Family

Support Services. These services has provided much needed assistance to the vulnerable popula-

tion in the hospital. Last year, FOCHA provided opportunities to over 2079 volunteers to play and

read to the patients. Both local and International volunteers spent weeks at a time at the hospi-

tal, to make a meaningful difference to the health outcomes of the patients who are in need of just

being a normal child. They brought laughter, fun, games, toys, presents, etc. and friendship to the

wards, in exchange for the opportunity to make a difference in the life of the sick children.

FOCHA made use of International and Local Youth Agencies to bring young people to the hospi-

tal. These agencies provided volunteers all year round. They include agencies like:

International volunteer agencies:

1. Connect 123; 2 .Rainbow Garden

Village; 3. EF Language school;

4 .Volunteer Centre; 5 .Volunteer Ad-

venture Corps; 6. Goodhope Studies;

7. Dan Cape; 8. First Steps Abroad

9. Travellers Worldwide

Local Agencies:

Action Volunteer Agency; 2. Schools

and Colleges

FOCHA’s greatest assets are the long-

term local volunteers. Volunteers who

have been serving the hospital for up

to 31 years and counting. This year

five of our most valued long-term vol-

unteers retired. They have given a combined service of 101 years at the hospital. We salute Jean

Harker (31 years), Neville Atkinson (29 years), Gwen MacCrae (22 years); Joan Bryson (10 years)

and Patricia Mentoor (9 years). They will always be appreciated and remembered for generations

to come.

The FOCHA Board members are also volunteers of the highest calibre. They offer their time and

expertise to give strategic direction to the organizations staff. This year marks the end of a three

year cycle of governance. We wish to thank Mrs Dorothy Schulman the Secretary of the Board

and Mr Andre Pieters for their invaluable service to FOCHA over the years. We also thank our

existing Chairperson, Deputy Chairperson, Treasurer and other Board-and Co-opted members for

their dedicated and unselfish service to FOCHA during 2014/2015.

2014/2015

FOCHA’s Family Support services has also increased over this reporting period. This program

included various services such as providing 2-3 Meals a Day-, Donations-, Provision of clothing to

patients and families, Provision of toiletries to families, Provision of toys to patients, Support

Groups, Special Events, Group visits to the hospital, procuring special equipment and providing

a food parcel to families in need. Last year we provided 27193 meals to parents. This was possi-

ble with the help of partners such as MUSTADAFIN FOUNDATION, THE MARCH LADIES,

WARRIORS OF HOPE, ST.THOMAS CHURCH, COMMON GROUND

CHURCH,WOOLWORTHS MILNER ROAD, WOOLWORTHS BERGVLIET, PHC LOTUS

RIVER, NANDO’S, FREEZERLAND, and many more families and individual donors.

FOCHA was also blessed through CHATZ CHARITY, the charity arm of CHATZ MOBILE

COMPANY. The provided families with 360 food parcels, 360 toiletry packs and 360 children’s

toiletry and fun bags. FOCHA issued a total of 442 food parcels and 764 Toiletry packs to

families at the hospital. CHATZ also funded our Volunteer Appreciation Ceremony, paying for all

the food, certificates, decorations, hiring, etc. They have really assisted FOCHA in a big way.

Our FOCHA staff continue to form the central point around the services we provide at the

hospital. Last year, we said goodbye to Ursula Hodgin, our Volunteer Manager, who spent 18

years at the hospital. Ursula retired at the age of 70. We continue to miss her and the valuable

service she rendered.

FOCHA continue to offer quality services at the Red Cross War Memorial Hospital with the help

of the Hospital Facility Board and the Hospital Management Team. The relationship with the

hospital Management and hospital staff allows FOCHA to offer all the varied services. The

Nursing Administration and the Social Work Departments have throughout the existence of

FOCHA provided the organization with amazing support and advice. Without these two organs of

the hospital, FOCHA would not be able to provide these quality services.

The Hospital Security Services, both the provincial staff and the private securities, has also as-

sisted us greatly over the year. On behalf of the Board and staff, we wish to thank all our

Partners, donors, supporters, Hospital staff, the general public, etc. for the invaluable support

they have given FOCHA.

A special note of thank you needs to go to all our donors who have given us much

needed cash donations to operate the FAMILY RESOURCE CENTRE;

At the end of 2014/2015 Financial year, FOCHA strategically looked at its Vision and Mission for

the next 5 years. During these very important sessions, the Board of FOCHA adapted the Vision

and Mission Statement of the organization. The new Vision and Mission Statements will be

brought to the AGM to be held on 21 September 2015 for ratification and adoption.

The objective of this programme is to strengthen families and

communities whilst their children are in hospital. It aims to facili-

tate and enhance self-reliance and empowerment among caregivers.

We offer a range of care and support services by conducting weekly

orientation sessions with new admissions in the mothers’ rooms and

in the Wards to ensure that they have access to all relevant services

and activities. We continue to raise the awareness of moral

regeneration among the caregivers in the wards and mothers’ rooms

focusing on topics which enhances self-reliance and empowerment

among caregivers.

Our goal in the next few months is to implement workshops on:

Positive Parenting - Sex and sexuality - Family planning - Marriage

and family - Assertive parenting - Decision-making as well as the

role of men and boys in the home. These activities are conducted

through our existing support groups and parent education work-

shops. The outcomes of this objective are to ensure that caregivers

and families make informed decisions about issues that affect them

in the family home once their children are discharged from the

hospital.

Meal A Day Project

Breakfast:

FOCHA with the help of churches, groups and individuals, provides sand-

wiches, fruit, coffee and tea to parents for breakfast. For many parents,

this is the only meal since the lunch we served the previous day. On aver-

age 50 parents come to enjoy this limited meal with the other parents fac-

ing the same challenges. Breakfast is also served over some weekends

when we have visitors at the hospital. Anyone can donate bread, tea, cof-

fee, sugar, etc. and come and serve parents breakfast over weekends. We

served over 10 000 meals to destitute parents who were in need of some-

thing to eat and someone to talk to.

Lunch:

The MUSTADAFIN FOUNDATION

(A non-profit organization operating in

the Western Cape and Eastern Cape)

partnered with FOCHA to bring

healthy cooked meals to about 60-80

parents daily. Parents from our local

communities who choose to sit at the

bedside of their children are able to receive a warm cooked meal for lunch

from Mondays to Fridays. Through this partnership we were able to feed

approximately 70 parents per day. In the last financial year FOCHA and

MUSTADAFIN served on average about 27 000 meals.

Supper:

The need to serve support to families who sleep next to their sick children

increased. FOCHA approached organizations, churches and individuals to

provide evening meals. This was so successful, that we could feed over

8000 parents.

Our Volunteers

The Volunteers form the cornerstone of FOCHA’s Volunteer Program at

the hospital. FOCHA recruits both local and international volunteers to

become part of the Play Project at the hospital. Volunteers offer their

time and expertise to edu-tain the sick children in the Wards.

Some volunteer activities include reading, playing with children, building

puzzles, Lego, card games, etc.

Smaller patients play with musical instruments, musical toys, dolls,

balls, etc. Volunteers spend between one week and six month in the hos-

pital. The average number of hours volunteers spend in the hospital is

about 60 hours.

Volunteers at Play Our volunteer program continues to be a melting pot of cultures, skills,

knowledge and experience which enhances the healing process of our chil-

dren. Volunteers are active throughout the hospital wards and in the out-

patients’ clinics. These extra hands form part of the healing process of our

patients. In the wards of our world class African hospital, they dedicate

and commit their time and energy to develop sensitivity to their own

needs, our children’s needs and feelings and that of parents and staff.

They are attentive, caring, and open both to what our patients say and to

what our patients cannot say. Volunteering changes lives, the lives of our

volunteers and the lives of our patients. their parents and the staff. They

support the challenges of the health care system, and assists in nurturing

Wouter van Warmelo - our beloved photographer

The Photography Project,

started in September 2009,

continues unabated.

Wouter van Warmelo visits

Red Cross Children’s

Hospital every Friday to

photograph the children

and their parents in all the

in-patient wards, B1 and 2,

ICU, C2 Burns, D1 and 2,

E1 and 2 and G1 Oncology.

During the period of the re-

port 2,430 children (5 018 individual prints) were photographed,

of which some were repeats. These repeats are important mainly

to show the progress of the health of the children, especially

amongst the burns survivors, but also to help the parents to deal

with the trauma. However, when the child passes away, the par-

ents have these photographs to help them cope with the loss.

There is no doubt that this photography project brings a lot of joy

to the families, and this is clear when one sees the eagerness of

the parents in collecting the photographs when Wouter delivers

them to the Friends for distribution. The project would have been

very difficult to conduct if it weren’t for the generosity of the

Aroma Therapy

Aromatherapy is a holistic

healing therapy that has its

roots in the most ancient heal-

ing practices of mankind. It

takes into account the whole

person including the physical

body, the mind and the spirit.

Especially selected aromatic

plants have been used for cen-

turies for medical, culinary,

cosmetic and perfume applica-

tions. Most modern scientific

work is done to find the ‘active’

ingredient or constituent with

trace constituents being re-

moved. However, it is the synergistic effect of all of the components that

provides the full holistic healing potential of essential oils. A few of the

volunteers that have been doing sterling work coming in once a week to

assist with the Aromatherapy programme have unfortunately had to

take a break due to personal circumstances. We therefore need to make

an effort to recruit and train some new volunteers in the coming months.

While we are still making a significant difference to the lives of the chil-

dren in the hospital, our numbers have dwindled over the last few

months and we would like to bring these back up again. However, the

Pain Management Team continues to function well and the number of

patients that are being re-

ferred for Aromatherapy

massage from doctors and

other medical staff is in-

creasing. This is a very en-

couraging trend as more and

more of the medical staff are

recognizing the therapeutic

value of the treatments and

asking for their patients to

be included in the

Aromatherapy programme.

Limo Ride

Once a month, City Slickers Limozines take patients, their par-

ents and a nursing sister on a journey around Cape Town and

Houtbay. This is a wonderful journey for the sick patients who

just need a little break from the pain and suffering. Garreth Reed,

the owner, does it all for FREE . He even provides snacks and soft

drinks or juice. Supporters like Garreth and his driver David

make life so much more pleasant for the hospitalized families.

Mobile Library

The objective of the

mobile Library is to

promote a culture of

reading for hospitalized

children. Reading is the

primary tool to

encourage education

amongst children. This

project seeks to address

this by lending books to

patients and getting volunteers to read to them. Access to

books will improve the literacy levels of our patients.

Reading provides fun, entertainment, it alleviates stress and

anxiety as well as lower the levels of boredom amongst

patients. For patients who have limited mobility this will be a

welcome distraction and a form of escape during their stay in

hospital.

Volunteer Appreciation Celebration

The Annual Volunteer Appreciation Ceremony was held in the Johnson and Johnson

Hall at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital. 120 Volunteers received ros-

es and a Certificate of Appreciation for the years of service they have given to the

hospital.

Both the professional and play volunteers enjoyed the program and the variety of food

that was served. Live music entertained the crowd, and speeches from the

Chairperson and guest speaker was well received.

Volunteers spend thousands of hours at the hospital, making a difference in the lives

of very sick children. They deserve to be appreciated more. This day celebrated the

volunteers and their commitment to the health outcomes of the thousands of patients

they touch daily.

This event was funded by CHATZ CHARITY. Bev Chatz and her team funded the

volunteers certificates, decorated the hall, arranged the catering and paid for all other

expenses. We are extremely grateful to the CHATZ CHARITY TEAM.
