Curriculum Outcomes

The core business of Mundijong Primary School is the achievement of high standards of academic and social learning. Successes at our school are determined by external and internal indicators.

External indicators include student performance on Literacy and Numeracy tests in years 3, 5 & 7 (NAPLAN), performances in Literacy and Numeracy in pre-primary through the On Line Entry data, performances at interschool music and sporting events.

Internal indicators include student performance on SIS reports based on classroom assessment in all learning areas. Classroom assessment is ongoing throughout each semester. Formal reports are sent home at the end of semester one and two. In term three we held a learning journey for students to show parents their many achievements throughout the school term.

How do we know that we are a good school?

• Our external indicators, such as NAPLAN and WAMSE show that we have areas of both strengths and weaknesses and that the school takes steps to overcome these weaknesses. These steps have been effective over time.

• Secondly, our teachers implement Individual Education Programs (IEP’s) in Literacy and Numeracy for those students who are experiencing significant difficulties. These IEP’s are examined by outside agencies such as the Centre for Inclusive Schooling and, where appropriate, the school psychologist. These experts critically analyse our IEP’s making suggestions on ways to improve them. The Principal monitors the implementation of each IEP.

• Thirdly, the school administration has a performance management process in place that assists the teaching staff to focus on specific targets and goals for their students.

• Our parent, student and teacher surveys indicate that our approval rating amongst all three groups is high.

• We acknowledge that there is always room for improvement. We use the results of our parent/teacher/student surveys, P & C and School Council advice, student concerns, individual parent concerns and Department of Education advice to guide improvement.

Teacher Qualifications

All teaching staff have the qualifications to teach in the Western Australian public school system. They are all registered with the Teachers Registration Board (TRB).

Numeracy - Year 3, 5 and 7 compared to ‘like’ schools

Year 7 students have made very good progress in numeracy. Year 3 and 5 students are below ‘like schools’ and will require consistent, explicit teaching in areas of number, particularly problem solving, in 2015. Teachers will use Maths Plus to support their programs.

Student Progress compared to ‘like’ school from 2012 to

2014

This graph indicates the achievement and progress of students in Grammar and Punctuation, Numeracy, Reading, Spelling and Writing from year 3 to 5 and year 5 to 7. High progress and achievement are indicated for year 3 to 5 in Reading, Writing and Grammar and Punctuation. While high progress has been made in writing and spelling lower achievement is indicated. Low progress but higher achievement is indicated for year 5 to 7 students in Grammar and Punctuation, Spelling and Numeracy. High progress and high achievement are indicated for the same group in Reading and Writing. These results indicate that there needs to be greater consistency in whole school planning and teaching so that progress and achievement are high in all areas assessed over two years. In 2015 teachers will work closely with their planning across all year levels and develop consistent teaching practices in each year level by refining pedagogical practices.

Curriculum 2014

The School strategic and operational plan is our guide to the what, how, who and when of delivering relevant, intellectually demanding learning experiences for our students. It provides an explicit set of objectives, targets and obligations that we feel need to be implemented. Our school plans recognise that our students need opportunities to engage in higher order thinking and reflection about learning. It also recognises that there are some basic sets of knowledge and skills our students require in order to facilitate their intellectual and social development. The strategic and operational plans were endorsed by the 2014 School Council.

Literacy

One of our major goals in 2014 was to engage all our students in reading. Our teachers recognise that learning to read and the teaching of reading are complex undertakings and that no single strategy or method guarantees successful student learning or teaching excellence.

All classes engaged in oral presentations, singing, story reading and public speaking tasks.

Reading skills and strategies relevant to individual students and groups were taken into account allowing teachers to cater for students at their stage of development.

The uninterrupted Literacy block was run for 100minutes each day. Soundwaves is used consistently across the year levels, teachers teach to and display phonic and grammar charts and writing genres to assist students in completing written tasks. Explicit teaching of grammar and writing skills using NAPLAN results as evidence

Page 9: Annual Report 2014 - Completedmundijongps.wa.edu.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/... ·  · 2015-06-09ANNUAL REPORTANNUAL REPORTANNUAL REPORT 201420142014 ... Mundijong Primary School

9

about what our children know has allowed teachers to cater for the individual needs of students.

Sound waves was purchased as a resource to support grammar and punctuation, spelling and phonics development. Teachers will continue to use Soundwaves in 2015 making sure that teaching strategies used in the classroom are consistent from K to year 6.

Numeracy

Teachers interrogated NAPLAN results to pin-point group and individual student weaknesses which enabled teachers develop explicit strategies and activities to remedy these areas of weakness.

Mathletics is now a major part of the learning program for our Kindergarten to year 7 students. It is used as an assessment tool by teachers and as a monitoring tool by the admin to track class and individual progress. The students use Mathletics as an individual learning program that enables them to work at their own level, get immediate feedback, and compete against other students from all over the world and as a revision tool.

Math Plus was purchased for all students. This book supports teachers programs and is directly linked to the Australian Curriculum. Consistent and explicit teaching by teachers from K to 6 will be the key to improvement by students.

Science

Throughout the year purchases have been made to build our resources in science so that they link directly to the Australian Curriculum. All staff teach using the Australian Curriculum. Primary Connections is a whole school program used across each year level.

In 2015 we will have Science specialist with the aim of consistent teaching in this area.

The Arts

The Mundijong Choir performed with distinction at the WA Government Schools Music Society (WAGSM) concert in August. Successful participation in WAGSM (is an accurate measure of how well a school arts/music program is operating).

The school has a guitar specialist program. This will continue in 2015 with a year 5 and year 6 group.

The school took part in Dance Sport in 2014. In 2015 students will be involved in Dance Step which will give an eclectic approach to dance and Physical Education.

Physical Education

In 2014 Mundijong Primary School delivered a wide range of Physical Education Programs. Some of the features included

• Years 1 – 7 have fifteen minutes of fitness on the oval every morning before lessons begin.

• We had swimming lessons in term 3 for PP – Yr 7 students.

• We took part in the usual competitions: cross country, athletics and the interschool winter carnival.

• Senior teachers and students continue the Blue-Earth games.

• Early Childhood teachers continued with fundamental movement skills.

Page 10: Annual Report 2014 - Completedmundijongps.wa.edu.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/... ·  · 2015-06-09ANNUAL REPORTANNUAL REPORTANNUAL REPORT 201420142014 ... Mundijong Primary School

10

In 2015 we will employ a Physical Education Specialist who will explicitly teach PE skills and knowledge from K to year 6.

Languages

The year 3 – 7 students took part in Indonesian for one hour per week. Our Languages instructor provides stimulating activities for our students. These have included cooking and food tasting, physical education and music.

History

Staff have been planning using the Australian Curriculum in History. Strong links are made to the local community. Each year level learns about selected Asian countries giving students breadth and depth in Asian studies throughout their schooling at Mundijong Primary School.

There was a Multi -cultural day in 2014 showcasing and celebrating the countries that we have been studying throughout 2014.

The senior students took part in a school camp at Point Perron where they did activities such as orienteering and rock (the wall) climbing.

The whole school ‘celebrated’ ANZAC day and Remembrance Day with a series of stories, films and ceremonies.

Technology & Enterprise

We concentrated on the Teaching the process of design, students creating the product and appraising their work.

T & E has been integrated right across the curriculum – Science, History and use of computers in our core learning areas of Literacy, Numeracy and Science.

Priorities for 2015

The Mundijong Primary School staff understand that learning programs must be continually evaluated and assessed. The staff develop Individual Education Programs for students requiring remediation or extension. These IEP’s are based on teacher judgment, external test results, individual student assessments administered by District Office psychologists where necessary and in consultation with the student and parents.

We know that evidence based assessments enable us to focus on specific weakness, either systemic or individual, in our academic learning programs. We regard NAPLAN and WAMSE external tests as high quality data which with our in- school assessments shape our academic priorities for the coming year.

These priorities include:

Literacy – Reading comprehension, and narrative and persuasive writing.

Spelling – spelling rules and phonics.

Numeracy – Number /Problem solving - the processes needed to complete a problem. Using our mathematic knowledge to solve problems.

The way forward in 2015

Literacy

• Reading - In 2015 teachers will be focusing on explicit teaching in reading. Teachers will continue to have an uninterrupted Literacy block and special emphasis will be placed on guided reading plus comprehension strategies using Stars and Cars as a resource.

• Writing - Explicit teaching of persuasive text and Narratives will continue in all year levels. There will be a focus on paragraphing. Writing will be integrated through all learning areas. Teachers will scaffold writing genre and explicitly teach editing skills.

• Grammar and Punctuation - explicitly teach all grammar and punctuation skills. Teachers will continue to use the whole school Literacy plan which indicates what punctuation and grammar to specifically teach and when.

• Spelling - Sound Waves will be used as a whole school spelling program. Explicit teaching of phonics will occur in K to year 6. Teachers will share practices in teaching Soundwaves making sure that there are common practices across all year levels.

Numeracy

• Focus on the use of the Australian Curriculum.

• Teachers will maintain a Numeracy block where there are no interruptions.

• Drill specific skills before each lesson. Consolidating the basic mathematical skills taught.

• Use Mathletics as part of the classroom instruction for students from Kindergarten to year 7. Encourage students to access Mathletics at home to reinforce mathematics concepts.

• Address specific areas of weakness in number through explicit teaching in all year levels.

• Tackle a problem a week. Teaching students how to use their mathematical knowledge to solve problems.

• Focus on statistics and probability, algebra and measurement consistently. Use First Steps Strategies.

• Teachers to continue to use the whole school Numeracy Plan.

Mundijong Primary School is working closely with our network of school determining where there is a need to improve Literacy and Numeracy and directing resources to

Page 13: Annual Report 2014 - Completedmundijongps.wa.edu.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/... ·  · 2015-06-09ANNUAL REPORTANNUAL REPORTANNUAL REPORT 201420142014 ... Mundijong Primary School

13

those schools. As a network we will also be celebrating those schools that have good achievement in Literacy and Numeracy offering support to those schools that require it.

Science

• We will have a Science Specialist in 2015 teaching from K to year 6.

• Through specific investigations cater for all learning levels and styles. Specialist Teacher to keep science processes and routines the same across all year levels which will allow for a seamless transition from K to year 7.

• Explicitly teach the Science process: planning, conducting, processing and evaluating data.

• Specialist Teacher will use common assessment tasks across all year levels which can then be analysed and discussed at Professional Learning Team Meetings.

• Specialist Teacher to develop a whole school Science Plan using the Australian Curriculum.

History

• Teachers will continue to implement the Australian Curriculum in History.

• Each year level will study a particular Asian country. (Asian studies)

• In 2015 we will have a cultural incursion. (dance/drums)

In Summary

Mundijong is a thriving family friendly, primary school with very hardworking staff, parents and students. While there has been some improvement by students in Literacy and Numeracy during 2014, these areas will continue to be priority areas in 2015 as we work hard to achieve academic excellence.

Continued concentration by staff on consistent whole school approaches to Literacy, Numeracy, Science and History will ensure sustained improvement by all of our students.

In 2015 there will be a focus on improved teacher pedagogy through teacher performance development and classroom observation by peers and teacher’s line manager.

The relationship between home and school will always play a very important part in a child’s education. We can not overestimate the critical role parents play in successful learning. Teachers continue to be responsible for the more formal aspects of children’s learning but successful teaching builds on the home experiences of the child. We therefore continue to work with parents as partners in their children’s education in order that all of our students reach their full potential.
