WELCOME FROM NEW HEAD

Every day I encounter moments that surprise me and strengthen my appreciation for the self-initiative and poise with which MMS children and adolescents carry themselves: the five-year-old Primary students who walk themselves upstairs to request a tutorial from Pamela on how to photocopy the stories they just composed; the flock of elementary children who surround me in the hallway and, with big smiles on their faces, present me with a hand-written description of the composting worm bin for which they’d like permission to raise funds; the Upper Elementary students who make an appointment to meet with me in my office and then pitch to me their idea for an aquaponics system they’d like to build that would produce fish for food and organic waste with which to fertilize a small-scale vegetable production; Junior High students who on their very first day on campus for orientation dive with gusto into the challenge of using a power auger to dig dozens of fence post holes in rocky, dusty, hard soil.

MMS students feel a conspicuous sense of ownership over their education and their school. The beauty too is that this ownership doesn’t include the corresponding off-putting airs of entitlement one might expect: MMS students don’t expect just to be granted everything they ask for. Instead, they come poised to dig in and engage in work, adult-like dialogues, and even setbacks, in order to learn what it takes to move a project from the “great idea” stage all the way through to its successful realization.

Maria Montessori believed that children enter the world with two core desires: to understand the world and to know how to be effective in it. As we enter this next chapter in Marin Montessori’s history we are in the enviable position of knowing that we meet these two deep-rooted yearnings in our students every single day. MMS’s is a robust academic program in which learning is never decontextualized, but rather is interconnected, tangible, active, meaningful, and generative. Our approach leads to the development of the crucial habits of minds and heart that our children need as growing members of the 21st century: they matriculate to high schools as sharp critical thinkers, skillful collaborators, visionary problem solvers, lovers of work and of getting things done, and with a can-do self-confidence that positions them ready to meet what comes and to create the lives they dream to create.

How fortunate I am to be heading this inspired school!

HEAD OF SC HOOL’ S L ETTER 2 014 - 2 015

It seemed that on the heels of Marin Montessori School’s 50th anniversary in 2013-14, that 2014-15 might be a ho-hum kind of year. Actually, that was far from the case. In fact, 2014-15 had the hallmarks of a watershed year, in fundraising and in institutional focus.

Just as 2013-14 was a capstone year, reflecting on Marin Montessori’s deep connec-tion with and commitment to Montessori education, 2014-15 furthered that focus and added the additional and essential spotlight on institutional sustainability.

With classes reaching optimal sizes and facilities reaching their capacity, faculty, administrative staff, and the Board of Trustees began to wrestle with issues of right-sizing, financial projections, and facilities optimization. Building sustainability into a school program is not simply setting boundaries, but it is actually the more subtle work of finding flexible balance. This work is cumulative and takes place over several years, and 2014-15 began it in earnest.

2014-15 was also a year of transition. Two new level directors assumed their posi-tions in the Elementary and Junior High programs respectively, bringing both strong leadership skills and educational expertise to their work. By year’s end their cumu-lative efforts enhanced communication between and among the levels and strength-ened the connection between both campuses. Their work provided essential support for the children, faculty, and families in their care. The school deftly managed a search for a new head of school (an approach and process I deeply appreciated) and engaged a wonderful new head of school for the 2015-16 school year and beyond. The fact that this process was thorough and successfully completed speaks to a strong level of institutional balance and integrity. In a stable school, change, though at times challenging, is an opportunity to grow and thrive.

Financially, the school continues to manage its funds effectively. An overwhelming portion of income goes directly to program, as it should. The school benefitted from a strong Annual Fund this year, and all those involved in making that happen are to be congratulated, and their efforts are deeply appreciated. At the end of the year when the opportunity to obtain the property immediately adjacent to the east of the school became a possibility, a group of donors stepped right up to make that possi-bility a reality. Without their alacrity and their commitment to the school, it would not have happened. Now, an exciting future is on the horizon for that new property. Heartfelt thanks to those who worked in so many ways to make it a reality.

2014-15 brought home to me the essence of school community. Everywhere I turned I saw faculty, administrative staff, parents, and friends of the school doing all they could to support the mission of the school—our unequivocal commitment to the children and their opportunities for life-long learning. With this wide base of under-standing and this willingness to take part, Marin Montessori School has an unshake-able foundation for the future.

As I move ahead to new adventures (don’t call it retirement), I look back fondly on my time at MMS. Everyone, from the children to the Transportation Department and everybody in between, helped make my experience enjoyable, challenging, and pro-ductive. I wish all the best to all of you at MMS in 2015-16 and in the years ahead.

Sincerely,

Jim MungerMarin Montessori Head of School 2011-2015

BOARD OF T R U ST EES P RES IDENT ’ S L ETTER 2014-2015

The 2014-15 school year saw a great deal of exciting activity at MMS. First and foremost, as in every year our 260+ students continued their personal development on all fronts under the guidance of our talented faculty, supported by our first-rate administration team.

In preparation for the planned retirement of previous Head of School Jim Munger, in January 2015 MMS hired Sam Shapiro, formerly at the Athenian School in Danville, as our Head of School. It was striking how strongly Sam connected with every part of our community during the search process, as his intellect, innate curiosity, and commitment to child-centered learning resonated with the core beliefs at Marin Montessori School. Having worked closely with Sam since he started full time in July, I am supremely confident that he will prove to be an outstanding head and will lead us with purpose, grace, and efficacy for many years to come.

Adding unanticipated activity to an already busy year, an initial outreach in late 2014 to the owners of the property adjacent our Corte Madera campus led to a rapidly developing process which culminated in our acquisition of that property in May 2015. Comprising a finely landscaped lot of nearly an acre, a superb house, a large garage with attached studio apartment, and a functional dock, the property is a valuable and useful addition to our campus.

As enrollment has grown in recent years we have converted our gathering space to a classroom, seen increasingly intensive use of our outdoor areas, and experienced additional demands on space for after-school activities and meetings. 5164 Paradise will help address all of these needs. To determine the most impactful use, we have engaged highly regarded architectural firm Pfau Associates to develop a utilization plan with input from across the MMS community. Completion of this plan, a capital campaign, and any required construction will all occur over the next two years, with use of the new property to commence in fall 2017 once a transitory lease to the pre-vious owners has run its course.

It is truly an exciting time at Marin Montessori School.

Best regards,

Glenn HopkinsPresident, Board of Trustees

PARENTS ’ ASSOCIAT ION PRES IDENT ’S LETTER 2014-2015

The overarching goal every year of the Marin Montessori School Parents’ Association is to build and support community among parents outside of the classroom environment. The Parents’ Association activities and initiatives help to enrich a family’s experience at MMS and deepen their personal investment in the school.

The wonderful team of parents who led this charge—the Parents’ Association Executive Committee—is comprised of parent volunteers who truly lead by example. Alima Connan, Caitlin Crain, Cary Gasner, Michelle Goodman, Anne Marie Haddock, Jennifer Raby, Sommer Schafer-AuYeung, and Courtney Smith—thank you for your leadership, your enthusiasm, and your remarkable commitment to Marin Montessori School and its values of grace and courtesy. Through your active volunteerism and contributions, you have helped to provide the best possible environment for each family within the MMS community.

I was honored to serve with this exemplary team of volunteers working to fulfill our mission and having fun while doing it. This past year brought many moments for parents to gather. Social events filled the calendar as we celebrated back to school with a Fall Family Picnic that offered the chance to display our school spirit by shop-ping for MMS spirit wear, signing up for volunteer opportunities, and picnicking and playing with friends at our beautiful Corte Madera campus. Parents also enjoyed a Parents’ Night Out with our local partner, Book Passage. At the event, parents could be found socializing while shopping for teacher-selected book baskets to supple-ment the classroom libraries. Friday park play dates were offered and well attended each month, and our beloved annual Family Movie Night took place once again under the stars. Good works and community service also dominated the calendar. California Coastal Cleanup Day, a Holiday Coffee promoting a book drive benefitting the Marin Community Clinics, and the 15th annual “Fling on the Ring” Ring Mountain Cleanup were just a few of the community-minded events in which families partici-pated. The tradition of monthly lunches hosted by the classrooms for faculty and staff—delicious food cooked and offered by parents—remained our most treasured endeavor. The year was occupied, most important, with programming and many occasions for parents to become acquainted with candidates as we conducted the search for our future Head of School. Finally, we celebrated the retirement of our dedicated leader, Jim Munger, whose service and experience greatly benefitted the school during his tenure.

While Marin Montessori School’s curriculum and education focuses on the whole child, the Parents’ Association strives to focus on the whole parent experience that will offer a balanced school environment and create a sense of unity for parents and children alike.

On behalf of the Parents’ Association, I want to thank all of the dedicated parent volunteers who participate and help to serve Marin Montessori School. We are lucky to have you and your wonderful families as part of this community. And thank you to the faculty and staff for giving us, the parents, these remarkable opportunities to contribute to the health and happiness of our children and to create the best possi-ble experience for us all.

With appreciation and gratitude,

Dorlon SimondsPresident, MMS Parents’ Association
