  • Rotary Club of Beaumaris 2013 2014 Annual Report Page Three

How do you determine whether a year has been success-ful?

Is it based on the club achieving all the goals and objec-tives set at the beginning of the year?

Is it based on the number of activities, events, fundrais-ers, guest speakers and fellowship nights or ensuring membership is increased and members retained?

Or is it simply to ensure that the key elements that make Beaumaris so strong; fun, energetic, and vibrant are maintained whilst at the same time ensuring that the rea-sons for being a Rotary Club are met?

In a year designated as a Year of Change did RCOB change? I sincerely hope not. There may have been cosmetic changes such as the Logo and the way Grants are distributed but why change a successful formula. This does not mean however, that we become compla-cent and not recognise that the current membership is ageing and that we do need to identify ways of attracting younger members to ensure the long term survival of Beaumaris.

The challenge to find future Beaumaris Rotarians in a primarily residential area means we need to continue to increase our presence in the local community. This has been achieved by our involvement with the Concourse Classic Car Show and the Concourse Festival. Chris DArcy and Kerrie Geard have both cemented a relation-ship with the people behind these events, Trevor All-wright and The Concourse Traders Association. Both of these events should continue to grow and improve our exposure in Beaumaris.

The Club was also involved with the Beaumaris North Primary School Fete and again this schools Fathers Group from which RCOB was sporned should be an ex-cellent source of future Rotarians.

When you add the Sandybeach and Cheltenham Com-munity Centres and other schools including Beaumaris Primary and Mentone Girls as well as the Beaumaris Life Saving Club, the new Oak Street Sports Club and work-ing with Beaumaris Bendigo Bank we should be able to maximise our opportunities for Community involvement and potential members.

The theme for 2013-14 was Engage Rotary, Change Lives and this year, if raising a lot of money and donating to a large number of local and international projects is the critical factor, we certainly have changed a lot of lives.

For most of the year Susan De Bolfo looked after Fund-raising and kicked the year off with the Amazing Jona-than Night which when added to our involvement, through Huntingdale Rotary , with the World Cup and Masters Golf, our own Bayside Mayoral Golf Day, sausage siz-zles, theatre nights, donations, grant and other fundrais-ers we raised nearly $77,000.

The Directors reports following will detail our involvement with the various groups and causes and support dona-tions to the Rotary Foundation and others, numerous

Community , International and Youth programs which to-talled nearly $84,000.

Congratulations to Board members Adrian and Chris for an excellent year of Commu-nity projects, Susan and Adri-an for all your fundraising efforts, Fred Hofmann and your team for the continuity of the Sabu project, Cambodian Children, Tibetan Village and all the other International projects, Rob Fenton for looking after Youth Service, Martin Fothergill Foundation , and Trish Smyth Member-ship and Marketing.

During the year we sponsored and mentored Rebeccah Bartlett as an applicant for one of Rotarys Ambassadorial Scholarships. We were all delighted when we heard that she had been successful. Rebeccah will attend one of six Rotary world wide Peace Centres; the Duke-UNC Ro-tary Center for International Studies in peace and conflict resolution. There she will study at the Department of Ma-ternal and Child Health, University of North Carolina.

Sadly we lost Ruth Wolfe who died during the year. Ruth, the wife of Member Harry, will be sadly missed.

It is also important to recognise the tireless work of Sec-retary Roy Seager, Treasurer Malcolm Sawle and Presi-dent Elect, and Club Service Director Ken Mirams. Ken took on the role of Attendance as well as the other duties involved and maintained our relationship with Victoria Golf Club and John Manks who arranged all of the details pertaining to the conference in Bendigo.

The Club Service team of David Lea, Communications, Greg Every, Program and Photographer, David Hone, Sergeant, Judi Hall, Fellowship, John Beaty Photogra-pher, Antony Nixon Almoner and Tony Phillips Auditor have all contributed to the numerous tasks associated with running a busy club. Thank you all.

Finally I would like to thank all members and partners for your involvement with all our projects and fundraisers undertaken during the year and for your ongoing support and attendance at meetings, fellowship nights and con-ference and my wife Susan who has been of great assis-tance during the year.

It has been an honour and privilege to be the 29th Presi-dent of this dynamic and vital club, a role which I have thoroughly enjoyed and which also provided the oppor-tunity to finally use some of those dreadful jokes collected over the years.

OPERATING (GENERAL) ACCOUNT This account is used for the administration of the Club, and is separate from all fundraising and pro-ject activities. Its primary income is Members Dues and net raffle proceeds (after paying for Club Guests etc.) and it pays for Dues to District, Rotary Downunder and Rotary International plus the gen-eral running costs of the Club. This year we were able to hold Members dues at $320 pa, payable annually in July. FUNDRAISING (PROJECT) ACCOUNT The Clubs fundraising activities and annual giving are maintained in this account. It also receives a payment from the Golf account representing the Clubs share of the net proceeds of the Annual Charity Golf day.

GENERAL COMMENTS The year-end figures above are based on unaudit-ed accounts to end May, plus an estimate for June.

The Board receives monthly Balance Sheet, Trans-action Report and YTD Profit &Loss and budget/actual financial summaries.

All figures are subject to audit (E&OE).

    Highlights for the year were:

Fund-raising activities and donations (from both members and outside parties) for club projects were significantly higher than previous years, with a gross inflow to the project account of nearly $77,000.

Commensurate with the high level of receipts, sup-port for community, international, club and RI pro-jects plus other donations totalled in excess of $84,000. See Page 22 of this report for a list of or-ganisations supported.

The club was the recipient of a District Grant of $2,000, which went towards the construction of a Reflection Garden at Sandringham Hospital.

We are currently working on a re-vised version of our Club Constitu-tion and Bylaws following the re-cent Council on Legislation meet-ing when a number of changes were made to the overall Rotary rules. Adoption of the new rules at our Club will take place within the next couple of months once the necessary amendments are agreed to comply with Victorian law.

It has been a very good year so far as attendance at meetings/functions/events is concerned with involve-ment levels consistently in the eighty percent range and one meeting when we had over 97% of all availa-ble members in attendance.

All our databases are up to date and preparation for the ensuing year is well ahead of schedule.

    MEMBERSHIP AND MARKETING

Committee Membership comprises: Trish Smyth, Peter Flude, and Richard Jones. Peter and Richard have been supportive and wise committee mem-bers, thank you.

Our Membership Goal for 2013/14 was 50 members by 30/6/2014, currently we are at 45. At the start of the year we had 47 members, and five Honorary Members. We retain the five Honorary Members.

Two new members have joined the club, John Sime and Susan Hayden. John was previously a member of another Rotary Club; both John and Sue joined us via a personal invitation from an existing member. We welcome them both.

We thank the three members who have left active membership of the Club this year for their contribution to Rotary. They are: Harry Roberts, Zillay Batool and John Van Dyke. The major reasons for resignation were changes to work circumstances and family com-mitments.

Sadly we also lost Rotarian Glenda Laughton who died soon after her retirement, we think of her with fond memories.

This years membership attrition of 8.5 % is at the high end of the usual 5% to 10% attrition rate, so the

importance of our initiatives to retain and recruit members is highlighted. With many members we can fulfil more of our service goals, and provide the expe-rience and broad interest range to keep us a strong vibrant club.

This year as part of the Rotary Internationals focus on membership we too have focussed on member-ship. We held a Membership Forum in December 2013 which resulted in us compiling a list of potential members. We have not fully worked through this list however, as the strong focus on membership by our members has resulted in at least 13 people attending the club as a prospective member. This has required a lot of effort to ensure that each person attending feels welcomed, valued and informed.

This focus on membership has shown the effort which is required to attract and retain members of the club, considering the many other demands and options competing for the communitys time. Several mem-bers have attended three events related to Member-ship Development this year; this has provided useful ideas and much food for thought. I anticipate that the attention we have paid to membership this year will pay off in forthcoming years.

Marketing initiatives also form part of long term mem-bership recruitment, and these have included, new banners, some publicity in local papers and in Coffee News, Golden Days Radio Announcements and pres-ence at Community Events. Community events are a particularly important way to keep us visible.

Members partners and families are an important part of Rotary, their support and encouragement is a vital part of the membership commitment, the board thanks them for their continuing support of the Rotary Club of Beaumaris.

  • Rotary Club of Beaumaris 2013 2014 Annual Report Page Six

Following the strategic objective of continuing to raise our profile within the community, the club has supported a number of Bayside events and organi-sations during the year.

We were delighted to continue our links with the Beaumaris Life Saving Club and this year donated $1,670 for the purchase of 12 surfboards. President Elect Ken presented them with the clubs cheque at the BLSC Nippers presentation night.

The Day on Oak Street event in February gave us the opportunity to support the launch of the Beau-maris Sports Club. Members staffed two BBQ units assisting the Beaumaris Football Club members raise funds for this new venture. We also took the opportunity to take a stand at the event and sell some jewellery made and sourced by Rotary club members and partners. This is a major local event that helps connect the club with our local communi-ty.

In addition to providing funding for the construction of a Gazebo in Sandringham Hospitals reflection garden, club members also provided the labour to paint the completed structure. The garden is now a significant feature at the front of the hospital and is being well used. We now plan to fund the upgrade of the hospitals birthing area waiting room in 2014 / 15. This is an exciting project in that it supports the hospitals strategic direction in their 50th year and two other Bayside based Rotary clubs have indicat-ed that they would like to be involved, increasing the potential funding. This will certainly help Rotarys local profile.

Close by, the club arranged and funded a garden renovation at the Fairways Aged Care Hostel. ANZ volunteer staff provided the labour which included painting, pruning, planting and the shovelling of 2 tonnes of mulch.

As part of the clubs developing relationship with Cheltenham Community Centre we donated $1500 towards the provision of rides and activities for their Kids Expo, a very successful day with about 350 children attending. We also provided some assis-tance with their childrens holiday program.

Fourteen members of the club volunteered to assist Beaumaris North Primary School with the running of their fete at the end of March. Five members helped marshal the fun run, six members assisted with the management of the silent auction and six members plus Pat Seager, Louise Sawle, Penny Culshaw and Heather DArcy sold jewellery from our stall, making over $650 on the day.

Continuing our community involvement, the club made a donation towards the purchase of a new mini bus for Sandybeach Community Cooperative (Sandybeach Centre). The mini bus will be used to transport elderly and disabled clients to educational and social programs. President Robert also took the opportunity to attend Sandybeachs AGM.

    COMMUNITY

Particularly important in helping to raise the clubs profile has been the involvement in events based at the Beaumaris Concourse. Members helped with the management and organisation of the Concourse Car Rally and the Concourse Christmas Fair. Tre-vor Allwright kindly donated the proceeds from the car rally to our Sandringham Hospital project. Ker-rie Geards management of the Concourse Christ-mas Fair ensured a very successful event; the club will continue to support both these events.

Mental Health again featured in our community ef-forts this year. With the help of a council grant of $3,000 the club ran a Mental Health First Aid work-shop in July. The workshop attracted 23 partici-pants, with community groups benefiting from the training. The event was made possible by a lot of hard work by Malcolm Sawle and Martin Fothergill. Members also assisted with the Mental Health Awareness Walk event at Black Rock in October attended by some 250 people.

The Dogs Breakfast and Garage Trail events pro-vided an opportunity to assist Bayside Council and show off club members cooking skills. Both events involved providing BBQ breakfasts with the Dogs Breakfast in February taking place at Ricketts Point Marine Park, to promote awareness of the marine park to dog walkers and educate them to keep dogs away from wildlife and avoid damage to the marine environment. The council recognised our assis-tance by making a small donation to the club.

The Community team is looking forward to a busy and rewarding 2014 / 2015.

The main activity of this Rotary year has been anoth-er visit to Sabu Island. In late October 2013, PP John Manks, PE Ken Mirams, Geoff Stockdale and Fred Hofmann travelled to Sabu. As on previous occasion we met with our friends from the Balicamp at Bali pri-or to the flight to Kupang/West Timor. The Balicamp people are also supporting Pastor Franz and they are very helpful to us when we have to send goods to Sa-bu.

At Kupang we had various meetings with members of the local Rotary Club and with Sabu Students who are studying at Kupang Universities.

On Sabu we inspected projects in progress, had daily meetings with Pastor Franz, travelled around the Is-land to check the new Teacher houses sponsored by our Club.

It has been a great experience to see the happy fami-lies who now have their own home with several rooms, a Kitchen and a Water Well. The houses are of good quality with tiled floors and walls made of Concrete and woven Bamboo for aeration.

Pastor Franz is extremely thankful for the funds he receives from us for the Student Support Program.

A list of new requirements has been established and agreed with Pastor Franz which will be the guideline for future projects

Our Club enjoys a very good relationship with the Ro-tary Club of Brighton North who are supporting us with regular donations for our activities on Sabu as well for the Student Support Program.

Besides the ongoing support to our major overseas project we are donating funds over the next few years to

    -Australian Cambodian Children's Taskforce

    -Tibetan Village Project Australia

    - Possible Dreams International - Swaziland.

In addition we have given donations to Disaster Aid Australia, Interplast, End Polio Now, Indian Flood re-lief, Philippines Typhoon Relief, ROMAC, Solomon Islands Flood Relief, Tonga Cyclone Relief and School of St Jude Tanzania.

I would like to thank all members of our Club who have helped to collect money over the past 12 months through Fundraising activities without these efforts the International Services have no possibilities of assisting our friends in need in overseas countries.

Furthermore I like to thank all the members of my Team who have given their time to make my job in the last three years easier.

We started our year with a change of name from New Generations to Youth Services, but not a change of emphasis. Our Club has always seen the benefits from supporting the many programmes that Rotary offers to the youth in our community, and we contin-ued to support them in 2013 / 2014.

Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) is a 6-day Leadership programme held in July each year for old-er community-minded youth. In July 2013 our Club sponsored Sallie Geary to attend the course as a leader, and members will recall the wonderful talk she gave to one of our meetings on her experiences at various Rotary programmes. This year we have agreed to sponsor Stephanie Corkell, a local girl who is looking to develop her leadership skills and who has attended Camp Awakenings as both a participant and leader. We will have Stephanie come along to a meeting after RYLA, as soon as we can fit her in.

National Youth Science Forum (NYSF) is a two-week programme held each year at ANU in Canberra to give science-minded students a strong taste of the benefits of a tertiary science course and career. We sponsored Damien Winch to attend the course in Jan-uary 2014, and we have recently agreed to support Jessie Gwillims application for NYSF in 2015. Jessie will shortly be interviewed by District for this, but she is a strong applicant and we wish her well.

Camp Awakenings is a leadership programme held in Mt Eliza each year for Year 9 students, and we agreed to meet the costs of 2 students for this excel-lent course. The students are sourced by the Camp Awakenings team.

MUNA is another Rotary programme our Club has always been very keen to support. We hoped that Mentone Grammar would provide a team, but they were not able to. We therefore decided to support

Districts costs with the programme this year.

The District also held a Youth Services Cluster Meet-ing at the Buckingham Motel on 11 February 2014, where a number of our members heard first hand sto-ries of the wonderful experiences that many partici-pants have had in the various Rotary Programmes. Sallie Geary was one who spoke and her infectious talk and personality percolated through the room as she spoke of the support she has received from Beaumaris.

These programmes will continue in 2015 and we will continue to support them as we can. I look forward to carrying on with the team to help our youth fulfil their potential.

The District 9810 Bendigo 2014 conference was a great success. A total of 45 members and partners from the Rotary Club of Beaumaris attended, which is a record conference attendance for our club.

There was a lot happening the golf day, a wine tour and lunch, inspirational and entertaining speak-ers, a dress up dinner dance on the Saturday night, and overall a lot of fun and fellowship. All members attending were fortunate to be able to stay at nearby Crystal Inn with friendly and helpful hosts Jill and Trevor. It was an excellent setup where we were able to enjoy evening drinks and snacks on the ter-race by the pool prior to heading off to the evening sessions

The golfing prowess of some of our members was on display for the golf tournament at Bendigo golf course on Thursday when Tony Phillips and Roger Frewen were the winners on a count back from fel-low RCOB member David Hone and his partner Di. This means Beaumaris will be responsible for the golf tournament at the next conference.

Before the conference got underway on Friday, we all headed off on a wine tour in a very old bus (well looked after and in fine working order) driven by a very capable 82 year old gentleman. We visited three excellent local wineries - Balgownie Estate, Sandhurst Ridge and Mandurang Valley, where we enjoyed a well earned lunch after the exhausting effort of having to taste so many fine wines! Special thanks go to Shane Colbert, our wine tour organizer. Shane is a Bendigo local renowned for his knowledge of Bendigo wineries and wines.

The conference organizers engaged many out-standing keynote speakers, such as Gemma Sisia who spoke about her incredible journey in starting the School of St Jude in Tanzania, going from 3 stu

dents to 1600 in 12 years. Another standout speak-er was Mark Squirrell, a former elite SAS unit sol-

dier, whose adventures took him to East Timor during the 1999 independ-ence crisis and to the Middle East where he met up with Yassar Arafat. To raise awareness for world poverty, he successfully climbed the summit of Mt Everest.

The final keynote speaker was a so-called Italian Sports Psychologist to the Stars, Dr Tony Valenti, who actually turned out to be a Corporate Imposter / Comedian named Homer Papantonio!

Saturday night was the conference dinner dance, where all conference participants had an opportunity to dress to impress. The theme was a Touch of Gold, and it was a sight to behold when all 45 RCOB members and partners, dressed in black with gold hat and many gold accessories, walked in con-voy 600 metres from the Crystal Inn to the All Sea-sons function centre, much to the delight of the lo-cals. A great evening was had by all the only complaint being the dance floor wasnt big enough!

DG Merv Ericson and Kay along with Will and Sue Cornelissen and their team are to be congratulated for organizing a very successful conference, with a total of approximately 550 attendees.

Everybody is now very much looking forward to the 2015 conference, which is to be held at Ballarat on 13th to 15th March.

larly well, and complimented with a

    range of other activities bringing

    fundraising income to over $44,000.

Golf parking had the advantage of two events occur-

Apart from all the projects Beaumaris Rotary runs, behind the scenes there is an important and signifi-cant amount of time spent running the club. This year we saw another year of interesting speakers, fellow-ship activities, golf days and engagement of partners.

Greg Every ensured we covered a wide range of speakers. We heard the following speak: Rotarians, Politicians, Charities, Radio presenters, Foundations, Local community groups, Experts in various fields and many more. All of these helped us understand more fully about the needs and activities that are key for our Club, and improve our knowledge as Rotarians.

Our Sergeant, David Hone took the brave step of giv-ing us a homework topic each week, then one lucky member who studied hard??, came away with the Gold Heart award. Along with this we contributed through fines, happy dollars and a quiz to the gold coin collection for the year.

Fellowship under the guidance of Judi Hall saw us attend and enjoy, golf days & meals. The ever popu-lar Beaumaris Theatre, Meals at local restaurants. Beaumaris as usual displayed the participation we are known for with the normal, fun, drinking, socialising and having a good time no matter what the event.

David Lea again ensured the Club members were connected and informed through the weekly bulletin, our website and a new addition of a Facebook page.

The following members ensured the following roles and needs were satisfied. Tony Phillips: Auditor, An-tony Nixon: Almoner, John Beaty, Greg Every and David Lea: Photographs, David Greenall: New Vi-sions. Plus our roster of all members covered the needs of Chairperson, Host, Cash Desk and AV to make certain our meetings run smoothly.

Our relationship with Victoria Golf Club, and specifi-cally Bianca Hass is as strong as ever and all visitors to our meetings and members continue to remark on what a great venue we have.

Thank you to all who have helped Club Service and de-livered another excellent year for our Club.
