our MISSION

Global Peace and its efforts around the world

The reach of Global Peace extended to Malaysia in 2008 in conjunction with the Global Peace Festival Malaysia followed by an official registration in 2011. Global Peace in Malaysia exists to address the gaps in our social system through innovative ways to embrace diversity and acts as a catalyst for social cohesion alongside the efforts of the government, private and social sector.

Turning five (5) years old in 2015, Global Peace in Malaysia continues to strive and deliver impact guided by a simple yet powerful vision complemented by series of sustainable action plans.

Our local team focuses on two areas of endeavour: cultivating and nurturing youth leaders and transforming education through perceiving learners as complete individuals.

The Global Peace Foundation is an international non-sectarian, non-partisan, non-profit organisation, which promotes an innovative, values-based approach to peace-building, guided by the vision of one family under God. Global Peace engages and organises a global network of public and private sector partners who develop community, national and regional peace-building models as the foundation for ethical and cohesive societies.

FOREWORD

Salam Sejahtera.

2014 was indeed a fruitful year as we took a leap forward in our peace-building efforts. Our youth community has expanded across neighbouring countries and our family continues to grow. Our next step involves a four-week fellowship programme that aims to raise moral and innovative leaders.

Our on-going efforts in engaging educators has taken a leap as ten secondary schools have signed a memorandum of understanding as demonstration schools, believing in our vision that each child is unique and a good heart is as important as a clever mind.

I am grateful and would like to thank everyone who has been on this journey with us. With your support in the unifying spirit of “One Family under God”, we will get to where we are aspired to be.

Thank you.

It is the year 2015 and we have ended 2014 with many challenges - locally and globally. We are indeed living at an extraordinary crossroad of human history and our collective actions will determine the fate of our shared future. Here in Global Peace, we continue to reflect on how we can establish a lasting global peace for generation to come.

The biggest challenge we face is the lack of understanding of our common humanity - of what binds us together and our superficial identities (race, religion, nationalities and etcetera) should not stop us from coexisting peacefully.

Understanding this notion empowers us to cultivate our next generation with character, virtues and shared values that will make them moral and innovative leaders.

As Nelson Mandela once said: “It always seems impossible until it is done.” Let us make this seemingly impossible dream of One Family under God a reality.

NURTURING YOUTH

The Global Peace Volunteers programme (GPV) is a regional leadership development initiative for developing leaders. The programme aims to inculcate a culture of selflessness, nurture shared virtues and active community service amongst youth through a series of activities which engages them as a wholesome being - physically, mentally and spiritually.

The programme recruits aspiring youth advocates age between eighteen (18) to twenty-five (25) on a three days two nights kick starter camp out of the city follow up by series of intellectual discourses and community-based activities.

hear from the GPVians

“I attended the first GPV camp held in early 2011. I was a new student in Malaysia. GPV was my initial exposure to diversity. I thoroughly enjoyed and cherished every moment and wished the camp would never end. We learned quite a lot and personally, I am thankful and lucky to have been able to attend camp as it paved a way for me to figure things out in life and to be grateful for what I have. Diversity has always interested me. The motto of Global Peace - One Family Under God really got to me and it gave me a new

perspective in life and to appreciate the creations of God. I think that is what got to me most and everything else just revolved around it. I expect a lot from myself. I am already a published author of few books and a motivational trainer. But that is not enough. I aspire to be a public intellectual and a voice for the voiceless, to raise awareness about the issues we should all be concerned about like social justice, the environment, religion, women’s rights, public policy and so on.”

“1. Excited. Happy. Nervous. Sad. Touched. Awesome. Tired. Fun. I cried. Would I go through it again? Sure would. #StaminaOnyourHeartandBody I will never forget those stairs! 2. People. People have inspired me. People and strangers. The other volunteers and the people I met during the community service project. Just being with people and sharing our experiences. The camp was a time for me to experience moments with people and connect with people because you never know when you will be inspired to do something big that would change the world. 3. I am currently an undergraduate studying for a Bachelor’s Degree in Broadcasting and Mass communications. Unlike my seniors, I chose to do my internship at Global Peace instead of a production house, television station, or a radio station.

It’s because I aspire to be a scriptwriter and a director that will raise awareness, highlight and educate the public regarding existing issues within our society through feature films. Issues like race, religion and social, economic and environmental issues among the youth need to be addressed.

I realized that I was a part of this global movement to promote peace and change, especially in volunteerism. Since joining Global Peace, as I have never felt like I was a part of or living for something bigger than myself. From my experiences, I have continued to be a part of Global Peace, as a volunteer and involved myself in the events and workshops organised by them because I know that I will continue to receive inspirations to create my very own films in future.”

“My experience during the first GPV Camp was really rewarding! Besides being more enlightened on volunteerism, I had a great time bonding with my fellow camp mates of diverse backgrounds - I’m glad to say that I still keep some of these good friends close to my heart. GPV Camp is a good place to meet like-minded people who walk the talk.

One thing that really stuck with me even after the camp was when we did service learning around Broga Hill. My friends and I encountered a lady and her little food stall, so we decided to help around. In the end, we got much more in return - she served

us her signature dishes (cendol and rojak) and took the time to talk to us. Her kindness is something I keep with me as a reminder to always be humble and go the extra mile.

I aspire to be someone who makes positive impacts on communities - a believer, a changemaker I’d like to call myself. Quite frankly, I’d like to save the world, and I believe that we all can, in our own little ways. In the near future, I’d like to see myself serving ASEAN, serving the United Nations.”

“Being in GPV Camp #4 made me feel like I was one of the lost boys (girl, in my case) in Neverland who would never have to grow up. It was not the activities that made me feel such, but rather the objective of the camp that was pure and optimistic that made me want to be a part of the group. The message carried with the program is to be one family under God, a noble mission by promoting inter-cultural activities among the participants. Despite the fact that we Malaysians are born into such a diverse nation, the irony is that we prefer to remain in our respective groups and missing out on the opportunity to meet our potential best friends, inspiring figures, or our soul mates. GPV camp has broken such barriers and made us embrace our differences rather than merely tolerating each other’s existence.

The highlight of the camp would be the heart-to-heart session taking place in the still of the night where we were led blindfolded to pour our hearts out, exposing our vulnerable side to a shadow casted by the

breaKinG barriers Amalina AriffinInternational Islamic University Malaysia

flickering candle light. It was then, that I learnt, that our physical features would only act as a hindrance for our souls to intertwine should we let that be. As the small flickering flame grew dimmer as the wax melted, I have learnt so much about a person in a mere half hour than I would have in years of friendship. It is those simple yet meaningful activities that left an impact on the participants, an impact entrenched in our hearts.

I also like the fact that it does not end once we waved each other goodbye and went back to our respective homes. We tried to spread the message across in our communities and we meet frequently to support each other. This strengthens the conviction in my heart to be one of the Malaysians to eradicate hate and to promote inter-cultural love for one another in Malaysia as well as abroad. How I will be able to do that, would be another story, but I’m sure I will be able to figure it out with my fellow GPV-ians.”

Multiple flight accidents occurred in 2014. During such difficult times, Global Peace united people and differences were put aside. It is in the darkest hours, humans stand united for the greater good of humanity.

It is through such hard times that the conscience of humanity awakens.

Nelson Mandela is one of the world’s great leaders whom Global Peace strives to emulate. On this special day, more than a hundred youth who claimed themselves as “Mandela” flooded the streets of Kuala Lumpur and The Curve shopping mall to send ripples of positivity.

The short movement inspired many through breaking barriers between strangers, promoting the vision of one human family.

Many are confined to social norms which restrict the capacity to innovate and chase after their dreams. The digital campaign took place as a platform for passionate youth to voice their dreams and seek to inspire youth for change in the name of the greater good has reached more than 10,000 people to date and strives to engage with more youths in the future.

Our workshops are designed to prompt participants to see the bigger picture - and their connection to it - by creating a ‘life map’ to gain a better sense of who they are and where they are going.

Through visual mapping and reflective writing, the workshops acted as a guide for individuals who are still searching and need a helping hand.

Education systems worldwide have over emphasized grade point averages and test scores at the expense of providing meaningful and productive learning experiences. As a result, students that are graduating lack the values and competencies needed to succeed in the twenty first century world.

Global Peace Education centralises its efforts in engaging the the complete child as a unique individual who has the potential to be great.
