DearFriends,

Asweapproachtheyear2015,were�lectbackandseeayearofgreatsigni�icancehaspassed.Thisyearwehaveexpandedourhorizonfromcapacitybuildingtootherinterventionsthatwillcreatedeeper andpositive impact to the rural economy.Our strategy atDrishteeFoundation is not awelfareengagementbutaprogrammetoattainsustainableeconomicgrowthbystrengtheningtheexistingpotential.

Intheruraleconomy,agricultureplaysanimportantrolebutthissectorhasbecomelessattractivefortheruralyouth.Thereforethereisincreaseinruralyouthmigratingtocitiesforbetterlivelihoodopportunities.Thereisastrongneedoftransformingtheagrarianeconomyintoviablebusinessmodelbylinkingagricultureproductiontocommercialusage.ThisyearDrishteeFoundationhaspromotednewventure,“Madhukrishi.”Ruralfamilieswhoarevegetablesgrowers'arelinkedwithurbanfamiliestocreatesharedprosperity.Morethan50famers'clubhasbeenformedbyuswiththesupportofNABARD.Weunderstandtheimportanceofagricultureinruraleconomyandthereforewithourundertakingsweintendtopromoteruralentrepreneurshipinthe�ieldofagriculture.

Year2014-15hasalsofocusedalotonCommunityEngagement.Ithelpsustounderstandtheneedsand aspirations of people. It supports us to segment the people into like-minded groups orentrepreneursandbuildsarelationshipoftrustandithelpsincreatingownershipandstakeofthecommunity inwhatever intervention is required.Programs likeRebuildingLives -Sasaktikaran(Empowerment) supported by Give 2 Asia and Drishtee Samaahit Immersion has given ustremendousopportunitiestoengageandempowercommunitiestoparticipateinrebuildingtheirownsociety.

ThisyearwewerealsooneofthewinnersofEconomicInclusion-EcosystemGrantFundsupportedbyeBayFoundation,GIZandtheGermanMinistryforDevelopment.

WeallareawarethatonequarterofruralIndia'spopulationlivesbelowpovertyline,populationofsuchmagnitudecannotdependonmigrationtocitiesforbetterstandardofliving.Laborabsorptioninurbaneconomyhasbeenvery slow.Consequently, ruralpopulationhas to �inda solution toimprove their quality of life by transforming village economy towards a self-suf�icient andsustainableeconomy.ThisiswhereDrishteecomesin,andwewanttoempowereveryIndianvillagecommunitytotransformtheirlivesforbetterfuture.Wearethankfultoallourpartnerstoshareourmammothresponsibilityandwearecommittedtocontinuouslystrivetoworkforthebettermentofruralcommunitiesandtheirfuture.

Indian economy is undergoing structural transformation from agriculture economy tomanufacturingandservices.Aprimaryreasonthatisevidenthasbeensubstantialdeclineinthenumberofpeopleengagedinagricultureespeciallyruralyouth.Migrationofruralyouthisdrivenbythefactthatthere isnoworkinthe leanagriculturalseasonsandtostriveforbetter livelihoodopportunities.AccordingtothePlanningCommission,eightypercentofIndia'sfarmersaresmallandmarginal,cultivatingonlylessthan2.5acresofland.Ruralpeoplewhomigratetourbanareashave no vocational skill or partial skills. Drishtee Foundation has been working with ruralcommunities fromlast13years. It isevident fromourgrass-rootexperiencethe importanceofvocationalandentrepreneurialskillstoempowertheruralsociety.

Understanding the importance of the skill based training for rural youth, Drishtee FoundationemphasizesonCapacityBuildinginallitsinitiatives.Since2010,MinistryofRuralDevelopmenthassupportedDrishteeFoundationinitsskilldevelopmentinitiatives,predominantlyinConstructionandTextilesectorunderSGSY-SP.

In2012,NationalSkillDevelopmentCorporationalsoprovidedtheirsupportinformofsoftloantotrain 0.75million rural people in sectors like Construction, Textiles, Agriculture, Banking andFinanceservices,Retail,IT&ITESandmanyothers.Ourcoreeffortistocreatejobslocallyandtoinduceentrepreneurshipspiritinthecommunity.TocarrythisforwardandtocreateanimpactinPanIndia,DrishteeFoundationnurturedandpromoted,“DrishteeSkillDevelopmentCentrePrivateLimited (DSDC)” thatdistinctively implementsSkillDevelopment initiatives. It is af�iliatedwithvariousSectorSkillCouncils.

DrishteeFoundationhasalsosignedaMOUwithHullCollege,aleadingVocationaltrainingcollegeinUnitedKingdomtoimprovecurriculumanddeliveryofmasontraining.

Drishtee Foundation partnered with Godrej Agrovet Limited and National Skill DevelopmentCorporationtoprovidecattletraininginvillagesofMathura.DespiteIndiabeingthelargestmilkproducingcountryintheworld,itsshareininternationaldairymarketisnotimpressive.Therearemulti-factorialreasonslikefragmenteddairymarket,traditionalstyleofmilkproductionsandcattlerearingandlimitedgovernmentparticipation.

Milk production is one of the primary sources of livelihood for marginal farmers in MathuraDistricts.SinceDrishteeFoundationisworkinginMathuradistrictover10yearsandunderstandtheplightofsmallmilkproducersinthevillages.Farmersinthisregionfacechallengesintermsofproductivityandpro�itability.Poormilkyield,availabilityoflowstandardofhealthfacilitiesandlackofnutritionmanagementaretheprimaryreasonsofpoorproduction.Calfmortalityandmorbidityrateisquitesigni�icantinthisregion.

Drishtee Foundation trained 5000milk producers in cattlemanagement for better health andproductivity.Theprimaryresponsibilityforcattlehusbandryrestswithwomenofthehousehold.Thereforeourprimarytargetoftheprogramiswomen.Weconductedtrainingin122villagesofMathuradistricts.

Trainingwasdesignedfordurationof2weeks,2hoursperday.ParaVeterinariansarerecruitedastrainers.ThetraineeswerechargednominalfeeofRs100toensure100%attendance.Averagebatchsizeis20.Posttraining,basedonattendanceandassessmentofthecandidate's,programcerti�icatesareissued.Priortothetraining,baselinesurveyoftheeachbatchisconductedandposttrainingend-linesurveyisconductedtoassesstheimpactoftheprogram.

Signi�icantimpactcanbeseenposttraininginthevillages.Forfutureintervention,opportunitiescanbeseeninareasofinput/outputlinkages,creditandinsurancecattlehealthcareandpromotingbalancednutritionpractices.

Objective:Toprovidetrainingtoruralwomenincattlehusbandrybestpracticestoenablethemtoincreasetheirmilkyield.

“Sakhi”isacapacitybuildingprogramforimpartingentrepreneurshiptrainingtowomeninrural

areas.Inconsonancewithourvisionandmission,acapacitybuildingprogramfortrainingrural

womentosetupandmanagetheirownenterpriseef�icientlywasundertakenbyDrishteeduring

2014-15. This programwas supported by Godrej Consumer Products Limited. The aim of the

programwastoempowerandenablewomentosetuptheirownenterpriseorimprovetheoverall

managementandrunningofanexistingenterprise.Ruralwomenwereimpartedtrainingduringthe

periodof8months.Potentialentrepreneurswereimpartedtrainingfor3monthsincludingonthe

jobtraining.Nearly2500womenwereimpartedentrepreneurshiptraining.

Apart fromclassroom training, the focus is largelyon thehandholding support included in the

program. An associationwith Drishtee's Udyami-Sakhi Support Centrewas value added in the

program.ContentpackagingbyDrishtee'sexperienceofsupportingruralentrepreneurshasbeen

puttogetheralongwiththecorebusinesssetupandotherrelatedconcepts,inthemostusableand

practicalway.Also,GCPLhasaddedvaluebysuggestingpracticalretailingandmarketingcontent.

Deliveryofcontentisamixofclassroomtraining,practicalandhandholdingsessions,liveprojects,

sitevisits,etc.

PosttrainingandwithsupportofDrishtee,existingentrepreneursreportedasigni�icantincreasein

footfall which impacted positively on their pro�its. Enthusiastic and new entrepreneurs have

con�identlysetupnewstart-upsintheareaoftextiles,broomstickandincensestick.Womenare

runningthesestarts-upscon�identlyandfeelingeconomicallyindependent.

DrishteeintendstocreatemorewomenentrepreneursinIndiaandwillcontinuetosupportwomen

entrepreneurs,“Udyami”.

Objective: To create women entrepreneur, “Udyami” and to empower and enable women to

engenderenterprisesandgenerateincomeforthemselvesandtheirfamilies.

Womeninruralareasfaceaccessaffordability,awarenessandavailability issues,particularly inareasofBihar,UttarPradeshandotherareasoftheCentralandNorthEasternIndia.Theseissuesarepronounced,coupledwithdeeprootedsocio-economicconditioning,hamperingthedevelopmentofwomen.Toensurethatwomenfromthesemarginalizedcommunitieshaveaccessto,areawareaboutandcanavailservicesandproductsthatarespeci�icallysoldbythewomenandareforthewomen;theconceptofMomoRangoliwasoperationalized.Itmeantthatwomenwouldnolongerhavetodependontheirhusbandstobuysomethingthatisspeci�icallyoftheiruseandwouldnolongerhavetowaitforwhattheywouldliketobuy.AnaimofMomoRangoliwasalsotocountertheawkwardnessandtaboothatwomenfacewhentheyortheirdaughtershadtobuyfromavillageshop,generallyrunbyamale.

The overall aim is to build Rangoli as amodel to empower and inspire otherwomen to seekopportunitiesfordevelopmentandanimprovedstandardofliving.TheWomenShopisnotonlyashopbutaspaceforWomen–wherethey�indhealth,beautyandvibrancy through products, services, training and opportunities. Rangoli provides a stronglivelihoodopportunityfortheshopkeeperandherstaffmembers.

Asofdate,wehave37MomoRangolishopssetupbywomenin40villagescateringtomorethan4000womencustomerswithaproductrangeofmorethan3000products.Eachofthesewomenincreasedtheirhouseholdincomeby30%.Therearemorethan3500productsthataresoldatthesestoresandwomenuseef�icientaccountingaswellasmobileappstoaccountfortheirsales.Innearfuture,weintendtoexpanditto250moreshopsalongwithadditionofmoreproductsandservices

In2013,DrishteeFoundationinitiatedaBPOCenterinMathurawithsupportofNABARD,theaimto

createlivelihoodopportunitiesforeducatedruralyouth.Bene�iciaryofthisprojectareunemployed

educatedyouthsfromthevillagesofMathuradistrict.A30seaterruralBPOwassetupatMathura

withthreeprongedapproach–1.Buildingcapacityofruralyouthtomatchthequalityrequired2.

Setupinfrastructuretoaddressurbancustomers3.ConvincecorporatestotrustruralBPOscapacity

andgivework.

AkeyreasonbehindthesuccessoftheBPOhastodowiththedesignanddeliveryofthetraining

offered.ThetrainingDrishteeoffersisdesignedexpresslykeepinginmindtheskillsandeducational

backgroundthatruralyouthbring,andtheneedsoftheruralmarket.Todeliverontheseactivities,

theoperationisfullyequippedwiththenecessarycommunicationinfrastructure-reliableinternet

connectivity,powerbackup,computerandtelephoneinfrastructure.RuralBPOcurrentlytakesboth

databasedjobsandvoicebasedjobs.

AgricultureisthebackboneofIndianeconomy.Nearlytwothirdofthepopulationisengagedinagriculture.AspertheAgriculturalCensus,agriculturecontributesabout30%towardsNationalIncome.Populationpressure,small&fragmentedland,inadequateirrigation&storagefacilities,depletionofsoilfertilityandnaturalresourcesandinsuf�icientusageofmoderntechnologies&equipmentaresome of themajor challenges faced by agriculture in India. Some of the key challenges can beaddressed by �irstly, disseminating useful information to the farmers especially aboutmoderntechnologies.Secondly,byprovidingfarmersbackwardandforwardlinkagestomakeagriculturetheirsustainablelivelihoodoption.Farmers'ClubcreatesaplatforminruralagriculturallandscapethatoffersintegratedsolutionforthefarmersinIndia.Theobjectiveistocreatefarmers'clubtobuildfarmers'capacity,totransfertechnicalinformationaboutagricultureandtoprovidebackwardandforwardlinkagestoimprovelivelihoodopportunitiesfortheruralsegment.DrishteeFoundationoffershandholding services to these farmers' club in the followingareas:Technologytransfer,CreditCounsellingandMarketLinkages.WiththesupportofNABARD,DrishteeFoundationhascreatedandsupportedaround50farmers'clubs and trained them in areas which have market potential such as Aromatic Plants(Khus,Palmarosa,KasturiBhindietc),ChipsonaPotatoes,Poultry,andSeri-culturein Bihar,AssamandUttarPradesh.

Thepresenturbansystemofeducationhasslowlyalienatedthekidsintheschoolsfromourcultureandvalues.Morepainfully,theeducationalframeworkanditsrelationshipwiththemostlyurban-basedlivelihoodoptionshavedistancedthestudentsfromthelocalculture,trades,skills,art,musicandotherinherentknowledge-base.Andthisresultsinafuturegenerationnotatallreadyforlocallivelihoods and not contributing to local sustainable development The Disha Program, as co-.conceptualizedbyDrishteeandSMBC,isawayofintegratingtheBASICSKILLSofMathematicsandLanguagesinavibrantandengagingmannersothattheyoungstudentshaveastrongcapacitytoreach out to various sources of knowledge. It is an effort to transformeducation by impartingindigenous knowledge&helping childrenbecome independent learnerswith appreciation andincorporationoflocalknowledgesystem.

DISHAprogramoffersadeepconnectwithlocalvaluesandcultureinvariouswaysandalsoinductsthestudentsataveryyoungageonthelocalskillsandtradeslikeAgriculture,handskillsthatoftextile based works, wood-work, pottery, arts and crafts. Local connect and enhancement ofknowledge basewith skill is expected to not only impact the young generation grow asmoreresponsibleandcapablecommunitybutalsothosewhoaremoreproudandself-reliant.

st thYoungstudentsof local schools in the rural andsemi-urbanareasbetween1 standardand5 standardareselectedsincetheyarereceptiveandintheformativeyearsoftheirgrowthwhentheycanbemaximumimpacted.Currentlytheprogramisatpilotstage.TwoschoolsfromNaujheelBlockof Mathura districts have been selected. These schools are catering to lower andmid incomesegmentofthelocalcommunitywithmanyruralandsemi-ruralstudents.Inthe�irstyear,wehaveinducted around500 kidswith some activity based learning experiences designed for randomimplementation.Insecondyearbasedonourlearning,wehavedevelopedasixmonthversionoftheprogramwithmainfocusonthecorevisionofmakinghandskills,culture,self-exploration,mathsandlanguageasbase.4teachershavebeeninducted,45sessionsforeachclasshavebeendesignedand200sessionsforeachschool.

There is lack of awareness campaign conducted by government on the various centrally or statesponsored schemes especially for people living in rural areaswhere there are nomeans to accessinformationongovernmentschemesandhowtoavailthem.87,000croresannuallyspentbyCentralgovernmentonBharatNirman,around8,00,000croresannuallyspentbyCentralandStategovernmenton development schemes. Schemes by government cover areas of education, health, water,infrastructure, livelihood,socialsecurityetc.However,poorstillcouldnotreapthebene�itsoftheseschemes.Attheendofthe�inancialyear,mostfundsremainsunutilizedandgoesbacktoCentralandStategovernments.

AspartofDrishtee's4CApproach(Community,Capacity,CreditandChannel)toprovidecomprehensivesolutiontotheruralcommunitiesforabetterwayoflifeandlivelihoodoptions,itbecamecrucialtoempowerruralpeopleabouttheirrightsandgovernmentschemes.Drishteeidenti�iedvolunteersfromtargetvillagesitselfandnearbyvillageswhoareworkingonthisprojectandarecalled“DrishteeGramMitr(DGM).”DGM isalocalindividualwhoworksin5-10villagesandheistrainedongovernmentschemes. He reaches out to BPL/APL families by going house to house. He understands the familysituationandsuggestsgovernmentschemesaccordingly.Heeducatesthehouseholdabouttheschemesandtrainthemonthefollowup,complainsandRTI.DGMisnotanagent,hedoesnot“doit”forthebene�iciaryanddoesnotpromisebene�its.

Ourvisionistoprovidesupporttomaximumruralcommunitieswhocanavailgovernmentschemesandgetmuchbetterlivelihoodoption.

“RebuildingLivesEmpowerment”supportedbyGive2Asiafocusedonrehabilitationandresettlementofpeoplefrom�loodaffectedareasfromUttarakhand.Though90%ofpeopledidreceivebene�itsfrom�loodschemessinceitiswasacatastrophethereforegovernmentactedfastonitbutpeopleinaffectedareas were not aware of any other schemes that can improve their lives and provide livelihoodopportunities.

CASESTUDYLocation:Kuleth,MushadGaon,BhatwariPanchayat,Uttarkashi,UttarakhandCasestudy:BhatwariPanchayatlostitsonlybridgeduringthe�loodsintributaryofBhagirathiRiverthatconnectedvillagescomingundertheBhatwariPanchayat.Itwastheonlymodetotravelfromplacetoother.DrishteeGramMitradidmanyhouseholdinterviewsintheareaandalsocommunicatedwiththeleadersofthevillages.Withthevillagedatahewasabletomatchtheschemesandeducatedvillagersaboutit.WiththesupportofDrishteeGramMitra,villagersappliedfortheschemeVidhayakNidhi,thevillagers have received fund of Rs 12,00,000 to build the bridge between the village. Currently theconstructionofthebridgehasbeencompletedandthevillagershavenowresumedtheirnormalroutine.

DRAP is a social enterprise owned by rural women producers and supervised by textileprofessionals.Theorganizationenvisionsenablingunderprivilegedwomencommunityandcraftclustersbyprovidingsustainableemploymentopportunitiesintraditionaltextiles.DRAP'smissionistoimpactlivelihoodof5000marginalizedwomenby2020.Incomingyears,DRAPwillbecomeaself-sustainableproducercompanyandglobalbrandname forauthentichandmade fabricsandapparelscateringtomassmarket.In2010-11,Drishteehadtrainedaround5000marginalizedruralwomenofBiharinmanualtextiletechniquesofspinning,weavingandstitchingunderSGSYschemeofGovernmentofIndia.Thecorefocuswastoprovideruralpopulationwithaskill-setforlocalincomegenerationopportunities.Later,itturnedouttobeachallengeashowtolinkthisskilledworkforcetomainstreammarket.InMarch2012,Drishteehelped110womeninBhagalpurandMungerdistrictsofBihartoformaproducercompany.Itwasnamedas“DrishteeRuralApparelProducerOrganization”andbrandedasDRAP.OperationmodelofDRAPcomprisesof'hubandspokes'arrangement.Theintentionistoestablish an internal value chain of hand-spinning, handloom weaving, manual stitching andhandcraftedvalueadditionprocesses.Thisruralmanufacturingisbackedbyateamofdedicatedprofessionalsusingstateoftheartmethodstoreachouttoglobalmarket.Since2012,600womenfromBhagalpurandMunger(Bihar)weretrainedbyDRAPinadvancedmanual stitching, basic spinning and preparatory weaving skills. In three years duration, 360women have become skilled producers and are earning sustainable livelihood. 90 women areengagedinhandspinningofcottonyarns,120womenarehelpingweaverstoproducehandwovenfabricsand105womenareengagedinstitchingapparels.UndertheumbrellaofDRAP,alltheseclustersareinterconnectedaslinksofasystematicvaluechain.AlongwithearninglivelihoodsfromDRAP,womenareestablishingtheiridentityinthecommunityandseekingnewhorizonsofself-reliancewhilemarkingapositiveimpactonoursociety.Withregularpracticeanddedication, thewomenhavebeenable toproducemarketacceptableproductswhicharegettingsoldonleadinge-commerceplatforms.DRAPisbecomingabrandforqualityandpricesensitivemarketandcanbe foundon Jabong, Jabongworld,Flipkart,Amazon,Snapdeal,PayTmandShopclues.

MadhuKrishiisaventureofDrishtee–asocialbusinessdedicatedtodevelopingsustainablelivelihoodsinruralIndia.Marginalfarmerstodayarethemostdisaggregatedworkforcewithlittlesecurityovertheirfutureincome.Thereisalsoacompletedisconnectbetweenthemarket/actualconsumersandthefarmerswhoproducebulkoftheconsumed.Thecentralideaistheaggregatingofruralfarmingfamiliesintocommunitiesandlinkingthemwithurbanfamiliestocreatesharedprosperity.

Asmembers andownersof theFarmerProducerOrganisation (FPO),whichwill beoneof theprimarysupplierstoMadhuKrishi,marginalwomenfarmerswillbene�itinmultipleways.TheFPOwillprovidethefarmerswith:•Betterpricesforproduce(whencomparedtotheirlocalmandi);•Accesstoagriculturaltrainingandinputstoincreasetheiryieldandbettertheirincome;

BackwardandforwardlinkagesFromtheconsumerperspective,MadhuKrishiprovidesitssubscriberswiththeirownkitchengardeninthevillages,fromwheretheyreceivefreshandhealthyvegetables.Ourplatformhasde�inedstagesofengagement,enablingbothfarmerandconsumertoconnectatmanyplanesotherthanjustvegetables.Weenvisagethatthebene�itsoftheconnectionexperiencedwillleadtoasenseofsharedprosperityforboth.Projectaimstoworkwith3,500marginalwomenfarmersand21,500subscribersby31stofMarch2020.

•TodevelopaninteractivewebsiteforurbanwomenconsumerstomeaningfullyconnectwiththemarginalwomenfarmersbyMarch31st2016•Tocreateasustainableplatformforrural-urbanconnectthatwillbreakevenbyMarch2016.

Attheruralend,wehavebegunmobilisingmarginalwomenfarmerstojoinourFPOandwehavebeenregularlyprocuringvegetablesfromonedozenmarginalwomenfarmers.Inthe�irstphase,wehavecreatedaround150activecustomers(urbanusers). WeintendtolaunchourpeerreferralprogramcalledMadhuKrishiChampionsbyNovember2015.Bytheendof2016,weareanticipatingthat70%ofoursubscriberswilleitherhaveregisteredasaMadhuKrishiChampionorwillhavebeenreferredtousbyaMadhuKrishiChampion.
