Dear Friends and Supporters,
In the fall of 1974 a new nonprofit organization called Senior Services of Snohomish County was born. Starting with a handful of employees and volunteers and a $230,000 budget, this new organization served 1,000 people through senior nutrition, information and assistance and a monthly newspaper called The Third Age.
Forty years later with 22 programs, 178 staff, and over 200 volunteers, Senior Services now serves 38,000 people each year. While this number is impressive we have barely seen the tip of the iceberg. By the end of this decade, older adults will represent 24% of the population. Senior Services is preparing for this future – both its rewards and challenges – and is working to ensure the organization’s day to day efforts are aligned with our vision:
By the end of this decade -- through our collective efforts as a community -- older adults, people with disabilities, and those who care for them will have access to all of the resources and services needed to maintain independence, promote healthy aging and live a quality life.
Key to achieving this vision is the phrase “through our collective efforts as a community.” We are well aware that no one organization has the answers or the resources to achieve this worthy vision alone.
This past year, Senior Services recognized one of its long time partners -- Community Transit. Senior Services has managed Community Transit’s DART paratransit service for 25 years. With 54 wheelchair accessible busses operating 6 days a week, DART provides over 187,000 rides annually.
In 2013 a new strategic partnership with the Verdant Health Commission made it possible for us to launch the Center for Healthy Living in Lynnwood. The Center offers information and assistance on Aging and Disability Resources (ADRhelp.org); it supports families coping with the demands of caregiving; it supports healthcare providers seeking resources; and it serves as a multicultural center serving ethnic elders.
In the coming year (and over the next 40!) Senior Services will continue to develop new community collaborations and lines of business. Through our collective efforts – older adults and people with disabilities will see a brighter future in Snohomish County.
