Dear NDA Parents and Family,

The Board of Directors of Notre Dame Academy wants to thank you forthe commitment and support you have shown for NDA. We know thatthere are many educational choices in Los Angeles. You recognize whatwe also recognize – that NDA offers an excellent Catholic and a rigorousacademic education that will develop and sustain your daughters’ moral, academic and leadership potential during their years at NDA and beyond. As like what I saw with my daughter (Class of 2008), I have seen theprogress and growth of your daughters during their years at NDA. Theyare smart, enthusiastic, full of life – in other words, simply incredible, andthey will leave NDA as socially responsible young women who will shapeour world to be a better place.

The Board knows that none of this could be done without you ‐‐ that youare partners with NDA in ensuring the continued success of the school. To that end, the Board has developed a Strategic Plan for the long‐termgrowth of NDA. The Strategic Plan is continually reviewed and is used toaddress the changes and challenges that NDA faces. In response to thosechanges and challenges, the Board also has developed a Master Plan forthe enhanced use of the school’s buildings and grounds. These plans willoptimize your daughter’s educational experience.

The Board also knows that NDA is blessed with an outstanding faculty, staff and administration. Their number one concern is for yourdaughters, and we thank them for what they have done in the past andwhat they are doing now to ensure the future of NDA.

Finally, the Board thanks the Sisters of Notre Dame. Their charism is aspecial gift that started over 150 years ago and continues today to blessthe young women who attend NDA and all those who in any way areconnected to NDA. We will do our best to honor the Sisters of NotreDame and their vision to educate young women to make a difference inthis world and to live Gospel values.

With best wishes to all members of the NDA family,

Lee CotugnoChairman, Board of DirectorsNotre Dame Academy Schoolsof Los Angeles

and Associate Principal

Meredeth Vogler sit down to share

their history at Notre Dame

Academy.

Lilliam: How did you come to NDA,Meredeth?

Meredeth: I always wanted to be aFrench teacher, and when I moved toLos Angeles in 1970 there was anopening at NDA. I remember thefirst day I came to NDA because as Idrove down Selby to my interview, Isaw jacaranda trees in bloom for thefirst time in my life. Their intensepurple was stunning. At school, Imet with Principal Sister MaryMichael Claire and Sister Mary SaintLawrence, who was the languageteacher at the time. What struck meright away was that the two Sisterstruly adored, and were absolutelycommitted to, the young womenhere. They talked about the strongsense of community and thesupportive atmosphere among the

faculty and the students. At that time, almost all of the teachers and staffwere Sisters, but I knew that first day that this would be a wonderfulplace for lay teachers, too. This spring I will watch, with great pride, my45th class of seniors graduate. Lilliam, how did you come to NDA?

Lilliam: I came here as a first grader in 1971 and graduated from 8th

grade in Our Lady of Grace Chapel here on campus. I was so excited tostart my ninth year at the high school because I had heard so many greatthings from all my cousins who came here. I loved every part of highschool life – Notre Dame Day, Junior Ring Ceremony, group projects, theflag team of which I was captain – I cherish every memory. Little did Iknow then that one day I would return as the principal of both schools!

So, if we are doing the math, I add up my wonderful years here as astudent, a parent of two alumnae (Samantha, ’11 and Sophia, ’15) andnow principal and I have enjoyed almost 35 years of Notre Dame life.Between the two of us, we share almost 80 years here at NDA!

I took Spanish and you taught French, Meredeth, so I never had you as ateacher, but I feel lucky to be working with you now and blessed tobenefit from your knowledge and wisdom.

Meredeth: I remember you in the halls, always smiling, helping others, and exuding a spirit of confidence and leadership. I also remember thatthe cars of all the lay teachers and the seniors who drove fit in our facultylot, with room to spare! I drove a yellow VW and so did Soroya Blanco,’77. And believe it or not, the seniors went off campus for lunch. Times

“Always remember your love, untold...”

have certainly changed, but a Notre Dame Woman is still the same — anintelligent, hard‐working, compassionate and talented young woman whobelieves in herself and has the skills to reach for the highest star and beanything she wants to be.

Lilliam: Oh, I remember lunch off campus! The Loyola boys would drivehere and we would all go to lunch. Can you imagine, today, trying to driveon the freeway from Loyola to NDA and back and still have time for lunch?!You are right, Meredeth, the heart of the school is still the same. The line inour Alma Mater, ‘…Always remember your love, untold’ suggests we try tokeep that part a secret, but it is just the opposite. Our alumnae who aremaking a difference in every corner of the globe do it with love, leadership, and compassion. Our bright and talented students contribute to thebetterment of the world every day through our multi‐level service programand their individual commitments. Their passion and dedication to justice, honor, and integrity for all humankind is both inspiring and humbling.

Meredeth: I think our mission and our traditions all speak to oursingular commitment to the philosophy of our spiritual foundress, St.Julie Billiart, who said, “You are not asked to do all the good in the world, just that bit that lies within your power.” It is empowering to know that wehave been true to that mission for over 65 years and I am fortunate tohave seen it in action for 45 years. I know I speak for our entire NDAcommunity when I say that all of us — our families, our faculty and staff, our alumnae and our students — are committed to keeping the Sisters’charism alive for the many generations that will follow us.

Lilliam: I am often asked what has changed and what has stayed thesame. Regardless of the hairstyles, the clothes, the music or the grad year,a Notre Dame Woman is uniquely and remarkably unmistakable. She isour greatest blessing.

I do know that we honor our alumnae by diligentlypushing ourselves and ensuring that our collegepreparatory institution is at the forefront of learning.Preparing our bright and articulate young women to becompetitive and excel in a 21st century environmentdemands that we provide premier educational offeringswith premier educational surroundings, especially inthe areas of critical thinking, science, engineering andmath. I am energized when I think of the loftychallenges and far‐reaching opportunities that lie aheadin our fast‐paced, global society. It is an exhilaratingtime to be an educator.

Meredeth: There is something so uniquely specialabout the Academy … “where true friends greet eachother, guided by dear Notre Dame …” It is an honor tobe a part of its rich history and exciting future.

“...a Notre Dame Woman is uniquely and remarkably unmistakable.”

“Notre Dame Academy made a difference in my life when I needed itmost,” shared Sandra Korn of Charleston, South Carolina. “When I wasexperiencing a very difficult time in my life, I simply could not put themoney together to pay the last couple months of tuition for mydaughter, Heather Kramer. It was a very emotional and financiallydifficult time for my children and me. I did not want to, but I knew I hadto make the call and tell Principal Sister Gina Marie that I would, unfortunately, have to take my daughter out of NDA, a call no parentwants to make.”

Sandra Korn says that she understands what it is like to juggle payingbills with giving your daughters the best education possible. “It brokemy heart to make that call,” she shares. Within days, Sandra receiveda call that changed everything for her and her family. “Sister GinaMarie called me and said, “I have good news for you, Sandra. One ofour very generous donors walked into the school today and handedme a check. He said to use the money in a way that would really makea difference in someone’s life. His kind gesture will be used to pay thelast couple of months of tuition that you owe – send your daughterback to school.”

Sandra still remembers how she felt when she received that call from Sister. “It gave me hope during a reallydifficult time. Can you imagine? My daughter’s life had been turned upside down and there was literally nothingI could do about it. So, to be able to go to my daughter and share with her that the kindness of a complete butgenerous stranger had allowed her to stay at NDA was a blessing from God. To this day, I still feel overwhelmedwith joy and gratefulness when I think back to those difficult days and the difference that kind gesture of givingmade in our lives.”

Sandra visited Notre Dame Academy last spring. She said, “I want you to know that I made a promise to myselfon that day. One day in the future, when I could, I would go back to NDA and tell them my story and I would setup a scholarship fund that would offer financial assistance to a family that suddenly found themselves in direfinancial difficulties. A fund that would give NDA the money it needed to immediately make a real difference insomeone’s life when they need it the most. I want to help families in need just as I had been helped.”

The NDA community is grateful to Sandra for her compassion, benevolence, and abundant generosity. In thespring of 2014, The Sandra Korn Emergency Fund was established. “I welcome others who want to make animmediate impact in a young women’s life to contribute to my annual $20,000.” The fund is overseen by acommittee and is used on a case‐by‐case basis to help other hardworking families who have made thecommitment to provide their daughters with a Notre Dame education but who suddenly find themselves insevere financial difficulties.

Today, Sandra is involved in philanthropic and charitable work in her home town and throughout the southeastregion. She is a woman for others and finds joy in making a difference – big or small – in someone’s life. She saysthat she is keenly aware that “the gift of receiving brings hope and light into a world where there is none.” Thegift of giving back now, she says, is truly life‐changing.

Dear Friends of NDA,

One of our highest goals at NDA is to help each young woman discover thatGod has blessed her with wonderful gifts and that true fulfillment in lifecomes from using those gifts in service to others. It is exciting to see ourwomen grow and develop and then move on to their future endeavorsequipped and ready to make a difference in the world. We are so inspiredwhen we hear the news of our alumnae who are indeed changing the world byusing their gifts well.

We are also blessed to have so many supporters who use their gifts to furtherour mission. Your gifts of time, talent and treasure to Notre Dame Academyenable the ongoing improvement that has contributed so much to our success. We truly could not do it without your support, and we remember you in ourprayers of gratitude to our good God.

I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge the remarkable service of RichardHavel, who served as the chairperson of the Board of Directors for the past sixyears. Rich demonstrated exemplary leadership during a period of significantchange and restructuring for the high school and elementary school. You mayknow that our Board received the Outstanding Board Award of the NationalCatholic Education Association at its national convention in Pittsburgh last year. The Board, under Rich’s dedicated leadership, was honored for its commitmentto the mission and dedication to the long‐term vitality and success of theschools. The NCEA noted in particular the following accomplishments of theBoard over the past six years:

• Overseeing the transition from two separate schools with separate boardsto a new unified model of governance and administration of a TK‐12campus;

• Providing leadership and accountability for the ongoing implementationof the Strategic Plan adopted in June 2010;

• Developing a Master Plan for the campus that addresses the serious needfor additional space and updated facilities necessary to meet the demandsof a high‐quality, twenty‐first century Catholic education.

I, like St. Julie Billiart, am overwhelmed by the goodness of God when I reflecton all our Lord has done for us at NDA. We are so grateful to all of you who, like Richard Havel, have chosen to heed Christ’s call to serve others. Thank youfor the faith you have shown in us and for investing in our mission to educateyoung women to make a difference.

“All the questions at the NDA entrance interview were aboutme,” shares Linda Avalos, ’98 when asked about why she choseNotre Dame Academy. “I felt right at home immediately and alltheir questions were about me, such as what did I like to do inmy spare time, what I liked to do in school and what my bigdreams were. It was clear that NDA was a loving communityand I knew it was the school for me.”

Linda had a great experience at NDA and believes it is herresponsibility to give back to those who helped her along the way.Linda graciously donates on an automatic monthly basis to NDAand has been doing so for years. “My four years in high schoolwent by so quickly,” says Linda. “I am thankful for the life‐longfriends that I made, for my principal Sister Marie Paul, for theamazing teachers that gave me a great education and for theentrusted staff at NDA. In addition, for the rich spiritual journeythat brought me closer to my faith in God.”

“I believe the more money one has, the more one can help others,”explains Linda. “I give back to all who have helped me on my path(individuals, organizations and NDA). I did not come from awealthy family and I struggled financially while going to NDA.However, it was possible for me to attend because of the generosityof others. I am still grateful. Notre Dame Academy gave me theconfidence, the educational opportunity, hope and faith when Ialmost gave up. The NDA community cares. NDA creates thefoundation for young women to believe in themselves and I amthankful. My NDA education was life altering and I hope when Ihave a daughter I live close enough so she, too, can attend NDA.”

Michelle Lampa (fourth from left)shared, “NDA prepared us well forthe challenges that lie ahead at everyphase of our life. The communityexperience and education I receivedat NDA helped me recognize mystrengths and motivated me to makea name for myself in a male‐dominated profession. I very muchenjoyed my time at NDA!”

Erin Birmingham (fourth from right) said, “Academically, philanthropically, spiritually, and emotionally, my fouryears at NDA were far more enriching than my college experience. My classes were more innovative, for examplemy senior year AP English class focused on women’s literature and opened my eyes to works that I would laterteach my own students. My expectations were also higher because what NDA expected of us was entirely devoid ofour looks, finances or peers. Each student at the Academy, I feel, is encouraged to foster her own unique view‐pointand purpose, separate entirely from her appearance and rather tied directly to the value of contributions to oneanother through service and intellectual insight. College did not hold a candle to my high school experience. I amso very grateful that I had the opportunity to attend NDA and I am certain that I would be a much different persontoday without my well‐rounded experience.”
