ANNUALREPORT
2013
Note from our LeADerS
Note from our BoArD of DIreCtorS
We’ve always believed in the power of young people to change the world. And today, one year away from our 20th anniversary, we’re so proud to see how that change is being realized.
From local impacts through We day and We Act to global impacts through Adopt a Village, the faces of change are the young people—at home and in developing communities—who are stepping up as engaged and active citizens. driven by our humble beginnings as a grassroots organization, we’ve seen the groundswell over the years as young people, educators and the corporate community have come together to make Free The Children’s impact a truly global movement.
We day started as a small event in one Canadian city. now, with the dedication of so many young people, educators and a passionate corporate community, We day has grown to 13 stadium-sized events—from Toronto and Vancouver to Seattle and Minnesota and even across the pond to the UK. each We day celebrates change and the part each of us plays in making it happen.
But it doesn’t stop with We day. With your support, Free The Children’s year-long educational programming through We Act is equipping young people to seek out the issues they are passionate about and stand up for what they believe in.
When Free The Children started, we couldn’t have imagined how many passionate youth, educators and supporters would be standing beside us 19 years later. You are leading the charge on a movement that is changing the world, and we’re thrilled to share the milestones of the last year with you.
This year, we were proud to unveil a fresh look and feel in our branding. More than just a change in logo, this new direction celebrates the power of We and its place in our family of organizations as we continue to evolve. This year also saw the global expansion of the We day movement, with debut events in Minnesota, California and the UK that inspired tens of thousands of young leaders to contribute to lasting change. Free The Children’s Year of Water initiative raised funds to provide more than 100,000 people with clean water for life.
Another highlight was the launch of the Year of education, an initiative to build 200 schools in developing communities around the world.
We’ve seen the difference that a school can make. in ecuador, we met Beatrice, a 14-year-old girl who was so committed to her education that she attended school in a cold, dark classroom, crammed with too many students. in that environment, learning was a constant struggle and many of her friends dropped out or didn’t attend at all. Thanks to outstanding supporters like you,
This commitment to shameless idealism also drives Free The Children’s international work. With a family of supporters like you, the holistic development work of Adopt a Village is breaking the cycle of poverty in some of the most impoverished communities around the world. Today, tens of thousands of children sit in classrooms preparing for brighter days ahead instead of toiling in the fields or on the streets to survive; families are healthy, dreaming of future teachers and doctors among their children; and entire communities are digging in to lay foundations that will nurture sustainability and progress for generations to come.
All of these achievements are possible because of your generosity. On behalf of the Board of directors, we are deeply grateful for your unwavering support and commitment to making this world a better place, and we are committed to responsibly honouring the trust that you have placed in us.
Free The Children was able to build a new school in Beatrice’s community, complete with bathrooms and a dining hall.
“The construction here makes a big difference for our community,” she says. “All of this helps us to be happy to come to school.” This school will benefit not only Beatrice and her classmates, but also generations of students to come.
From ecuador to north America to the UK, and everywhere in between, the momentum for change is growing. We’d like to thank you for your part in this movement and invite you to celebrate a year of incredible impacts.
Be the change,

Water allows girls to go to school and women to earn a living. it helps families cook and clean their food safely, reducing illness. it lets communities grow the food they need to flourish, even in times of drought. Adopt a Village plants the seeds of change in communities around the world. You gave them water to grow.
Your fundraisers, coin drives and water walks led to life-changing impacts overseas.
Fifty-seven million children are still denied access to education. it’s time to show our belief that every child has the right to learn and grow. With an education, learners become leaders and gain the tools to lift themselves and their communities out of poverty.
Brick by brick, fundraiser by fundraiser, you are helping us build classrooms for children around the world and lay the foundation for thriving communities.

INTERNATIONAl PROGRAMMING
IT’s NOT CHARITy.
IT’s susTAINAbILITy.We believe that children’s education and holistic community development are the keys to changing lives in our eight Adopt a Village countries—Kenya, India, Nicaragua, Haiti, sierra Leone, Ecuador, ghana and rural China.
INterNAtIoNAL ProgrAmmINg 25
Free The Children began as a school-building organization. Soon we realized that poverty requires multi-faceted solutions, so we started building wells and developing health programs. Soon, children could attend school instead of fetching water or staying home sick.
When children missed school to work for their families’ farms and businesses, we launched food security and alternative income initiatives so communities could stay profitable without child labour. The five pillars of Adopt a Village work together to help communities keep children in school and break the cycle of poverty.
A STOrY OF SUSTAinABiliTY
Adopt a Village is an adaptive, effective five-pillar model built on 19 years of experience working with dedicated communities and development experts to find solutions that last. It began with the goal of providing education, but it became so much more.

Vardi used to spend her days throwing a rope and bucket into an open pit well to draw water for her children, who had nothing to drink while they were at school. The well ran dry in the summer months and was full of harmful pollutants the other half of the year.
Then Free The Children installed a hand pump to make drawing water faster and a metal grate to protect the water from debris. And with a new pipeline and water storage tank near the school, Vardi’s children have a safe, clean source of water to drink year-round.
MeASUrinG The iMPACTS OF CleAn WATer And SAniTATiOnWe help communities install hand pumps, boreholes, wells, pipes, washing stations, rain catchment systems and latrines so every child can enjoy a healthy life. Free The Children and international education activist Malala Yousafzai are teaming up to support girls’ education.
Free The Children is launching a year-long initiative to provide parents with the resources and skills to generate a sustainable source of income and send their children to school.
We can’t wait to see how the We day movement will grow after celebrating our biggest We day season yet in 2012-2013, with inaugural events in Minnesota, the UK and California.
When we treat changing the world as a daily goal, the impact we can make together is incredible. Here are some of the new initiatives we’re planning in the next year.
launching in February, We Bake for Change will raise funds for Free The Children development programs overseas through bake sales with scrumptious treats.
On April 19, 2015, Free The Children will celebrate 20 years of working domestically and internationally to empower youth as agents of change.
The first cohort of Grade 12 students will graduate from Free The Children’s Kisaruni All Girls Secondary School in Kenya.
