Letter from the Executive Director

Anyone who does anything to help a child in his life is a hero– Fred “Mr.” Rogers

I once read, “The children almost broken by the world become the adults most likely to change it.” These are the very children who arrive at our front door. Childhood should be a wonderful, magical and critically important moment. The first few years of life form the foundation for all that follows. Between the ages of 2 and 6, children’s brains and bodies devel-op. They learn enduring lessons about themselves, the world and the people around them. If sound development is missed at the start, life can be forever altered; a life of promise, compromised.

Saint Vincent’s Day Home offers young children the very best Early Learning education and loving care, giving them and their families the opportuni-ty for success. We provide an exceptional program based on a personalized approach to the needs of each child and every family, whom we treasure as our own. Our vision is to make the finest Early Learning education combined with excellent care and sound nutrition in a nurturing, supportive and stimulating environment accessible to the children who most need it. 95% of our children and families live in poverty. Our students include young children who are homeless, drug-exposed, and who have special developmental, behavioral and/or emotional needs. These are the children who benefit most from our programs.

Due to the current economic climate coupled with the ongoing State budget crisis significant cutbacks will continue and inhibit our ability to provide for these children and their families. We simply cannot turn away from families in need. Children’s icon Fred “Mr.” Rogers once said, “Anyone who does anything to help a child in his life is a hero.”

The SVDH “family” includes the Staff, Board, volunteers, donors and supporters and is made up of many wonderful heroes. Together they have come together to confront the challenges we face. These include continuing to provide the highest quality educational and care program, generating funding to bridge the gap created by the cutbacks in state funding and supporting the children and families with innovative learning programs and support services. Our children may come from an environment that could break the strongest in-dividual but our heroes know that we are creating a foundation that enables our students to grow into the adults most likely to change the world.

We will continue to address the challenges confronting us in fiscal year 2013–14 and remain committed to helping families overcome life’s profound challenges by providing nothing less than the very best. We hope you’ll continue to share our vision or inspire you to join us. We can always use a few more heroes.

We would like to recognize a variety of organizations throughout the community that provide learning experiences for our children.

Not only do Saint Vincent’s programs and services have great impact on the children and families we serve, but the community and volunteers have a great impact on the Day Home as well. We are very grateful to the following organizations that provide volunteers who offer support and services to our children and parents.
