A Letter from thePresident

A.M.D.G. Summer 2012

Dear Friends,This summer, the ongoing violence in Chicago has captured the attention of the national news media.

For me, the most jarring incident was the murder of seven-year-old Heaven Sutton. She was shot to death at her lemonade stand in late June while she was only feet from her mother.

Days before Heaven’s murder, my daughter had set up her first lemonade stand in front of our home. She is six years old, and we live less than two miles from where Heaven was killed.

Heaven was murdered where many of our CJA students live. I have come to know the few blocks around her home especially well because one of our alumni, Jerrod, lives there. This past winter, he had asked for extra help getting ready for the ACT. My wife volunteered, and Jerrod and my family soon found ourselves spending parts of our Saturdays or Sundays together.

My less than two-year-old son now yells Jerrod’s name on sight. My daughter tries to impress him with her knowledge of Math. My wife and I are awed by the amount of food a seventeen-year-old boy can consume. Jerrod could have been Heaven. Heaven could have been Jerrod.

What madness is this? How are we called to respond? At Chicago Jesuit Academy, we remain dedicated to being a safe haven for our students and alumni. Our enrollment continues to grow, and we are developing an extensive college-persistence program for our alumni to help them navigate the complicated path to a four-year college degree.

In July, we also began renovating the south wing of our school building. This renovation will double our enrollment capacity and create the critical spaces our students don’t yet have:

• a gym that is safe and warm in the winter; • a cafeteria where they can eat more nutritious meals; • a nurse’s clinic to better provide for the health needs of our students and their families; • additional classrooms so we can grow the number of students we serve each year; and, • more tutoring and counseling rooms for our students and alumni.

Your commitment to our mission has made it possible for us to plan such growth. Please know that we remain grateful for your generosity and your dedication to our students and alumni.

Please continue to walk this journey with us.

In gratitude,

Matthew LynchPresident

P.S. Jerrod earned a 29 on the ACT this spring. He will complete a prestigious American Cancer Society research internship this August before beginning his senior year of high school.

Chicago Jesuit Academy is a full-scholarship, college preparatory, Jesuit, Roman Catholic middle school for young men from modest economic backgrounds. The Academy is distinguished by small classes, an extended academic day and a longer school year to prepare students for success in college prep high schools, universities and positions of community leadership. Chicago Jesuit Academy helps students develop as young men who are open to growth, religious, intellectually competent, loving and committed to doing justice in the service of others, in accord with the Jesuit mission and tradition. The school’s success in its mission is made possible by the disciplined sacrifices of our students, parents, faculty, staff, volunteers and benefactors.

“We all had days when we gave up what we wanted to do because we had school. And, for some, the last four years have had moments of personal pain that made us want to give up. But as the teachers here always say, “What you put in is what you get out.” Since we put in a lot of time working hard, what we get out is a simpler life—a life where we don’t have to worry about getting our bills paid, worry about putting food on the table for our kids, or worry about violence for the sake of violence. We couldn’t be on the road to this simpler life if it wasn’t for you—the benefactors.”

“Sacrifice, that’s the heart of what you’ve done for us. You’ve moved us to safer neighborhoods and fought for places at better schools. You make hard choices for yourself so that we could have a better life. Your sacrifices came in small packages, like helping us with one problem on a homework assignment. They came in big packages too, like sitting in a hospital waiting room while I had heart surgery. We thank you, parents, for your compassion, your strength, your hope, your faith, and most of all, your love. Thank you for helping us fix our mistakes and turning them into opportunities for success. Thank you for trusting us to go off to good high schools, far from home. Thank you for trusting us when you’re gone.”

“To the faculty and staff, I thank you. Why? I thank you because it’s you who helped me to get to this stage tonight. It’s you who helped me unpack and discover the knowledge I bring with me to high school. It’s you who helped me get into great high schools like Loyola Academy and Noble Street. I’m prepared because of you. I’m better because of you, and I’ve grown to understand myself and the world around me because of you.”

Grad-at-Grad Awards

“CJA may not be the same without him, because it’s not every day that you meet a young man who could be called committed to doing justice in the service of others simply by being himself.” - Mr. Kane

“As the demands on him grow next year, the daily habits Sam has given himself will be moving him in the direction of success before he even opens the textbook.” - Mr. Diehl

“This gentleman’s heart is in the right place. How much better would this world be if we embodied this same love? How much better would this country be? How much better would our communities be?” - Ms. Hatch

“Being open to growth does not pay off in the short term, either. Sometimes you have to keep at it. You have to keep working, pounding out that one last line, that one last graph, that one last calculation, that one last reason to support your statements.” - Mr. Houlihan

“Timone’s joyful trust frees him to love. It frees him to love his classmates even when he may not feel like it.” - Mr. Mitchell

Every year students from Chicago Jesuit Academy’s graduating class are recognized for exemplifying the five “graduate at graduation” principles that serve as the foundation for our Jesuit education. This year, the following five students received “Grad-at-Grad” awards.

For Our Benefactors

On June 1st, we celebrated our fourth graduation. Nickolas, Davion and Duane shared these words of gratitude for benefactors, parents, families and teachers. These gentlemen - like all students at Chicago Jesuit Academy - attended CJA on a full scholarship. For more information about supporting a student’s scholarship please see the Scholarship Benefactors page.

*Denotes a Comprehensive Scholarship

The Academy relies entirely on the generosity of others in order to offer a full-scholarship, college prep middle school education to young men who would otherwise not be able to afford it. Please consider becoming a Scholarship Sponsor. For more information, please contact Ms. Catherine Cassidy at 773.638.6123.

Magis Scholarship: Since founding CJA, we have added critical resources to help our students overcome one-time traumas, chronic struggles and other special needs. These resources include a full-time social worker, a school nurse, remedial tutoring, group counseling and basic needs like food and clothing. Magis Benefactors provide a CJA student with these resources by giving $5,000.00 per year for four years.

Core Scholarship: With a gift of $12,500.00 per year for four years, a Core Scholarship Benefactor funds four years of excellent college prep education that allows a young man to attend CJA’s 10.5-hour school days and 11-month school years in order to prepare for the rigors of college prep high schools like Culver, Loyola, Thacher, St. Ignatius and Walter Payton.

Comprehensive Scholarship: With a gift of $17,500.00 per year for four years, a Comprehensive Scholarship Benefactor ensures a student can access all Core and Magis resources at Chicago Jesuit Academy.

Endowed Scholarship: With a gift of $350,000.00, an Endowed Scholarship Benefactor permanently endows a Comprehensive Scholarship.

College Prep High School Acceptances

Alumni Spotlight:Sophomore Alum Receives

College Scholarship!

We are excited to announce that Javier (Class of 2010) is the first CJA alumnus to earn a four-year scholarship to college. Javier, a rising junior at Loyola Academy, was awarded the prestigious Rev. Michael I. English, S.J. scholarship which will not only fund his final two years of study at Loyola Academy, but also four years of study at the college or university of his choice. The scholarship recognizes Javier’s excellent work, leadership in his class and contributions to the broader Loyola Academy community.

“Thank you once again for giving me the chance to become greater.” – Dominic (Class of 2013)

College-Persistence Program

Since 2009, CJA alumni have earned more than $4 million in scholarship funds and financial aid for their four years of study at college prep high schools. These funds have been secured through the generosity of their high schools and scholarship programs including Boys Hope Girls Hope, the Daniel Murphy Scholarship Fund, LINK Unlimited and HFS Scholars.

At Chicago Jesuit Academy, our relationship with our students does not conclude when we graduate our alumni to their respective college prep high schools. Instead, we remain a trusted advocate as they transition from our college prep middle school to their college prep high schools to college and then to their professional lives. This strategy flows from our belief that the first and often greatest obstacle to a college degree for students of modest means is a lack of “social capital” to support college readiness. The path to college can be a perilous journey for the most well-resourced families. If almost no one you know has been through college, it’s all the harder to be aware of the benchmarks you need to hit to stay on pace for college. In order to honor our commitment, we look to connect our alumni to outstanding college readiness programs already in place. We have also created programs like ACT prep classes and our summer jobs program, which provides our alumni with meaningful summer employment and opportunities to receive peer mentoring.

When we founded Chicago Jesuit Academy in 2005, we were committed to creating a safe haven where sudents could grow as gentlemen for others and prepare themselves for the rigors of college prep high schools, college and ultimately positions of community leadership. We are committed to keeping that promise.

Thanks to the generosity of the friends listed to the left, we were able to responsibly begin an ambitious renovation project this summer. This project will create a safer and better resourced campus for our students while also doubling the enrollment capacity of our school.

We have taken this critical first step while being mindful that there is much work still to be done. As the poetry of Robert Frost reminds us, we have miles to go before we sleep.

With a greatly expanded campus, we must make certain that we can use these new spaces well. Thankfully, we are often asked the question, “How can I help?” As we continue our construction work in earnest, we have two pressing answers:

Scholarships for future students Before we can hire more teachers and serve twice as many students, we must secure a scholarship for each additional young man we hope to enroll.

Funding for critical programs Cura personalis – the care for the whole person – is the hallmark of Jesuit education. Our students and families count on CJA to access three healthy meals each day, a nurse’s clinic for health care, music and arts programs and college-persistence support.

If you are interested in supporting our young men in this campaign please contact Ms. Catherine Cassidy, Vice

President of Operations & Development at (773) 638-6123 or by email at [email protected].

Chicago Jesuit Academy As an eighth grader at CJA, a lot of my thinking changed. For example, I stopped questioning authority. Things that were funny in seventh grade weren’t funny anymore. If you stick me inside of a middle school right now, I don’t think I would understand the things they do there (non-academically). What I mean by that is that I wouldn’t fit right with the rest of the kids there because of how much CJA has done to me and done for me. Life lessons weren’t that hard to come by during my time at CJA. “Live life to the fullest”, “Treat others as you want to be treated” and many others were thrown at me without me really knowing what most of them meant. One that really got my attention was the one my mom, Denise Taylor, had given me. “There is a time to play and a time to learn – learn the difference.” As I repeat that in my head over and over, I realize that this is the foundation of my maturity right now. As an eighth grader, I wouldn’t say I reached my greatest potential, nor would I say I was at my greatest

maturity. Still I fooled around in class, made stupid jokes and I heard a lot of kids say, “I’m a kid” but sometimes they used it in the wrong way. The right way

is to use it is when you do things that almost everyone did as a child. The wrong way is when you use it to get out of trouble. I’ve made the foolish mistake of using my childhood as an excuse but now I expect more of myself. As a graduate of CJA, I think about the things I have done and have not done to make this school and myself better. I realize that I have done both good and not so good at this school. I have learned from those “not so good” things because of the great teachers at this school. I plan on carrying those ideas and skills to Loyola Academy where I am attending high school in the fall. The message I would pass on to my younger brother, Jonathan, a CJA fifth grader, and to all the other students after me is to make the most of the opportunity and learn. Learn from your mistakes and make the best of what you have. I only realized it near the end of my short time at CJA. Thank you to all the parents and CJA supporters who have helped me realize my potential and who have encouraged me to keep learning.

Tributes (continued)

When Deon, my older brother and alum of Chicago Jesuit Academy, told me about CJA I was amazed. I was really happy and excited about attending CJA even after learning that it is an all-boys school that dismisses at 6 o’clock at night. What I really expected was an ordinary school that was easy just like the rest of my schools that I attended. In the fall of 2009, when I got to CJA, I was off to a great start with all A’s and B’s on my report card. As the next quarter rolled around, I started to slip. My grades dropped, my attitude was stinky. I wasn’t used to it. I spent a lot of time with Mr. Diehl and Mr. Lynch to help me get better. Once I started talking to them, I finally began to see what this school was really doing for us; they were trying to give us an education – a good one at that. At the end of fifth grade, my grades were okay, but I knew I had room to grow. At the start of sixth grade, my grades were really good. I wasn’t yet at my greatest potential, academic-wise or CJA-wise. As I gained a better understanding of what it meant to be a gentleman for others, I also learned other life lessons. One important lesson I learned in sixth and seventh grade is that things will not always go my way. If I don’t like what we are doing in class, or find myself frustrated with my classmates or my teachers, I just have to make the best of the situation and keep going.

Three brothers, from left, Jonathan (Class of 2015), Sam (Class of 2012), and Deon (Class of 2009).

Jonathan is entering the 6th grade at CJA, Sam will be attending Loyola Academy next year and Deon will be graduating from Gordon Tech in 2013.
