Executive Summary From the Chairperson and the Executive Director
We are pleased to present the 37th Annual Report of the Channel 7 Children’s Research Foundation,
for the year ending 30 June 2013.
Partnerships
The Board is grateful, as always, to Tony Davison, General Manager of Channel 7 Adelaide, for his
support of the Foundation, through Board and Foundation membership and promotion of the
Foundation on Channel 7.
Continuing on the partnerships established over the years, the Foundation was again proud to
support Healthy Development Adelaide (HDA) with its scholarship program in 2013. This ongoing
commitment is of great benefit to the future of research in South Australia. As Executive Director of
the Foundation, Glenn Rappensberg was invited to be a member of the HDA Steering Group in 2013.
The Australian Society for Medical Research (ASMR) presented Medical Research Week in June 2013
and the Foundation was again the major sponsor of the ASMR SA Gala Dinner, with guest speaker Dr
Anna Wirz-Justice, the ASMR Medallist for 2013. Dr Wirz-Justice is Emeritus Professor and Research
Fellow at the Centre for Chronobiology, Psychiatric Hospital of the University of Basel.
Honours
Congratulations are in order for Emeritus Professor Colin Matthews, on being named an Officer (AO)
in the General Division of the Order of Australia in the 2013 Australia Day honours list. This is a well-
deserved award in recognition of his career, “for distinguished service to reproductive medicine,
particularly through the establishment of donor insemination and in vitro fertilisation programs,
through contributions to research and as an academic”. We are indeed fortunate that Colin is Chair
of the Foundation’s Research Committee.
Research Committee
The board extends its gratitude to the Research Committee, ably led by Emeritus Professor Colin
Matthews AO. We thank Associate Professor Peter Baghurst, who completed his term as
Representative of Women's and Children's Health Network and welcome Dr Jenny Fereday.
A total of 20 projects were funded in 2013, bringing the total funding allocated since 1977 to
$20,569,365. (Please see Table 1 and Table 4 for details)
Finance
The financial results for the 2012-13 financial year show a surplus of $850,639, compared to a loss of
$36,927 in the 2011-12 financial year. The surplus result achieved was principally due to higher
financial income of $713,602, compared to the 2011-12 financial year. In particular:
Gains on the sale of investments for the year were $148,013; an increase of $572,981 compared
to 2011-12, when losses of $424,968 were incurred.
The Foundation’s dividend and interest income totalled $1,323,106 for the year, compared to
$1,590,361 in the previous year; a fall of $267,255. Dividend income in 2011-12 included extra
dividends from the BHP off market buy back.
2012-13 – Annual Report of the Channel 7 Children’s Research Foundation Page 6 of 26
Equity markets improved during the financial year from their position at 30 June 2012; however,
there were a number of stocks which did not improve with the market, resulting in an
impairment charge on the Foundation’s investments of $239,755. This is a decrease of $706,534
compared to the impairment charge for the 2011-12 financial year.
Total expenditure for the year was $1,050,428; a decrease of $304,827 on total expenditure for
2011-12. The major expenditure for the year was the payment of research grants of $911,500; a
decrease of $280,301 compared to the previous year. The decrease was due to the timing of the
payment of the 3rd grant instalments of $275,000, which were paid in July 2013 and recorded in the
next financial year.
Total net assets of the Foundation at 30 June 2013 were $31,772,936; an increase of $5,196,642 on
the previous year. The increase is due principally to the increase in value of the Foundation’s
investment portfolio by $5,085,998 at 30 June 2013, compared to 30 June 2012, reflecting the rise of
equity markets during the 2012-13 financial year.
Conclusion
The Foundation has provided substantial support to research in South Australia and the Northern
Territory in the 36 years since its inception, which has resulted in some excellent outcomes, with
researchers having been successful in obtaining NHMRC funding ‘on the back’ of Foundation-
supported projects; young investigators establishing a reputation in their area of speciality; and the
publication and dissemination of research evidence to the wider community.
We extend our appreciation to members of the Board and the Research Committee for their support
of the work of the Foundation.
We are proud to note that the Foundation is well placed to continue its objectives to promote
health, educational or social research and to encourage and advance investigation into the cause,
prevention, diagnosis and treatment of any condition that may affect the general health, education
or welfare of children.

Research Committee Report From the Chairperson
The Research Committee received 127 Expressions of Interest for funding in 2013, of which 37 were
shortlisted to progress to the Grant Application stage. The committee were impressed with the
quality of the research proposals and innovative ideas being put forward.
The 2013 Grant Applications Round resulted in the commitment of $1,180,000 to fund 20 separate
grants to universities, medical research institutions and hospitals in South Australia and the
Northern Territory.
Institutions receiving funds in 2013 included: Flinders University, University of Adelaide, University
of South Australia, Women's and Children's Health Research Institute in South Australia; and
Menzies School of Health Research in the Northern Territory. (Please see Table 2 for details)
Two researcher projects, namely those of Professor Cory Xian from the University of South Australia
and Dr Raman Sharma from the Women’s and Children’s Health Research Institute, were awarded
the maximum grant amount of $75,000. (Please see Table 1 for details)
The Foundation aims to support and nurture emerging researchers, so that good ideas from young
investigators can be brought to fruition. Researchers applying for the first time as Chief Investigator
may elect to apply for an Early Career Grant of a maximum of $35,000. I am pleased that in 2013, the
Foundation funded five Early Career investigators. (Please see Table 1 for details)
To date, the Foundation has supported almost 800 research projects, for a total of $ 20,569,365.
(Please see Table 4 for details)
I would like to acknowledge and express my appreciation for the contribution by independent
referees, who provided peer review reports on the proposals, thereby assisting the Research
Committee in the selection process. As experts in their fields, these reviewers provided valuable
additional insight, which ensures the highest standard of research is undertaken under the
sponsorship of the Foundation. (Please see Table 3 for details)
I thank also my colleagues on the Research Committee, who are to be commended for their
contribution to the process, this year reviewing 127 Expressions of Interest received and 34
shortlisted Grant Applications. It is a great pleasure to work with them and to know that the work of
the Foundation ensures that small steps towards improving the lives of children can continue to be
made.
