Chairpersons introduction
Many things have been achieved in the last twelve months, all due to the hardwork of members, staff and volunteers. To me the highlights have been thecelebrations of the award of outstanding from the OFSTED inspection for theMosses Pre-school gained at the end of the previous year, the success of theboiler replacement due to the fundraising efforts of our community members andmost importantly the way in which members, groups and staff have cooperated tolook to the future developments of the Centre and its vision.
Last year I referred to our difficult economic climate and our aims to operate withinstrict financial constraints, yet looking to continue to improve the environment andfacilities for the whole of the Mosses community. In terms of our financial position,we have managed this exceptionally well and our position at the end of thefinancial year is better than I have ever known it. With regard to the building, wehave consulted widely and taking on all your comments and suggestions, once wereceive the final consultation report we will be looking for funding to improve thebuilding and its facilities. These are demanding and exciting times!
I am reminded of when visitors come to the Mosses Centre how amazed and
impressed they are at the enormous diversity of our groups and what takes placewithin the confines of the building. The welcoming atmosphere from bothmembers and staff has been referred to many times. This is something we can allbe proud of.
During this year we have seen an increase in the number of Trustees and alsofrom new interested people willing to be considered as Trustees. We truly areliving in exciting and challenging times.
Finally I wish to thank you all for your support, members, staff and volunteers, foryour efforts and understanding. When we act together nothing is impossible.
Jeff Barker- Chair.

The yearThe year
The year 2011/2012 will probably be remembered for our Boiler
Appeal, when many Mosses user groups surpassed themselves in
raising over 5,000 in just a few months. This,
and a grant from the Awards For All National
Lottery fund, means that the risk of relying on a
boiler that is over 35 years old has now gone.
The year saw us continuing to provide a community hub for the
many and varied groups and services that happen weekly in the
Centre (See the lists on page 6 and 7) and providing our own
projects to benefit the Community.
The year also could be described as regrouping and looking to the
future in terms of our staff and trustees. The staff have been
expanding their roles and working as a team to give an efficient
and welcoming service to our users and user groups, while the
trustees having added to their number have been looking at the
strategic vision to take the Mosses into the future. All involved with
the Mosses are grateful to those organisations that have fundedthe Mosses over the year. These are listed on the following page.
The picture shows theWriters Group at the Mosses. One of the groups that held an

The Mosses Family Support Project
Including the Mosses Preschool
How time flies, just over a year ago we had been inspected by Ofsted and gainedrecognition for our dedication to providing Quality Childcare in our Mosses Pre-
School. We were awarded Outstanding in all 17 areas of our work. This was an
excellent start to the year with staff morale at its highest.
Bury Early Years team have on many occasions, brought staff members from
other similar provisions to ours, to see what can be achieved within a multi-
purpose room/put away provision and a limited budget. This is again recognition of
the good work by The Mosses excellent dedicated staff team of professional early
years practitioners. This year we can celebrate the fact that Karen completed her
Foundation Degree in Early Years Practice. Although this has been extremely hard
work for Karen to balance her home life with 3 children, work and study she is now
doing her top up BA Honours. Sarah and Donna enrolled in September via Holy
Cross College to follow in Karens footsteps and study for The Foundation Degree
in Early Years Practice. Michelle having completed a taster course in Sign
Language here at the Mosses, enrolled at Adult Learning for an intensive course
which she will complete in a year. This will be very useful as the recommended
guide lines is that it is good practice for childcare practitioners, to teach Sign
Language to all children as a communication tool. This, of course, as research
tells us supports children with language delay and those who have English
as their second language.

We continue to provide good quality childcare and serve our local community. Our
children appear happy, stimulated and develop an
interest in learning. We have an excellent reputation
for being a really good provider
of Early Years Education. Our
prediction based on our waiting
list, together with our parents
requesting that their children
remain with us next year, is that
we will be full at the start of the
new school year in September.
Stay and Play project
Our continuing contract with Little Oaks Childrens Centre means that we
continue to provide a weekly Stay and Play session. Local parents bring theiryoung children to have fun and interact with other families and make new friends.
We also provide a toy library so children and parents can do an activity together at
home; this has proven to be very popular. Two staff are on hand to support and
advise parents with related childcare issues.
Outreach ServiceAlso in partnership with Little Oaks we have an Outreach Service where we
support families in their own homes as well as in the community. The referrals for
these families come from other professionals such as health visitors. Together we
assess the concerns and plan a piece of work to support the family.

Supporting Mosses User groups / Crche provision
Our Mosses Pre-school is also funded to provide childcare places for parents
attending groups at the Mosses. For example an ESOL class where parents learn
English.
In addition to the Mosses Pre-school we have a crche service for Mosses user
groups. For example, Eagles Wing is a group based here at the Mosses who
help/support asylum seekers and refugees. This group, via a Children in Need
grant , commission us to provide a crche on two mornings per week. Whilst the
children are being cared, for their parents can enjoy time to join a sewing group
and a parent support group. We had a moment of fame when BBC radio
Manchester came to the Mosses to do a live interview about how the Children in
Need money is used.
As you can see the Mosses supports local and borough wide families and their
children to provide good quality childcare and family support.

The delivery of courses in a community setting has attracted adults from the localcommunity and many have been encouraged to move on to courses at AdultLearning & Bury College.
Many people who enrolled on courses were volunteers, either with Mosses usergroups, or from other Bury based community & voluntary sector organisations. Many existing volunteers have gained new skills on courses and increased inconfidence.
Example comments from Feedback forms:-
Help family to be safe on line (Computer security)
Better relationship with deaf sister (Introduction to sign Language)
Confident to deal with emergencies (Emergency fist aid for
children)
I can use it for typing letters (Basic computers for the confused)
If anything happens when I am coaching (emergency first aid)
Easy to understand (Food Hygiene)
Will help myself & the lady I share my home with to relax more and
give us an activity to do together, (Hair & Beauty)
I want to start a new business (Introduction to setting up a small
business
We will find out in the summer months if NLDC funding will beavailable to apply for in the next academic year or funding may beavailable from other sources to run a similar project.

Mosses Junior Club
The Junior Youth Club
provided a valuable service
to children of east Bury
aged between 8 - 12 years
old. Most weeks saw 20young people attending our session on
Wednesday evenings.
Over the summer, an innovation for the club was Outreach work in the
Openshaw park to take advantage of the light evenings and to work
with different young people.
The club has been funded by a variety of funding streams over the
years which have increasingly become short term. Funding from
Forever Manchester allowed us to continue the club up to the summer
months this year . Unfortunately the club did not re-open after the
summer and the Association is exploring
strategic ways to continue to this work in
conjunction with continuing the Youth club
work (see the next page).

Youth Club
In liaison with Bury Council Youth Service a Youth Club for the over 12s
met weekly. Members of the Junior Club where able to attend this club
when they reached the appropriate age. Unfortunately from April 2011
the Club was a victim of Bury Councils Youth Service cuts .
The Association is looking to find the resources to continue youth and
Junior work in area. As we move into the new financial year a one-offgrant from Bury Councils Youth Review Fund will allow us to employ a
part time Youth Development Worker to work with 13 to 19 year olds.
Which could be a launch pad for further Youth and Junior work.

Civil Service Retirement Fellowship
Absences due to ill-health restricted our activities at the beginning of theyear, but we continued to meet each week and maintained our visitingcommitments to those members no longer able to attend. Thingsbegan to pick up following our AGM and between September 2011 andMarch 2012 we managed to squeeze in a talk Safeguarding yourFinances, a Lancashire based quiz, a pub lunch, a Christmas lunch, two lunches at Bury College and a guided tour of the Fusiliers Museumwhich included a cream tea in the caf.
The Bury Group is part of a national organisation and we are still verymuch dependent on our parent body, the Civil Service Retirement
Fellowship (CSRF) for their generous financial support towards our ongoing running costs. With that assistance we are looking forward toanother successful year at the Mosses, which has been our homesince its opening in the early 1970s.

Hard of Hearing Support Group
The Hard of Hearing Support Group meetson Monday mornings from 10 to 12 andoffers members a lively and enjoyable startto the week. Each class begins with Dianetelling us a story without voice. This helpsus develop our lip-reading skills but also informs us about interestingthings, whether it be Faberge Eggs, the numerous (and frankly
unbelievable) uses of cucumbers, or the Golden Washroom. To keepour little grey cells active we are later tested on what we have learnt. We also practise finger-spelling and some BSL signs, plus speech
movements, learning to hear with the eyes and tipsfor communication in different situations. Togetherthese help us to become more confident in a socialsetting. At the time of writing we are looking forwardto consolidating our skills by way of a visit to
Towneley Hall near Burnley.

SolidarityBury committee in solidarity with asylum seekers and refugees
OUR AIM: To offer a regular social event in which anyone seekingrefuge will feel befriended and welcomed by local people. We have held99 monthly events since we began in 2003. In the past 12 months wehave been funded by a combination of money from Bury MBC via theManchester Community Foundation and the cosmetic firm Lush. Weregularly have 20 volunteers, with new members joining us to help withthe work of running the Socials.
Over the past 12 months we have welcomed at least 100 members toeach social. These have been some guests who have been coming forthe past 8 years, happy to make a date to meet friends and enjoy thehappy atmosphere, but also newcomers who are welcomed andencouraged to make friends and get support from the well establishedcommunity of refugees we now support. The benefit of offering apredictable, regular event each month is clear. Members come frommany different cultures, countries and religions but all enjoy the chance
to celebrate and relax with their friends. All find a welcome at theMosses Centre and may become weekly members as a result of thekindness from staff and volunteers. At each social we have a room with second hand clothes, toys andhousehold goods which are always appreciated.
3 Babies have been born to members this year and 2 more
are expected soon. In addition many members, who havebeen terrified that they will be deported, have been grantedthe right to stay. We are so relieved for them and celebrate
their courage. The members who received the good news some yearsago are now applying for British Citizenship. This costs a lot and needsgreat determination, but has been granted to all who have applied sofar. As a result many members have British Passports and are able totravel with their children to meet their extended family, to make contact
at last with the friends they left when they fled, or are simply free to goon holiday.

Some of our regular members suffered a lot this year from theirexperiences as asylum seekers, and still live in fear of being returned tolife threatening circumstances and our members support each other inthis situation, . However, we have great concerns that some willbecome destitute and homeless, especially if they are single. Friendsof Solidarity was set up as a Bank account to be used to support thefirst family made destitute by the Governments rules. They are nowhappily settled in London as British Citizens, and so our money is usedto support anyone else in this terrible situation. We have enoughmoney each week to support 2 individual homeless members, but infact we have 6 members who have been refused and made homelessand without support. At present we are dependent on donations people
give to us for this purpose and so these 6 members know they cancome to the Mosses each week and get a warm welcome, a foodparcel, courtesy of Porch, and some cash to use for necessaryexpenses. We are planning to continue with our socials on the secondSaturday of each month, other than August. Thanks to the Mosses stafffor all their help.
