Letter from the Executive Director

Dear Friends,

It is with great pride that I would like to introduce this Annual Report

for 2010, a year marked by a conscious effort to maximize our impact

in the community by expanding our partnerships. With this

philosophy in mind, we launched into 2010 seeking new, effective

working relationships and focusing on outcomes. We have been

involved in successful public private partnerships for ten years, most

notably with Novartis Oncology for their Glivec International Patient

Assistance Program (GIPAP) and subsequently for other access

programs. The focus of 2010 was on identifying specific needs and lining up organizations who

could contribute to addressing them.

In partnership with key opinion leaders from the International CML Foundation (iCMLf) we

developed a training module for physicians treating CML in Emerging Regions; in partnership with

patient organizations in 30 emerging countries and thousands of volunteers, we launched and ran

a successful awareness campaign and collected more than 13,000 signatures for the World Cancer

Declaration; and in partnership with a global multidisciplinary working group, we are addressing

the pressing need to expand diagnostic capabilities in low resource settings.

Our partnerships have involved survivors and caregivers, physicians and other health care

professionals, the community at large as well as industry and other NGOs. In total, we provided

services to more than 22,000 patients, an increase of 30 percent, and we reached organizations in

30 countries with the Maximize Life Global Cancer Awareness Campaign, our most successful

campaign to date.

We are grateful to every single person and organization that showed the courage to step up and

give of themselves. We are especially thankful to our private donors, without whom we would not

be able to serve; to our volunteers with their relentless energy and selfless giving; to our staff and

representatives who carry our name with dignity and pride; and to our survivors and caregivers for

showing us the way. The year 2010 allowed us to take a step into a universe of possibilities and we

are marching full speed towards 2011 with the goal of making cancer a global health priority.

International Patient Helpline

The International Patient Helpline is the flagship program of the organization. Every

year we receive thousands of requests for help from cancer survivors, advocates and

caregivers around the world.

Our approach in responding to requests follows a protocol with strong emphasis on

patient privacy, the need to work with the physician as a partner, and overall respect

for diversity in cultural beliefs.

Our helpline is staffed by a highly professional, multicultural and multilingual team of

advocates based in our global office, working in conjunction with advocates based in

targeted countries around the world. Advocates are able to team up to bolster case

management as needed; utilizing a web-based patient tracking system developed in-

house that facilitates collaboration in real time.

Our helpline is made possible in part by a sponsorship from each of the following companies:

Novartis Oncology, Cephalon, Alexion, ChemGenex, Ariad, and Global RX.

Support services to 22,000 families from 128 countries

Total revenue of $2,059,999

Financials

In 2010, we continued to develop strong partnerships with key stakeholders,

seeking projects that benefit our constituents and encourage organizational

growth. Our revenues surpassed 2 million USD for the first time in the history of the

organization, of which 88 percent were applied directly to programs, 8 percent

covered administration and, 4 percent covered fundraising costs.

Our business model was further strengthened by diversifying the number of

collaborators with whom we are now engaged in long term program partnerships.

Sponsorships, private donations, and revenues from these public private

partnerships provide support to our programs.

In October for the second year in a row, The Max Foundation partnered with patient

associations around the world to help raise awareness of the needs of people living

with cancer, with the aim of making cancer a global health priority. Led by

thousands of volunteers, patient associations came together as part of the

campaign, organizing more than 60 events in cities around the world.

CML training to 1,000 physicians from emerging countries

Virtual Education Program for Physicians

In 2010, a partnership with the International Chronic Myeloid Leukemia Foundation

(iCMLf) enabled us to bring CML education to physicians treating the disease in

emerging countries.

One thousand copies of the program were sent to physicians in more than 50

countries. Additionally, 120 physicians from 26 countries were able to participate in

a networking event with The Max Foundation and the iCMLf at the 2010 American

Society of Hematology (ASH) meeting in Orlando, Florida.

400 local handmade hats sent to children in 5 countries

With Love in Every Stitch

In 2010, members of our local Washington community made over 400 knit hats that

were sent to children hospitals in Russia, Uzbekistan, Guatemala, Mexico and the

United States.

Before the hats were sent overseas, a “With Love in Every Stitch” tag with a kind

message was tied on by volunteers. All hats were hand delivered by local

representatives of The Max Foundation to the children in hospitals who rummaged

through the hats of various colors, sizes and designs to find the one that made them

smile the most.

300 art submissions from 21 countries

Maximize Life Art Project

People living with cancer express themselves in many mediums and the fact that so

many survivors have chosen to share their art is a powerful gift. Anyone viewing this

year’s art submissions will find themselves moved by the emotion of the art pieces

communicated through the color and content on each canvas.

The 2010 art collection is infused with life, featuring countless natural themes including

landscapes, sunsets, blossoming trees, ocean views and butterflies flying off the

canvas. We received over 300 art submissions from 21 countries!

Beyond collecting art for our annual art project, patient groups around the world have

also participated in art therapy workshops.
