Simply Thank You. When looking back over this year, the patients, staff and Board of Directors of The Saban Free Clinic have much to be thankful for – but mostly for the very generous donors who continue to stand by us, even when the economy does not.

Even the most well-positioned organizations felt the hard hit of the economic downturn, and the Clinic was no exception. At the beginning of the Fiscal Year 2009, leaders of The Saban Free Clinic recognized the need to position the Clinic for the looming State budget cuts and changing economic trends. We tightened our belts and looked for additional ways to efficiently deliver services so we wouldn’t have to lay-off staff or cut services to our patients.

Our patients were especially affected by the economy. And as the economy worsened the need for our services increased. We saw a 300% increase in calls for new patient appointments. The Clinic’s call center tried to accommodate as many appointments as they could, though we were barely able to keep up with the demand.

As many of you know, the State budget cuts particularly affected the Clinic and our ability to see patients. Funding for adult dental services was significantly cut as was funding for specialty care. Medical and mental health programs were hit hard with a 64% reduction to one of our state funded programs. Once again, our donors and foundations came through with much needed funding for these programs.

And through all of this, the Clinic has accomplished a great deal; please see our Highlights on page 4. We are looking forward to next year as we are already hard at work on our list of achievements for the Fiscal Year 2010. We do this as we deal with the continued downturn of the economy and a state budget that once again is proposing dramatic cuts in health and human service programs that will have severe impacts on the Clinic budget. We however remain confident that with supporters like you, we will be able to still give the services our clients depend on. Please keep up to date with our activities, by visiting our website at www.thesabanfreeclinic.org, by following us on Twitter or becoming our fan on Facebook. We truly appreciate your support of The Saban Free Clinic.

HighlightsThanks to our many partners, the 2009 Fiscal Year was a year of significant achievements for The Saban Free Clinic. The following are highlights and successes from 2009 that would not have been possible without our patients, volunteers, staff, Board of Directors, Friends of The Saban Free Clinic, many community partners and especially our donors. The Clinic provided 89,373 patient visits to 21,122 unduplicated clients. Ninety-eight percent reported living at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Level, which for a family of four is less than $44,100 annually. The Clinic is committed to building and sustaining new programs that allow staff and health care professionals to have a strong impact on the lives of patients. The following is a brief summary of highlights and successes of the past year that would not have been possible without your support:

• The Behavioral Health Department introduced a Saturday Art Therapy Group for young children. This new program provides a non-traditional and effective means of expression and intervention. The Tools 4 Teens program was also introduced this year to help teens navigate some of the social and developmental issues that they confront as teenagers. Women’s and men’s support groups were also initiated for patients who have completed individual therapy at the Clinic, yet need additional support and help. Behavioral Health saw 1,093 patients during 11,225 patient visits.

• The Dental Department successfully transitioned to electronic dental records and digital radiography. Last year, the Dental Department provided 12,398 patient visits to 2,989 patients. Wait time for follow- up appointments decreased from 3 weeks to 2 weeks, and the number of walk-in patients was increased to accommodate more homeless patients.

• The Medical Department enhanced the Chronic Disease Management program by adding asthma along with diabetes to the program. This meant patients of all ages had their asthma more effectively managed.

• The Education and Outreach Department introduced the Kids-N-Fitness program at The Wallis Annenberg Children and Family Health Center. The Kids-N-Fitness program is a four-week nutrition and exercise program developed by Childrens Hospital Los Angeles for children ages 8 – 16 and their parents. Each ninety-minute session is designed to promote healthy living, change family eating habits and physical activity behaviors, decrease weight gain for overweight children, and provide ongoing support to help maintain healthy behaviors.

• Participants in the Clinic’s Reproductive Health Education Programs presented a “PhotoVoice” display of pictures taken by them depicting the media’s mixed messages regarding safe sex. Theatrical presentation of safe sex vignettes complemented the gallery-like display.

• Clinic staff recently participated in an “Attracting and Retaining Patients Collaborative”. Sponsored by L.A. Care Health Plan and Primary Care Development Corporation. The goal of the collaborative was to explore how marketing and customer service play a crucial role in client satisfaction. The focus of the Clinic’s participation was on the pediatric patients at the Clinic and how to improve customer service to all Clinic patients. This resulted in the implementation of the 5 Cs of Customer Service Program, which is a training tool for staff to improve on Confidentiality, Courtesy, Competence, Cleanliness and Caring.

• The Clinic performed 2,036 HIV screenings between July 2008 and June of 2009.

• The Clinic continued modernization of the Health Information Technology (HIT) systems. Integration of client data into our i2itracks client has allowed us to improve and systemize quality improvement efforts Clinic-wide, bringing the Clinic closer to the ultimate goal of electronic health record (EHR) adoption.

Planned Giving

Help Protect the Future of Community Health CareNothing can ensure the long-term viability of The Saban Free Clinic like endowment and planned gifts. Planned gifts are an assurance that our programs and services will continue to improve the lives of children, families, seniors and individuals in need of quality health care, dental care and human services. Planned gifts empower the Clinic to provide a medical home for generations to come.

Planned gifts prove beneficial to donors as well.

For the donor, peace of mind is assured with a planned gift that can:• Yield tax benefits• Provide supplemental income or prepare for the high expense of long-term care• Protect control of assets for heirs and blended families, either during the donor’s lifetime or as a bequest• Simplify estate settlement for heirs and spouses and avoid conflict over assets• Avoid probate, maintaining family and estate privacy and speeding up the transfer process to assure fair distribution of assets or preservation of a family business

Planned gifts may be made in many ways:There are many ways to design a planned gift that will ensure the health care we provide will remain “a right, not a privilege”. Giving options range from an addition to an insurance or retirement plan beneficiary form, requiring no legal assistance, to naming us in your will.

Planned gifts can include:• Bequests• IRA Accounts• Charitable Remainder Trusts• Proceeds from a private foundation• Transfer of stock securities• Life insurance policies• Real Estate• Cash• Tangible Personal Property

Your Forever Free Legacy Gift Makes A Difference for Years to ComeThe Forever Free Legacy Circle is a group of donors whose planned gifts anchor the future of The Saban Free Clinic for the benefit of people who desperately need our help. Please consult your financial advisor to tailor a gift that expresses your wishes and concerns. Your planned gift helps sustain our mission to provide quality health and wellness services for a growing community in need of the support of caring donors like you.
