Stabilisation of the Forest Functions in Biotopes Disturbed by Anthropogenic Activity under Changing Ecological Conditions
Intheframeworkofresearchproject,theproblemsofstabilizationandsustainingofforeststandsinbio-topsdisturbedbyanthropogenicactivityinchangingcondi-tionofenvironmentareinvestigated.Thesystematicapproachoftheprojectincludesmonitoringofthehealthconditionofforeststandsandenvironment,thestudyofeffectofbioticfactorsonforestfunctionsandconse-quentinvestigationofbiotechniquesandsilviculturalmeasuresofforestregenerationandtending.
Forest edge effect on atmospheric deposition, nitrate leaching and soil acidification in forests on sandy soils
Theprojectevaluatesthepossibilityofforestedgecon-versionasaneffect-orientedmeasureagainstnitrateleachingandsoilacidification.Itinquiresintotheimpactoftreespecies,treedensityandtheoccurrenceofforestmarginvegetationonthewidthoftheedgezoneandtheenhancementofdeposition,nitrateleachingandsoilacidificationintheedgezone.Theexperimentsarecar-riedoutforestsinthenorthoftheCampineregionandinthewesternpartofFlanders,intheforest“Neigembos”andin“DeNeterselscheHeide”(theNetherlands).
Nitrogen retention in contrasting temperate forest ecosystems in a region of high nitrogen deposition (Research Foundation – Flanders FWO)
Atmosphericnitrogen(N)inputtoterrestrialandaquaticecosystemshasstronglyincreasedinthepastcenturyduetohumanactivities.Thishasresultedinmodifiedsoilprocessesandvaryingecosystemresponses,includ-ingincreasedbiomassgrowthandcarbonsequestration,butalsoincreasedNlossesbyemissionfromsoilsandbyleachingbelowtherootingzone.Nevertheless,considerableNretentioninforestshasbeenobserved.TheobjectiveofthisstudyistodetermineabovegroundandbelowgroundNretentionintwocontrastingforeststandsinaregionexposedtoachronicallyenhancedatmosphericNdeposition.
Present and future population dynamics of black cherry (Prunus serotina Ehrh.) in pine forest on oligotrophic sandy soils
Controllingblackcherryonalargescaledoesnotagreewithnature-orientedforestmanagement.Itwouldleadtohomogenoussituations,withariskforinvasionofotherunwantedspecies.TheecologyofestablishmentanddispersalofblackcherryinEuropeandtheeffectsofitspresenceneedfurtherconsideration.ThepurposeoftheresearchistofindoutwhyblackcherryissoabundantinFlandersandtopredictthefutureforestdevelopmentinpresenceofblackcherry.Thedemographyofblackcherrywillbeexaminedatdifferentsitesalongagradientofsoilfertility(CampineregionandLimburg,Belgium)andinpinestandsofdifferentage(theOssenbos,theNetherlands).

TheaimsoftheprojectweretobuildnetworksofpilotzonesandexpertsonCriteriaandindicatorsforSustain-ableForestManagement(SFM).Theprojectaimedalsototestrelevance,costandfeasibilityofsomemonitoringmethodsforalltheindicatorsofSFMandimprovesci-entificknowledgeinfavourofmonitoringoftheLisboncriteriathankstoregionalspecificstudies.Itwasbetween30and40indicatorsthatwhereassessedon8forestareasofthousandshectares.Thus,wedemonstratedtheinterestofindicatorstoforestowners,managers,andotherregionalinstitutionsthroughregionaleventsandprovidingimprovedmonitoringtoolsavailableattheregionallevel.Allfinalreportscanbeconsultedontheprojectwebsite.
