PresidentIt is indeed an honour and a privilege to present to you my fourth annual report after what has been another wonderful yet challenging year.

With much of 2006 devoted to ensuring that Hockey WA and its partners presented a compelling submission for the retention of the Hockey Australia High Performance Program (HAHPP), we were duly rewarded with confirmation that our submission was successful and that the HAHPP would be remaining in its rightful home – WA for a further 6 years.

My thanks, appreciation and congratulations on behalf of the WA hockey community is extended to all those involved but in particular Working Group Chairman – Neil McKerracher QC (now the Hon Justice McKerracher) and Hockey WA CEO – Linda Hamersley for their unfailing commitment and leadership of a very talented group of people in pulling our submission together.

2007 has delivered real and demonstrable progress in the governance of our sport with the Board’s continued commitment to providing strategic leadership over a range of areas including strategic direction, partnership management and continuous improvement, which has modelled the Board’s motto of “Creating the future, not minding the shop”. Sound governance in these times is about accountability, responsibility and transparency and

3

to this end the board has introduced a system of self regulation, whereby we assess our performance as a board and our performance as individual directors. The outcomes of these assessments will be incorporated in a development and improvement program for individual Directors as well as the board as a whole.

Hockey WA continues to be a highly efficient and effective organisation that is in very good health financially and administratively and is committed to taking HWA to another level in terms of not only the sport but as a successful business. My thanks once again go to Chairman of the Finance and Audit Committee – Tony Leeflang, Finance Manager – Kim Rodgers and the other committee members for their continued financial prudence and leadership which allows our sport to enjoy its on-field and off-field successes.

Our great sport also enjoys tremendous support (financial and otherwise) and commitment from many people and it would be remiss of me not to acknowledge our sponsors, corporate and program partners and the many volunteers who work tirelessly week in – week out to assist in the successful delivery of our sport to our members and the wider WA community. I continue to be amazed (pleasantly) by the commitment of everyone involved in hockey and for their pride in supporting the improvement and growth of our sport.

During 2007, I had the pleasure of visiting and chatting with a number of our regional associations. I thank you all for your hospitality and for your candour in discussing opportunities for improving our sport and the relationships between our city and country partners. Whilst some regions are experiencing a decline in participation, the commitment, passion and determination of our sporting leaders in these areas will ensure that hockey continues to have a presence.

The growth and promotion of our sport across the board still requires much work to be done and Hockey WA will continue to explore new and innovative opportunities to not only stem any decline in participants but to also create new avenues for our sport to grow participation and profile across Western Australia.

We have once again enjoyed a successful year on the field, with most of our men’s and women’s state teams (field and indoor) finishing in final Co Cont’d

four placings. In particular, congratulations to the SmokeFree WA Diamonds who secured back to back Gold in the Women’s AHL (making it three out of the past four years) – special mention must go to retiring coach – Colin Brandis for his commitment and drive with this team, which has played no small part in the team’s success. Acknowledgement must also go to our SmokeFree WA Thundersticks, who with a young and developing team overcame injuries and adversity to finish a creditable 2nd and demonstrated they will be a force to contend with in the future. Our thanks to Jason Duff for his coaching and development of this team and we wish him all the best in his new role with the Hockey Australia High Performance Program.

I concur with one of my fellow state presidents who wrote “that it is indeed an honour and a pleasure to lead such an outstanding organisation” – as it has truly been an honour and a pleasure to be President of Hockey WA for a fourth year. An honour because I lead such a well organised, healthy and dynamic organisation and a pleasure because hockey is such a wonderful game administered by competent and devoted people right across Western Australia.

I must once again thank an outstanding Board of Directors for their loyalty, commitment and support and for their undying commitment to improvement. I would like to think that after four years I might have provided the leadership and direction but the Board has been the ultimate decision maker.

Finally, I would like to acknowledge the value and dedication of a wonderful group of management and staff, exceptionally led by CEO – Linda Hamersley. It is largely due to the dedication, commitment, expertise and sound judgement of this group of people that we have been able to continue to enjoy another successful year.

My personal best wishes to all our members, sponsors and partners for a safe, happy and enjoyable “off season” and I look forward to once again being a part of such an exciting sporting entity.

Ceri WriterPresident

CeoAs 2007 draws to a close and I reflect on the business of the year, I provide the following report to the Hockey WA membership.

Hockey Australia High Performance ProgramWhilst all activities of the administration are important, the directive from the board was to focus our resources on the retention of the Hockey Australia High Performance Program. A Working Group was formed in 2006, most admirably led by Justice Neil McKerracher, teamed with Graham Brimage – Department of Sport and Recreation, Steve Lawrence – WA Institute of Sport, Ceri Writer, Sally Carbon – Hockey WA board and fully supported by the Premier and Minister for Sport and Recreation.

After submitting a formal and compelling tender to retain the program in Perth and providing a presentation to the Hockey Australia board in November 2006, it was with complete jubilation that we received the news [in April] that Hockey WA was successful in its endeavour to retain the program for a further 6 year term, commencing January 2009.

I fully believe this is the best outcome for continued success of the High Performance Program and with valuable support from the State Government, includes tangible financial benefits to the Western Australian hockey community. The contract has been signed by all parties with work now progressing on providing the initiatives that were included in the tender.

Strategic PlanAt the January board retreat a review of our plan took place with new objectives included for 2007. Our advisory committees and staff have worked together to achieve those objectives; which will complete the third and final year of our current strategic plan.

The next strategic planning phase will take place with the board in January 2008. In anticipation of that, the administration has been gathering data to provide the board with as much detail as possible to enable them to set the direction for the next five years.

Projects undertaken during this year have been:

. Bar and Canteen Business Process Review: The review was commissioned to gain a clear understanding of processes currently being undertaken that could be integrated with existing Hockey WA processes and to identify changes that will be required to streamline administrative activities relating to the two entities. Further, the review was to ensure the staff are operating to industry best practice standards.

2. Bar and Canteen Business Plan: The Business Plan identifies opportunities to increase our services offered from the bar and canteen detailing the correlating costs and increased revenue from those activities.

3. Club and Regional Development: To obtain a snapshot of regional hockey the President and I have undertaken a “regional tour” to discuss issues in the different regions that can be addressed by the board and administration and included in our future planning process. Regional Associations that we met with were: Bunbury, Busselton, Central Midlands Women, Collie Women, East Avon, Geraldton, North Midlands Women, Roe District Men & Women, South West, Upper Great Southern and Warren Women.

4. Competition Structure: A task force has been appointed, and with input from the board, will make recommendations on the best structure for the competition in the next five to ten years.

5. Turf Allocation Policy: With the involvement of satellite turf owners and operators, a policy relating to the number of first division games that are required to be played at PHS, and then the allocation to those satellite turf providers of the remaining first division games was drafted and subsequently endorsed by the board. This provides the board with knowledge of the minimum number of games to be played at PHS into the future.

6. Outcome of New Ownership: In an effort to maximise the ownership of PHS, a feasibility study was commissioned to determine the viability of introducing an annual Festival of Hockey at the stadium.

PartnershipsHockey WA is committed to ensuring relationships with our partners are operating at an optimum level. The state government, through Healthway and the Department of Sport and Recreation, remain our

major partners and we continue to prosper as a State Sporting Association through their ongoing support and commitment to Hockey in Western Australia. Our Regional Development Programs flourish with the support from Healthway and we thank them sincerely for that assistance. It could only be considered unparalleled support that we have received from the Department of Sport and Recreation during the tender process to retain the Hockey Australia High Performance Program and their full support to Hockey WA as a State Sporting Association is truly valued. I look forward to personally working with both levels of Government to continue to grow our sport.

WAIS has again supported our elite athletes through the three way partnership with Hockey Australia for our National Training Centre programs for men’s and women’s hockey. We are fortunate to have high calibre coaching and support staff in both of those programs and our athletes benefit from their expertise.

Our relationship with Hockey Australia and the other State and Territory Hockey Associations is strong and we continue to look for opportunities to work together on marketing initiatives, junior recruitment programs, collective purchasing, information sharing and providing support as required.

dePArtMentsPArtiCiPAtionThis year saw a structural change to the development department with a reallocation of duties between participation and elite, in an attempt to increase productivity and efficiency within both of these important areas. Assisting the Participation Development Manager with existing activities and programs were Alistair Park, before he moved on in April to his teaching career of choice and was replaced by Nicole Serafini, Regional Development Officers, and numerous club and association volunteers.

The Hockey WA Metropolitan Junior Recruitment Program expanded for the third year in a row. Within this program 6 clubs conducted in-school clinics in seventy one schools providing an introduction of hockey to just over 3,000 students. Hook in2 Hockey, the follow-up program to in-school clinics, was again successfully conducted by these clubs and contributed to the growth of metropolitan minkey for the fourth consecutive year.

Hook in2 Hockey state wide expanded in 2007 with a total of 932 participants. With conversion to club membership consistently above 60%, it is now an established and proven junior recruitment model. WA continues to be one of the leading states to embrace this National program, and is continuing to work with Hockey Australia to fine tune the delivery to enable all clubs and regional associations to participate in the near future.

The North West region continued to be a priority in 2007 with the Participation Officer visiting on two occasions. This incorporated in-school clinics, a Hook in2 Hockey program for the first time in Broome and Tom Price, and the support of an indigenous hockey role model.

The review of the national coaching and officiating accreditation process was completed resulting in the role out of HockeyEd in April. With on-line learning options now available, coaching and officiating education and accreditation is accessible to more people. Ninety one coaches or officials completed either the community or beginner level training programs, with another 36 people registered and midstream.

StaffWe welcomed Melissa Johnson as the Operations Coordinator, Nicole Serafini as the Participation Officer and Daniel Tholstrup as an AFL Sports Ready Trainee at the beginning of the year. I have appreciated the on-going commitment to the organisation by the staff in this last twelve months. It is a constant struggle to balance the administrative tasks, committee responsibilities and the hours worked at championships and events and I thank every one of the staff that have accepted the challenge and performed at their peak during these busy times.

Thank youOn behalf of the administration, our thanks go to the volunteers who work together to make hockey the great sport it is. Without the support of the volunteers in the clubs, those working with our state teams, those involved on committees and the board of directors our job would be difficult. We truly appreciate the time, effort and dedication that they provide to the administration.

In closing, I would like to single out and thank our President, Ceri Writer for her leadership of the organisation and the support she provides to both me and the seven board members who work in unison to ensure our sport is provided with best practice governance and strategic direction. It is a pleasure to work with such a positive and hard-working board of directors.

I look forward to the commencement of the 2008 season and the opportunities the year will bring.

Hockey WA supported the Department of Sport and Recreation with a trial called the Junior Umpire Green Shirt Program which had proved successful in South Australia. It involves identifying and supporting new and developing umpires. The Elite and Officiating Officer coordinated this program and was supported by five clubs and two regional associations resulting in seventy junior umpires being involved. The trial was deemed successful and should continue and expand next year.

The HockeyNet membership database was developed further in 2007 with increased usage and accuracy by regional associations. Historical team numbers were also gathered from regional associations to go

Regional Development Officers were again active in Geraldton, Narrogin, South West, and Albany. Peel was split to create a separate Rockingham program, and Kalgoorlie was added for the first time in 2007. These officers are coordinated by their own regional association and receive some support, guidelines and Healthway funding advice from the Hockey WA Participation Development Manager.

HigH PerforMAnCe2007 was a significant and positive year of change for high performance in WA hockey. Most significantly, a restructure of the Development Department saw the creation of the new High Performance Department and a separate Participation Department which has allowed better focus on these two areas.

The High Performance department focuses on three key areas, being:

Coach the elite coaches Coach the elite athletes Coach the elite umpires

A major initiative of 2007 was to create an elite database of coaches, players and umpires which can now monitor the progression and success of any programs currently being run. WA is keenly awaiting the rollout of the Development, Advanced and High Performance levels of the Hockey Australia HockeyEd programs which will underpin the Official and Coach Development programs for 2008.

Athlete Development2007 was an exceptionally successful year for the two WA AHL teams. The SmokeFree WA Diamonds took out their third title in four years, and the SmokeFree WA Thundersticks contested and narrowly lost a dramatic home final to finish second. Congratulations to Colin Brandis on a successful four years at the helm of the SmokeFree WA Diamonds. His track record will be hard to beat.

In the junior state teams, 2007 produced a transitional set of results. Both the men’s and women’s U2 teams, the U8 men and the U5 women all finished in the top three places of their tournaments, which is a current target of the WA program. The goal for 2008 is to see all six teams make a top three placing.

The 2007 Talent Squads once again looked after our talented U3 athletes (Level ), U5 athletes (Level 2) and U8 athletes (Level 3) with success. Additionally, Hockey WA continued to work closely with the WAIS programs with 2008 looking most positive in all areas of Talent Squads and athlete development.

Coach DevelopmentWith the new coach database, informative and targeted communications with the WA elite coaches has significantly increased. This has been evidenced by the 200% increase in Expressions of Interest for the 2008 coaching positions.

The hosting of the 2007 Men’s AHL tournament saw an opportunity for some elite coach development programs to be run, and Hockey WA remains a strong supporter of the excellent Department of Sport and Recreation’s elite coach development programs that are run professionally and regularly throughout the year. 2008 should see an extension of the coach development program into new and exciting areas.Cont’d

umpire DevelopmentTwelve WA umpires performed at national championships in 2007. Also during the year, there was a successful initiative to increase the number of player-umpires performing at Wizard Home Loans Cup and League level. This drive will be continued into 2008.

There was also an elite umpire development session held during the men’s AHL which was successfully run by Don Prior.

StaffingFor the last few months of 2007 and for 2008, the High Performance Department has a staff of two, being Scott Goodheart (High Performance Manager) and Jayde Taylor (High Performance Officer).

Special thanks goes to Katrina Powell who was the outgoing Elite Programs Coordinator in January 2007, and Kelly Colgan who filled the Officiating and State Teams Administration Officer role for most of the year until her internal transfer. Thanks also to the High Performance and Coaching Committee of Tricia Heberle, Graham Reid, Bevan Lawrence and Colin Batch for their guidance and support throughout the year.

Having started the 2007 financial year with a new “Member & Player Insurance Policy” introduced by the Hockey WA Board, it was always going to be a busy start to the season. We also had to plan for the integration of the Perth Hockey Stadium financial operations into Hockey WA with the impending voluntary dissolution of the Perth Hockey Stadium (Incorporated) entity. Other important features or milestones to the year have been:

• Review of and contributed feedback on the WA State Government’s Green Bill tabled to replace the current Associations Incorporation Act 987.• Expansion of the protection wordings and benefits offered under the various component insurance policies, and introduction of ‘on-line top up cover’ for clubs, teams and individual players under the Hockey WA group insurance plan with Sportscover Australia.

• Introduction of on-line payment facilities with Westpac for member and player payments of Hockey WA and PHS debtor accounts, as part of the overall upgrade of the Hockey WA website.• Work associated with the submission for and ultimate retention of the Hockey Australia High Performance Program.

Aside from all of these we have managed to keep the usual financial operations ticking over, which featured the planned PHS Field 2 turf replacement at the beginning of the year, overall increased membership and teams in competitions and championships, substantially increased participation in the Hockey WA group insurance plan, increased sponsorship arrangements and facility turnover. Some of these have assisted us in meeting our budgetary requirements. In helping us to achieve the above I extend a big thank you for efforts during the year of our two part-time Finance Officers, Laraine Waldron and Fiona Young.

The Perth Hockey Stadium (Inc) was finally dissolved on 27 April 2007 at the State Corporate Affairs Office (DOCEP). Members will need to adjust to the changed effect of the inclusion of the PHS trading operations into the annual financial statements of Hockey WA. With the required substantial non-cash depreciation entries to the Income & Expenditure Statement under Accounting Standards, this results for the first time in recent years in a substantial loss or deficit being reported for the year.

The reality is that this will now be an ongoing feature to the audited annual financial statements of Hockey WA. Members need to appreciate that reporting of such negative results from depreciation charges is a common feature with other State Sporting Associations operating leased or owned facilities.

This of itself does not necessarily have consequences for the Association’s ongoing solvency and ability to trade into the future. In that sense, regard must also be given to reported cash flows, responsible sinking fund strategies for major asset replacements (turfs), and elements of strategic planning and good governance.

2007 Financial Statements will be added to this Annual Report

after the 2007 reconvened AGM and will be available on the

Hockey WA website in March 2008.

oPerAtions2007 was the first year of the re-structured senior competition, which sought to stream teams into one of three competition types – Premier League – the elite local competition and its supporting grades; Provisional League – for turf grades not represented in the Wizard Home Loans Cup and League or not feeding into those competitions and Metropolitan League – for teams playing on grass. Both men’s and women’s competitions adopted the new structure, with some variation to accommodate historical grade frameworks (such as Veterans Men’s grass games and Veterans Women’s preference for turf games).

The season review of Wizard and supporting grades occurred in early November and the complete season review will occur over the summer to gather feedback and make recommendations to adjust the competition structure and refine the framework.

Similarly, the Hockey WA competition rules were reviewed in 2006 and it was decided to produce a separate booklet for each league, to allow clubs simpler access to all rules which apply to a particular grade. These rules will again be reviewed over the summer to tidy up any issues which arose throughout the season and make modifications, where necessary, to better reflect practical issues.

The 2007 season also trialled the concept of 22 rounds in 8 weeks for the Wizard Home Loans Cup and supporting grades. The success of this initiative was discussed at the season review forum. All other senior grades played 8 rounds, and juniors played 4 rounds, and it is anticipated the length

of the season will be much the same in 2008. We are pleased to report that there was a promising increase in participant numbers in 2007 with 365 senior teams, 30 junior teams and 334 affiliated senior regional teams registering with Hockey WA.

We instigated a training allocations system for winter season training at PHS, which operated on a rotational basis within the scope of the training priorities policy to give all teams a fair allocation of training times throughout the season. This system extended to training allocations for the finals series and was generally appreciated by the clubs involved as it ensured everyone had an equitable share of the available training time.

.Apart from the winter season, which included our regular underage State and Regional Championships, the Country Championships and the very successful Minkey carnival, the major national event for us in 2007 was the AHL Men’s Finals week in late March. The Thundersticks guys worked their magic throughout the round games to end up in the Grand Final, which drew great crowds and was an exciting game to top off a great week of hockey.

Hockey doesn’t stop after the Grand Final winter season and we have since conducted the U3 Regional Championship and the U5 Men’s National Championship, both of which were well received by the public and players alike. Summer hockey is now under way and we have increased the range of competitions to include junior sevens, on Friday nights.

Facilities continue to be an area of concern for Hockey WA, with problems at both synthetic and grass grounds continuing to plague the competition. The Country Men’s State Championship experienced these issues first-hand, when the games had to be re-scheduled due to a major pump failure on Turf One. An improved maintenance system may help alleviate some of these issues into the future. Hockey WA will also continue to work with venue owners and local councils to educate managers and improve standards. Hockey WA is also currently working with the Department of Sport and Recreation to produce a State Strategic Sports Facilities Plan for hockey, as part of a broader strategic planning exercise.

Success in the Operations Department is heavily dependent upon the support of casual staff and volunteers who enthusiastically support our events and competitions, and on the extra effort that the staff members at Hockey WA are always prepared to provide to ensure our activities are effective for players and enjoyable for patrons. Umpires, technical officials, ground staff, bar and canteen staff, committee members, event volunteers, ball attendants (and their parents), court controllers for indoor, and a plethora of other supporters such as family and friends of players, all contribute to the development of a strong and healthy hockey community and all should be justifiably proud of the part they have played in making hockey in WA in 2007 a glowing success.

Thank you all for an enjoyable year. We look forward to the challenges of the coming year and appreciate the support you have given us this year.

Profile And BrAnding2007 was a busy year for Hockey WA. Over the summer our branding image was given a makeover with the redesign of our website and the introduction of InDesign programs that allow greater professionalism in the look of promotional material such as the Bulletin.

New sponsorship contracts with Just Hockey and Sportscover Insurance (who sponsor our officials) allowed fantastic merchandising opportunities. We were able to acquire AHL supporter shirts and caps, State team singlets, umpire and volunteer shirts as well as other equipment.

Sponsorship was an area of healthy growth and Wizard Home Loans continued their relationship as sponsor of our first division grades. Willow Bridge Wines became new long term sponsors in 2007 and as well as being the wine supplier at PHS they also sponsored the Willow Bridge League and Cup divisions.

Hockey WA was supported fully by other existing sponsors in CBH Group, Rising Stars and Kombat clothing. Perth Hockey Stadium sponsors included CUB Fosters, Team Electrical and VIP cleaners.

State Teams were given an opportunity to find sponsors with the introduction of the Gold Pages, listing businesses in a directory. Over $8,000 was raised with no cost to the teams. SmokeFree WA Thundersticks and Diamonds were again sponsored by Healthway with the addition of the Carbine Club (Men) and the Oxford Hotel (Women). Underwater Contracting Services supported women’s indoor hockey.

Promotion of events included tours by China and Malaysia; Men’s AHL Finals Week (with nearly 3,000 people attending the grand final); showcase games such as Australia versus the HA/AIS High Performance Program; Club Days and the Wizard Home Loans Gala Grand Final weekend. A carnival atmosphere and family friendly activities have been the promotional emphasis at these events.

The year has been a great foundation for our marketing activities and a basis for events to be held in the future.

The number of functions held in the Eastman Lounge and Champions Bar areas by outside organisations as well as the “Hockey Family “ has increased markedly both during the season and out of season.

Some of the events we have catered for this year include: the Canning District Education Department seminars, various divisions of Curtin University, work safe seminars , club sponsors and Club Days, birthdays (60th, 30th, 2st and 8th), and a wedding anniversary. We have also had the pleasure of hosting many visiting National and International team dinners and a breakfast for the High Performance Program with the Federal Minister of Sport.

We were successful in obtaining Willow Bridge as our wine supplier and Coca Cola Amatil as our new beverage provider.

May I say the successful operation of the bar and canteen is in no small measure due to our dedicated and hard working staff and a great deal of thanks is due to them.

CoMMitteesseniorThe Senior Committee took on new faces in 2007. Injecting fresh thought were Julian Peet (Suburban), Peter Mc Gough (Suburban), Morgan Jones (Old Guildford) and Phil Ewen (Whitford). The outgoing 2006 members were Peter Churack (UWA), Adam Scott (Modernians), Bev Ewen (Whitford).

In season 2007 the Senior Committee oversaw the bedding down of the new competition model that was devised in 2006. Although there were some minor changes in the pre-season nominations, the proposed competition model with new rules was implemented in full. To date it is difficult to gauge the success of the model without further analysis of formal feedback that is being collated at present. However, the informal correspondence throughout the year has seen some of the old chestnuts resurface:

• How clubs with different sizes and culture fit into the current competition model.• The reluctance of clubs to take on the responsibility of allocating umpires. • The Senior Committee’s relationship with the Elite Committee.• The effectiveness of match books and accuracy of records on the Hockey Net.

Finally I would like to thank the Senior Committee members for volunteering their time and hope that all the current members will return in 2008.

A special mention must go to Kim Jones who will be leaving us for her new life on the east coast. Kim’s wealth of knowledge, common sense approach and understanding of grading will be missed. Kim’s departure stresses the need for more volunteers to come forward and provide input, especially from the women’s side of the competition. We wish Kim and her family all the best in their future endeavours.

JuniorThe eleven members of the 2007 Junior Hockey Committee worked with a great deal of energy and purpose to create appropriate opportunities for players from Under through to the Under 7 age divisions. It is not always easy and at times families and clubs are forced to deal with difficult scenarios as player and club circumstances change prior to and during a hockey season.

The grading process initially drew very heavily upon paper returns from Clubs and Hockey Net information from the previous season. This year a team of thirty volunteers assisted with the paper grading process. The work of Barry O’Neill is particularly notable in setting up a process that attempts to be as objective as possible.

From this specially convened grading day the Junior Committee met to consider if grading games were required. A number of games were conducted at both the UWA and PHS turfs and game outcomes assisted the grading process. It continues to be extremely difficult to separate lower ranked A grade teams from the top A Reserve and/or B grade nominations.

Not surprisingly grading and ground allocation draw a lot of feedback from Clubs. The Committee firmly believes that the grading process is more reliable and transparent than in previous years, however, it is not perfect and it certainly does rely very heavily upon Club input and a realistic understanding of where a particular age division is at in a Club. Every effort is being made to further refine the grading

Co

MM

ittees

process and to continue to provide as much turf access to as many grades as possible.

Umpiring at all levels encourages a great deal of comment and emotion from players, coaches and spectators. A reality is that if our game is to fully flourish junior players need to be encouraged by all Clubs (from the top down) to see umpiring as a part of playing hockey. Club cultures need to fully encourage and model appropriate support of umpires through their own Codes of Conduct and action statements including the induction of coaches.

Again I wish to acknowledge the excellent work of so many volunteers involved in junior hockey at club level – junior coordinators, coaches, managers and management teams. Your work continues to inspire others. On behalf of the Committee thank you. Finally to the staff at Hockey WA led by Linda Hamersley a very sincere thank you. In particular Janelle Leiper who left Hockey WA at the conclusion of the 2007 season provided outstanding support to this committee. We wish Janelle well with her future goals.

We encourage all Clubs to focus heavily on juniors at Board and Management meetings over the coming months. After all, juniors are the future of our great game.

HigH PerforMAnCe & CoACHingThe HPCC continued to actively oversee the elite performance of WA’s athletes, coaches and teams.

At the beginning of the year, the committee investigated the restructure of the Level 3 Talent Squad structure, with a revamped program expected to be rolled out for 2008.

Also of significance was the adjustment of the Above Age Policy for our state teams. Reacting to evidence that junior athletes in their formative years had very little (if any) developmental benefit from playing multiple tournaments in one calendar year, the HPCC has rewritten and enforced the stated policy in 2007. We are able to report that 2007 was the first year that no male or female athlete played in more than one U5 or U8 tournament which should have a flow on effect for future years.

The HPCC also just recently completed the first phase reworking of the State Teams Selection Policy which has significantly clarified the process and policies behind athletes and off field staff selection.

New initiatives in 2007 also included the in depth debrief with each of our eight state coaches following their return from the national tournament. This has served as an excellent forum for two-way feedback as well as part of that coach’s professional development.

The HPCC has recently been most active in appointing the 2008 AHL coaches, and the 2008 junior team coaches. This task has been made harder, but more enjoyable, with over 40 applicants for these roles.

The HPCC charter precludes the WAIS coach being a member, so in March we lost the services of David Bell who accepted the role of the WAIS men’s coach. We were fortunate to be able to replace his services with those of Colin Batch, and Bevan Lawrence was added as a fourth member a month later. Myself and Graham Reid were continuing members from 2006. Thanks go to all these members for their time and energy in 2007.

PHsMany important changes are occurring at Perth Hockey Stadium (PHS). The de-registration of the Perth Hockey Stadium Inc was completed on 27 April 2007. The PHS facility is now incorporated fully into Hockey WA and is the responsibility of that Board.

The Finance and Audit Committee looks after the Stadium’s budget and the PHS Committee, which includes representatives from Curtin University, looks after the operation and development of the facility. The replacement of Turf 2 has now brought both playing surfaces to international standard. In January, we replaced the surface with a polypropylene product, which has proven to date to hold water well and play smoothly, and the new scoreboard on Field 2 was installed in time for finals games. The PHS Committee is currently refining the Stadium’s asset register and maintenance schedule with the assistance of consultants. In particular, thanks go to Andre Lee and Evan Nicholas, the Curtin University representatives, for their continued efforts in support of the facility.

offiCiAtingI am sure many in the hockey community will agree that 2007 will be remembered as a poor year for umpiring in this state. With many top class umpires unavailable due to health, extended overseas holidays or just taking a year off, we struggled to supply enough quality umpires to our highest grades. This also meant a few umpires were left to shoulder an unfair burden by regularly umpiring and coaching numerous games each weekend.

In particular, John Nettleton umpired and umpire coached way too many games this season plus his role on the Officiating Committee ensured a heavy workload for him this season. We are eternally grateful to John and many other umpires who have suffered quietly this season.

While we lost a number of umpires this season we also gained some very valuable player umpires including Steven Boyce and Darryl McCormick. As a result of this, Steven Boyce recently umpired at the U5 Australian Championships held in Perth.

On a positive note, many achievements still occurred this season including:-) The State Officiating Program (SOP) is now on-line on Hockey Australia’s web site and is now known as Hockey Ed.2) Sportscover and Just Hockey sponsorship of Officials

3) The DSR Green Shirt Junior Official program was rolled out as a trial program to three clubs and proved to be very successful. Hopefully a number of other clubs which have central venue fields will embrace this next season.

With the amount of concern shown by so many club officials, coaches and players about umpire numbers and quality you would expect all positions on the Officiating Committee to have been filled this season however half the positions on this year’s committee remained vacant and perhaps this is an indication that everyone is prepared to complain about officiating but few are prepared to actually do anything about the officiating issues facing our sport.

Finally, I would like to thank the tireless volunteers on the Officiating Committee including Graham Napier (Technical), John Nettleton and Hamish Johnston (Coaching), Peta Anderson (Juniors), Garry Burnett (Country), Frank Brown (Allocations) and our Hockey WA Staff Member Kelly Colgan together with all the Wizard Home Loans Cup & League TO’s and Umpires across the board who turn up week after week in good and bad weather.

players join the team for the 2006 Nationals. Three core players incurred injuries during the tournament as well which meant the depth of the team was intensely challenged. The boys, coached by Kynan Fuller, did extremely well considering they were down to only two substitution players for the last few games (of the double round) including the final. Finishing second at the end of a successful round meant they played NSW in the semi. NSW unfortunately came out on top by two goals leaving the WA team in third place.

The WA U2 Women’s team, (coached by Andrew Smyth) finished second at the tournament after an exciting final against NSW. Weeks of high intensity training and fitness sessions couldn’t quite get the girls over the line. Most of the group had played together with the exception of a couple of new additions. They were a relatively strong U2 Women’s team and to their credit finished three places higher than in 2005.

Our U8 teams both competed well at their championships in January 2007. Both teams finished in fifth place. The young players of WA are growing in numbers every year. The U6 age group is feeding into the U8s nicely. We are lucky to have a large number of U6 boys playing the sport and we are building on the U6 girls group for their inclusion in the 2009 Invitational Championships.

Last year’s state league competition hosted at Lumen Christi College was a relatively short season. This has been changed for the 2007/2008 season. The committee’s decision to lengthen the season this year from October through to February was influenced by player surveys.Cont’d

This is the state of indoor hockey in Europe. Australia is knocking on the door with respect to the talent of Europeans players, and there is no shortage of Western Australians amongst Australia’s best. It’s so exciting, fast and dynamic - no wonder millions worldwide watch the game!!

The WA Open Women’s team had their most successful year to date, being defeated by NSW with a “golden goal” in extra time in the final. Finishing 2nd place was an excellent achievement and a tough one to beat at the 2007 National Tournament in December. Fiona Young was named runner-up for Player of the Tournament. 2006 Coach, Mark Sandhu continued on after the National Tournament to coach the Australian team at the World Cup in Vienna during February. Three West Australians joined Mark in representing their country – Amanda Calton, Fiona Young and Jemma Norton.

The Open Men’s team went into the 2006 National Tournament as defending champions and favourites for a third title in as many years. ACT and NSW ended up battling it out in the final with our men finishing third. John Christie added to his legendary indoor hockey experience by travelling to Vienna also, as the Australian Men’s Assistant Coach. Players from WA who joined him were Graham Watts, George Watts, Rohan Wilson, Andrew Hunt and Jason Black.

Country Country towns are changing and this is reflected in the make up of teams at Hockey Championships. The low number of teams at men’s country week is a concern for us all. One of the reasons for this is the lower number of players playing hockey in some associations.

For the players attending country week it is a very relaxing and enjoyable three days. Congratulations to the winners of all grades. Congratulations also to the players who won the fairest and best awards in each grade.

Thanks to Laraine Waldron for all her work including court controlling during the season. We wrapped up the season at a cocktail function at the Perth Hockey Stadium. The integration of the indoor game into the world of outdoor hockey within Hockey WA is improving every year.

This year an All Stars team was selected which was well received. Congratulations to all players selected in this side. Thank you to the selectors who spent a fair amount of time watching games to pick this team.

Women’s country week was again a successful weekend with more teams than last year. A special thanks to the sponsors of country hockey the CBH Group.

A popular addition to the social calendar was the team theme night held at the Stadium where dress ups and karaoke were a great hit.

Congratulations to the winners of all grades and to the winners of the fairest and best awards in each division. To the girls selected in the All Stars and the Under 2s, well done to you all. Thanks to the selectors for your efforts and time in picking these teams.

The Place of Origin games for Veterans that preceded AHL Home matches were popular and the organisers hope to have more competitors next year.

To Scott Shires as Coach and Rod Thornton as Manager of the Men’s State Country team thanks for the effort you put in with the team to go to Mackay in Queensland and to come third. To Jo Morton as Coach and Bev Blake as Manager of the Women’s State Country team thanks for the work you put in to get the girls to Queensland for the Australian Country Championship. They also came third. Many thanks to the Country Committee for your effort and time you all put in to support our great game during the past year. We are there to represent hockey all over country WA. We are in need of more committee people so if anyone in hockey land has a bit of spare time we would love to have you on the committee. We meet three or four times a year so it is not a huge commitment.

Finally I would like to say a big thank you to Janelle Leiper from Hockey WA for her assistance to the Country Committee over the last two years and wish her all the best in the future.

The committee this year comprised Mal Skinner, Catherine McFarlane, Bill Campbell, Maris Margetts, Rob Lawson, Tracey Hough, Peter Westlund, Lorraine Browning, Janelle Leiper (staff ) and myself.

The Women’s midweek competition continued to expand with the addition of a further team to bring the total number playing to 22 teams and indications are that this trend is likely to continue in 2008.

The men’s division had 70 teams competing in the Saturday afternoon competition, one team fewer than for the 2006 season, in age groups ranging from over 40 to over 60. For the first time, there were insufficient teams nominating for the over 40’s division one and in order to provide a meaningful competition the division one and two grades were combined. As a result of this a sub committee was formed to investigate the future of this grade and to examine competition alternatives and a separate report on the outcome will be made at the annual veterans meeting.

The midweek competitions continued to flourish with the Monday night competition providing a transition for players to move from the grades to veterans and the Wednesday afternoon competition providing a social outlet for the more mature players.

The Men’s National Championships were held on the Gold Coast this year and WA continued their success from the Perth championships with what must be considered to be one of the most successful away tournaments.

Of the seven teams competing, all made the final four. Two teams finished in fourth place and five teams made it through to the Grand Final. Congratulations to the Over 65’s for winning their division.

The Women held their Championships in Sydney and also continued their success from 2006 with the Over 55 team winning their division for the first time. Unfortunately we were not able to field a team in the 45 division and some off season recruiting will need to be done to rectify this situation.

WA was also again well represented in the Australian teams selected at both the Men’s and Women’s Championships. Congratulations to all who were selected.

In closing I would like to thank Janelle Leiper for her assistance on the committee this year and wish her all the best in her future employment.

Buckley, Paige Collins, Fiona Boyce and Stephanie Andrews. Ashleigh Nelson was available for selection but due to her senior selection was not named in this squad.

WAIS with the support of Hockey WA put together a tour to New Zealand allowing young athletes exposure at an international level. We took a combined institute team with the cooperation of the NSW and Victorian Institutes of Sport. This was a success in the way all three institutes came together and was also valuable exposure for our athletes to elite travel and competition, one goal of the WAIS program this year.

The numbers we have in both squads bodes well for women’s hockey in Western Australia. As the program rolls forward, the focus is on the Olympics and the Junior World Cup program and to get as many athletes as possible into these teams in the next twelve months.

Neil HawgoodNTC Coach

nAtionAl trAining Centre WoMenAs we come closer to the end of year the greatest dream of all athletes is getting closer. With less than three hundred days to go until the Olympics, the WAIS program is striving to put as many WA athletes as possible in the Olympic squad.

Over the course of the year we have had many successes. Firstly the back-to-back win at the AHL by the SmokeFree WA Diamonds. This secured five athletes a place in the National Senior Australian Squad and three athletes a place in the National Development Squad. From this six athletes went on to represent Australia during the year with regulars Emily Halliday, Kobie McGurk, Kim Walker, Hope Munro and Shelly Liddelow joined by Ashleigh Nelson who was selected to play against Japan in late July and also selected to travel to South Africa and Europe with the National team in October.

WAIS athletes also participated in the under 2 National titles in Adelaide and the team finished second. From this tournament a National Junior Squad was selected and WAIS had six athletes named: Chantelle Ciallella, Kate Denning, Jemma

2

Boyce, Justin Knapp and Triston Clemons being selected in the National Junior Squad. All three played in the National Junior Team in a series against the Malaysian Junior Team in Maryborough and Buderim in August.

The WA Under 8 team finished fourth in the National Championship in Brisbane with Chris Bausor and Nathan McGuire performing strongly and subsequently gaining selection in the WAIS Development Squad in 2008.

Trent Mitton and Kyle Angwin played consistently throughout the championship and have been included in the WAIS preparatory training squad. This squad is involved in a program over three months and allows the athletes access to many of the services that are available to the WAIS Elite and Development Squad athletes. Jayme Walsh, Justin McDougall and Sam Pike have also been selected in the preparatory squad for 2008.

Strength and Conditioning coach Geish Hori continued working diligently with the athletes to increase their strength, power and speed. He has developed appropriate programs to continue significant increases in the athletes general conditioning and subsequent decrease in the number of soft tissue injuries. All athletes have developed a positive approach to the WAIS program that includes support from ACE, psychology, physiology, medical and nutritional staff.

WAIS athletes were involved in a speed development program in August and September. The sessions were conducted by Naoki Kawamori (ECU) and involved sled towing with heavy or light weight loads. Initial results and evaluations have indicated an improvement in the speed of athletes over 0 metres.

All athletes have coped well with the change of Head Coach in the program in April and have maintained the high standards established by Jason Duff in recent years. Paul Gaudoin has continued in the role as Assistant Coach of the WAIS program and will have even greater involvement in 2008 as AHL coach.

David Bell NTC Coach

nAtionAl trAining Centre MenWAIS athletes, Bevan George and Aaron Hopkins have continued to be selected in the National Senior Squad. The National team was involved in a number of tournaments in the year with Bevan and Aaron playing in the Dutch series in January, the Azlan Shah tournament in Malaysia in May and the Oceania Olympic Qualifier in Buderim in September. Aaron was also involved with the European tour in July. Both players will be in the Kookaburras team participating in the Champions Trophy in Malaysia in December.

Both players have been strong and consistent performers as an integral part of the back line in each of these campaigns.

The National Development Squad included five WAIS athletes with Fergus Kavanagh, Kiel Brown, Jason Vuletich, Ian Burcher and Brent Dancer gaining selection in 2007.

Kiel and Fergus were selected for the Kookaburras in the Azlan Shah tournament and Kiel was in the Oceania Qualifier team in September. Jason, Ian and Brent toured Europe in July with the Australian Institute of Sport team.

Kiel and Fergus have recently been added to the National Senior Squad and will be joined by Aaron Hopkins for a tour of South Africa by the Kookaburras in January 2008.

All nationally identified athletes will have their focus on selection for the Olympics in Beijing and will be working hard on their fitness and skills to maximise their chances of gaining selection in the Olympic Team.

Jonathan Charlesworth has again been selected in the WAIS Elite Squad and Greg Hearn and Graeme Begbie have been selected in the WAIS Development Squad after consistent performances at AHL and Under 2 levels respectively. They join Travis Taylor, Jason Gabriel, Tyler Lovell, Matthew Boyce, Tristram Clemons, Justin Knapp, Chris Bausor and Nathan McGuire in this squad.

The WA U2 team finished a very creditable third with a win against Queensland on the final day. The team improved with each game with Matthew

Season 2007 was highly successful for the SmokeFree WA Thundersticks.

With the inclusion of some new faces it was always going to be a different year for ‘the Sticks’. Paul Gaudoin was a welcome addition to the coaching group and took on the role of assistant coach. Alex Gray was the video analyst in a new role that had been created to assist in the pre and post-game preparations.

Damien Hicks took on the managerial role immediately adding value to the group.

Once again the Thundersticks were able to prepare in the best possible way, securing competition against International teams in Malaysia and China although turf replacements and interruptions to some training sessions were a minor distraction.

An invitation from Kalgoorlie to play against the Chinese was accepted and was a thoroughly professional and well organised event. The Thundersticks were successful in the second game wearing down the Chinese to take a 4-0 victory.

The pre-season for the AHL is a long and enduring affair and only the most committed make it through to the end. With the eventual dedicated team and off-field group, the team went into the finals series in the best possible shape.

Jonathon Charlesworth showed promise as a skilled striker, a role that he embraced throughout 2007. He performed above expectation and innovation was the key ingredient. He was supported well by Greg Hearn in his first season as a Thunderstick, demonstrating the poise of an experienced player.

The defence was the best in the league, with the return of Brent Dancer from knee surgery and the inclusion of Kiel Brown on the half line.

The round games again saw mixed fortune with a loss to ACT that meant the final round game against NSW would be hard fought for a finals berth. The resultant 3-0 victory was the best that the team had displayed throughout the tournament and highlighted the commitment of the group.

Injury free and at the top of their game, the Thundersticks put away a skilful and committed Victorian team in the semi final to advance to the final.

In the final they met a fired up Queensland team that had showed they were always the team to beat. During the rounds they finished clearly on top of the competition. The Thundersticks pressed hard and as the game wore on without score, opportunities became difficult to come by and the Thundersticks were looking likely to pull off the impossible. That all came crashing down in the last two minutes when Troy Elder slipped one past the Sticks defence.

Bevan George was the outstanding player for the Thundersticks and was awarded the player of the tournament.

The leadership group including Bevan George, Aaron Hopkins, Brent Dancer and Michael Boyce were outstanding and provided great support throughout the campaign.

Finally, thank you for the sponsorship support of Healthway, Graham Moss and the Carbine Club, Gold Pages sponsors and all the people that have helped the Thundersticks perform to the highest standard.

The SmokeFree WA Diamonds played great hockey to comprehensively outplay the NSW Arrows in the semi final which put the Diamonds in good stead for the Final against the Queensland Scorchers.

In the Final the Scorchers were on top of the Diamonds early and it took some time for the Diamonds to gather momentum. The Scorchers scored first but the Diamonds drew level through an Emily Halliday penalty corner to lock the score at - at half time. Although the Scorchers started the second half with a flurry of penalty corners (5 for the game), the Diamonds defended stoutly and were able to break through with a well worked goal to take the game 2-.

The SmokeFree WA Diamonds ability to repeat its 2006 win and again be in the top two teams at the end of the round robin series provides great confidence in this team continuing to be a serious contender for some years.

The SmokeFree WA Diamonds were well lead by Co-Captains Kim Walker and Emily Halliday and the team represented Hockey WA with distinction and pride on and off the field throughout the AHL season.

Kim Walker and Rheannin Kelly tied for the SmokeFree WA Diamonds Fairest & Best Player for 2007 and Emily Halliday was the team’s leading goal scorer. Kim Walker was voted the Most Valuable Player for the Final and Emily Halliday was awarded the Hockeyroos International Player of the Year Award for 2006.

The SmokeFree WA Diamonds had individual rewards for Emily Halliday, Kim Walker, Hope Munro, Kobie McGurk, Shelly Liddelow and Ashleigh Nelson who represented the Hockeyroos in 2007.

Lisa Pamenter and Jayde Taylor were selected in the National Senior Development Squad and Fiona Boyce, Chantelle Ciallella and Diamonds squad member Jemma Buckley were selected in the National Junior Squad.

The SmokeFree WA Diamonds officials including Sandy Johnstone (Manager), Neil Hawgood (Assistant Coach), and Fiona Chromiak (Physiotherapist) were wonderful contributors to the success of the Team in 2007. They all represented Hockey WA in a professional and positive way in all activities associated with the Team.

The Team was represented by a five player Team Management Group which provided an important interface with the team officials and coaches. This method of team management provided a positive approach to implementing and improving the positive and professional culture of the team resulting in a great performance.

The support for the SmokeFree WA Diamonds by the Hockey WA administration and Board was most appreciated by the team and officials. The positive approach to the Diamonds AHL effort was evident and greatly appreciated by the players and team management.

The Diamonds welcomed the sponsorship and support of Peter Hayes and the Oxford Hotel.
