I have never been hungry other than by my own choice- a voluntary fast, a quick diet after Christmas, a long flight overseas with bad plane food. On those few occasions, my mind invariably drifted to thoughts of those who hunger with-out choice around the world. Like many mothers, I had similar thoughts when my children were babies and cried out in hunger in the middle of the night. I could never get to them fast enough and the cries wrenched my heart. How many moth-ers around the world, I wondered, have no food with which to respond?

The problem can seem overwhelming, and it can seem far away. But hunger haunts those in our local community and there is much we can do to help. I am inspired by the story of Andrea Dent, our new volunteer food panty coordinator, and by the work Kingdom House is doing to relieve hunger pains in our own neighborhood. Andrea is working with local churches, corporations, and volunteers to maintain a supply of food for clients to meet the needs of their families. She has identified foods that are especially comforting and nourishing to our immigrant populations, feeding not only their physical hunger, but the hunger for a taste of home as well.

Even those of us with plenty of food have experience with these other types of hun-ger. In a world that seems full of despair, we hunger for hope. When we feel help-less, we hunger to make a difference. When we are alone, we hunger for genuine com-munity. These are hunger pains that I have felt many times, and I am grateful for the ways that Kingdom House has nourished my soul in past years. I know that I am not alone.

We have a new Board President in 2008, Scott Walker. Scott has actively volunteered at Kingdom House for years; many of you will recognize him from his golf tournament leadership. Like hundreds of others, Scott and I have found that volunteering gives us hope. There is a spiritual hunger in our community that is fed when we volunteer. We can change lives for a better world, and it happens when we work together.

Come spend a day working at the food pantry or reading to the kids. Help with summer camp when the weather turns warm. Join us for the golf tournament on June 16, or lend your expertise to one of our committees. There are countless ways to serve, and each will nourish your soul. Kingdom House is providing hope for those who hunger in all sorts of ways. We invite you to join us!

“Reverend Sanders, I have to talk to you about the pantry,” said Geraldine Stewart, our Coordinator of Family Sup-port, “The food is flying off the shelves as fast as we can put it on!” The trend of which she spoke grew dramatically in 2007. Other social service agencies confirm to us that this is an area-wide trend.

Hunger comes in many forms. A family foreclosed out of their home by soaring house payments, living in a kind of rotation among relatives and friends—a senior whose fixed income cannot keep up with rising food, energy, and medical costs—a homeless man whose lack of an address or telephone number keeps him out of the employment market. These and many more came to our pantry in 2007, and still come.

But there is another hunger of a different sort; one that does not hurt, but helps heal. Jesus of Nazareth said “Blessed are they that hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.” In 2007, in round numbers, we distrib-uted $100,000 worth of food, $90,000 in donated food, and $10,000 in food items purchased with cash donations

dedicated to the pantry. We helped feed over 200 families a month on average. The hunger for righteousness by those who gave to our pantry in 2007 has fulfilled these words in a substantial way.

Indeed, the extravagant generosity of our Kingdom House donors in 2007 was nothing short of amazing. Various accounting and economic factors make comparisons with past years

difficult. However, I think that you, our Kingdom House donor family, have never been more generous than in this last year. You helped underwrite our programs and gave us a significant carry-over at the end of the year. Our client

count for 2007 is still in progress—at this writing it stands at 4,488 unduplicated clients—and I believe that there is a strong likelihood that we will find once again that we have

served about 5000 or more. Eighty-six percent of our clients live at or below the poverty line.

I thank you; our Kingdom House staff thanks you; but even more, many prayers of thanks have been raised to God because of your faith and your hunger for righ-teousness. May it be so,

and even more, in 2008.
