BLAC President Report 2005-06

On behalf of the Bayswater Bullets Little Athletics Club Committee it is with much pride that I present the President Report for the 2005-2006 season. What a season it has been. With our season being shortened due to the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games, the committee and our athletes has been quite active across various areas with exceptional results.

Bullets Outgun Themselves With the season beginning on a relatively ‘quiet’ note with consistent performances by our Bullets including a number of early PBs recorded and club records being broken. However, and as the results will show in this annual report, there must have been something in those Santa stockings that led for a late surge of performances by our Bullets seeing a significant rise in not only in the number of PBs achieved but club records broken and placings won. In fact we have seen 17 club records broken and in the Knox Championship Day 20 of our athletes competed returning with 10 Gold, 12 Silver, 9 Bronze, 12 Fourth Place ribbons, 9 Fifth Place ribbons and 7 Sixth place ribbons won. This is the best Summer Track & Field season result since the 1996/97 season. Was it any of those red, black or green jellybeans or extra weetbixs they have been taking? We have also seen quite a few of our Bullets competing at other Open day events as well as regional and state championships. Well done! Nevertheless it was great to see our Bullets giving it their best shot (even during some of our most torrid weather we have experienced – at times very hot or very wet). I was also pleased to see a number of our Bullets taking their losses on the chin and personally congratulating the place getters. This is great sportsmanship and hope we can continue to instil on this important principle of ‘doing your best’ and accepting your win or losses with pride and grace in the future.

Bullets Becoming A Visual (and) Active Target This season the Committee has undergone a review of its past operations as well as introduced a number of new systems and initiatives for the future. This was due to the fact that in any sport or business, ‘the only thing constant is change’ philosophy needs to be applied. As many sporting organisation compete for growth in membership and financial stability so too should clubs such as BLAC in order to survive. Hence the Committee has become quite active in a number of activities this season such as, but not limited to:

� Developed Draft BLAC Strategic Plan including memberships, marketing and fund

raising plans; � Reviewed the BLAC Budget and developing clear and achievable targets; � Introduce the 12 PB Certificate; � Introduce an ‘Incident Report’ system to ensure issues or complaints are raised in an

efficient and effective manner; � Introduce a ‘Club Record Form’ to ensure records are appropriately endorsed and

recognized; � Created and distributed our new BLAC Competition Uniform; � Created and distributed BLAC Team Polo Tops and Team Caps with exceptional

results; � Developed and distributed our first annual BLAC Club Survey; � Identified and undertaken new fund raising activities such as the Chocolate Drive

and planned stalls for later this year;

BLAC President Report 2005-06 (Cont) � Reactivated our relationships with our feeder schools based within Bayswater; � Attend the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games Come and Try Out day held in

Rowville; � Participating in the Melbourne 2006 Queen Baton Relay; � Secured a few media articles in the local newspaper; � Attend to Bayswater South Primary School (Twilight) Athletics Day

This is also on top of our usual activity such as:

� Being the only Little Athletics Club that has a very active website containing a wealth of information;

� Undertaking our usual Christmas Raffle, Tattslotto, Cake Stalls and Twilight BBQs; � Ensuring our Parents Duty are monitored and in accordance to the requirement set

by the Knox Little Athletics Committee; All this helps make the club function effectively and provide services to our Bullets and their parents. Thanks must go to the following people for their contribution to the club: Mike Thomas � for doing our Twilight BBQ’s. Rob Clissold � for standing in on the BBQ when Mike Thomas was on Parent Duty. Douglas Nolan � for doing double shifts on Canteen Duty Wal Elliott � for doing double shifts on Canteen Duty Tracy Thomson � for taking down and convincing Bayswater Primary School to distribute

the Knox Centre flyers at the start of the season. The school had refused to do it for at least the previous 4 seasons.

Brydee Moore � for doing her box work and providing assistance to our Team Manager Amy Clissold � for writing events on the whiteboard and taking results up to the

announcing booth Cody Norton’s Family � for helping with duty All parents of our Bullets � For attending Parents Duty and being there supporting not only your

children but also assisting others parents as well so they can capture the joy of their children competing.

� Who after serving as Team Manager for three years (equal longest in the history of the club) will be standing down. Whether rain, hail, rain, heat, wind, rain or shine your persistence and support was most appreciated. Many thanks Donna!

� for organising our new team singlets pre-season; � for contacting companies for donations for Xmas Raffle, assisting with the Cake

2006-07 Season and Beyond (Approaching 40 Years) As 2005-06 season comes to a close, there are many opportunities for this club in the future. One of the great things about this Committee (which I have enjoyed) is that they are always on the look out for new opportunities and improvements as well as taking on board parents and children’s suggestions. For instance the club will be implementing a revised point scoring system which identifies season best and person best performances as part of the club points system, acknowledging those who compete in cross country, new awards such as Club Person of the Year. In addition the Committee has identified (and in some cases put in place) new fund raising /marketing related activities and I hope that we all can continue to support the club as we move towards a major milestone which is when the club will become 40 years old. This is a major milestone for this club especially given that the club’s first day of competition was on 2nd November 1968, straight after the Mexico Olympics, so we are (unofficially) looking at a proposed date for the Anniversary to be Sunday, 3rd November 2008 in season 2008/09 which will be during our 41st season. Hence planning needs to start very soon in order to celebrate this important milestone. A number of excellent suggestions has been put forward and these will be reviewed further by the Committee. Let’s see if we can grow our membership from 28 today to over 30 or even 40 by end of next season. I encourage all of us to walk the talk, promote the club, encourage the children to partake in sport (little athletics preferably), share ideas and thoughts so that we can continue to grow and maintain the special mateship and principles this club serves. When I say ‘we’ I mean not only the Committee but also the Bullets and their parents. We are all part of the journey and every journey has its benefits whether it be for the Bullets partaking in athletics (and becoming healthy in the process), meeting new friends, parenting capturing those special moments or to learning new skills. One only has to listen to some of our successful Commonwealth Games athletes and officials to learn how they first took part in the sport and why. Lastly, congratulations to all those award winners mentioned later in this report. On behalf of the Committee we look forward to seeing you again next season or even having a go at Cross Country, which started this morning!

Team Managers Report Well another good year of little Athletics has finished, over the 2005/2006 season, we have seen our club grow and become larger, the kids look like they are enjoying themselves and having more fun. Over the season we have had a lot of records broken; lots of kids have improved their performances and have become more confident. I would like to thank the committee for making my job a lot easier by helping out when needed. It has been good to see more people on the committee. In the 2003/2004 season, we only had 4 people on the committee. This year we had 7 members, so it spreads the work load out. I would like to thank Stephen for all his hard work updating the website, he has done a fantastic job and I am sure all the parents and kids appreciate it. It’s great for the kids to see their names and results on the web as it gives them a bit of pride. I would also like to thank my daughter Brydee for coming along and filling our parent info box each week, also thanks to Amy Clissold and Amy Breed for helping with the whiteboard recording. To Michael for cooking the BBQ, even though some nights it looked like we not going to have one because of forgotten gas bottles. A big thankyou to those parents who did there regular duty and also helped out on other occasions when needed. I have really enjoyed working with all your children again this year. It is a busy but rewarding job, thanks to the kids for their good behaviour. I just loved seeing their smiling faces when they know they did well or got a PB. TEAM MANAGER SERVICE AWARD A plaque will be presented to Donna Moore at the AGM in recognition for her service as Team Manager. Her three seasons is the equal longest in the Club History. Donna has always been the first at the track, the last to leave, completed many behind the scenes activities such as point scoring, PB updates for the webpage, compiling entries for Championship events etc. Donna will remain on the Committee but it will give her time to be out there on the track to watch her daughter compete in her last few seasons.

Our first Special Guest, Kerry (Hodgkinson) Semfel is a Club Life Member, elected 10 years ago in 1996 and was involved with our club’s golden era during the 1990’s. Throughout this time period, we had many athletes who had reached the highest level of Little Athletics. In the U/13 Australian Championships, Ben Sword won two Gold Medals in the 100m & Relay and Hayden Lacy won a Silver Medal in the High Jump. In the Victorian Championships during Kerry’s involvement with our

Committee, our athletes had won 20 Gold, 6 Silver and 13 Bronze Victorian State medals, some of these by her daughters Peta and Lindel, both of whom still hold many of our club records. Kerry joined the Committee in the 1989/90 season and finishing in 1997/98 and has been the Vice President, Team Manager, Knox Executive Member, Club Historian as well as on the General Committee. At the Knox Centre level, Kerry has been the Vice President, Centre Team Manager, Competition Director, Referee, Open Day/Championship Day Co-ordinator and Region Delegate. Kerry also spent six years on the Knox Centre Cross Country Committee from 1990 to 1996 as the Recorder/Point Scorer and Chairperson for 3 years apiece. Kerry became a Knox Centre Life Member in 1998 and for five years was involved at the VLAA Regional level as the Eastern Metropolitan Regional Secretary. It was Kerry who had the forethought back in 1994 to spend nearly a year’s research in compiling our club’s first 25 years history and is the main source of our club’s webpage contents. Our other Special Guest is Peter Lockwood, the Labour MP for Bayswater and former Knox City Councillor. Peter will help Kerry present the Trophies and PB Medals to our winning athletes. Peter has a genuine interest in sporting activities, which includes Little Athletics. He did not just only appear at the Knox Centre season Opening Ceremony, but has been sited quite a few times throughout the season at the Knox track. Peter has visited us up in the Grandstand as well as being invited to present some medals at the Knox Championship Day. On Wednesday 8th February 2006, MP Peter Lockwood made a speech in the Victorian Parliament about his visit to the washed out Knox Open Twilight and about Little Athletics in general. Our club, Bayswater Bullets got a mention along with Wantirna, Boronia Bolters and The Fields from the Knox Centre as well as some teams from the Ringwood Centre.

QUEENS BATON RELAY

The Queens Baton Relay came our way on the Labour Day Monday, 13th March 2006. Runner 102 was our Club President, former Olympian and dual Commonwealth Games Decathlete Dean Barton-Smith. Dean’s leg was from outside the Knox City Council Civic Centre and while the crowds were building up, the Salvation Army was playing and the Knox Mayor Cr David Cooper was handing out Knox City badges and pens out to the children.

The Queen’s Baton, which started out in London, travelled over land, sea and air on its epic journey to Melbourne for the 2006 Commonwealth Games.

This Queen’s Baton Relay is the world’s longest, most inclusive relay, travelling more than 180,000 kilometres and visiting all 71 nations of the Commonwealth in a year and one day.

Out of 300,000 nominations within Australia, only 3,000 runners were selected for the relay.

We set up our support at the end of his leg to get a full view of the procession of support vehicles and Motorcycle Police. There were many other groups in support too with Little Athletes from other Knox Clubs, Dean's Deaflympic team mates and Bayswater South Primary School students amongst some of the groups. There were quite a few former Bayswater Bullets athletes that came along too. It was certainly a great experience for all. What a crowd there was too, outside of the Knox City Offices and right up along Burwood Highway as far as you could see. The applause and cheering started a soon as Crimes Victim Support President Noel McNamara came around the corner to hand the Queens Baton to Dean and continued right up to the handing of the Queens Baton over to Shaun Panayi, the 1986 Edinburgh Commonwealth Games Diving Gold Medallist. The best part for us was when we came into view and upon Dean seeing all the orange within our group, punched his fist in the air yelling “BULLETS !!!” It made a great start to the 2006 Commonwealth Games.

New for Season 2006/07 Onwards

“Best Club Person” Award For season 2006/07 onwards to recognise parent contribution outside of the Committee, we will be introducing a “Best Club Person” Award for the person who most helps out the club throughout the season, probably in the form of a Plaque. Instances of helping out will be noted throughout the season and will be analysed and voted on by all Committee Members at the final meeting before the AGM/Presentation Day. Some instances noted will be: - Pre-season "working bee" day attendance as Bayswater Bullets representative (the Saturday before Registration Day) - Bayswater Bullets representative for pre-season envelope filling for Knox Centre mail out (a weeknight which lasts around one hour) - Chief Official Duty (Duty rate is once every 2 weeks, rather than 3 – and you get a Chief Official Polo Top) - Doing all required Parent Duty dates assigned (including swapped dates when not convenient) - Extra duty beyond normal assigned roster ( ie such as when extra parents are required when called over the PA or volunteering on own accord. Must register with Chief of Officials first by the canteen) - Doing Canteen duty (one hour shifts) - Selling tickets on Raffle Day - at table or around ground - Donating items for Xmas Raffle and Cake Stall - Selling Fundraising Chocolate - Bayswater Bullets representative setting up equipment on Open Twilight (8:30am start ) - Bayswater Bullets representative setting up equipment on Knox Championship Day (6:00am start) - Knox Centre Executive Representative (Meeting last Monday of month, except December, including over winter (to support Cross Country) - BBQ Cook on Twilights - Helping out Assistant Team Manager with marking white board events called over the PA - Being the Newsletter Editor when not on Committee – 4 issues per season (Oct, Nov, Dec and Feb) - Bringing out the table, event board and club banner before events begin - Taking back the table, event board and club banner when events end - Writing up events on the whiteboard when called out so athletes do not miss events.

New for Season 2006/07 Onwards (Cont)

Personal Best (PB) results now carried over to the next season

From season 2006/07 onwards there will be a revamp on Personal Best performances. For events that are of the same distance, weight or height, an athlete’s Personal Best from the previous season will be carried over into the new season. Some of the other Knox Centre clubs are already been using this system to resist the temptation of athletes who may deliberately under perform early in the season and stagger their results to help boost their PB totals which defeats the Little Aths motto “be your best”. For a PB to be recorded, the athletes will have to better their true Personal Best performance to date. This means that a Personal Best can be recorded on the very first program day of the new season. The total of PB’s required for PB Medals has been adjusted to reflect this new system. There is still one medal awarded, issued at the AGM/Presentation Day at the end of the season. 10 PB points = PB Certificate 15 PB points = Bronze PB Medal 20 PB points = Silver PB Medal 25 PB points = Gold PB Medal Season Best (SB) During the Commonwealth Games, you would of heard of the term “Season’s Best” said many times about an athlete’s performance. This is where our system will be different to other clubs and allow recognition on the way of bettering your personal best performance. This is to recognise that at the start of a new season, it may take some fitness to get back to where they left off from the end of the previous season; a SB (Season Best) will be introduced. Before a SB is to be recorded, a result that is not a PB has to be established first. The next time the event is conducted, if the result is still not a PB, but betters the first result, then this would be your Season’s best (SB) performance. This is the concept used in all Senior Athletics competition. A SB’s would be worth 1/3 PB bonus point. You must have 3 SB’s to make a PB bonus point. New for Season 2006/07 Onwards (Cont)

Club Records At the moment, there is no recognition in our awards for point scoring when a club record has been broken. In season 2006/07 it has been decided by the current Committee that the following will apply when a Club Record has been broken for the first time in an event within the season. Subsequent records broken in the same event within the season will not apply. When a club record has been broken, age group points will be doubled. This is to be awarded in “Age Group” Awards only, not PB Medal Awards. Some examples are listed below: ie 3 in a age group - A club record will be 6 points (3 points for a win and 3 points for record) 2 in a age group - A club record will be 4 points (2 points for a win and 2 points for record) 1 in a age group - A club record will be 2 points (1 points for a win and 1 points for record)

The Overall Best awards are based on a traditional club formula, which does not include Regional and State Championships results due to the Under 7 and 8 age groups not being eligible to compete.

The Team Manager awards the RACV Travel Perpetual ‘Achievers’ Trophy to the athlete who puts in a consistent effort, and tries hard every week to achieve their Personal Best.

The Personal Best (PB) Medal Award is for those athletes who achieve over 18 PB's throughout the season. This is to recognise an athletes continued improvement throughout the season on there own times or distances. The PB Medal Award was first started from the 1996/97 season, where there is only one medal won, depending on the amount of PB's obtained. Everyone over 12 PB’s receive a PB Certificate.

A traditional Club formula passed on from previous Committees is used based on each athlete’s results for the season. This is to work out who are the Best Overall Boy and Runner Up and the Best Overall Girl and Runner Up in our Club. It is a combination of PB's, the "point system", age group rating and the number of athletes in the age group.

Points are scored throughout the season with a loading for PB's with allowances to both points scored and events. This is to even out the larger and smaller age groups. It is also to even out those in the older age groups with more event opportunities to compete against the younger groups with less events. The official club formula used is:

2005/06 Open Day Results

Open Days are a special day that some Centres conduct with an open invitation for athletes from other Centres to compete against their own athletes. It is like a mini Championships where medals are awarded to the first 3 placegetters and ribbons for 4th to 8th place. There are around 15 Open Days around the State including Relays and Multi-Events. These events are useful leading into the end of season Championships by having additional practice in your favourite events.

We had five athletes who competed in the 2005 Winter Cross Country season. The 2006 season started today and you are welcome to come down and compete on any day throughout the season. Josh Holdway won the 2nd Position Trophy in the 3000m Knox “Handicap Day” held on 28th May 2005 at Nortons Park. Annie Egan won a Knox Centre Cross Country Trophy as equal winner in the “Best in Age – Girls Under 7”. Championship results of our athletes are: Eastern Metropolitan Regional Championships - 19 th June 2005

The Cross Country season is between April and August and is held at different Parks and Reserves within the City of Knox. It is on each Saturday morning starting at 9:00am and the program takes around two hours with events rotated each week. Parent Duty is around 3 times a season.

Under 7 & 8 Girls & Boys 1000 metres

Under 9 & 10 Girls & Boys 1500 metres

Under 11 & 12 Girls & Boys 2000 metres

Under 13-15 & I/A Girls & Boys 3000 metres

For those that registered for the Summer Track and Field season, the Cross Country season is free and will keep you fit for the following season.

Bayswater Bullets Team Manager Donna Moore was a Commonwealth Games volunteer at the Netball and her husband Jim, a volunteer at the MCG for the athletics and Opening and Closing Ceremony. Jim's highlight was hi-fiving Lauren Jackson as the Australian Team was leaving the track in the Opening Ceremony
