Annual Quality Assurance Report of the IQAC

In pursuance of the NAAC‟s guidelines regarding the establishment of IQAC as a
post-accreditation measure in all accredited institutions, to ensure quality in the entire
operations of the institution, IQAC has been re-constituted. The team with its total
commitment towards the enhancement and sustenance of quality integrates itself with all the
departments and administration of the college keeping in view the vision and mission of our
college.

Part A
Action plan for the academic year 2010-2011
To foster a culture of professional development among faculty and sustain
academic excellence, faculty development programmes need to be focused upon.
To sensitize faculty with emerging trends and to enhance knowledge
seminars/conferences/workshops were organized.
To enhance the capabilities of post graduate students and research scholars to
appear for NET/SLET.
Regular coaching was given to desirous students for NET/SLET, since a pass in
SLET/NET will continue to be mandatory qualification to apply for the post of
Assistant Professors in colleges. The programme was funded by the UGC.
To improve their communication skills, spoken English classes to be offered to
the marginalized section of the students community.
To help students to communicate with much ease, spoken English classes were
conducted by the Department of English to the SC/ST/MBC, Minority and non
creamy layer students in the college. This programme was funded by the UGC.
To assist students in career planning and employment.
The student placement office continued to play a vital role by actively engaging in
disseminating information of job opportunities by arranging organizational visits in
our college and a number of students have been placed in the year 2010-2011.
To introduce new PG courses
To cater to the needs of the students, PG Course in Geography, and Botany and
research in Zoology are in the pipe line.

To provide platform for national integration and inter-religious forum.
To always enjoy peace, stability, prosperity and permanence the college offered a
platform to celebrate festivals of different states, thus developing an atmosphere of
national consciousness among the varied students.
To improve the quality of life of the marginalized through outreach programme
Our commitment to enhance the quality of life of the marginalized moved a step
forward with the adoption of a scheduled tribal village (Muttathuvaiyal). The
objective of the project is to increase the basic services which would ultimately lead
to a transformation in the social and economic life of the village.
To integrate appropriate techniques in Pedagogy.
A session was arranged for the faculty on the use of appropriate techniques in
pedagogy. It answered all the five “Wh” questions like what are appropriate goals?
What are appropriate contexts? What are appropriate methodologies and what are
appropriate assessments
To top it all priority to be given for human excellence.
The institution offered holistic education. It strove hard to maintain cutting edge
human development systems and learning programmes by a judicious combination of
love and commitment. The college delivered a few best practices in the campus this
year.
To empower educators and inspire learners.
To identify an impact on students, to make classroom more interactive, help students
comprehend easily what is being taught, to establish a transition from the traditional
talk and chalk method, Smart class room was established.

To ensure a coordinated development of higher education system in the college
by receiving assistance from the UGC and other funding agencies.
To hold a series of workshops, seminars both National and International, and
complete Major/Minor projects the college has attracted funds from the UGC to
significantly contribute to effective design and academic development of the college.
Thus the college ensures quality higher education for all stakeholders.
To provide a vision that will change the future of the country.
The college has established a programme to coach IAS aspirants who have a dream.
The training and coaching has motivated students with a positive approach in a
student friendly environment. This programme was also funded by the UGC.
The above mentioned plans have incorporated all the key aspects of the
institution. They have been successfully executed. At the end of the year a substantial
outcome was observed.

Part B
Activities reflecting the goals and objectives of the institution
In keeping with the objectives to empower women through higher education, the college
provides opportunities to nurture intellectual curiosity, to develop a holistic personality, to
instill social commitment and to provide national integration, thus moulding them into
women of substance to meet the challenges of the changing world.
Above all, the college strives to make the institution a centre of excellence in higher
education. To achieve its objective, the college with its significant educational history and
tremendous work culture has introduced a systematic approach, and innovative academic
exercises to enhance students‟ skill in their respective discipline, and ethical and moral
values. It has well planned community services sensitizing students to serve the marginalized
section of the society.
The activities of the institution towards achieving its goals and objectives focused on:
Creating new knowledge and acquiring new capabilities.
Producing intelligent human resources through challenging teaching, research and
extension activities.
Promoting health consciousness, physical fitness, ethics and human values.
Sustaining quality through continuous assessment.
Tapping all types of resources for scholarships and students aid fund.
Sensitizing students to the issues of society through extension and outreach
programmes.
Introducing innovative teaching methods and techniques of evaluation
Holding best practices to make the campus eco-friendly.

To cater to the diverse needs of the student‟ community the following new academic PG and
research programmes are in the pipeline. It is expected to admit students in PG courses in
Botany and Geography and Ph.D programmes in Zoology in the next academic year 2011-
2012.

To enhance quality in the functioning of the office of the Controller of Examinations
the following reforms have been made.
An exhaustive Question Bank prepared by the faculty.
Online Examinations and Evaluations.
OMR sheets for the entry of CIA and ESE marks.
Students are provided with booklets for writing Internal and End Semester
Examinations.

7. Initiative towards Faculty development programme:
The institution with its ongoing quest for excellence offered a broad range of

Research Activities
The primary purpose is discovering, interpreting and developing methods and systems for the

18. COMMUNITY SERVICES
Community Services/ Extension Activities:
Community Service forms an integral part of the value system of our college. The idea that
“Each of us is a being in himself and a being in society, each of us need to understand
himself and understand others, take care of others and be taken care of himself” steers the
institution to extend service to humanity through NCC, NSS, YRC, RRC, RSP. The
institution has made it mandatory for the students to serve the community through any one of
the above-mentioned programmes. The college also has Extension programmes like
NECTAR, SNEHA POSITIVE FACES, STHRINIDI and the outreach programme, STEPUP.
This has been integrated in the curriculum for all UG courses.

In commemoration of “Geneva Convention Day”, the Indian Red Cross
Society, Coimbatore district conducted competitions on 27.8.2010 and

An orientation programme was organized for YRC volunteers on 8th

Mythili Muthukumar-III B.Com (R) and Nancy-III B.Sc Computer Science
donated one unit of blood at PSG Hospital for a Heart Surgery.
A one-day training programme on First Aid and Emergency Care was organized
for the YRC volunteers on 18.9.2010. Mr. Krishnamurthy, Honorary Secretary,
St. John‟s Ambulance, Tirupur District trained the volunteers.
Karunya Blood Donor‟s Association conducted a programme for YRC volunteers
on 20.1.2011. Dr. B. Mohammed Ali District programme manager, AIDS
Prevention and Control Unit addressed the gathering.
Two students participated in a One-day district level student camp on YRC
activities on 10.02.2011 at Sri Krishna Arts and Science College, Coimbatore.
Commemorating the World Youth Red Cross Day, a meeting was held for the
YRC volunteers on 15th

YRC volunteers have actively participated in a survey on D.E.A.F (Detection of

RRC (Red Ribbon Club)
RRC of the institution is functioning with 50 volunteers. The following activities were

Road Safety Patrol-Activities for the year 2010-2011
To sensitize students to road safety the college has a focused, comprehensive, well
planned and multi-dimensional programme. To ensure an effective and sustainable
programme, the college offers a strong support to the volunteers of the Road Safety
programme. To highlight, some of the activities are:
The first meeting of the Road Safety Patrol was held on 20.09.2010. Mr. N.
Kennedy, Deputy Chief, Traffic Warden Organization spoke on the
importance of Traffic Rules. The students were given training on awareness
and usage of traffic symbols.
The RSP cadets participated in Youth Yuva 2010 and conducted Friendly Five
Competitions for the public at Suguna Kalyana Mandapam, Coimbatore on
26.9.2010.

In connection with Dr. Abdul Kalam‟s Birthday, the cadets attended the
programme on the „Structure of India Map‟ on 16.10.2010 at PRS Grounds,
Coimbatore.
The cadets conducted and participated in the programme on „Ananda Salai-
Vibathilla Kovai‟-the largest Road Safety Campaign from 2.12.2010 to
4.12.2010 at VOC Grounds, Coimbatore.
In connection with the celebration of Road Safety Awareness Week, the
students attended Road Safety Awareness Programme on 5.1.2011 at
Government Hospital Premises, Coimbatore.
The RSP organized a programme on “First Aid” and “Road Safety Patrol”
arranged jointly with ALERT, for the students and faculty of the college. Dr.
Sylendra Babu, IPS, Commissioner of Police was chief speaker.
In addition, volunteers of the RSP assist in regulating traffic outside and
parking within the campus on all working days.
Extension Activity
NECTAR-Nirmala Elevates Community Through All Resources- Service to Humanity is
Service to God Himself. 300 volunteers of NECTAR from various departments were
involved in Extension activities in Dr. Ambedkar Govt. Hostel, Kasturibha Oral School for
Hearing Impaired (KOSHI) and Saranalaya Orphanage and in Community Services in
Mother Teresa Home for the Destitute, and Marialaya Orphanage. Activities were also
carried out in collaboration with RHYTHEM.
Extension activity included educational and moral value activities such as imparting
education and multi skill development activities. Under Community services Counseling,
General Medical checkups, etc were carried out.

Regular coaching classes were conducted for the school children especially in
English, Mathematics and Biology.
Moral values and etiquettes were highlighted.
Periodical evaluation of student learning ability through conducting oral tests.
2. Kasturibha Oral School for Hearing Impaired (KOSHI)
Stress and Intonation exercises were given by our students to the hearing
impaired children of the school.
Picture drawings, Maps, Charts and Models were prepared by our students and
used in demonstration classes to help in object recognition and vocal-related
exercises.
On important days like Independence Day, Christmas and Diwali, festival
cultural events and competitions were conducted and sweets and prizes
distributed to the children.
3. Saranalaya Orphanage
Special coaching classes were conducted for the children who were weak in
specified subjects.
The children were taught fundamentals of English Grammar and basics of Indian
and World History. Basic examination skills were also imparted to them.
The student volunteers were divided into groups and taken to Gandhipuram,
Sivananda Colony, Podanur and Sundarapuram for conducting surveys on
medical shops and Ration shops.
STHREE NEEDHI
A legal aid clinic creates awareness on human and women‟s rights. Meetings were arranged
with the participation of eminent judges, family court counselors, lawyers and members of
human right council for students and members of SHG‟s on the following topics.

SNEHA POSITIVE FACES
As part of our quality improvement program, SNEHA community services is engaged in
providing the very best services possible. The commitment is a vital part in the delivery of
services. Individual attention is given to Aids patients to ensure access to benefits and
medical care.
A Sneha Positive Faces is an exclusive social service organization of Nirmala College. It
extends commendable guidance, awareness and help to AIDS patients.
The Department of Business Management assisted Sneha Positive activities and
served the people fighting against HIV. Around 550 patients are benefited.
Every first Sunday of the month, two doctors would come and give free checkup
and consultation.
Students volunteered by helping in packing the medicines, serving them food,
distributing Soya bean packets, oil and soaps.
On 5th
November 2010, the staff along with the students celebrated Diwali with the
members, with a view to establish a sense of belonging. On the festival of Diwali,
the well wishers of Sneha Positive Faces, pharmaceutical companies and the staff
and students of the Department of Business Management provided new clothes for
all the patients, and helped in organizing the Diwali celebrations.
All Indian Catholic University Federation (AICUF)
All Indian Catholic University Federation (AICUF) was inaugurated on September
13th
2010 by Rev. Fr. Stephen, Coordinator, AICUF, State. He gave a brief outline
of the history, its aim and its motto.
Second Thursday of every month AICUF meeting was conducted within the
college premises. All social issues were discussed by the students.

the Head Quarters of AICUF. Students represented our college and participated in
group song, solo dance and mime.

STEPUP (OUT REACH PROGRAMME)
The prime objective of this Out-Reach Programme, STEPUP is to gain an acceptable
standard of good health and life among the people of the village Muttathuvayal.
A village called Muttathuvayal in Seemedu, Coimbatore is adopted for the out
reach programme STEPUP (Scheduled Tribe Empowerment Programme and
Upliftment Project) under extension activity started in the year 2011. A
programme schedule is prepared involving all the departments and the activity is
allotted to each department of the college.
Department of Botany
The Department of Botany conducted an out-reach programme, which is basically
targeted the welfare of the women in the Scheduled tribe community. This
programme addressed the need for women to start self employment like mushroom
cultivation and marketing of mushrooms was conducted on 5th
February 2011.
Department of Zoology
As a part of the out reach programme, the department of Zoology conducted a
training programme on vermicompost on 19th
February 2011 for the welfare of the
farmers in and around the village.
Department of Mathematics
The Department of Mathematics conducted an out reach programme of teaching
basic mathematics to the Scheduled tribe students present in and around the village
on 26th
February 2011.

Organized programmes to make the students more socially sensitive. The department
organized visits to orphanages and old age homes.
The students have donated cement bags, bricks, a swing for a school, and a mixer,
to the NSS camp.
The alumni of the department also contribute towards the social oriented
programme organized by the department. (e.g.) For the Diwali celebrations
organized for the AIDS patients of Sneha Positive Faces our old students
contributed Rs. 4000 towards food expenses.

Dr. (Sr.) Dona Grace Jeyaseeli, Department of Geography organized orientation
programme for 75 farmers on “Organic Farming” at Paduvampalli village during
the annual NSS camp of the college during 2008-09. As a follow up those
farmers were taken to organic farm at Sathyamangalam.

Conducted a jumble sale together with the Vasantha Memorial Trust to benefit
victims of cancer at GKNM Hospital, Coimbatore.

Parents, as stakeholders, are recognized as an integral support system of the
institution:
All the departments conducted PTA meetings twice during the year 2010-11.
Parents were briefed on the scope of the subject, facilities available in the
institution and the department, curriculum, skill based subjects, and
scholarships available.
All the staff members interacted with their respective ward‟s parents and
briefed them about their strengths and weakness. The marks obtained by the
students in the two internal tests and the attendance were shown to the parents.
Specific problems of the wards with regard to their health, home sickness, lack
of attendance, commuting to college and other personal problems were
discussed with the parents.
The Department of Chemistry rewarded outstanding outgoing students with
cash prizes at the PTA meeting.
It was brought to the notice of the parents that students‟ participation and
achievements in extra curricular activities are encouraged and duly appreciated.
Feed back from parents regarding various aspects were collected and
documented.
The feedback was largely positive.

and 5th
March 2011.
Sports Day was conducted on 22.1.2011.
The college team won the I place in Junior National Volley Ball Tournament,
Chennai.
Won the II Place in the South Zone Ball Badminton Tournament Dindivanam.
This year 14 players represented Nationals and 25 players represented All India Inter
University.
Our college has won Bharathiar University Over-All-Championship for Sports and
Games for the year 2009-2010. The college has retained this Over All Championship
continuously for the past 20 years.

Divya D has been awarded Rs. 5,00,000 by Sports Development Authority of Tamil
Nadu for winning gold medal in Asian Power Lifting Championship at Mangolia.

38. Development Programmes for Non-Teaching Staff:
An orientation programme was conducted for the non-teaching staff by Fr.
Lawrence, Good Shepherd Seminary, Coimbatore on 16.10.2010.
It is the policy of the management to allow non-teaching staff to serve in
various offices/ departments and posts on a rotational basis, as a thrust
towards multi-skill enhancement.

To create awareness in the right of enfranchisement among the public, a
