Annexure I

BEST PRACTICES IN THE COLLEGE No. 1

1. Title of the Practice Tree Plantation in collaboration with Forest Department:

2. Goal

a. To develop the social responsibility of protection and conservation of trees

b. To develop scientific temper among the students

c. To know the impact of deforestation.

d. To understand societal useful knowledge for its development.

e. To develop co-operation between student community and Department of Forest.

3. The Context

About 30 years back Alnavar and its surrounding area was famous for teak wood. Due to

the growing demand for the wood deforestation was the order of theday. The Sub Division

of Forest Dept. of Haliyal Taluk has made up its mind toinvolve student community in tree

plantation in the area. Hence the college andDepartment of Forest signed MOU to create a

green belt around the college. In thisconnection two special lectures were conducted to

inform the students about the MOUand importance of Forest in the present scenario. Thus

the concept of socialforestation took a momentum in the campus. About 200 plants are

planted in thecampus and they also agreed to develop a teak plantation near the college. The

shortage of rainfall hindered the project. The interest of the officers of the Departmentto

involve the student to create awareness about the topic is highly commendable. The social

forestation may also inspire the student to set up such plantation in their villages.

4. The Practice

There is sufficient space is available for the plantation. Hence the surrounding area of the

college is selected for the plantation and planted the trees. It is fenced with barbed wire.

Each class is assigned group of trees for watering. Occasionally they are making cleaning

planted area. Now the trees are grown up to 10 feet height. Steps will be taken to involve

the student in social forest work under the supervision of Forest Officer Shri Ashokumar of

Mangalawad Sub Division. Majority of the students are from agriculture background hence

they decided to take the help of the Department to seek advice and assistance for setting up

of green belt in their villages.

5. Evidence of Success

Page 28: ANNUAL QUALITY ASSURANCE REPORT 2016-17 · government first grade college, alnavar 581 103, dharwad dist. karnataka naac grade accredited with b+ (second cycle) annual quality assurance

28

The present tree plantation unit in the campus and near the college is the proof of success.

The students and faculties’ interest are noteworthy in making the campus beautiful.

Students are coming with new ideas to create the additional floriculture.

6. Problems Encountered and Resources Required

Shortage of water and protection of trees are the major problems encountered in the process

of tree plantation. Students realized the required fertility of the soil to grow the tree. Hence

providing fertilizer in social forestation is essential. So for fencing and for guarding it

require resources depending upon the extent of the plantation.

Best Practice No. 02

1. Title of the Practice Conducted National Conference in History & Special Lectures

2. Goal

a. To develop the notion of enquiry among the students

b. To develop scientific temper among the students

c. To know the various socio-economic issues

d. To understand societal useful knowledge for its development.

e. To develop co-operation between student community and the society .

f. To develop analytical skills for data collection/experimentation and analysis

3. The Context

The students of rural area are not exposed either good library or additional knowledge of the

subject at under graduate level. They acquire limited knowledge only in class rooms. They

could not get opportunity to develop scientific temper. Hence it is essential to teach them

collection of primary or secondary information from different means. Conducting interview,

conducting survey, visiting the industry, historical places will help them to build confidence

among the students to face the challenges. It also develops social contacts to them. The

involvement of student in identifying the problem, collecting information and analyzing the

Page 29: ANNUAL QUALITY ASSURANCE REPORT 2016-17 · government first grade college, alnavar 581 103, dharwad dist. karnataka naac grade accredited with b+ (second cycle) annual quality assurance

29

data develops creativity among the students. Thus imparting education will make the

education more meaningful and interesting as it involves the study of his region. Hence it is

made mandatory for the final year students.

4. The Practice

The college has good number of Ph.D. and M.Phil. degree holders. Hence they have

sufficient knowledge of research activity and methodology. The areas of research problems

are identified specially from the surrounding area. Students are divided into groups. They

are trained in research methodology. They are well informed about the problem to be

studies and its social significance. In this way it was asked to prepare a suitable method of

research (i.e. collection of date/ conducting interview/ visiting the historical places/

industry/ farm houses to get information). Then the collected information will be examined

by the faculty and suitable guidance will be given to prepare the research project. This

practice develops community living and sense of co-operation among the students. This

also enabled the students to develop scientific approach and has enhanced

5. Evidence of Success

The students who are aware of issues now studied in scientific manner and realize that how

a subject can be viewed from a researcher. Students learn themselves the independent work

culture, interpretation of the data collected and arrive to the conclusion on the subject.

Students under the guidance of| faculty create a new piece of knowledge and feel proud

about is contribution. Thus research at U.G. level develops more interest among the students

and encourages his confidence towards higher education. The notion of learning process

will be improved considerably.

6. Problems Encountered and Resources Required

Students are under the impression that research means collecting the information from the

available secondary sources. Now they realize that collecting the primary information is a

challenging job. It requires patience and interprets it in scientific manner. They come across

the knowledge of different languages, skills of research, knowledge of social background

are essential for a researcher. Economically it is not a difficult problem for the students. But

the agrarian culture and economic condition of the students will not boost interest among

the students to undertake such adventure to spend certain amount of money to gain

knowledge.

7. Notes (Optional)

This practice is excellent especially for the UG students where they cannot get opportunity

to study the subject beyond the class room and library. Students realize that Research

methodology is different from subject to subject. The research projects deposited in the

library will definitely enrich the depository.
