Annual Progress Report (APR) of IQAC All Universities/Institutions shall submit the APR to NAAC in the end of

every academic year with emphasis on the following key areas:

Name of the Institution: Farook College Year of Report: 2004-05

Part A: What is the plan of action chalked out by the IQAC in the beginning of the year towards quality enhancement and what is the outcome by the end of the year?

In keeping with the overall aim of the establishment of the college we will take forward its agenda of academic excellence in terms of human resource mobilisation and research activities. This will contribute to (i) sustained growth of all parameters (ii) identification of new areas for development and (iii) partial fulfilment of the objectives set by stake-holders.

The IQAC of Farook College envisages the overall development of the College, Faculty, Students, Non-teaching Staff and the Infrastructure. The changing scenario of Higher Education calls for new academic programmes, innovative curricular designs and inter-disciplinary programmes and there is an emergent need to equip the faculty and students to meet the challenges of the academic world through properly motivated research programmes, projects and curricular planning. This also necessitates accessing the latest vistas of knowledge dissemination and updating the technological and infrastructural facilities. The main objectives of IQAC for this year have been

(i) To motivate the faculty to pursue Research in their areas of specialisation and to acquire Ph.D. in the current plan so as to make the Departments eligible and equipped for PG/Research grants.

(ii) To effectively implement the projects and programmes under CPE for the benefit of the students, faculty and society

(iii) To equip the faculty for the use of IT enabled techniques for teaching/ learning process.

(iv) To give attention to inter-disciplinary activities that are useful to the academic world and society at large.

As part of the drive to effectively achieve these objectives 22 members are actively pursuing research either under FIP of UGC or otherwise. Three teachers have been awarded Ph.D. this year. The Departments of Arabic, Statistics, Chemistry and Zoology have completed the first phase of their CPE Project. The Departments of Statistics and Physics have started use of IT enabled techniques for teaching/learning process through the Statistical Computing Lab and Virtual Lab respectively. The Departments of Chemistry

and Zoology are in the process of acquiring adequate software and training. Attempts have also been made to initiate Inter-disciplinary programmes by the Departments of Statistics and Economics. Part B: 1. Activities reflecting the goals and objectives of the institution: Farook College, one of the biggest post-graduate colleges in the State of Kerala, embodies the achievements of the systematic efforts made by a historically backward and unmotivated segment of society to rip open the confines of social stagnation and emerge into educational and cultural resurgence. The College was established as a result of the pioneering efforts of the Muslims of Kerala and was primarily meant for the educational advancement of the Moplah community, which then was averse to modern education. The institution is cosmopolitan in outlook and is devoted to the service of society by imparting knowledge and promoting a cultural consciousness and an awareness of human heritage. Its ambition is the all-round development of every student that enters its portals. The college strives to help every student:

• to understand himself/herself and discover his/her latent capacities

• to understand his/her position as a member of human society and of the physical universe

• to think clearly and critically and communicate effectively

• to learn how to make practical application of knowledge, attitudes and skills

• to develop a sense of unity of all knowledge including religious vision.

It maintains an atmosphere conducive to the free development of social and religious aspirations and inner life. With these objectives in view, various schemes are put into operation and activities of intellectual, physical and cultural values are organized. To facilitate fuller realization of the objectives, it has been conceived as a residential institution. The hostels are expected to play a very important role in the all-round development of the students. The College is affiliated to the University of Calicut and admission is open to all, irrespective of creed, sex and religion. It offers courses in 14 disciplines at

Page 3: Annual Progress Report (APR) of IQAC...study of Hidayathul Muslimeen Sabha Manjeri” (Minor Research Project sanctioned by UGC to Dr. T. Muhammedali) (ii) “Rise and Growth of Farooqabad:

the undergraduate level and in 11 disciplines at the post graduate level and 5 departments have research centres. The residential character of the campus has been manifested through 4 blocks of hostels for boys and 4 for girls and 20 quarters for the staff of the college. As a complement to its commitment to the basic academic objectives the College also tries to give adequate attention to the development of the overall potential of the student community by providing facilities for co-curricular activities. The extension activities of the college are operated through conventional forms of organizations of the college as well as innovative initiative. 2. New Academic programmes initiated (UG & PG):

The following Academic Programmes were started during the academic year (i) B.Com. and M.Com. Courses under IGNOU. (ii) C.A. Foundation Course.

3. Innovations in curricular design and transaction:

Curricular design is entirely within the jurisdiction of the University, and affiliated colleges have only a limited role in it. However, within these limitations we have tried to introduce and experiment with new approaches and programmes. The University has introduced Internal Assessment for Undergraduate courses apart form those for P.G. Courses, and as part of this students have to undertake several projects and assignments. The syllabus for B.Sc. in Applied Statistics with Computer Application and Actuarial Science has been modified by the University in accordance with our views and suggestions. Final year students are now required to do a project with special emphasis on model designing, analysis and computational aspects. The Statistics Department is also providing additional training for developing logical reasoning and language skills. The Head of the Department of Arabic, in his capacity as Chairman of the Board of Studies (P.G.) organised a workshop to restructure the M.A. (Arabic) Semester Post-graduate syllabus on 21 and 22 March 2005. The Department of Library and Information Science has modified the curriculum with adequate content on the application of library software for the automation of in-house Library operations and

Page 4: Annual Progress Report (APR) of IQAC...study of Hidayathul Muslimeen Sabha Manjeri” (Minor Research Project sanctioned by UGC to Dr. T. Muhammedali) (ii) “Rise and Growth of Farooqabad:

application of Information Technology in Library management and administration. The Department has taken major steps to revamp the structure and curriculum of the courses offered. An innovative programme of two year integrated Master’s Degree course in Library and Information Science (M.L.I.Sc.) is proposed to be introduced from the next academic year on the pattern of the UGC model curriculum.

In the Department of Physics, with the Commissioning of the Virtual Lab, software interface is used for the speedy and accurate measurements of Physical parameters. This has improved the accuracy of certain experiments.

4. Inter-disciplinary programmes started:

The Statistics Department has initiated discussions for starting programmes with other disciplines like bio-statistics and related medical fields. The department has also submitted a proposal to UGC, under innovative programme to start M.Sc. course in Actuarial Science and Financial Engineering. The Department of Economics conducted a State Level Workshop on Mathematics for Economics Teaching with UGC support and prepared a Handbook for UG teachers.

5. Examination reforms implemented:

Departments have less flexibility in examination reforms due to the present affiliation system. However for internal assessment all the Departments have adopted continuous assessment of the students by means of (i) Assignments (ii) Seminars and (iii) Unit Tests and examinations.

In view of the fact that concentrated efforts are needed to tap the potentials of alternative methods of knowledge delivery through IT based self-learning and Internet-based courses and given the huge number of young students that will quest for all levels of higher education and a severe shortage of qualified instructors, and given India’s outstanding expertise in the IT industry, there is a need to embark on a massive programme of using the multi-media and web-based systems in the learning process. Keeping this in view the college proposes to embark on the mission to equip the students and faculty for such a venture.

The major concerns of the College for the next year are

(i) To achieve optimal implementation of the Projects and Programmes under CPE

(ii) To promote IT enabled teaching among the faculty of all the Departments through Computing Centres and Virtual Lab

(iii) To explore areas of Inter-disciplinary programmes that would prove effective in the academic world and also beneficial to society

(iv) To motivate the faculty to involve themselves in Minor and Major Research in their specialised areas and also provide relevant information about sources of grant-in-aid available in and outside the country from time to time.

(v) To set up a complete network backbone in the Campus, to avail either the broadband or leased line facility for fast Internet access, for Library automation, for INFLIBNET service of the UGC and on-line library system.
