INTRODUCTION Schools of public health have been educating professionals in the techniques of health preservation and disease
prevention and control since the first decades of the twentieth century. Some schools of public health had their
beginnings in university schools of medicine; others were conceived from the outset as autonomous units within their
parent institutions. In fall 2011, there were 49 accredited schools of public health in the United States, at 11 private and
38 public universities.
Unlike other health profession schools which emphasize a specific clinical discipline (for example medicine or nursing),
schools of public health educate a wide range of professionals, from biostatisticians and epidemiologists to health
administrators, community health educators and specialists in areas such as managed care, environmental sciences,
international health and the behavioral and social sciences.
The Association of Schools of Public Health (ASPH) is the only national organization representing the deans, faculty, and
students of the 49 accredited schools of public health in the United States, Puerto Rico, and Mexico. The schools educate
over 28,000 students annually from every state in the U.S. and most countries throughout the world. The schools of
public health are the primary educational system that trains personnel needed to operate public health, disease
prevention and health promotion programs in the United States. ASPH's principal purpose is to promote and improve the
education and training of professional public health personnel.
ASPH collects and compiles aggregate data on applications, acceptances, new enrollments, students, and graduates in
each school of public health. The information collected serves the schools and various federal, state and local agencies
and private institutions in planning and implementing their respective public health training, research and service
activities.
ASPH thanks the deans, faculty and staff of the schools of public health who made this data report possible. In
particular, we thank Dean Craig Blakely (Texas A&M), chair, and the members of the ASPH Data Advisory Committee.

The classification system for program areas was developed by the ASPH Data Advisory Committee in 1978 and has been
used since the 1979-80 academic year. The system undergoes periodic review and revision by the Committee, with the
approval of other appropriate committees and/or councils. Beginning in 2009, ‘General’ was added as a new program
area.
Under the ASPH data collection system, the schools report their applications, acceptances, new enrollments, students,
and graduates by the program area categories described above. Categorization is not always precise and there is some
variance each year due to reclassification. In addition, a number of schools have program areas that include two or more
of the ASPH categories. Finally, program areas within the schools are reorganized from time to time, with the result that
two or more areas that were once separate in the ASPH classification system are later reported as a combined area. For
these reasons, the data on program area should be viewed with caution.
Lastly, a number of schools allow multiple specializations. Applications, acceptances, new enrollments, students, and
graduates with dual specializations are recorded as ‘.5’ in each area and triple specializations are recorded as ‘.3’ in each
area. However, all numbers included in this report are rounded to a whole number.

HIGHLIGHTS AND TRENDS
In 2011, 49 accredited schools of public health existed in the United States, up from 23 accredited schools of public
health in 1991. The highlights and trends in this report represent the data collected from these schools, which are
accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH). Forty-nine ASPH member schools reported data for the
year 2011. ASPH collected data on applications, acceptances, and new enrollments for the calendar year – winter, spring,
summer, and fall semesters.
APPLICATIONS Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall 2011
ASPH collects data on applications rather than individuals. There is a centralized application service, SOPHAS, which has
been operational since 2007. However, because not all of our schools participate, SOPHAS data are not included in this
report.
In 2011, there were 52,101 applications submitted. Submissions from female applicants constituted 72 percent of total
applications and foreign nationals constituted 25 percent of total applications. [Tables 1.1 and 1.2]
Program areas with the highest number of applications were epidemiology (19 percent), health services administration
(19 percent), health education/behavioral sciences (16 percent), other (9 percent), and general (8 percent). [Table 1.7]
Degree objectives with the highest number of applications were MPH (58 percent), PhD (15 percent), and MS (8 percent).
[Table 1.6]
Of the total applications in 2011, 49 percent were accepted. New enrollments represented 45 percent of acceptances and
22 percent of applications. [Table 1.10]
Acceptance rates were higher for females (50 percent) than males (46 percent) and lower for foreign nationals (36
percent) than for U.S. citizens and permanent residents (53 percent). The program areas with the highest acceptance
rates were public health practice and program management with 68 percent and environmental health with a rate of 56
percent. The program areas with the lowest acceptance rate were biostatistics with a rate of 41 percent and other with a
rate of 36 percent. The degree objectives with the highest acceptance rates were joint degree (74 percent), MSPH (62
percent), and MPH (56 percent). [Table 1.11]

APPLICATION TRENDS 2001-2011 Since 2001, applications have increased from 20,247 to 52,101 and females have consistently applied to schools of public
health in greater numbers than males. Females submitted 69 percent of applications in 2001 and 72 percent of
applications in 2011. [Table 1.12]

NEW ENROLLMENTS Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall 2011 In 2011, there were 11,345 new enrollments representing 40 percent of the total fall enrollments in the schools. In 2010,
there were 11,205 new enrollments representing 43 percent of total enrollments. [Table 2.9]
The proportion of new female enrollments was 71 percent, while foreign students represented 15 percent of new
enrollments. [Tables 2.1 and 2.2]
In 2011, the program areas with the largest concentrations of new enrollments were health services administration (2,181
or 19 percent), health education/behavioral science (1,760 or 16 percent), epidemiology (1,730 or 15 percent) and
general public health studies (1,270 or 11 percent). [Table 2.6] The degree objectives with the largest concentrations
of new enrollments were MPH (6,802 or 60 percent), PhD (1,082 or 10 percent) and MS (993 or 9 percent). [Table 2.4]
Trends for schools of public health indicate that the percentage of new enrollments as a percentage of acceptances and
as a percentage of applications have been rather consistent, with a slight decrease in the past five years. [Table 2.9]

STUDENTS Fall 2011
There were 28,443 students enrolled in the schools in fall 2011, an 8 percent increase from last year (26,340). [Table
3.13] Of this total, 72 percent were female and 15 percent were foreign nationals. [Tables 3.1 and 3.2]
In 2011, over half of the students (51 percent) were enrolled in MPH programs and 74 percent of the students were
enrolled in master’s degree programs. The remaining 26 percent of the students were enrolled in doctoral degree
programs. [Table 3.6] A higher proportion of males (30 percent) pursue doctorates than females (25 percent), and a
higher proportion of foreign national students (40 percent) pursue doctorates than U.S. students (24 percent.) [Table
3.4]
There were some differences in program areas based on demographic characteristics. Females represented nearly three
times the percentage of males enrolled in nutrition (3 percent female vs. 1 percent male), more than double the
percentage of males enrolled in health education/behavioral sciences (18 percent female vs. 8 percent male) and four
times the percentage in maternal and child health (4 percent female vs. 1 percent male). Males represented a greater
percentage than females enrolled in biostatistics (11 percent male vs. 5 percent female) and environmental sciences (10
percent male vs. 7 percent female). Foreign nationals represented almost four times the percentage of U.S. citizens
enrolled in biostatistics (18 percent foreign nationals vs. 5 percent U.S. citizens) and over two times the percentage in
biomedical and laboratory sciences (5 percent foreign nationals vs. 2 percent U.S. citizens). U.S. citizens represented
more than double the percentage of foreign nationals enrolled in health education/behavioral sciences (16 percent U.S.
citizens vs. 7 percent foreign nationals). [Table 3.7]
Just over half (51 percent) of the students were enrolled in three program areas; health services administration (20
percent), epidemiology (17 percent), and health education/behavioral sciences (15 percent). [Table 3.9]
The program areas with the largest proportion of doctoral students were biostatistics (49 percent) and biomedical and
laboratory sciences (42 percent), followed by other (38 percent). [Table 3.10]
In 2011, 25 percent of the students were part-time. The proportion of part-time students varied greatly among the
schools, from 0 percent to 82 percent. [Table 3.12]
9
STUDENT TRENDS
2001-2011
In 2011, there were 28,443 students enrolled in the schools of public health and in 2001 there were 16,414 students
enrolled, a 73 percent increase. [Table 3.18]
In 2011, female students represented 72 percent of total enrollments. This representation has been constant over the
past decade, but the number of female enrollees has increased 82 percent since 2001 compared with a 54 percent
increase of male enrollees. In 2011, foreign nationals constituted 15 percent of the total student body, which is equal to
the percentage of the previous year. [Table 3.13]
With regard to degree objective, there has been very little change since 2001. In 2011, just over half (51 percent) of the
students were enrolled in MPH programs, 71 percent of enrolled students were in master’s degree programs, 26 percent
in doctoral degree programs, and 4 percent in a joint degree program. In 2001, 50 percent of the students were enrolled
in MPH programs, 72 percent were enrolled in master’s degree programs, 25 percent were enrolled in doctoral degree
programs, while the remaining 4 percent were enrolled in a joint degree program. [Table 3.16]
For the past ten years, the program areas that comprise the largest proportions of students (epidemiology, health
services administration, health education/behavioral sciences) have remained constant. [Table 3.17]

GRADUATES 2010-2011 There were 9,717 graduates in 2010-11, an 8 percent increase from 2009-10 (8,957). [Table 4.13] In 2010-11,
females represented 72 percent of total graduates and foreign nationals constituted 15 percent of total graduates.
[Tables 4.1 and 4.2] These percentages are consistent with total student enrollment.
In 2010-11, the MPH degree was awarded to 61 percent of the total degree recipients and 88 percent of total degree
recipients were awarded master’s degrees. Doctoral degrees were awarded to 1,183 individuals or 12 percent of the total
degree recipients. The highest proportion of doctoral degree recipients was awarded to the PhD (7 percent) followed by
other doctoral at 3 percent. [Table 4.6] Males received more doctoral degrees than females (13 percent for males vs.
11 percent for females), and a higher proportion of foreign nationals (15 percent) than U.S. citizens (12 percent) were
awarded doctoral degrees. [Table 4.4]
In 2010-11, 388 or 4 percent of graduates received a joint degree. The joint degree combination with the highest
concentration of graduates was the other joint master’s degree with 35 percent of all joint degree recipients, followed by
MPH/MD with 31 percent, and both the MPH/MBA and MPH/MSW at 11 percent. [Tables 4.8 and 4.9]
Overall, the program areas with the highest concentrations of graduates were health services administration (20 percent),
epidemiology (16 percent), health education/behavioral sciences (13 percent) and general (12 percent). [Table 4.12]
The program areas with the highest concentrations of doctoral degree recipients were other (29 percent), biomedical
sciences (23 percent), and biostatistics (22 percent). [Table 4.7]

GRADUATE TRENDS
2000-2011
In 2010-11, there were 9,717 graduates from the schools of public health, a 69 percent increase from 2000-01 (5,747
graduates). In 2000-01, female graduates totaled 3,867 or 67 percent compared with 7,006 or 72 percent in 2010-11.
Female graduates have increased 81 percent since 2000-01, compared with a 44 percent increase in male graduates.
U.S. graduates have increased by 72 percent compared with a 62 percent increase in foreign national graduates. [Table
4.13]
Since 2000-01, the proportion of graduates with prior MD degrees has decreased from 14 percent to 7 percent in 2010-
11. In 2010-11, U.S. citizens comprised 64 percent of graduates with prior MD degrees and foreign nationals comprised
36 percent. [Table 4.15]
The MPH has remained the most commonly awarded degree over the past decade. It accounted for 61 percent of the
total degrees awarded in 2010-11. The MS degree represented 9 percent of total degrees; MHA/MHSA degree
represented 6 percent of total degrees; and the MSPH degree at 1 percent of total degrees. Since 2000-01, proportions
of degrees awarded have been mostly constant. [Table 4.16]
