CHAIRMAN’S WELCOMEDear Colleagues

Welcome to Brighton and the 2013 BSA Heads Conference. I hope you will have time during your stay to enjoy The Grand and the delights Brighton has to offer.

The theme of this year’s Conference is ‘Dare to Be Different’. This theme hints, without subtlety, at the need to be able to adapt and change as well as to cling firmly to core beliefs and values. We do live in those “interesting times” so oft threatened and the sheer volume of information and noise thrown at us all in these times necessitates a need for steadiness on the one hand and a preparedness to pre-empt and innovate, not just to react, on the other. I am thrilled by our programme of speakers who will, I trust inform, engage and inspire in equal measure.

The most crucial aspect of the conference is the time and space it gives for us all to meet and talk and share our own varied experiences, and, indeed, those core values, given the collegiate and supportive nature of the Boarding Schools’ Association. Those Associations will have the chance to meet on the Wednesday morning to discuss matters of mutual interest and to report back at the AGM on the Wednesday afternoon.

Let us all hope that we shall find winter has at long last passed and that we are all bathed in a regenerative warmth on the south coast!

RICHARD WATSON Founder, What’s Next

Richard Watson is a writer, speaker and scenario planner. He is the founder of nowandnext.com, a website that documents global trends, and is a founding partner of Futures House Europe, a specialist scenario planning consultancy.

Richard is the author of five books including Future Minds: How the Digital Age is Changing Our Minds, Why This Matters and What We Can Do About It.

Richard has worked with, amongst others; Department of Education, Teaching Australia, London Business School, General Electric, IBM, KPMG and Virgin.

WOL KOLADE Managing Partner, ISIS Equity Partners

Wol joined ISIS in January 1993 and is Managing Partner of the business. His role encompasses overall responsibility for the strategic development of ISIS, and active involvement in investments. Wol initially trained as an

engineer, having studied civil and structural engineering at Kings College, London. After obtaining an MBA from Exeter University, he spent three years with Barclays in various head office roles before joining ISIS.

Wol was previously a Chairman of the BVCA - British Private Equity and Venture Capital Association - in 2007/2008, a Council Member from 2002 - 2009 and Chairman of the Responsible Investment Advisory Board from 2009 - 2010. He is a Governor and Former Council Member of the London School of Economics and Political Science and a former non-executive Director of Social Finance.

Wol is a Trustee of the Guys and St Thomas’ Charity. It is the second largest medical charity in the UK and awards grants to facilitate improvements to healthcare services in the London Boroughs of Lambeth and Southwark.

JOHN BAUGH Headmaster, The Dragon School

Born in Kampala, Uganda, John started boarding at the age of six whilst still living in Uganda. He remembers being blissfully happy at the small primary school in the hills of Kabale. He then became a proud member of the BOAC Junior Jet Club

at the age of seven and quickly clocked up 300,000 miles between England and Uganda – and then Botswana.

John was then educated (“they did their best”) at Aldenham School and St. Luke’s, Exeter and played professional football “before deciding to do a proper job”. He previously taught geography at Haileybury before becoming Headmaster of Solefield School, Sevenoaks (1986-1997) - this made him the youngest prep school head in the country. He then moved on to Edge Grove, Hertfordshire (1997-2002) and finally the Dragon in 2002. Although he admits to not being very good at sitting still for long periods, John has sat on several IAPS committees and has been Chairman of the Boarding Schools’ Association.

MARK JOHNSON Headmaster, Cheam School

Mark Johnson was educated at Exeter School and graduated with an Honours Degree from Exeter University. His entire career since then has been spent in the prep boarding school environment. He taught Maths and German for seventeen years at Summer Fields,

Oxford, was Master i/c Rugby and spent the latter five years as the Deputy Headmaster and House Master before his appointment to Cheam as Headmaster in 1998. Whilst at Cheam he has overseen the transformation of the school from a single sex, fully boarding traditional prep school with some 120 boys, into a thriving co-educational, day and boarding school with some 400 children aged 3-13. He has also driven forwards a £10 million building plan with the most recent acquisition being a £3 million Art & Design Centre.

NIALL FITZGERALD KBE Chair of the British Museum, former CEO of Unilever and Chair of Reuters

Prior to this he was Chairman and CEO of Unilever from 1996 - 2004.

Mr FitzGerald joined the boards of Unilever plc and Unilever NV in 1987 and served respectively as Finance Director, Foods Director and

Detergents Director until his appointment as Chairman and CEO in 1996. During his Unilever career, he worked and lived in Ireland, the Netherlands, South Africa, the USA and the UK.

In November 2008 Niall FitzGerald was appointed Chairman of Hakluyt & Co. and in 2006 he was appointed Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the British Museum. This year Mr FitzGerald has also been appointed Chairman of the Munster Rugby Commercial Board and the Leverhulme Trust and is a Senior Advisor to Allen & Co.

Mr. FitzGerald was a member of the World Economic Forum Foundation Board (2001-2011) and the Spencer Stuart Advisory Board (2004-2011). He has been co-Chair of the Investment Climate Facility for Africa (2006-2010), Chairman of the Nelson Mandela Legacy Trust (UK) (2004-2008), the International Business Council (2006-2008) and of The Conference Board (2003-2005), and co-Chairman of the Transatlantic Business Dialogue (TABD) (2004-2005). He has been Non-Executive Director of Merck (2000-2003), Ericsson (2000-2002), Bank of Ireland (1990-1999) and the Prudential Corporation (1992-1999). He has been President of the Advertising Association (2000-2005).

He has also been a member of South Africa’s International Investment Advisory Council, a member of the International Advisory Board of the Council on Foreign Relations, a member of the Kok Commission on the Lisbon Agenda, a member of the Accounting Standards Review Committee, Chairman of the CBI Europe Committee and member of the International Policy Council for Agriculture and Trade.

Mr FitzGerald was awarded an honorary Knight Commander of the British Empire in 2002, and holds a number of honorary doctorates from American, British and Irish universities. He has also been the recipient of numerous other awards for his work on global business issues, including the Society of Chemical Industry Centenary Medal (2004); Royal Dublin Society Gold Medal for Industry (2006); Woodrow Wilson Award for Corporate Citizenship (2008); Perlmutter Award for Excellence in Global Business Leadership (2011).

Niall is married to Ingrid and they have an 9-year old daughter; Gabriella. He has 3 children; Tara, Colin and Aaron from a previous marriage. He lists amongst his interests Music (opera and jazz), Irish Rugby, supporting Manchester United, running (slowly), playing golf (poorly), creating an exotic garden in Sussex and observing humanity.

JOHN VINCENT Founder and CEO Leon Restaurant

John Vincent is leading the development of the School Food Plan with Henry Dimbleby. John co founded Leon with Henry, and prior to that John worked as a strategy consultant at Bain and Company and

at Procter and Gamble. At Leon, John is responsible for food, brand and operations. John also has other investments in related food and drink businesses, including an Ethiopian brewery and a new concept called Flatplanet. John is committed to providing ‘good food for the planet’.

DICK DAVISON Head of Research,mtmconsultanting

Dick Davison joined mtmconsulting in 2005 after 16 years experience at the heart of the independent school sector, and now divides his time between leading mtm’s strategic services for schools and consultancy and

editorial services for the BSA and HMC.

He was Director of Communications for the ISC and had similar responsibilities, though with different titles, for its predecessor bodies, National ISIS and ISCis. Educated at Dame Allan’s School and (as a boarder) at Barnard Castle School and Emmanuel College, Cambridge, he worked as a journalist in the North East and London before joining the press office of the Inner London Education Authority, becoming its Chief Press Officer. He also worked for the Open University before joining ISIS in 1989. He is still an occasional freelance journalist, a governor of two independent schools and a trustee of the National Youth String Orchestra.

He is now in his 25th consecutive year of working with and for the BSA.

ED SMITH Author of Luck - a Fresh Look at Fortune, columnist for The Times and The New Statesman, former professional cricketer

Ed was educated at Tonbridge School where he was in the day house Welldon House and his father novelist Jonathan Smith taught English for most of his career. Ed went on to Peterhouse, Cambridge to read history and earned

full blues playing for the university cricket team. He scored a century on his first-class debut for Cambridge University Cricket Club in 1996 and graduated with a double first despite devoting much of his time to cricket.

He went on to play three home Test matches for England versus South Africa in 2003. He was a tall right-handed batsman with a penchant for the drive and represented England, Cambridge University, Kent and Middlesex.

Ed’s first book, Playing Hard Ball, describes his interest in the game, psychology, history and mythology of American baseball and compares it to cricket. His diary of the 2003 season, On and Off the Field was highly praised, and shortlisted for the William Hill Sports Book of the Year and The Cricket Society Book of the Year Award in 2004.

He is also a regular columnist and contributed cricket book reviews for the Wisden Cricketers’ Almanack and history book reviews for the Sunday Telegraph.

MIKE GRENIERHousemaster, Eton College

Mike is a House Master at Eton College, a Governor at Reed’s School in Cobham, and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. In 2012 he co-founded the Slow Education Movement in the United Kingdom. He has taught for over 15 years on Eton’s

Summer School programmes and has also led sessions for the member schools of the Eton-Windsor-Slough State School Partnership. He specialises in promoting greater co-ordination between academic and pastoral programmes, as well as leading staff development in the key areas of motivation and creating and maintaining a school-wide ethos.

CHRISTINE RYAN Chief Inspector, Independent Schools Inspectorate

Christine Ryan is the Chief Inspector and CEO of the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI), the largest independent inspectorate in the UK and the agency responsible for the inspection of more than 1250

primary and secondary schools (ages 0 to 18 years) in England. ISI inspections include all aspects of provision including the Early Years Foundation Stage and, from September 2011, Boarding Welfare. ISI is also an approved inspectorate for the UK Government’s new accreditation scheme for British schools overseas and currently inspects in over 25 countries worldwide. Christine is a Council member for the British Accreditation Council and maintains advisory relationships with several British and international educational associations and companies.

Christine’s career has spanned both the academic and business worlds, working with a range of education, commercial and media organisations. Originally a scientist and elected as a Chartered Fellow of the Society of Biology in June 2010, Christine has extensive teaching experience and a strong interest in driving improvement at all levels in organisations. Her current focus is on developing inspection methodology to reinforce the links between high quality teaching and pupil achievement.

Christine has worked with and inspected many independent and maintained schools, in the UK and overseas. She has a number of scientific and educational publications and continues to have an active interest in schools television, where she has been the education and science adviser for a variety of successful series, including the New Living Body, winner of the Japan Prize for Educational Excellence.

DOUG MUIRHEAD APFSManaging Director, Affinity Independent

Doug is a highly experienced and qualified financial planning professional. Having initially trained as a management accountant, he started in financial services in 1988 with Prudential. By 2000,

Doug realised that he could provide a better service for his clients as an independent, so he left to form Affinity.

Doug is married to Norina and they have two daughters, Isabella and Annalise, both of whom attend a local independent school, and a new baby Evie Alexandra.

Doug values time with his family and makes the most of their holidays. Interests include the odd round of golf, visits to the gym (motivation permitting) and watching Southampton FC.

SIMON NOAKESDirector, Interactive Schools

Simon is at the cutting edge of marketing and communications – within the schools and commercial sectors. He is an expert in strategic marketing, thought leadership, social media integration, branding, user-

centric application development and innovative thinking.

Simon does not believe in following benchmarks. Success can only be delivered through creating new benchmarks. Simon challenges the traditional methods of communications, and embraces new ways of thinking that align to changes in user behaviour and technological advances.

PAUL KILVINGTONThe School Branding Company

Paul Kilvington has a First Class Honours degree in design and worked with some of the UKs top consultancies before setting up his own practice specialising in corporate identity and design for print. He has been

responsible for the communication material for the launch of Range Rover in North America, the rebranding and relaunch of Triumph Motorcycles and the creation and promotion of many iconic brands, winning many awards along the way.

The identification of the most appropriate school for his daughter provedto be a life changing experience. He has spent the past fifteen years working extensively in the independent education sector, creating many hugely successful and innovative brands, prospectuses, films and web sites. Paul writes a regular column in The Independent Schools Magazine and speaks frequently at national and international conferences and seminars,

As well as running “the school branding and film experts”, Paul continues to work with a number of corporate clients and also enjoys designing interiors, cars, boats and gardens. He is a Full Member of D&AD and a former Chair of The English Speaking Board (International) Limited.

IAN DAVENPORTChief Executive, The SpringBoard Bursary Foundation

Ian began his professional career working in the City for Arthur Andersen, Morgan Stanley and finally Kleinwort Benson as a derivative trader before making the move into teaching. He spent the majority

of his teaching career at Radley College where he founded the Economics and Politics Department and became a housemaster; he also found time to teach Economics at Oxford University. In 2004 Ian was appointed as Head Master of Blundell’s School. Ian Morris is the Head of Well-being at Wellington College in Berkshire, where he has worked since 2004. Ian has a degree in Theology and much of his time involves the teaching of Religion and Philosophy, which he has done

in the state and independent sectors since 2000. Ian introduced the teaching of Well-being to Wellington in 2006 (colloquially known as happiness lessons) after finding out about scientific research into what makes human lives go well. Since 2006, Ian has written a course in Well-being for years 9-12 and has authored a book on the teaching of happiness and well-being called ‘Learning to Ride Elephants’ (Continuum Press, 2009) as well as 2 articles arguing for the centrality of well-being as an aim of education. Ian lives at Wellington College with his wife, daughter and son, and 2 cats.
