From legislative advocacy to mentoring women in our industry, WBC is committed to growing and expanding opportunities for women in construction.

‘‘

Welcome to WBC’s 12th Anniversary Champion Awards Dinner. As we celebrate twelve years of service to New York, we can take a moment to reflect on the incredible work that WBC has accomplished for over a decade. From legislative advocacy to mentoring our members, WBC is committed to growing and expanding opportunities for women in construction.

Twelve years ago, the founding members of WBC represented a small number of women in the industry. Today, WBC’s all-volunteer Board of Directors is comprised of leading business women owners and building industry executives who bring unparalleled experience, knowledge and dedication to their role on our team. We continue to meet with many elected officials to share our ideas, and our recommendations have been welcomed. Over the next several years, WBC will continue to assist with the City and State’s efforts to expand opportunities for women, minorities and small business enterprises.

WBC continues to expand opportunities for women and minorities to be fully active participants in New York’s construction industry through its outreach, its advocacy and its mentoring. As we enter our next chapter, we will continue to foster a reciprocal working relationship with the building trades to support the transition of smaller firms into the mainstream.

We thank you for joining us this evening at this truly special event. WBC’s Champion Award Winners represent the leaders of our industry, and your participation here tonight helps support their efforts. On behalf of WBC, its officers and its board, we extend a heartfelt thank you to the women and men that are being honored this evening and a very special thank you to all of you for supporting women in construction.

WOMEN BUILD IT!

Women are the new construction industry change agents, and their time to break the glass ceiling is now.‘‘

On the verge of the 2016 Presidential election, there has already been a lot of conversation around the concept of the “glass ceiling” and the efforts and initiatives that will be required to break this barrier at the highest level.

For over 12 years, Women Builders Council (WBC) has broken new ground in New York and beyond, and has shattered the industry’s glass ceiling in the process. By opening new doors and new opportunities for leading women in construction, architecture, engineering and other building trades, WBC has become the unified voice for women in the construction industry. And as we celebrate WBC’s 12th Annual Awards Dinner, our organization is still just getting started.

WBC is working hard to create a new vision for women in the construction industry, changing the paradigm for all races and genders to work collaboratively at all levels. WBC has successfully increased awareness of the issues important to all of us who build New York. Its members come from diverse professional backgrounds – contractors, construction managers, architects, engineers, project managers, real estate owners, developers and facilities managers and support professionals – many of whom are at the top of their careers and others that are rising through the ranks of the firms that build New York.

Women are the new construction industry change agents, and their time to break the glass ceiling is now!

Rodneyse Bichotte is the first Haitian-American woman elected into office in New York City. Born and raised in Brooklyn, Assemblymember Bichotte’s advocacy centers on increasing opportunities for Minority and Women-OwnedBusiness Enterprises (MWBEs), providing resources on affordable housing and home ownership, the financial literacy of her communities, public safety initiatives, high-quality public and private education and economic development, especially for individuals seeking to open small businesses.

As Chair of the Oversight of Minority and Women-Owned Business Enterprises Subcommittee, Assemblymember Bichotte has worked as a tireless advocate to advance the role of women and create increased opportunities for minorities in the construction industry. Through her sponsored legislation and policy initiatives, Assemblymember Bichotte has been a true friend and advocate of WBC and its initiatives to educate key decision makers on the importance of a diverse building industry.

Assemblymember Bichotte received her Masters of Business Administration from Northwestern University, Kellogg School of Management, and her Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from Illinois Institute of Technology. She worked in the fields of secondary education in mathematics, engineering mergers and acquisition, corporate development and corporate and investment banking. By encouraging minorities and women to grow their businesses, we are promoting job opportunities in our communities and building a sustainable economic future. MWBEs have a lot to offer, and increasing their participation in government contracts is one way we can help these job-creating small businesses prosper.

A LEADER, INNOVATOR AND CHAMPION OF MENTORSHIP With high school drop-out rates on the rise in New York, in 1987 Matilda Raffa Cuomo created the New York State Mentoring Program, the Nation’s first statewide, school based, one-to-one mentoring program. Before it ended in 1995, the highly successful program connected nearly 2,000 of New York’s neediest students to a network of highly trained mentors to help them succeed in school and graduate.

To continue her mentoring mission on a national level, in 1995, Mrs. Cuomo established Mentoring USA. Founded on the belief that the presence of a caring adult in a young person’s life increases self-esteem, strengthens relationships with peers and adults, improves academic performance and attendance, and helps combat school drop-out rates, Mentoring USA has expanded nationally and internationally with affiliate programs in Italy, Spain, Bulgaria and Latvia. From general mentoring to foster care, LGBT youth and workplace mentoring, the program continues to positively influence youth across the world.

A first of its kind award recognizing the outstanding lifetime achievements of Matilda Raffa Cuomo

To promote volunteerism and recruit more mentors, Mrs. Cuomo produced a book of personal stories by outstanding individuals from all walks of life recalling their mentors who inspired them during their formative years. The Person Who Changed My Life: Prominent Americans Recall Their Mentors, introduced and edited by Mrs. Cuomo, was first published in June 1999 with the second edition published in December 2002. Seventy-eight contributors – including Joe Torre, Whoopi Goldberg, Colin Powell, Diane Sawyer, Tony Bennett, Laurence Fishburne and Governor Mario Cuomo – write about the people who had a lasting influence in their lives. All proceeds of the book go to Mentoring USA.

INTERNATIONAL ADVOCATE FOR WOMEN, CHILDREN AND FAMILIESDescribed as the most active First Lady in New York State’s history, Mrs. Cuomo worked diligently with national and international elected officials, dignitaries, community leaders and advocates to increase the quality of life for women, children and families across the world.

By becoming a mentor, you have the power to inspire our young people to reach for the stars. We must care for all of our children—because they are our future.

‘‘ Mrs. Cuomo led New York State’s participation in the United Nation’s 1990 World Summit for Children and the U.S. ratification of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. Mrs. Cuomo also traveled to Africa on behalf of UNICEF and was invited to the Republic of Malta by the International Steering Committee of the United Nations to launch the International Year of the Family. In 1997, she was invited by President Clinton and Colin Powell to participate in the President’s First Summit on Volunteerism. Mrs. Cuomo is a graduate of St. John’s University’s Teachers College, where she met her husband, former New York State Governor Mario Cuomo. Before Governor Cuomo passed in 2015, they were married for 60 years. Mrs. Cuomo has five children and thirteen grandchildren.

New York State has a long-standing tradition of giving children access to every opportunity possible to reach their full potential. New York once led the way in mentoring when my mother established the first New York State Mentoring Program nearly two decades ago. Today, we are recommitting ourselves to helping our youngest New Yorkers. This mentoring program will give at-risk students the support they need to succeed in school

and life. With this program, New York is once again leading by example in securing a

brighter future for our children.

MATILDA RAFFA CUOMO “The New York State Mentoring Program was the first statewide, one-to-one, school-based mentoring program for at-risk children in our nation. Thanks to my son, Governor Andrew M. Cuomo, we are reinstating this vital program. I am proud to be formally chairing the New York State Mentoring Program to ensure every child has the opportunity to reach for the stars. We must care for all of our children—because they are our future.”

Governor Andrew Cuomo has launched the New York State Mentoring Program, which will provide career and life guidance to children who are at risk of failing out of school or in foster care across the state. The Program is chaired by Mrs. Cuomo, who guides its Advisory Board to identify, train and match hundreds of business-based mentors with students in some of New York’s most challenging elementary and middle schools.

In 1987, the late Governor Mario Cuomo established the nation’s first school-based, one-to-one mentoring program, the New York State Mentoring Program. Chaired by Mrs. Cuomo, this highly successful program screened and trained volunteers and matched them to children in their communities as a way to encourage at-risk youth to stay in school and earn a diploma. Before the program ended in 1995, it successfully connected nearly 2,000 of New York’s neediest students to a network of highly trained mentors to help them succeed in school and graduate.

The New York State Mentoring Program is designed to match some of the state’s most vulnerable and disadvantaged students with volunteers from businesses and enterprises in all regions of the state. The program currently targets fourth-, fifth- and sixth-grade students and is expected to expand into middle school as the program develops.

The New York State Mentoring Advisory Council will also work with private sector and nonprofit partners to identify mentors to work with at-risk youth in communities across New York State. Support for businesses and schools participating in this initiative will come from the State’s 10 Regional Economic Development Councils. A trained coordinator in each regional council will work with the mentoring participants in their area.

Additionally, the Advisory Council will work closely with its partners in education to identify distressed communities – areas that have higher poverty rates and a higher need for mentoring programs – and expand the program to reach children in those communities.

To accompany the launch of the New York State Mentoring Program, the Governor also announced the launch of a website to provide information about available services and mentoring models, in addition to resources for volunteers interested in mentoring children in their communities.

(1926 - 2016)

The Builder Who Shaped the American Skylines John Tishman was born on January 24, 1926 and, rather than pursue a career at the firm founded by his grandfather in 1898, he studied electrical engineering at the University of Michigan. Mr. Tishman then served as an Officer in the U.S. Navy and upon returning taught mathematics and physics at his former high school. “Teaching was probably the greatest experience of my life,” said Mr. Tishman during an interview with the Chicago Tribune in 1985.

A Master BuilderMr. Tishman began working for his grandfather’s firm in 1948. Known as the “Builder who Shaped the American Skylines,” Mr. Tishman’s influence is evident in important landmarks across the entire country. The iconic projects

spanned from Madison Square Garden in New York, Century City in Los Angeles, the Renaissance Center in Detroit to the Epcot theme park at Walt Disney World, in Orlando, Florida. He was a larger than life builder who leaves a larger than life legacy.

An Industry Innovator and VisionaryMr. Tishman is regarded for creating the entirely new profession of construction management. It evolved from his work as the construction leader of the “owner/builder” firm Tishman Realty & Construction, and his personal role as hands-on Construction Manager in the building of an astonishing array of some of the world’s tallest and most complex projects, including the first three 100-story towers, the original “twin towers,” the World Trade Center and the Hancock Tower in Chicago.

Mr. Tishman has also been credited with creating numerous other cost and time saving mechanisms, including panelized facades and motion sensor lights.

A Landmark in His Own RightJohn Tishman’s commitment to improving the human condition through philanthropic, educational and political endeavors made him a “landmark” in his own right. To further the profession he so profoundly influenced, he established the Tishman Construction Management Program at the University of Michigan. Mr. Tishman also served as chairman of the Board of Trustees for the New School.

Mr. Tishman was married to his wife Suzanne Weisberg for over fifty years. He is survived by his children, Daniel Russell Tishman, daughter-in-law Sheryl Crockett Tishman and Katherine Tishman Blacklock, and three grandchildren.

He was a man of complete warmth and authority. He understood and lived construction. A wonderful New Yorker.

12 YEARSOPENING NEW DOORS FOR WOMENSince its inception, WBC has been working to make it possible for more women to achieve their professional and personal objectives. This involves eliminating unnecessary barriers that have deterred women and minorities from being full, active participants in New York’s building industry.

WBC also recommends corporations and the building trades to appoint women to serve as board members in their respective organizations. Working with the industry on best practices, meeting with elected officials to share ideas and serving as mentors to young women in the industry are ways that WBC continues to help remove those barriers.

We encourage you to become involved with WBC and bring to your organizations the foundations and principles WBC has created.

Lela Goren is the Founder of the Goren Group and Vice Chair at WeWork. When she was four, Goren rode on her grandfather’s construction truck in Israel, and saw Jews and Arabs working and building together. When she was 30, she walked the halls of the UN General Assembly, and saw a building that made space for the whole world. Today, she sees what unites the broad spectrum of people it takes to put up a building, and the future they can build together.

A real-estate developer and investor for 15 years, Goren has worked on millions of square feet of real estate and mixed-use developments in New York City, including residential, hospitality, office and retail in all phases of assembly, acquisition, finance, design, construction, sales and marketing.

In October of 2015, Empire State Development awarded the Goren Group and Novo Foundation the rights to restore and redevelop the former Bayview Correctional Facility into The Women’s Building. This building will offer social justice activists the resources and support they need to drive cultural shifts.

An intellectual property attorney with a master’s degree in international law, Goren is currently a Vice Chair at WeWork, a start-up that creates co-working communities for businesses, not-for-profits and entrepreneurs both in the U.S. and internationally. She oversees government relations, corporate strategy and RFPs at WeWork, one of the fastest growing companies in the history of New York. During her previous 10-year association with Extell Development Company, Goren’s projects involved close collaborations with the City of New York, as well as the New York State and Federal governments, on issues including zoning, land use and historic landmarks.

Goren serves on the boards of the Brooklyn Academy of Music, Donor Direct, Equality Now and The New Israel Fund, earning her the 2013 Civic Spirit Award by the Women’s City Club of New York.
