Transcript of Annual Appeal -...
Diocese of Joliet/Catholic MinistriesAnnual Appeal
Giving revenue increased 29% from the previous year, average gift increased by 8%, and Bishop Sartins’ vision was realized.
Situation Analysis
The Diocese of Joliet is comprised of 121 Parishes spanning five counties in Illinois serving over 193,000
families of diverse ethnic and racial makeup. Population and economic growth in the region is one of
the highest in the nation. Demographics are changing rapidly applying pressure on already strained
social services supported by the Diocese. The Annual Appeal campaign generated 5.3 million dollars
from direct mail only from over 36,000 parishioners. Total revenue was down 9% and donations down
23% from the previous year. This created large funding gap for the Catholic Charities that had to be
made up using the Diocese’s financial reserves. Other environmental factors played a significant role in
the decline revenue. Parish monetary incentives and competing local community outreach programs
also contributed to Priests providing less support and awareness of the Annual Appeal. The new Annual
Appeal goal was set at 6.1 million to meet the needs of the 118 individual programs and initiatives of the
Diocese otherwise major cuts and austerity measures would be implemented.
Access Direct’s team of fundraisers and creatives recommended that the current Annual Appeal be re-
branded to better reflect a donor centric value proposition that would resonate with a new and diverse
parishioner population. Improve the infrastructure of giving for the Annual Appeal using a multi-channel
direct mail, on-site parish, and online fundraising campaign strategy and tactics. Provide psychographic
and demographic analytic modeling of current and lapsed diocese donors. Engage, inform the 187 parish
pastors to embrace the Annual Appeal’s Case for Support Doctrine of Giving and communicate the new
Bishop’s vision for the future.

Before After
Q Bishop Sartain, I already support my parish. How is thisappeal different?
A The Diocese and its administrative staff support and coordinate thework of the various parishes and agencies that conduct our ministriesin the seven counties we serve. That requires a separate annualbudget from your parish, and that’s why we ask you each year for a separate diocesan gift. When you support your parish and thisCatholic Ministries Annual Appeal, you express your fellowship withall parishes and support all that happens in our diocese.
Q What do the gospels teach us about sharing ourresources with the community?
A The Bible teaches the importance of being good stewards. In theearliest days of the Church, local churches supported one another.Collections were taken up for the needs of the poor. St. Paul gavethanks to one community for its support of another. This has beenpart of Church life from the very beginning.
A Conversation with Bishop Sartainabout the Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal
Q Who is helped by my gift?A The Diocese serves our seven county area tirelessly, helping people
of all faiths so extensively, especially the poor, homeless, elderly, and disabled, that many of our hometowns would be negativelyimpacted if we were unable to continue.
Fully 52% of the Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal supports thepastoral ministry of the Church that serves hundreds of thousands ofpeople in our diocese as well as foreign missions served by volunteersfrom our diocese. Another 18% supports the ministries of CatholicCharities in our community, serving 60,000 of our neediest neighbors.Nineteen percent supports our 78,000 children in Catholic schooland parish religious education programs. The final 11% supportseducation for our clergy members and seminarians.
Q Does my contribution really make that much of a difference?
A Absolutely. We could not fulfill these functions without your annualsupport. Even the smallest actions in our livesare an opportunity to make a difference forsomebody. Your contribution makes possibleany number of stories that could be told:people who received hope, grew in faith, changed their lives for the better, were fedand clothed and guided by diocesan ministries.Families, couples and teenagers have beensupported in everyday living and difficulttimes. I have no doubt that each one of themwill tell you that your gift made a difference intheir lives.

Q What are your greatest priorities?A Our first task as Catholics is to proclaim and live the gospel. Thus
everything we do to pass on the faith to future generations willalways be a top priority. Educating future priests is a crucial, ongoingpart of our diocesan mission, and we are blessed with a growingnumber of fine seminarians. We reach out to the poor and others inneed, bringing the presence and hope of Christ to them. We cannever underestimate how dramatically Christ changes lives!
Q So my gift is also a spiritual gift to me?A When we are asked to give, as to the Catholic Ministries Annual
Appeal, it is not just that we are asked to help other people. Giving isalso meant for our own good—so that through service, we grow aspersons, we learn more about God’s love for us, and we draw closerto Him. He is the source of every gift.
Your support means so much, to so many. Thank you!
Sincerely in Christ,
Most Reverend J. Peter SartainBishop of Joliet
