The PoSBO Awards 2016Youth Focus: North East is committed to “celebrating Young People in the North East”, and since 2010 we have been holding the PoSBOs.

Finding its roots in our positiveimages Truth About Youth project, PoSBO stands for “Positive Social Behaviour Order”. Youth Focus: North East celebrates the positive activities of young people, youth groups and youth projects.

There are eight awards available, individuals and groups working with young people across the North East are encouraged to apply. Winners of each category will receive an award, with all shortlisted nominees involved in the ceremony also receiving atoken of achievement.

About Youth Focus: North East

Established in 1989, Youth Focus: North East is a regional hub connecting young people and the organisations and professionals who support them.

Progressive and dynamic, our award-winning organisation is rooted in the values of youth work. We support a network of over 1500 organisations and individuals concerned withimproving the lives of young people. Supporting the development of quality services – we want young people to have the best from the organisations they access and the professionals who work with them.

We see the potential, not the problems, in young people. We develop responses anddemonstration projects that attempt to address big issues in young people’s lives. We also create space for young people to explore different issues and ideas; working alongside them to formulate responses.

Youth Focus: North East amplifies the voice of young people so they can be heard and we open up doors to new opportunities for both young people and professionals across the North East.

About The PoSBOs

The PoSBOs, now in its seventh year, is the region’s original young person awards ceremony

that recognises and celebrates all of the hard work and contribution to their communities

that 11-25 year-olds do throughout the year.

The event is organised by a voluntary group of young people who have been involved

throughout the life of the awards, with support from staff at Youth Focus: North East.

Not only are young people benefitting from receiving awards and feeling valued, but they are

also gaining valuable transferrable skills that will help them throughout their lives.

Originally funded through the Co-operative Foundation for its first five years, we are now only

able to run this event with the support of sponsors.

This years awards evening will take place on Thursday 8 December 2016 at BALTIC Centre for

Contemporary Art, Quayside, Gateshead. During the evening there will be a drinks reception

(non-alcoholic), presentation of awards, buffet and entertainment, and a special guest

speaker. We are expecting an audience of approximately 180 people including young people,

those who have worked with them, and their friends and family.

The History ofThe PoSBOs

“The PoSBOs are an opportunity to celebrate all the great work that young people are doing out there in their communities.”

Since it’s inception in 2010, the PoSBOs have seen over 200 nominations, over 100shortlistings, over 30 runner-ups, and over 30 award winners. Over the last seven years, The PoSBOs has awarded young people and youth projects for their valuable contributions indigital media, sport, making a difference, employment, and care.

The idea for the PoSBOs was developed by Yorkshire Housing in order to demonstrate that young people are good people and not to label them all as antisocial, providing a balanced view away from the ASBO (Anti-Social Behaviour Order) image of young people that was known at the time. Although ASBOs are now a thing of the past, Youth Focus: North Eastremains committed to promoting and recognising the positive behaviour and achievements of young people in the region.

For the first five year’s, the PoSBOs were sponsored by the Co-operative Foundation, their manager at the time had this to say in relation to the awards evening:

“The awards are a great opportunity for young people in the region to receive recognition for their inspring commitment and positive contribution to communities and to showcase theiroutstanding acheivements.”

Group Awards

Intergenerational Award

This award is open to any project that involves people from older and younger generations in all parts of their work. Both generations will have had an equal say and been involved in the planning, development, and delivery of the project. Their work will have made a positive impact on project participants and in the local community.

Best Youth Project

This award is open to youth groups and voluntary school projects. The project will have presented the young people with new opportunites through a unique and exciting approach. The project will have had a positive impact in their local area and the young people involved will have shown commitment and passion towards the project.

Positive Action Award

This is a new award to the PoSBOs this year. The Positive Action Award is an award that is open to anyproject that has done work around social action, contributing positively to their community, and making an impact in their local area. Young people will have been involved in the planning and delivery of the work.

Individual Awards

Young Carer Award

This award is for a young person that has dedicated his or her time to care for someone in need, whether that is a family member or close friend or relative.

Young Volunteer Award

This award is for a young person that has gone out of their way and made an outstanding contribution to their local community through volunteering. They will have shown passion and commitment to theirvolunteering role and have made a positive impact on the people they work with, either locally orregionally.

Young Employee Award

This award is for a young employee aged 16 to 25. They will have made a noticeable and outstandingimpact in their workplace. They will have made exceptional progress in their time as an employee and they will have shown that they are able to positively use soft skills in the day-to-day working environment.

Group and Individual Awards

Digital Youth Award

This award will go to a group or individual that has used the power of digital media to spread positive images, inspired other young people to take action, or has allowed young people’s voices to be heard on a bigger scale. This could be through successful petitions, hashtag campaigns, blogging, creation of an app or any other way that digital technology can be used to create, inspire, and achieve.

Inspirational Young Person/Group

This award is for an individual or group that is inspirational to other young people and their peers.They will have done something to stand out in their local community and be committed and passionate about improving the lives of other young people in the North East. They might have had to overcome some personal barriers to be able to become the inspirational young person/group they are today and they have shown they can use these experiences to influence their work.

We estimate from previous years the awards evening will cost approximately £5,000.

The financial areas we would like extra support with are:

We have decided this year to look at possible different levels of support/sponsorship for the celebration evening.
