I SEE POSSIBILITIES IN EVERYTHING. FOR EVERYTHING THAT'S TAKEN AWAY, SOMETHING OF GREATER VALUEHAS BEEN GIVEN. Michael J. Fox

Optimism is a beautiful thing. It propels you forward – provides hope and promise. It’s hard to imagine how one lives in a world without belief in possibilities. Life in a nonprofi t constantly changes. The community’s needs change, funding changes, resources change. Yet, the mission remains the same. Empower women and families in this community – Promote self-suffi ciency – Provide a nurturing and safe environment for our children.

When I look at the community we serve and particularly the children and families we served in Alliance After School Care and A-Teens this year, I am reminded of exactly what it means to see possibilities in everything. Every child radiates possibilities. Each moment our staff spends with a child in our programs is full of potential. Moments to teach them, to love them, to nurture them, to guide them fl ood our days. We are blessed in those moments.

As we look to the future and our new women’s program, GPS, the possibilities seem endless. Although one women’s program ended, a new opportunity to serve women is beginning. Helping women retain their jobs and grow within those jobs promotes self-su ciency and success.

The possibilities are everywhere, in everything, and they are created by you….our donors, our supporters, our colleagues, our friends. By your gifts of time, money, talents, and resources, the women, children and families in our community can unlock the door to tomorrow.

Thank you for helping the women and families we serve see all the possibilities their lives have to offer.

EMILY DEAN, President

TONI BROWN, Executive Director

After School CareDefi ning Alliance After School Care is about more than child-care. It is more than keeping children safe after school. It is more than helping complete homework. While it is all those things, it is more. It is about developing character.

Allison acted “di erent” than the other children at her school, and she speaks di erently. Some of the children liked to point out these “di erences” to the other children at the school. Alliance A er School Care sta member, Crystal, spoke to the children as a whole about how we are all di erent and yet there are things about us that are the same. Crystal spoke with the children over the course of the school year about how they would feel if they themselves were excluded from the group. Many of the children confessed that they too had felt le out at times and how it made them feel. Crystal encouraged the children to nd things about her that are interesting and cool because of her di erences. e character curriculum implemented by Alliance A er School Care encouraged the development of compassion, self-discipline, honor, and respect. By the end of the semester, the children started including Allison and commenting on the things they liked about her rather than the things they didn’t.

Our staff do more than babysit. They help grow and nurture the children in Alliance After School Care. The program provides services to 13 Abilene ISD elementary schools and to Buffalo Gap, Clyde, Merkel, and in 2015, will include Texas

Leadership Charter Academy. The staff provides a nurturing and safe environment for Pre-K through 5th graders from the time school releases until 6:00pm.

A TeensFor Jackie, middle school hasn’t been easy. She has moved a few times and had to change schools. And, it seemed to Jackie that no matter where she landed, she never really t in. She joined A-Teens at the beginning of 6th grade and attended a few weeks here and there. In 7th grade, she returned to A-Teens on a more regular basis. Still reluctant to participate in most of the activities, Jackie continued to show up week a er week. en, she began to attend A-Teens events outside the weekly sessions a er school. She joined in more, talked more, made friends, and became one of the most faithful participants in the program. e A-Teens sta noticed her “coming out of her shell” more and more as the school year progressed. the end of the year, Jackie’s mother told us that she saw her daughter’s self-esteem blossom this year. She believes Jackie discovered herself and found a place she really ts in.

A-Teens meets once weekly after school in a club format at Abilene ISD, Wylie, Clyde, and Jim Ned middle schools. The program is led by college-age counselors who mentor and support these teen girls during a very transitional time in their lives. During the summer, A-Teens hosts the “All Access Pass to Awesomeness” summer daycamp program Monday – Friday from 7:30am – 6:00pm for 10 weeks. The girls have a safe, fun place to hang out while learning life skills and making friends.
