Faith Book 7th SUNDAY OF EASTER

Acts 1:15-17, 20a, 20c-26; Psalm 47; 1 John 4:11-16; John 17:11b-19

From today’s Gospel reading:

(Jesus prayed) “I gave them your word, and the world hated them,

Because they do not belong to the world, Any more than I belong to the world.”

Reflection:

While the Word of God, Christ’s gift to us, can reassure us and give us comfort, it also should make us uncomfortable, for it questions our lives, probes our values and challenges how we treat one another.

So we ask ourselves:

● How am I challenged these days by the Word of God? ● How shall I respond to the challenge I am hearing.

God of light, by whose Spirit

all things are made new,

we praise you for the gift of life,

for the blessing of a new season,

for the mercy that makes each day

a fresh start.

Grant us the strength to walk

in your light,

the grace to experience your

presence with us,

and the hope that comes from being

made new in Christ.

Amen.

Society of Saint Vincent de Paul Gives Back!

Immaculate Heart of Mary should share in the profits. For each car, truck or van, running or not the Society of t Vincent de

Paul will give back to our church $50/$100 per vehicle. Maybe you don’t have a vehicle, but a family member, friend or neighbor has an old or neglected vehicle in their driveway that they would like to dispose of. Call the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul at: 718.491.2525. Thank You!

Vocations are born in prayer, and from prayer; and only in prayer can they persevere and bear fruit.

Are You Aware?

It has been our experience at times that some people may feel they are not able to receive Communion due

to divorce or other personal issues. Often times, there may be a misunderstanding regarding Church Teaching in these matters. You are encouraged to see Fr. Gill, S. Mary Ann, Deacons Jim, John or Tony for clarity so that you do not miss the opportunity to celebrate the healing presence of Jesus in the Sacrament of Reconciliation and in turn come to the Table of the Lord.

Dear Parishioner, Our Spring Extravaganza was a huge

success! All who attended had an amazing time. Those who won loved their prizes. Marie Hester was the winner of the Super 50/50 winning $2,535.00. The Committee did an amazing job! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Last Sunday the Rosary Society held their elections for the new Rosary Board. Congratulations to: Maria Rocco, President; Debbie Olivieri, Vice President; and Mary DeBernardo, Treasurer. Linda Gaglia will continue as Secretary in the coming year. I am grateful to Terry Noll, Gerri Cassone and Helen Gonzalez who have served the past two years as President, Vice President and Treasurer respectively. The current Rosary Board has done an amazing job and the Rosary Society continues to grow. In response to a few requests, the Rosary Society will be open to new members in the fall—both ladies and men. So, we can expect many new members come the fall. Our Parish Mission begins this weekend. I welcome my dear friend, Fr. Louis Joseph Mascarenhas, who will lead the Mission for us. I encourage you to come each day as we await the cming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. In this, our Jubilee Year, may we be especially open to the Gifts of the Spirit. Invite a friend or two to join you. Next weekend will be the Rosary Society Communion Breakfast. If you have not already purchased your ticket please contact Terry Noll as soon as possible. It is hard to believe but our Lancaster Trip to see Jesus is just days away. I am happy to say all that were on the waiting list were accommodated. Just a reminder that we leave on Tuesday, May 22nd at 8:00 a.m. Sharp from the front of the Church. Finally, I cannot thank you enough for your response to the Annual Catholic Appeal. We have reached our goal in pledges. Each dollar received over goal returns to the parish. Pledge envelopes are available in the church if you would like to make a pledge.

Songs for Mother’s Day Mother's Day is a great time to say "thank you" to all of the moms out there. And it’s no wonder why so many artists write songs dedicated to their mothers. Moms are a great place to find inspiration, and they

deserve songs written about what they do! So why not play a song for your mom to touch her heart? Or even better, sing along for her! Bruce Springsteen wrote “The Wish” about his mom. In between writing party jams and pop-punk anthems, the guys in Good Charlotte took some time out to write "Thank You Mom". Carrie Underwood co-wrote “Mama’s Song” recounting the lessons her mother taught her, like reaching for the stars and knowing how to do the right thing. Blake Shelton's "The Baby" is about the fact that no matter how old we get, our parents will always see us as their little boy or girl. Christina Aguilera's "Oh Mother" is a promise that no matter how big she gets or what they go through the two of them will always have each other. Originally written for the Soul Food soundtrack, "A Song for Mama" was Boyz II Men's last major hit, becoming a mainstay for Mother's Day. In “This Amazing Love” Emily Laudeman sings about how God couldn’t have put her into a better mother’s arms to grow up. Madonna co-wrote the somber "Like a Prayer" ballad about her mother, who died of breast cancer when the music icon was only five. In “Dance”, Nas longs for one more dance with his mother. Kanye West released "Hey Mama" in 2005, just two years before his mother passed away. He performed it at the 2008 Grammy ceremony, remaining one of the most touching moments in the history of the awards show. ‘The Best Day’ is a song that I wrote without telling my mom,” Taylor Swift told Taste of Country of her 2008 Fearless track. “I wrote it in the summertime, and I recorded it secretly, too. I had this idea that I wanted to play it for her for Christmas. So when I got the track I synced up all of these home videos from when I was a little kid to go along with the song like a music video, and played it for her on Christmas Eve and she was crying her eyes out.”

Trinity Rescue & Bensonhurst Cluster Outreach Program

This program is committed to clothing and feeding the homeless throughout the city. This is possible through hard work and donations from volunteers from more than 20 parishes in Brooklyn. They are located in St. Dominic's Church (2001 Bay Ridge Parkway). Immaculate Heart of Mary parishioners provided sandwiches and cookies for two runs. Mary DeBernardo and Rose Moore continue to volunteer monthly with NYC Books through Bars, and their shelves are in desperate need of paperback/pocket dictionaries and thesauruses. If you have any to donate, please contact Mary at (917) 312-6279 or [email protected].

The 125th Jubilee Year Journal

While previous Dinner Dance Journals have been produced ‘in house,’ this special Journal will be published by a professional printer. The 125th

Anniversary Journal will include a condensed history of our first 100 years with special attention to the last

25 years along with hopes and dreams of what might be in the years ahead. Of course, this requires solid deadlines. Therefore, we are

asking all to consider contributing to the Journal through Dedications, Memorials and/or Honors for family and friends. You might even consider

acknowledging clergy, religious and laity that have served the parish and school who may have

touched your life in a special way.

The Deadline for all dedications is June 20th. Please return all requests to the Rectory Office.

Baptism of Infants (Children age 7 years and younger)

Baptism Preparation Classes for families planning to have their child baptized at Immaculate Heart of Mary will take place the first Wednesday of every month at 7:00 p.m. in the Marian Center. Parents must attend; sponsors are also encouraged to join us for the

class. Families must be registered for the class prior to attending by contacting the Rectory. We will celebrate the Sacrament of Baptism on June 10th and July 15th. You must be pre-registered and attend the Baptism Preparation Class held first Wednesday of the month.

Baptism of Children (Children who have celebrated their

8th Birthday and older.) Children who have celebrated their 8th birthday must participate in a process - The Rite of Christian Initiation (R.C.I.A.) adapted for Children. This process takes place over three to five years and includes your child attending Faith Formation Classes and Mass regularly. This is a faith journey for both you and your child. When there is an appropriate readiness, your child is baptized, confirmed and receives Eucharist at the Easter Vigil. Your child continues regular instruction in the Faith Formation Program for several years after their initiation. For more information contact S. Mary Ann.

Only Parents or Legal Guardians may register a child

for Baptism. No date is definite until you have completed all registration forms at the Rectory.

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults

The R.C.I.A. is designed for adults who have never been baptized, perhaps been baptized in another faith, or baptized Catholic but never received Eucharist and Confirmation. This is an opportunity to explore life in the Catholic Community, have a companion on your faith journey, prepare for the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, and/or Eucharist, and Confirmation).

If you or someone you know is interested in learning more about the RCIA call: S. Mary Ann

Proximate Preparation Penance, Eucharist and Confirmation

All families registered in our parish who anticipate their children will receive Penance & First Eucharist (Communion) in the spring

of 2017 or Confirmation in the fall of 2017 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church must attend our Proximate Preparation Program. This would include children of our parish currently registered in Saint Joseph the Worker Catholic Academy, other Catholic or Private Schools and/or our Children’s Faith Formation Program.

Children who worship in other parishes who will be attending Saint Joseph the Worker Catholic Academy and wish to receive the Sacraments of Initiation at Immaculate Heart of Mary will need a letter from their pastor granting them permission to receive the Sacraments of Initiation at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church.

In addition, children of our parish who attend other private or Catholic Schools are encouraged to ‘come home’ to receive the Sacraments of Initiation at Immaculate Heart of Mary.

Proximate Preparation is for parents and children to attend together.

As always, it is the expectation that all are attending mass regularly. Remember these are the Sacraments of Initiation, initiation into the worshipping community. For further information or clarification, please contact S. Mary Ann. To assist us in planning, please call to register if you are not attending our Children’s Faith Formation Program.

Candidates for Confirmation in the fall of 2018 will meet on Saturday, May 19

at 3:30 p.m. in the Marian Center. Candidates in Catholic Academies,

High Schools or other Faith Formation Programs must pre-register for

Proximate Preparation by calling the Rectory.

Mother's Day Traditions: 10 Memorable Ways

to Celebrate Mother's Day

by Susie Michelle Cortright

A mother’s love is one of the most powerful forces in this world. Here are 10 ways to celebrate her love this Mother’s Day: 1. Create a Memory Jar. Fill a jar with slips of paper, each detailing a special memory you and your mother have shared. The more specific the memories, the better. Present her with the jar, and sit beside her as she reads each memory. 2. Interview the children in your family (both young and old) on what special things they love most about their mother. Record the sentiments on video or transcribe the thoughts in a special album. You could also record special memories, favorite family recipes, her best maternal words of wisdom...anything you want to remember about your mother. 3. Make a Blessing Book. Cover a composition book or hardbound journal with patterned papers and include photos of each of your mother’s children, as well as a special pen for her to record what she is most grateful for in this world. 4. Help a mother in need by donating money, clothing, or other household items to organizations that help mothers and children. 5. Make a donation to your mom’s favorite charity, in her name. 6. Get together with your family and friends and create handmade cards for your mom. Make sure to include a heartfelt, handwritten letter. 7. Send flowers to a new mom in celebration of her first Mother’s Day. 8. Make a tablecloth memento. Start with an oversized tablecloth and some fabric pens. Ask each member of the family to sign the tablecloth with a special message to mom. Kids can make their handprints, too. This is a keepsake that you can add to each Mother’s Day. 9. Write a letter to your children about how being their parent has enriched you. Save these letters in a special journal or album to give to your children when they become parents themselves. 10. Spend some time looking through your scrapbooks and reflecting on the bounty of love that comes to you via family and maternal love.

Happy Mother’s Day

A mother’s love never ends and her worries for her family preoccupy her each day. May this small gift provide opportunity for prayer and encouragement

from the Mother of us all.

Prayer to Mary, Untier of Knots

“Virgin Mary, Mother of fair

love, Mother who never refuses

to come to the aid of a child in

need, Mother whose hands

never cease to serve your

beloved children because they

are moved by the divine love

and immense mercy that exists

in your heart, cast your

compassionate eyes upon me

and see the snarl of knots that

exist in my life. You know very

well how desperate I am, my

pain, and how I am bound by

these knots. Mary, Mother to

whom God entrusted the

undoing of the knots in the lives

of His children, I entrust into

your hands the ribbon of my

life. No one, not even the Evil

One himself, can take it away from your precious

care. In your hands, there is no knot that cannot be

undone.

Powerful Mother, by your grace and intercessory

power with your Son and my liberator, Jesus, take into

your hands today this knot.

(Mention your petition here.)

I beg you to undo it for the glory of God, once for all.

You are my hope. O my Lady, you are the only

consolation God gives me, the fortification of my

feeble strength, the enrichment of my destitution, and,

with Christ, the freedom from my chains. Hear my

plea. Keep me, guide me, protect me, O safe refuge.”
