A Message From Our Exalted Ruler
By the time you get this newsletter, the holidays will be over and we will be settling in for
the new year. The Alabama Elks Mid-Year Convention is scheduled for January 20-21st at
Perdido Beach on the Gulf. There are several members from our Lodge that are planning
to go to the convention. Several members are even leaving on January 19th and staying
overnight in Fairhope. We will visit the Fairhope Lodge and eat at one of the local seafood
restaurants on that Thursday evening. If you are interested in going, there is information
on the bulletin board at the Lodge, or you can contact me. I will be glad to forward the
info to you. Should be a good time, so try to clear your calendar and make plans to go
with us.
Remember that nominations for Lodge Officers will be at the Lodge meeting on February
9th. If you are interested in being a Lodge Officer or know someone who is, please attend
this meeting. Elections will be held for any contested position at the Lodge meeting on
February 23rd.
As always, I encourage you to read the rest of the newsletter as there are many informative
articles concerning activities and developments at the Lodge.
Fraternally yours,
Amy Lane, ER

Community Activities:
Wreath Laying Ceremony -
Fort McClellan Military Cemetery
On a crisp sunny Saturday morn-
ing, December 10th, I had the
honor of participating in the first
Ceremony of this kind at Fort
McClellan honoring our local
deceased Veterans as part of
Wreaths Across America project.
Wreaths were placed on all grave
sites that numbered more than 300
by five local Boy Scout troops and
four Girl Scout troops.
The Fort McClellan ceremony is
similar to the one at Arlington
National Cemetery near Washing-
ton D.C.. I was told that more than
540 cemeteries across the nation
now participate annually.
More info is at
www.wreathsacrossamerica.org
I would like to thank each
member of our lodge and Curt Sasser
for supporting this event through our
donation and time.

Please, if you have not donated
your $10 to ENF this year, it's not
too late. I challenge our Lodge go
higher in the standings. We have
met the $4.50 per capital goal set
by the Grand Lodge, but I know we
can do better than that. Each year,
the Elks National Foundation
strives to grant more $ back to each
state than it received from that state
in donations. These grants help
fund the state Elks associations'
major charitable projects.
Our major state project is Camp
ASSCA! The state associations also
use these grants to fund their
"Hoop Shoot," Soccer Shoot, Drug
Awareness and Scholarship
Programs, as well as other
charitable and philanthropic
projects. This year, the Elks
National Foundation will grant
$8.1 million to the state Elks
associations.
So, please stop by my office or
mail a $10 check.....I just might
buy you a drink!
A Letter From Reba Chunn
It was in July of 1961 that my
Grandpa passed away leaving my
Mom to raise the four of us girls all by
herself. He was a member of the Elks
Lodge in Anniston; and that year, the
men from the Lodge delivered the big-
gest Turkey I had ever seen to our
house for Christmas. My eyes were as
big as golf balls as they continued to
bring in oranges, apples, and all kinds
of nuts. I think it was more food than I
had ever seen in my life at one time.
And they didn't forget the kids
either! There were big candy-canes a
foot long and about an inch
thick. They didn't stop there. They
brought each child a Christmas pre-
sent. My little sister got a car and I
remember Mom saying that Santa
must have known that she liked cars. I
will never forget my present, a black
poodle dog with a tail that rattled
when you hit it. I couldn't wait to get
to school to tell all my friends about
my poodle dog. I talked about it so
much you'd have thought it was ten
feet tall or more. I kept that little dog
close to me for a very long time,
through several difficult moves.
In fact, I kept it until my two little
brothers arrived on the scene. And we
all know what boys do.
I never got the chance to thank each of
those men personally, but I will never
forget the joy and happiness they
brought into my life that Christmas.
Each year, I try to follow their exam-
ple and remember those less fortunate.
At times, I can hardly believe that 50
years have come and gone. Those
memories are still clear and bright to
me. I am thankful for those men and
the gift they gave me and my family.
Most of all, I am happy to know the
tradition of bringing joy to others is
still very much a part of the Elks
Lodge in Anniston.
Thanks to all of you for such a
wonderful Christmas memory!

REPORT FROM BOARD OF DIRECTORS
We now have a new two-tap draft beer cooler/dispenser in the lounge for you to enjoy your favorite, cold glass of suds. We've taken a while to accomplish this, but it's done now.
In the works are a couple of large flat screen TVs. We hope to have them up and working for the BCS game as well as the Super Bowl. We're now raising money for these amenities through various donations
projects. Come by the Lodge and someone will be there to explain the way to make your $10 donation and enjoy doing it. It's based on a point system.
Also in discussion is a way to improve the "cattle chute" side entrance to the Lodge. Hopefully, we can figure a way to finance a conversion of the chute into a nice and inviting foyer for our members and guests. The first impression is always the lasting impression to our guests and potential members who enter our Lodge. No deci-sion has been made, but it's under consideration.
In addition to Lodge improvements, the Board of Directors (formerly Trustees) present for Lodge consideration our benefactor programs. The following are some gifts and donations our Lodge has been able to make and will make for the 2011-12 Lodge year: Wreaths Across America-$1,000; Dictionaries to third graders-$3,500; Tornado victims-$2,500; Others in need-$4,000; Scholarships-$30,000; Henderson Trust Scholarships-$4,000; Community Children and Family's
Christmas-$8,000; UCP-$7,500; Relay for Life-$8,000; ROTC Scholarship-$500; Calhoun County Spelling B-$700; Veteran's Clinic and Activities-$2,000; Hoop Shoot for community youth-$500. Elks Care, Elks Share!

CHILDREN’S CHRISTMAS PARTY
AND NEEDY FAMILY GIFTS
Our Lodge hosted a Christmas party for over eighty children. Each child was able
to visit with Santa and Mrs. Claus and received a gift. Many members worked
hard to help make this event successful. Hank Luecken and Honey Gann were
special helpers and without them, Santa and Mrs. Claus would not have been able
to attend our party. Sandy Gates-Lipham did a wonderful job with Santa pictures
that she took of all the children. Everyone should have received a picture of their
child with Santa and Mrs. Claus. If not, please let us know as soon as possible and
we will get it to you. You can also visit Sandy’s website at momentsphotography-
bySandy.com to view all the photos. Lodge photographer Daniel Clark made
wonderful, candid photographs of the party. Those can be seen at the Lodge or on
our Lodge’s Facebook page. Julie Luecken worked hard making over two hun-
dred sugar cookies for the children to decorate. Of course, there were also the
shoppers, wrappers, cooks, decorators, etc. that all made the extra effort to make
sure that this event was the biggest and best yet. If we tried to name all those
thirty or so people who helped, we would be sure to leave someone off the list. But
just like Santa, we know who’s been nice, and we give them our sincere thanks for
all their help.
ANTLERS’ MEETING IS THE SECOND SUNDAY OF EVERY
MONTH AT 1:30 P.M. EVERYONE IS WELCOME TO VISIT
AND ALL YOUTH (AGES 6 YRS AND ABOVE) ARE
ENCOURAGED TO JOIN!
The Antlers helped host the Children’s Christmas Party. They
worked hard planning the activities, moving tables and chairs,
decorating and manning the activities tables.
The Antlers have also delivered all the food and supplies that were
collected to a local private animal shelter. They will soon be deliver-
ing the food collected in the food drive to a local food pantry.
The Antlers program is designed to teach our youth about civic and
charitable activities. The older Antlers also act as mentors for the
younger ones. If you are unfamiliar with the Antlers program and
would like more information, please contact Amy Lane. Visitors are
also welcome at the monthly meetings. There is no cost to join.
HOOP SHOOT
Our annual hoop shoot contest will be held at the Oxford Civic Center Gym (Oxford Lake) on Sunday, January 29th. Registration begins at 1:15p.m. The hoop shoot starts at 2 p.m. Ages for contestants are 8 to 13 years for both boys and girls. Trophies will be awarded to first, second and third place winners for each age group of boys and girls (i.e. 8-9, 10-11, 12-13), and everyone will receive a recognition medal. First place winners will go to the District tournament in Hoover. From there winners go to state finals in Birmingham, regional's in Valdosta, Ga., and nationals in Massachusetts. Anyone who has or knows a child in the age group who likes to shoot basketball free throws, tell them about this Elk spon-sored event. It's good clean fun and competition, with a chance for the child and family to get an all-expense-paid trip to the tournaments that follow for the winners. Last year over 3 million youths nationwide participated in this very interesting and fun contest. Also, any adult interested in helping in our local contest should contact Hoop Shoot
Chairman Roger Jackson.
