the approach

dreki, iceland is in a very remote and often extreme in its environment. only a hike away is the askja volcano which still causes small earthquakes beneath the site’s surface. continuous winds throw volcanic soil around the site, while an expanding and contracting river from drekigil’s canyon interacts with the building design. systematically, the building acts to harness energy and resources moving through the site from as many of these precarious site conditions as possible. resources like wind and water are transformed into usable energy and drinkable water and reused and displayed throughout the building.

campsites and pools play with the site as it changes overtime through catching debris or collecting and mixing water as it fl ows into the site. the building aims to celebrate and harness the unstable ground and conditions of the site. a dark, rough, monolithic exterior, contrasts the refl ective surface lining the outdoor spa area. visitors will leave behind the sublime, and experience both places of warmth and gathering.

The units sit on a concrete foundation wall, and stack upwards to the roof with perforated tie-backs. The roof panels are thinner but have the same appearance and act as pavers holding the insulation down within the protected membrane roof.

in antiquity, rome relied heavily on water sources far outside the city walls to supply its aqueducts. the master plan for the site, designed by myself and danielle rosen, acts as a self-generative clean water mecha-nism with fi ltration plantings through-out. our plan includes a museum of the city, and restores the link between basilica di san giovanni in laterano and Porta Maggorie, where two aqueducts converge. aurelian walls of rome

site analysis of water, ruins, traffi c and circulation

within the site, four main areas have been delineated. the fi rst is a park containing the museum at the beginning of the water fi ltration through the site and within the museum. the second is a pathway along viale castrense, im-proving walkability and cycling infrastructure along the site, allowing users to move beside, above, over and inside the ancient aurelian wall. the third, along via casilina, is where water begins to hint at the existence of acqua claudia in a waterscape that will lead into Porta Maggiore. the fourth, where water will have reached the end point, celebrates the tomb of the baker using landscape elements that evoke the fi ve senses.

[current finalist in ontario sustainable design awards]

My colleague alex robinson and i were given the unique opportunity to design a residence for high-altitude run-ners training in kenya. the client, also a runner, owned a small plot of land where he wished to house runners from all over the world. so far, he has.

sustainability to us, and to those who use our building, means contributing to make a better community and improving the lives of people while having either no impact, or creating a positive effect on the environment. the residence was built completely off the grid not only to respect the environment, but also out of necessity. Most rural communities do not have the opportunity to connect to the grid so there was a natural and obvious shift to make the project as self-sustaining as possible. a grey water system is on site for all washing, and solar panels provide a small amount of electricity. rain water is collected by the metal roof, directed into the courtyard and filtered into a cistern.

the runners retreat was built almost entirely from local materials surrounding the site. the construction is primarily wood and brick with a concrete slab and metal roof. the bricks were sun baked on the site and two trees felled and cut only 500 meters off site. we wanted to use local materials in order to lower the embodied energy of the building, but also to allow locals to duplicate construction methods easily and affordably.

MONASTIC TRAINING CYCLE | CIRCULATION

Similar to a running track, the courtyard will have a clear circulation path around its edge. The monastic style courtyard will represent the vigorous daily training cycles the runners undergo everyday.

The causeway is the main circulation route through the residence. The south opening allows for interaction between the residence and the main hut while the north opening will allow for further development and access to other areas of the site

Drainage is controlled carefully on the site and will be directed into cisterns or filtered back into the site.

Just as the runner is drawn into a routine and focussed on their training, water will help draw attention to this sacred, focused space.

The structural system will be comprised of standard timber that will form a cohesive connection between both the beams and col-umns. In addition the various shading devices across the building will be suspended off of this structural system.

cambriDGe hotel 2a studio Project

located in cambridge, ontario, this hotel aims to revitalize and bring life to the historic city center. drawing from a similar material pallet, the building fi ts into the fabric of the city while introducing new amenities to the community to draw activity into this small commuter town.

included in the hotel is a water therapy spa and fi tness center that is available to the public. during the winter, the courtyard is converted into a community skating rink which screens movies just as in the summer months. the courtyard joins to the adjacent laneways and has controlled sight lines from the street. skaters can enjoy a hot chocolate from the kitchen that opens into the public space, or head to the bar which will draw locals inside.

this mixed-use building of residential and live-work units changes the way people circulate through towers and interact with other residents. small, inter-connecting outdoor spaces act as passages of sound, sight and circulation that are perfect for small gatherings or opportunities to meet new people. the building’s amenity spaces populate the street and a gradation of the division between private and public space is created from a layering of outdoor corridors and exterior shading.
