Who is Anne of Cleaves?
• Her name is Anne of Cleaves she was born on September 22 1515. Her father was John Duke of Cleaves and her mother was Marie von Julich. She died on July 17 1557 aged 41. She was married to Henry VIII on January 6 1540.
What happened?
• As you know Anne was very rich she hired an artist to draw more pretty. When henry saw the picture he was instantly in love. So the marriage was arranged.
Next…..
• When Henry saw her she looked unpleasant and looked nothing like her in the picture. She looked more like a horse. Henry quoted “ I like her not.” He referred her to the “ Mare of Flanders “
Then…
• It was too late to cancel the wedding as the marriage treaty was in place, and despite Henry’s misgivings they were married on 6 January 1540. A few weeks later Anne was told to leave the court and informed of Henry’s decision to reconsider the marriage.
Finally
• Anne received a generous allowance and Heaver Castle in Kent, former home of the Boleyn family. Reluctant to return home to her family a failure, Anne remained in England for the rest of her life and was referred to by Henry as the ‘Kings beloved Sister’.
