My chair in a week was a first take at building a rocking chair. Inspired by the one hit wonder “Don’t Rock The Boat,” the form of the chair is evocave of simple sailboats, a theme that is emphasized by the chair’s rocking moon. I obtained my geometry for the rockers and chair dimensions from an adirondack chair rocker at Design Within Reach. While the seat angle and frame dimensions largely worked out, I was not able to successfully replicate the rockers for a slow rocking feel. Rather the rocking was a bit too fast to be comfortable. I learned a lot in this week about quick use of the woodshop for prototyping and joinery. The biggest challenge of manufacturing the chair was cung symmetrical rockers on the bandsasw and then assembling them on the frame such that they were concentric and in plane. Overall I learned that achieving comfortable rocking geometry is much harder than it seems. Although I pursued the idea of a rocking chair for a few weeks past chair in a week, I ulmately pivoted and built final chairs that centered on a completely different concept. My chair in a week was a first take at building a rocking chair. Inspired by the one hit wonder “Don’t Rock The Boat,” the form of the chair is evocative of simple sailboats, a theme that is emphasized by the chair’s rocking motion.

The biggest challenge of manufacturing the chair was cutting symmetrical rockers on the bandsasw and then assembling them on the frame such that they were concentric and in plane.

Overall I learned that achieving comfortable rocking geometry is much harder than it seems. Although I pursued the idea of a rocking chair for a few weeks past chair in a week, I ultimately pivoted and built final chairs that centered on a completely different concept.
