1.The Kingdom

This is the first majorimage we comeacross in the poem. Poe

uses it abunch of times, alwaysas a part ofthe phrase "a kingdom by the sea." The verses

tell a story, but the chorus comes back to themain images again and again.

2.The Sea It comes up

again and againin the poem,

and it's theimage that tieseverything together. We think of the ocean inthis poem as being huge and lonely and cold. It's anice reflection of the emptiness and desolation

that the speaker feels now that he has lostAnnabel.

3.Annabel Lee

She's the reasonfor the poem andshe's clearly theonly thing our speakercan think about.She was young andbeautiful and one halfof the perfect couple. Buteven though Poe tells us allthat, we don't know very much about Annabel. No detail is givenhere. Because of that, we think she's meant to be a symbol ofimpossible, pure beauty and love. In fact, she seems a little toogood to be true.

4.The Angels

Interestingly

enough, these

are the badguys in this poem.

They take the

blame for killing Annabel. The abgels arejealous of Annabel and her boyfriend.

5.The moon and the stars

If there's any partof the natural worldin this poem that feelslike it might be sort ofpositive and friendly,

this is probably it. Whilethe wind chills and kills andthe ocean is full of demons,at least the moon and stars

bring memories of Annabel Lee.At the same time, it's clear that memories of themoon and stars aren't very happy ones for our speaker.
