Anna and Philip go on holiday

A (read-aloud) primer

nna was excited! She had barely opened her eyes when she remembered that today was the beginning of her very first real trip. They were driving to the seaside!

Of course, Anna wasn’t going alone.

She was going with her brother Philip

and her parents, Nina and Daniel.

A

Before they could set off, Mum and Dad still needed to load a few things into the car: Suitcases, swimming tubes, fire extinguishing spray, bike helmets for the whole family, as well as some sandwiches and cookies for the drive. »Did you remember all our ABUS helmets and bike locks, too?« asked Mum. »Of course, otherwise we wouldn’t be able to lock up our bikes,« said Dad, holding four bike locks in his hand – two colourful ones for Anna and Philip’s children’s bikes, and two larger ones for his and mum’s..

Meanwhile, Anna had packed her suitcase with all the things she needed. She was taking her teddy, multi-coloured beads, and crayons and colouring books.

She had also locked her case with her colourful padlock from ABUS, so that nobody could open it.

»I don’t want a pink padlock like yours. I’d rather have a blue one!« Philip explained.

He had rummaged around in his dad’s tool box, which was lying in the corridor in front of their rooms upstairs. Dad planned on bringing his box along on holiday, just in case something went wrong with the car or the bikes and he needed to fix them.

»There’s one in here, great!« said Philip, as he pulled a large, blue, shiny padlock out of the tool box.

Anna opened the little gate at the top of the stairs and bounced down the steps with her little suitcase in hand.

»Anna, Philip,« Mum called from the kitchen. »We need to set off soon, get a move on! Have you packed everything that you want to take?« Anna showed her mother the little suitcase with the padlock, »Yup, I have!«

Dad was wandering across the garden, staring intently at his tablet.

He was checking if he could see video images of the living room on the screen while he was away. Finally, he was happy – everything was running smoothly. He could even watch Anna and Philip as they jumped up-and-down on the sofa in the living room.

»That’s enough now, stop jumping around and being silly on the good sofa,« Mum said, as she herded Anna and Philip out of the living room. All three headed to the car. »Go and get in the car. Dad and I are going to double check that all the windows and doors are closed.«

Dad used the alarm system to check if any windows were still open.

»Nina, the window in the upstairs bathroom is still slightly open,« he said. »And a window that is slightly open, is still an open window!« Mum added. »I’ll go and close it immediately.« Afterwards, Dad set the ABUS alarm security system so that the house was protected.

»Well, let’s be off then!« Dad said. Mum locked the front door with her red key and checked one last time that everything was secured. Dad packed the last few things into the boot. The bright, ABUS 3D warning tent, for when Anna and Philip wanted to play outside, and a Junior-Care nightlight for Anna, to help her get to sleep.

Mum was in her spot in the passenger seat and turned to look at Anna and Philip in the back seats, »Now we can finally go,« she said.

»Yaaay!« shouted Anna and Philip. Anna and her family finally set off towards their holiday by the sea.
