The Prez Says……. By Tom McLarney

March is here but I’m not sure where spring is. With as little cold weather that we have had I’m still tired of it and spring can’t come soon enough. Just a reminder, the meeting location has changed to the Mable Kay House at 24 Walnut Ave, Haddonfield. (Map on page 2) The 42nd Annual Charter Luncheon will be held on April 1st at the Indian Springs Country Club. Everyone should have received an invitation in their mail but if not there is one included in this newsletter. The money is due by the meeting. I would like to thank Bob & Jan Durbin for sharing their slide of Egypt with the membership at the last meeting. I understand that they will be presenting their slides of Russia at a later date. If you attended the Atlantic City Car Show & Auction please fill us in on any of your interesting purchases.

Carol & I went on Thursday night to see the “High End” car auction which was very interesting, maybe 13 out of 50 cars sold that night. The Vogelsons’ were heavily involved in the operation of this event. We also went on Sunday and it was pretty dead, most cars were gone or sold, the weather probably was a factor. Thanks to George, the web site (www.ankokas.com) is moving right along, one year of Smoke Signals, the roster & membership applications etc are looking good. Any changes needed to the roster should be submitted to the Gundersens’ & to George. (New form attached) This months meeting will feature a presentation of automobile photographs by Herb Kushner of Spittin-Images. They are created by taking your disc or negative and enlarging them on paper or canvas. He will have samples of the work.

This month’s directors meeting will be at Howard & Judy Steinbergs’ on March 6th at 7:30 pm. Next months will on the 6th of April. All are invited; please notify the host or hostess if you plan to attend.

At the March 15th meeting we will be asking for volunteers for the various categories for

our 2008 AACA National Show that we will be hosting.

Please join and help out. Thank you.

The proposed race track in Millville has been approved and construction will begin soon. It will be a great facility for racing and is close by.

On another note the Vintage Sports Car Club of America is holding it’s first race and driver’s school at Pocono Raceway on April 14th & 15th. They usually hold it at Lime Rock Park but this year it has been moved to a close track. It is not a spectacular attended race but anyone can go and enter the track area were all the cars are. So if you like vintage race cars and would like to see them race, come on out.

On another note, Earl Sixburry is looking for a garage to store an antique car he is buying. His home phone is 856-482-0859. So if anyone has a space for rent, give him a call.

The Original Hershey’s Kissmobile on Display By Nancy Gates, Director of Museum Operations

The original Hershey’s Kissmobile is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year and we’re excited to have the opportunityto showcase the Kissmobile Cruiser at the AACA Museum. The Kissmobile will be available for visitors to see nowthrough October 14, 2007.

The Hershey’s Kissmobile cruiser is a 12-foot tall, 26-foot long custom-made vehicle resembling three Hershey’s Kisses— a classic Hershey’s Kisses Brand Milk Chocolate, a Hershey’s Kisses with Almonds and a Hershey’s Hugs BrandMilk Chocolate. Since the creation of Hershey’s Kissmobile in 1997, the cruiser has traveled over 250,000 miles anddistributed samples of over 2,000,000 Hershey’s Kisses Brand Milk Chocolates. The mission of the Kissmobile is tocreate an emotional connection with Hershey’s consumers and to raise donations and awareness of the Children’sMiracle Network. All money raised locally stays in the community and benefits the Children’s Miracle Network hospitals. For more information on the Hershey’s Kissmobile tour, please visit www.kissmobile.com.

This specific Kissmobile Cruiser, one of four that have been built, has reached the end of its tour life. It will now stay in the Hershey area as an important part of the Hershey Chocolate story.

Who Can Forget Their First Car? By Carl Grossman

Faithful readers now know my first car was a dark blue '52 Chevy Deluxe coupe. It was nosed and decked, with a J.C. Whitney almost chrome strip down the center of the hood necessitated by the two piece hood design. It had '54 olds tail lights that gave it simulated fins. The grille, whose chrome had long since gracefully oxidized, was painted matching blue with white teeth. It had full aluminum racing discs on the front wheels with a blue and white starburst design matching the Earl Schibe paint job gotten on special for $19.95. Yes, that's right; in 1961 you could have an entire car painted for under twenty bucks, plus the cost of the razor blade to scrape the paint off the windows. They didn't spend much time on masking or prep, but made up for it in volume and the drip marks were included free. Coverage was never a problem with Earl Schibe. I think they painted cars with a hose instead of a spray gun.

Old Blue was powered by the famous Blue Flame Six with an economical one barrel carb. The oil passages in those engines clogged with gunk over time causing the valves to play a musical tune as you drove along. I purchased the Pep Boys quick fix which was merely an external copper tube to carry oil from the sump to the top of the engine. After installation, the engine was deathly quite, causing me to often hit the starter button, thinking it had stalled, only to hear the screech of the starter, since the engine was already purring along. It's interesting that fifty four years later Chevy has reintroduced the starter button as a cool innovation.

Since the engine didn't have enough torque to break the tires loose, even in a snow storm, I had to devise a way to appear to "lay rubber" at the hamburger joint. I accomplished this by getting up a good head of steam in first gear, and as I approached the driveway exit apron I would mash in the clutch so the car's momentum would increase its speed above normal first gear revs. As I hit the apron I would pop the clutch (still in first gear) which would create a momentary rapid deceleration causing the tires to skid and emit a loud screech, at which time I would floor the gas and hit second gear in a cloud of dust. This created the illusion that I spun the wheels going forward, when in fact the tires actually broke loose stopping, not going. To this day I am thankful I didn't leave the entire drive train in the parking lot while beating the hell out of the car executing one of these idiot maneuvers.

Despite its age, the car was very reliable and never failed me. It did, however, have two quirks. First the coil (whatever that is) was mounted so the main wire plugged into the bottom and was held in contact by a rubber cap which, from time to time due to gravity and spirited driving, would pop off, shutting off the engine at inopportune moments. Why I didn't just reverse the mounting so the cap was on top instead of underneath or fasten the cap with a hose clamp eludes me to this day. Each time the car stopped, I'd just pop the cap back on and be on my way. The second quirk led to more exciting results. The car was a stick shift with the "three on the tree" mechanism mounted externally atop the steering column. As you went through the gears, the stick would pivot in a threaded socket just above the centerof the steering wheel. The threads had long ago worn out and occasionally as I would shift from first to second, pushing down on the stick to go through the "H" pattern, the stick would pop out of the socket requiring me to let go of the steering wheel and poke my left hand through the steering wheel above the horn rim to jam the end of the gear shift lever back into the socket while completing the shift with my right hand. This is how I learned to steer with my knees.

Old Blue was nine years old when my older brother gave it to me with a "Here kid, your sixteen, you should have a car". I was floored. Most of the customizing was his handiwork, but he realized, as did I, that I'd never be allowed to drive the family car since Dad used it for business and if I wrecked it we wouldn't eat. It was an incredible gesture which I only appreciated years later as I matured. I only wish he were here for me to thank. I guess its never too late. Howie, you were the best, I miss you.

Next time……….car number two…..stay tuned!
