This journey explores a secret place that only a few know about. It’s a little strange because it really is a paradise. Anjan and the Skäcker-fjällen mountains, in Jämtland, Sweden, seduce us in the winter.

In the pale rays of the winter sun, I skin up to an incredibly beautiful snowdrift in the form of a tremendous amphitheater. Light pours over me from all sides, and as the temperature increases, I take off my shell jacket. Already amazed at the beauty of my surroundings, I discover an awe-inspiring rime-ice sculpture as tall as a human at the north end of the drift. Like a silent guardian, it oversees my entry into this mysterious realm of perfect silence and sparkling purity.

It seems to ask me,, “Are you really worthy?” Of course, it’s only made of snow and ice. But I imagine

that it nods ”yes”.As if by magic, the persistent wind subsides. The mor-

ning’s clouds have left and visibility is clear. Behind the next ridge, I should be able to see the vastness of the massif.

Or behind the next one? Or maybe the one after that? As I squint into the sun, I wonder if today’s definition

of wilderness is a little bit off. I have read books where some parts of Manhattan’s Central Park are described as ”extreme wilderness”. Furthermore: “Wilderness adventure”, accor-ding to the Sunday newspapers in Stockholm, can be had only a snowball’s throw from the city’s metro stations.

Pure absurdity. Wilderness is wild land where nature is always ready to take a deadly stranglehold on those who do not understand it. Wilderness should be untouched and located far from the comforts of civilization.

But where then, can one find wilderness? Personally, I think of the big, pristine forests in Siberia and Alaska’s interior, or even the areas of the Amazon that have gone un-exploited. As I see it, these are wilderness areas. I even think it can be found in northern Sweden’s Sarek National Park.

And I would even dare to say that in a way, wilderness can be found right here − in Anjan, or Skäckerfjällen as the area is also known. Anjan is an area of mountain landscapes in a very concentrated and stately form. It exists relatively un-touched and still bears a virgin and pristine environment. Here, there are very few trails and cabins, and it is rare that you see other hikers or skiers. If you travel further north into the area, or to its western parts, you can live like a hermit for weeks, without having to worry about any unexpected human visitors. You are alone, exposed to nature’s comforts and to its fury.

Civilization, however, is always nearby. As the crow flies, the Skäckerfjällen region is only 15 to 20 kilometers wide from East to West, and 20 to 25 kilometers from north to south.

The mountain area is complemented by rivers and lakes, both small and large. The huge lake Torrön adorns the

region’s eastern flanks, while the lakes of Juvuln and Kallsjön are located further south. Furthest south, Lake Anjan can be found, as well as a myriad of ponds and tarns in the west.

The starting points for trips into the area are the villages of Sågen, Gråsjön and Kolåsen, as well as the Anjan Mountain Station, all of which can be reached by car.

Earlier this morning, I found my way through the forest north of the Anjan Mountain Station. A dense jungle of moss covered spruce – now frozen and glistening white with frost and snow – met me as I turned off the trail around the Dammtjärnen tarn.

I don’t really like trails. For me, it is best to go off the beaten path and discover something new.

The terrain was very hilly with gullies that created paths between small, but steep mounds. And skinning up on my skis proved to be a form of acrobatic parcour as I balanced on the fallen trunks of giant spruces that crossed channels where the first melt waters gushed beneath the snow.

I wobbled up the steep terraces, covered with bottomless snow and broke through wherever the sun had been shining. Once, I sunk in waist deep and wondered how far it was back to the trail.

Higher up, the forest thinned out. Hunched and bent moun-tain birch trees were accompanied by equally windswept pines. Together they formed small islands of trees, which had to be traveled around, in order to reach the tree line.

From the top of Lill-Anjeskutan, I look back and examine my meandering tracks. I had gone through a complex and fascinating environment where I constantly tried to find the best route. And I had not seen a soul. This is definitely a type of wilderness, I think to myself.

In my opinion, this is the best way into the Skäckerfjällen mountains, simply because from the top of Lill-Anjeskutan, (Unna Tjukkele in the Sami language), you get a more sen-sational entrance into the heart of the area. You enter the region by first gaining altitude and then, after the skins are removed from your skis, gliding down to the bottom of the Strydalen Valley.

It occurs to me that I could just as well ski down with my ski-touring gear. Today, I have used Alpine ski-touring boots and wide skis, which gives a bit of a bulldozer-like feeling on the way up. With ski-touring gear, you can be light and free. You can pole, glide and ski, however you like. But today, the summits are calling to me and I choose ski equipment of a heavier caliber. Maybe it was a poor choice. Skins also work well on touring skis for the way up and skiing downhill can also be fun with thinner skis.

I continue upwards and slowly, but surely, the slope angle decreases. The wind from the dramatic interior of the Skäckerfjällen Mountains greets me as a caress at first, but as I look down over the ridge toward the north, it grips me brusquely and the shell jacket goes on.

Under me, the Strydalen valley stretches down mightily to the northwest. Beyond, the valley rises toward the mountains of Akkantjakke, and the slightly rounder Makkentjakke and Sockertoppen. Further away I can see Sandfjället, Steuker, as well as Skeuretjakke.

The skins come off. The telescopic poles are shortened. The backpack straps are tightened. Ski goggles are adjusted. The shell jacket is pulled up around the neck. And off I go.

The sun hasn’t reached the north side of Lill-Anjeskutan yet, so the snow is still cold and soft. After three or four turns I find my pace and the soft snow washes up over my thighs like a whirling wave. The slope continues steepening and I confront it with large turns where I lay in sideways and press both skis down the valley like a surfer. It feels as if my blood has suddenly filled with carbon dioxide that tingles and fizzes its way into my soul and I let out a howl of exhilaration. The run finishes at the foot of Mount Makkentjakkes. I look up to the summit. Then back at my tracks. Magic.

Then the skins go back on the skis and up I go again.Three summits later, the sun falls in the sky and I head

for my car. While I stumble across the frozen marshes in the shimmering pink twilight, I think to myself: Should I really tell anyone else about this place?

travelFly to the Åre – Östersund Airport, or to the Værnes Airport, in Trondheim, Norway. Then travel by car to Anjan. By train, travel to Järpen. From there, rent a car or take a local bus.

Season: December through early May.

Best time of year: Normally March and April. The days are long and the weather is often more stable.

Winter Activities: Ski touring and Alpine ski touring. Equipment: Equipment for harsh winter travel is recom-mended. Visit the Lundhags concept store in Järpen, only 90 km from Skäckerfjällen. The Lundhags headquarters has been located here for 30 years. Lundhags shoe factory is also located on the premises.

Anjan’s heyday occurred during the late 1930s until the 1980s. Thanks to a vacation reform in the 1930s, it became financially possible for more people to take longer vacations, which created a boom in winter tourism in the mountains. Up to the 1970s, Anjan and Skäckerfjällen was a mountain area on the verge of being as popular as more familiar areas in Sweden, such as Mount Kebnekaise, and Sylarna. During the early spring, many tourists travelled to the mountains, often led by local guides who worked for the Anjan mountain lodge or the hotel in Kolåsen.

Today, the number of tourists has slowly diminished. The large Alpine ski resorts in Åre and Sälen attract most winter sport enthusiasts these days. However, a growing number of alpine ski tourers are now discovering Skäckerfjällen’s fine qualities. Perhaps one day, the area will boom again.

Winter tourism in Anjan started in 1937, when the dynamic forest expert, adventurer and cartographer Eyvind Frölich built a picturesque mountain lodge in Anjan after his years as a trapper in Canada and Alaska. Earlier, he had carefully examined maps for the entire Swedish mountain region and found a solitary wilderness of the highest caliber in Anjan. The mountain station is well preserved and is a good reason to visit the area in itself. The Skäckerfjällen mountain area is composed of steep peaks up to 1 200 meters above sea level and stands in stark contrast to the surrounding, flat landscape. The valleys are narrow. Mountain plateaus are few. So, it is either up or down. This means that the area is very suitable for alpine ski touring.

20 | mid layers

mID LAyerS The primary use of mid layers is to provide warmth to the body. Often, mid layers are made of a thin or medium thickness fleece material, but can also be a soft lambs wool sweater or knitted jacket. The layering principle, consisting of a base layer, mid layer and shell garment, creates air pockets that insulate, as well as transport moisture away from the body. If you become too warm, simply put one of these garments into your backpack to stay flexible and comfortable.

One winter trail passes through the area. It starts in Kolåsen and via the protection of Sockertoppen, travels further down into Strydalen and down toward Lake Baksjön and the Anjan Mountain Station. Taking this route allows you to experience virtually the entire Skäckerfjällen area. And if weather permits, you can make detours from the trail up to the summits of Opmotstjakke, Sockertoppen, Makkentjakke and Lill-Anjeskutan.

BASe LAyerSFor our base layers, we have chosen to use the finest Merino wool *. Wool and Merino wool in particular, has a superior ability to keep you warm, and also removes moisture – a base layer’s most important characteristic. Moreover, wool is naturally antibacterial and virtually odorless. A tip! Get a thicker base layer for those really cold days and switch to a thinner one when the temperature creeps up again. You can also try using a thinner long sleeved base layer with a thin short-sleeved Merino Light T-shirt.* Our Merino wool comes only from South American sheep and is guaranteed mulesing-free.

extra-thin fibersA fiber’s thickness is usually measured in ”microns”, i.e. one thousandth of a millimeter. The comfort zone for tight, close fitting garments is 28 microns. Finer fibers provide more comfort and therefore have a lower micron count.Merino wool has a fiber thickness of between 15 to 25 microns, as well as regular and smooth fibers that give it superior softness and comfort. The Merino wool we use in our underwear has a micron count ranging from 18.5 to 20.

wash gentlyMachine wash base layers at a maximum of 40°c. Use a wool detergent, such as Nikwax or Wool Wash, and stretch the garments after washing, so they retain their original shape.

For many, the name Lundhags is synonymous with the best boots in the world. This is partly due to their superior durabi-lity and partly due to the shell principle, which allows them to adapt to any given situation and activity.

the shell principle. as simple as it is ingenious. Our boots are built according to the shell principle. Instead of just combining several layers into one, we do what active outdoor people have always done when dressing – we keep layers separate. Instead of trapping moisture inside the boot, we make sure it gets out.

Being able to put on and take off different layers provides superior flexibility in regulating body temperature. And it helps transport moisture away from the skin. This is exactly the same principle that we follow with our boots, which we see as outer garments for the feet.

The outer layer is designed to serve as durable protection against the elements, while keeping the foot in place and pro viding an excellent grip on the heel. From the outer sole and the boot’s

cellular rubber base, to the full grain nubuck leather shaft, there is not one compromise. You fill the inside of the boot with an insole and two pairs of socks. The idea is simple, yet ingenious. With the shell principle, you can adjust the ”liner” thickness for the activity or temperature. No one goes hiking wearing only a thin shirt or only a thick insulated jacket – so why go outside in boots that cannot be adjusted to the weather? When the insole or sock becomes moist, they can be replaced with a dry change. The boot will also dry much faster, as there is no permanent lining. To begin a day of hiking with a boot that has yesterday’s moisture and dampness is not really a good start to the day. And furthermore, wearing two pairs of socks reduces the risk of getting blisters.

The shell principle also means that our boots work equally well throughout the entire year, as you decide the temperature for your feet based on your choice of socks and insoles. Our more pronounced winter boots are built entirely from the same principle (see image on page 35), but come with removable felt inner boots made from wool to keep out the cold.

” No one goes hiking wearing only a thin sweater or only a thick insulated jacket – so why go outside in boots that cannot be adjusted to the weather? ”

” They should be functional, which means that unnecessary features have been removed. ”

do you prefer turquoise boots? or do you have ”duck feet”? Since we manufacture boots ourselves, we can quickly make repairs for an affordable fixed price.

Having our own production facility also means that we can make custom boots. For example, we make custom boots with extremely high arches, extra wide or narrow lasts, or with different sized soles for different leg lengths. And maybe you have a special color or design in mind? Your specific requests are always welcomed.

some have shoemaking machines. we have a shoemaker. In 1932, Jonas Lundhag started manufacturing shoes and boots in a small factory outside the town of Östersund, Sweden. After 41 years, the factory was moved to Järpen outside the village of Åre, the gateway to the West Jämtland mountains. Today, the factory remains along with the same craftsmanship and pride. And so does the ambition to make boots that last for an entire lifetime in the forests, mountains and fields.

The fact that we stay with the shell principle might be perceived as a bit headstrong. But that is what we are. Partly because we know that boots work best this way, and partly because we are very picky and pay extreme attention to detail. We never just follow a trend. They should be functional, which means that unnecessary features have been removed. It also me-ans that our boots have become much lighter, that the features remaining actually work and that we minimize material usage, which is good for the environment. In our shoe factory, there is a team of shoemakers who know everything about column liners, lasts and full grain nubuck leather. However, they are not only good at building boots. Nature is just around the corner, and being so close gives them a unique opportunity to test the boots for real. They can try out a newly developed or updated pair of boots during lunch and then make changes to the construction in the afternoon – if it is needed.

a lundhags boot lasts. year in and year out. It is important that a boot is comfortable from the start, but our main task is to build a boot that is comfortable after many years of use. Therefore, it is not surprising that a really good boot should consist of so many parts. Our most advanced boot - Syncro - for example, consists of an entire 68 unique parts, each with its own special function. The many parts can provide a major challenge for the shoemaker construc-ting the boot, but it means even more advantages for those who use it.

If any part becomes worn or damaged, our shoemakers in Järpen will replace it. Even after 20 years of hard use, Lundhags customers can still get the soles and shafts replaced and re-paired. This is one of the reasons that the outsoles and bases are not cast in one piece.

A Lundhags shell boot can never be cheap to manufac-ture, but in terms of how many years and steps they will last, our boots are an extremely affordable investment.

One of skiing history’s most spectacular downhill ski events was held for the first time on Lill-Anjeskutan in 1947. The start of the Anjeloppet race was on the summit, which lies 1 154 meters above sea level. The vertical drop was 750 meters to the ice of Lake Baksjön. The course’s length was 4.5 km. On the steep slopes above tree line there were high speeds, but further down, flat marshes awaited and the downhill feeling turned into more of a cross-country skiing event. The last race was held in 1951. The best complete course time was set by ski legend Hans Hansson from the nearby village of Åre. He skied down in the unprecedented time of six minutes and thirty seconds on February 13th, 1949.

Our boots are built according to the shell principle, which means they are like an outer garment for the foot. It’s because of this that two pairs of socks, as well as an insole should complement them. Of course, for the best comfort and function, everything should contain a high percentage of wool.

Our socks are not only a complement to our boots. Each has been developed and designed with the same insight and objectives as everything else in our catalogue. Some are fully lined with terry cloth, others have thin upper shafts with air vents for maximum breathability. No matter what, each sock has unique characteristics according to when, where and how they will be used. Therefore, you should try out your boots with the right socks and insoles, as they are a very important part of forming a complete boot-system.

The fact that our socks contain wool has a simple, yet natural explanation. Wool can absorb up to a third of its weight in moisture without losing its ability to keep you warm. Absorbing so much moisture also means better wicking and

breathability. The more moisture that is transported away from your skin, the drier and more comfortable your feet will be.

choose socks just like you choose other shell garmentsWe recommend that you always use two pairs of socks in our boots. During the summer, use two slightly thinner pairs, and in the winter, use one thin pair and one thicker pair. Wearing two pairs of socks does not only effectively trans-port moisture, but also reduces the friction between the sock and skin. It’s a good way of reducing the risk of getting blisters! Even natural Merino wool helps keep the blisters away. The thinner sock nearest the foot is called the liner and has the same function as a base layer. It is made of soft and smooth Merino wool, which means that it wicks moisture away from the foot and stays warm even if it becomes damp.

The outer sock can be a thicker, insulating sock and is often made with felt, or terry cloth reinforcements on the base for maximum durability and to provide additional cushioning.

Example: If you plan to walk on mostly soft surfaces

when it is warm outside, begin with a liner (layer 1) and

then an Outdoor Sock (layer 2) as shown.

1. sock layer 1 Start with a liner. It should be thin, smooth, tight and made of Merino wool.

2. sock layer 2Padding – for comfort, greater durability and insulation.

They should be thick enough, have reinforcements in exposed areas, and be a bit thinner above the ankle for comfort. And of course, they should keep the foot warm and definitely not cause abrasions at the seams. We have socks for all types of activities. From hiking to ski touring.

Sometimes, you can feel that the development of a certain product category has reached the end of its road – especially those that have been around for a while. The product might work well, but the only thing that changes from year to year is a small adjust-ment to the design, or a little detail that is added or taken away. In general, everything stays the same. But then suddenly, a new product emerges that makes everything else feel…. old. For ex-ample, the EXA from Lundhags.

The exa is nothing short of a revolution within Nordic skating. The skate provides more power to every stride. It has a slightly softer, more muted sound thanks to improved damp ening. It is more sustainable and it provides closer contact with the ice. In short, it is better than other Nordic skates.

the s-profile. the big difference. The simplest ideas are often the most ingenious. Those who hold an exa-skate for the first time always think the same thing – why hasn’t anyone thought of this before? To make a skate from a single piece of steel? All other Nordic skates are made of at least two separate parts that must be combined – a strip of steel and a foot bed.

One advantage with the exa is the fact that nothing on the actual skate can be broken. Even if you happen to deform the blade while skating, you are much more likely to get back home skating. And this is exactly one of the problems that the exa was designed to solve – to make a Nordic skate where the risk of a breakdown is minimized.

a nicer stride with more powerThe exa-skate’s unique profile contributes not only to a skate that you can trust. The open profile also provides a more comfortable stride. Our tests show that the vibrations arising from the blade’s contact with the ice are distributed horizontally instead of straight up into the legs of the skater.

The s-profile also means that each stride requires less force. The reason is when you begin a stride and put down-ward force on the blade, some of the energy is stored in the s-profile and released when you finish the stride. It can be compared to the way a slingshot or bow and arrow works. The s-profile also flexes ever so slightly during the stride, which helps to give it the positive and unique skating characteristics.

the brains behind the exaThe development of the exa reflects how we always work with product development at Lundhags. We challenge the traditional, to improve or create entirely new in-novations. Our unique shell boots were an early example of this, and the exa is our latest.

As with any brilliant idea, there is a curi-ous mind behind it. In the case of the exa, it is Stephen Copp, a Product Developer at Lundhags, who has been leading the development. The exa project took form due to Stephen and his reflections on the dependabi-lity of skates on ice.

” The s-profile also means that each stride requires less force. ”

Page 25: Anjan Winter 2010

48 | lundhags.se lundhags.se | 49

– I asked myself the question why skates are always designed and built in several parts, says Stephen. Perhaps mostly to challenge the traditional, but also because I know that the more parts a product is manufactured from, the more pro-blems there are likely to be.

The exa-skate, with its s-shape, looks ingeniously simple, but the road to the finished design, was anything but that.

– From the time I decided to make a skate from a single piece of steel until we had a prototype that we could skate on, took almost one and a half years. The greatest challenge was finding a steel material that had the hardness a skate requires and that could also be bent in the extreme radius needed to make the exa-skate. But as usual, you should look in your own backyard. We found a stainless steel material that met all of our very tough criteria right here in Sweden.

Since exa is made from a single piece of steel, the risk for errors during production declined dramatically. The number of processes in production has gone from nine to three, with two being completely automated. In addition, no glue is used, which is obviously better for the environment, as well as for those who work with the product in particular.

nordic skating is growing, thanks to the exa.The exa Nordic skate is a good example of Lundhags’ capa-city for innovation, but also for how we start from the user’s needs and are solution oriented. When we develop a new product, we always start with a proper problem formulation, so the chances are better that we come up with something unique, such as the exa.

The attention surrounding exa has helped increase the interest in Nordic skating far down into Central Europe. And given that in North America, there are an incredible number of people skating on natural ice with hockey skates, many more will soon discover the pleasure of ice-skating for long-distances using real skates.

This shows how a completely new, seemingly simple innovation can create a completely new dimension. In this case, exa has helped make Nordic skating grow.

It probably requires a life a bit off the beaten path to be able to really think outside the box. Born in Skellefteå, but raised for his first 10 years at a mountain station in northern India, Stephen Copp met the true Swedish wilderness for the first time when the family moved back to a village only a few kilometers outside of Järpen, Sweden. When the snow and ice came, it was love at first sight. In fact, his passion for snow was so strong that he later became one of the best snowboarders in the world. Between 1999 and 2002, Stephen was never lower than 10th place in the world rankings. During the Olympics in Nagano and Salt Lake City he did not quite make it, but for the 1999 World Cup he received fifth place. A competitive instinct to always keep improving remains in his daily life as a product developer at Lundhags. The development of the EXA Nordic skate is a perfect example of this.

” Lundhags’ exa Nordic skate is a revolutionary product for a large audience. The simple concept impresses with its high degree of functionality, perfect finish and clean design, and will surely create a new standard for the entire sport of Nordic Skating. ”

» A revolution in Nordic skating. Lundhags EXA is manufactured from a single piece of stainless steel that has been folded into an open s-profile. Compared to traditional skates, it increases performance significantly: EXA is lighter and quieter, provides better shock absorption properties and skates closer to the ice. Thanks to the simple design it is also more sustainable. And another advantage: almost any binding can be mounted on them. «

Sk AteSAt Lundhags, we are at least as passionate about Nordic skating as we are about hiking. Admittedly, there is something special about gliding over an endless sheet of mirror-like ice. The speed. The freedom. And the silence, which is only broken by the singing sound of the skates on the ice (and perhaps a jacket flapping in the wind). When you select a skate from Lundhags, you will get high-quality, Swedish stainless steel. And if you choose the new, totally revolutionary exa, you will get a skate that absorbs vibrations better, and is quieter than traditional skates.

Cellular Rubber Technology and the manufacturing technology behind Lundhags’ cellular rubber bottoms. Cellular rubber is a yeast rubber with many micro air bubbles that produces a light and flexible material, which is also waterproof. Different version numbers, from 2.0 – 5.0, were produced to describe the differences, where a higher number has a more stable or warmer construction. The same construction is available in both Normal and Opti fitting.

nOrmAL F It tIngWide ground plate and high instep. Allows space for extra socks.

Op tI F It tIng4 mm wider and 6 mm longer for broader feet. The instep is somewhat lower to prevent the foot from sliding, but the width is larger than the normal fitting.

Op tI WS L A S tThe new Opti Ws last is 3 mm narrower and 3 mm higher than the Optilast, has the same circumference and is better suited for those with narrower and higher feet.

The Skäckerfjällen area is a reindeer herding ground for Kall, a native Sami village, and one of Sweden’s 51 Sami villages. A particularly important area for reindeer herding is the area south of Burvattnet in the northern Skäckerfjällen, as well as the area around Ottsjöarna in the western parts. As a skier, you should respect any restrictions, as a sensitive calving period occurs in late winter. Never ski toward the reindeer, rather look for ways around, so you disrupt them as little as possible.

lundhags has been appointed a norr green partnerLundhags is proud to have been appointed a norr Green Partner. norr Magazin is a German specialty magazine that writes exclusively about the Scandinavian countries with great knowledge and a lot of passion. The magazine has a clear environmental profile and has selected the outdoor companies that are leaders within environmental issues.

This season, we switched to fsc-certified paper and an fsc-certified paper print house. fsc stands for the Forest Stewardship Council, which is an in-ternational, independent organization that works for environ-mentally sound forest management worldwide. Learn more at www.fsc.org. It gives you proof that our catalogue is made of paper from forests that have been farmed with environ mentally responsible methods.

” We look for companies working systematically with various environmental issues. Companies that don’t just look at the material choices, but also work with the impact of the entire organization. ”
