• The word “Animation” is a form of “animate”, which means an image is brought to life also defined as a handmade motion picture.

• An Animation is a continuous, time-varying image.

What is Animation?

Egyptian burial chamber mural.

Early approaches to motion in art:

In this image the legs position of the animal is changed indicating a motion

Five images sequence from a vase. This shows scenes of young

soldiers being trained in wrestling and combat. Different

motions of soldiers is depicted

These paintings are 4000 years old

Historical Review of Animation

A Thaumatrope is a circular disk or card with two different pictures on each side along with threads when rotated the pictures combine .

A Zeotrope was a cylindrical spinning devices with several frames of animation along the circumference. Vertical slits of cylinder are for

viewing the motion of image.

A Flip book contains images

Depicting a motion and are drawn on the edges

when the pages are turned we can see a

action in the images.

ANIMATION TECHNIQUES• Stop Motion Technique(1908):It is a

video technique in which real objects are moved time to time and each step is recorded so that when the images are viewed as a video, they appear to be moving by some invisible force.

Clay animation comes under this. It is used at present also.

The first hand drawn stop motion animation is “The dinosaur”

• Disney’s first project with this technique is

“Alice Comedies” • Disney attained first break

through with “steam willie boat”

which has fully post

produced sound.• During this breakthrough

the age is defined as

“Golden age of animation”

• Celluloid Animation:The process of first drawing each frame

of animation onto paper, then transferring these to transparent acetate

sheets (cels, short for celluloid). Colour is then added on the reverse of the cel. Layers are built up to create dimension.

The cels are individually photographed onto film by a rostrum camera.

After photography the film is synced with the sound and the video is played

PHOTGRAPHY

The first outbreak through by this technique was With

snow white and the seven dwarfs

Cartoon showsCartoon movies

Loony tunes

• it includes 2D,3D,LIVE 3D technology using computer softwares .• 2D Animation: Created using bitmap or

vector graphics Softwares.• Used for flash animation and PowerPoint

animation as well as some 2D cartoons• Some cartoons by this are:

Computer Generated Animation:

COMPUTER GRAPHIC IMAGERY:

3D ANIMATION:• Objects are made by first creating a “rigging mesh” .As well as in this the

animator uses gravity, particle and texture simulations to create realistic animations

• Actors can also wear suits with sensors ,which copies their movements to computer

• Notable examples of computer animation include:

Bal Ganesh , The Polar Express ,avatar and of course, any film by Pixar...
